COACHES 18 Oklahoma (26-10) SOONERS MIDWEEK PREVIEW The No. 18 Sooners (26-10) host No. 11 TCU (27-7) on Tuesday, April 20 at 7 p.m. at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The game is the second and final meeting of 2010 between OU and the Horned Frogs. The Sooners won game one, 4-2, on April 6 in Fort Worth. OU is 4-6 in the last 10 games and is ranked as high as No. 18 this week by USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll (No. 20-Collegiate Baseball and No. 24-Baseball America). TCU returns 18 letterwinners from the 2009 team that was overall and won the Mountain West Conference and hosted a NCAA Regional before advancing to the next round at Texas. The Horned Frogs have won seven straight games since falling to the Sooners on April 6, including a three-game sweep at BYU over the weekend. TCU is 6-1 so far in their 10-game Big 12 schedule. Starting Pitcher - RHP Paul Gerrish (1-2, 3.00 ERA)... Gerrish is 0-3 against OU after suffering losses earlier this year and in 2008 and BROADCAST INFORMATION The OU broadcast with Chuck Kelly calling the play-by-play and Damon Minor on color analysis can be heard Tuesday on the Sooners Sports Network (KREF 1400 AM) in Oklahoma City and Norman and free online at SoonerSports.com. The career-high nine-game hitting streak is the third longest by a Sooner this season. The San Antonio, Texas native is hitting.313 in that span (10-for-32) with a homer, two doubles, seven runs scored and four RBIs. 2 Week 10 - April 19 Oklahoma vs. TCU 2 HEAD COACH SUNNY GOLLOWAY Sunny Golloway has led the Sooners to four NCAA Regional Finals, 170 victories and a top 25 ranking in each of his five years at the helm of the OU program. In 2009, the Sooners were awared the program s first national seed (No. 7) in the NCAA Tournament. The 2009 season was highlighted by Oklahoma hosting another NCAA Regional and making its 32nd appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Sooners were overall and in Big 12 play. OU finished half of a game out of first place in the conference standings in 2009 and also dominated the award circuit with seven All-Big 12 honorees, including the Big 12 Player of the Year in J.T. Wise and the Big 12 Freshman of the Year in Garrett Buechele. The league honors were program firsts since the Big 12 s inception in 1997 and were followed up by Wise being named a consensus All-American and the first Sooner to be given the Johnny Bench Award (top catcher). Wise was one of four Sooners awarded All-America status in 2009 and joined a group of nine Sooners to be selected in the 2009 MLB Draft, a Big 12 high last season. The nine selections tied the nine selected under Golloway in 2006, the third most in program history. Since 2005, 29 Sooners have been drafted under Golloway at the helm. The 2009 season was the second time the Sooners hosted a NCAA Regional in four years. In 2006, Golloway led OU to the NCAA Norman Regional title and became the second coach in NCAA Division I history to guide his club to a Super Regional Appearance in his first year at the helm. The NCAA regional title was a program first since Including eight seasons ( ) as the head coach at Oral Roberts and his record at OU s helm, Golloway is (.665). The winning percentage ranks in the top 15 nationally among active head coaches (minimum five years). The last Sooner to throw a complete game was Garrett Richards in the 2009 NCAA Norman Regional on May 29 vs. Washington State. - Neal has 26 strikeouts and five walks in his last four starts which lasted a combined 29 2/3. - Caleb Bushyhead (SS) is the only Sooner to play in all 36 games and he leads the team with 35 starts. - Bushyhead registered one hit in 22 games last season and already has 42 hits. He is second on OU with 12 multi-hit games. - Casey Johnson s 13-game hitting streak ended on April 1. It is was a career best and the longest by a Sooner in Oklahoma has started 19 different players in the lineup after Cale Ellis made his first start vs. Texas on April 2. OU-TCU SERIES The teams have met each of the last 20 seasons dating back to OU leads the all-time series with TCU, 50-21, after winning the last five games, including a 4-2 win at TCU on April 6, The Sooners won the first game in 2009 over then-no. 14 TCU on March 17, 8-7, in Fort Worth. OU was ranked No. 13 at the time and was No. 9 when it completed the sweep on April 14, 7-5, at home over No. 16 TCU. Seventeen of the games have been decided by one run (OU, 13-4), including seven of the last 16 (OU, 4-3). OU is 8-2 against TCU under Sunny Golloway. UP NEXT Oklahoma returns to the road for a three-game conference series at Texas A&M. The series gets started on Friday, April 23 at 6:30 