Starter Jusn Verlander picked up his fourth win of the season. He threw 7.0 innings and allowed three earned runs on four hits with one walk and five strikeouts. The Tigers came out swinging in the bo om of the 1st inning, launching back-to-backto-back home runs (Avila, Cabrera, J.D. Marnez). Nomar Mazara ripped a two-run double off Verlander in the 4th inning to cut the lead to 7-2, but Alex Avila answered right back in the bo om half of the frame with his own two-run double. The Tigers win snapped the Rangers 10-game winning streak, as well as their seven-game win streak at Comerica Park. THREE S COMPANY: Last night, Alex Avila, Miguel Cabrera and J.D. Marnez hit consecuve home runs off A.J. Griffin in the 1st inning of the Tigers 9-3 home win over the Rangers. It marked the first me that Detroit had recorded three straight home runs in the 1st inning since July 29, 1974, when Al Kaline, Bill Freehan, and Mickey Stanley went back-to-backto-back against Cleveland s Fritz Peterson. Entering Saturday, Griffin had been one of only three Major League pitchers who had made at least five starts this year without surrendering the game s first run in any of them (others: TB s Chris Archer & SEA s James Paxton). I LL TAKE SCORCHING HOT FOR.400, ALEX: Tigers C/1B Alex Avila connued his torrid pace to start the year on Saturday night, missing the cycle by a triple (3x3, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, 2 R, BB). His perfect night at the plate brought his average up to.382 (26x68), which is the highest among all Major League hi ers with at least 50 at-bats this season (2nd: LAD s Jusn Turner,.379). He also has the highest OBP (.488), second-best OPS (1.194) and fi!h-best SLG % (.706) in MLB this season. HIGHEST OPS, MLB, 2017 (min. 50 AB) 1. Freddie Freeman, ATL ALEX AVILA, DET Mike Trout, LAA Aaron Judge, NYY Bryce Harper, WSH GUESS WHO S BACK, BACK AGAIN?: Since returning from the DL a!er missing the first 33 games of the season with a right midfoot sprain, Tigers ou#ielder J.D. Marnez has slugged six home runs in his first eight games with an absurd OPS. He is the first Tiger to hit six HR s in his first eight games of a season since Chris Shelton in 2006, and the first American League player to do so since TEX s Nelson Cruz in Addionally, Marnez is sporng a lo!y.647 OBP over his first 34 plate appearances (11 H, 11 BB). TEXAS TOAST: A!er snapping Texas 10-game winning streak and club-best seven-game win streak in the city of Detroit yesterday (previous: 6 straight, May 9-August 13, 1975), the Tigers are looking to complete their first series win over the Rangers at Comerica Park since July 12-14, 2013 (0-3 in last 3 series here). EYES OF THE NATION: The Tigers and Rangers will do ba le tonight on ESPN s Sunday Night Baseball, beginning at 8:05 p.m. ET with Dan Shulman, Aaron Boone, Jessica Mendoza and Buster Olney calling the shots. It marks the first SNB appearance of the season for Detroit, with their next scheduled for June 11th against the Red Sox at Fenway Park (also 8:05 p.m. ET).