p.m. and the game will be televised live on Cox Ch. 3 in Oklahoma City and Tulsa. Game two is slated for 2 p.m. on Saturday and the finale will also be televised on Fox College Sports on Sunday at 1 p.m. LAST TIME OUT The Sooners finished last week with a 1-3 record and suffered just their second series defeat in Big 12 play in 2010 at Texas Tech. OU began the week with a 7-6 loss a non-conference game at Oklahoma State in 10 innings, the first Bedlam meeting on campus since The weekend began on Saturday after rain postponed Friday s action and OU won the opener, 12-1, over Texas Tech. However, despite dropping its eighth straight series opener to OU, Texas Tech rallied in games two and three with scores of 7-3 and 8-3, respectively. STREAKING Chris Ellison (seven games) was one of four Sooners to extend their hitting streaks on April 18. Garrett Buechele and Caleb Bushyhead have hit safely in the last eight games and Tyler Ogle upped his streak to nine games. Complete list on page 20. TWO HOME GAMES ADDED TO SCHEDULE OU added two games to the regular season schedule in order to make up for games lost in March against Baylor due to inclement weather. The two non-conference home games include Arkansas Little Rock on May 4 and Texas Southern on May 19. Both games will get underway at 7 p.m. at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The OU Athletics Department will celebrate Fan Appreciation Day at both games with free admission into the park. LATE-INNING PRODUCTION OU has scored 119 of its 273 runs, or 44 percent, in the sixth inning and later. In addition, the Sooners have outscored the opposition, 53-16, in the eighth and ninth innings combined, which includes eight home runs. SCORING FIRST OU has scored first in 11 of the last 28 games and in 15 overall. OU has a 13-2 record in those contests. The opposition has tallied the game s first run in 21 games and OU is In Big 12 play, OU has scored first in just two games (GM2 at Nebraska and GM1 vs. Texas Tech). ONE-RUN GAMES The Sooners have recorded one-run victories in five games this year. OU is 5-3 in those situations in 2010 and the Sooners are (.712) under head coach Sunny Golloway. AWAY The Sooners have recorded 13 of their 26 wins in the friendly confines of L. Dale Mitchell Park. OU is averaging 10.5 hits per game despite losing five regular starters from last season s club. The Sooners are also averaging 7.58 runs per game with 12 games with 10 or more scores, including the 26 posted in game one of the UAPB series, the most since exploding for 29 runs on March 22, 2009 at Kansas State. EXTRA INNINGS UNDER GOLLOWAY OU is 0-1 in extra-inning games this season but overall since Sunny Golloway took over the helm of the Sooner program at the end of the 2005 season. DUKE MOVING UP SAVES LIST Ryan Duke recorded two saves on the opening weekend to move into sole possession of second place on OU s all-time saves list (below). Duke led the Big 12 in saves with 16 last year (ranked sixth in the nation), the second most in a single season by a Sooner (Jeff Bajenaru - 20, 2000). He currently leads the Big 12 with 10 saves and is the first Sooner in school history to have 10 or more in two seasons. He ranks second in the nation as of April 12 with 10 saves. Duke was named a third team All-American in 2009 and is the first Sooner since David Purcey in 2003, now with the Toronto Blue Jays, to appear on a preseason AA list. ERBEN ON PITCHER WATCH LIST Jeremy Erben is one of seven hurlers from the Big 12 named to the Pitcher of the Year watch list on March 23 as presented by the College Baseball Foundation. This is the second year for the award and it will be presented in Lubbock, Texas, on July 2 as part of the College Baseball Awards Show. He is second in the Big 12 in wins (5) and ERA (0.61) and was named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week for games played through March 7. OGLE ON JOHNNY BENCH WATCH LIST Sophomore catcher/dh Tyler Ogle was named to the Johnny Bench watch list for 2010 on March 2. Ogle caught in 10 games last year, including eight starts behind J.T. Wise (2009 winner). Wise became the first Sooner to collect the award in program history and just the second in Big 12 history. DRAFTED SOONERS Nine current Sooners have been drafted in their careers (third most in Big 12 this season), including four newcomers on the 2010 squad that were selected in 2009 (Danny Black, Ryan Gibson, Chad Kettler and Bobby Shore). Additionally, 22 of the Big 12 games are set to be carried on the Sooners Sports Network starting April 1. enabling fans to listen to OU baseball on various stations across the state starting on April 1, nearly double the amount from previous seasons.
