Starter Mahew Boyd (L, 2-3) threw 6.0 innings, allowing four runs (3 ER) on eight hits with three walks and six strikeouts. James McCann broke a scoreless e with an RBI single in the 2nd inning. Arizona plated two runs in the 3rd inning on a solo home run by Nick Ahmed and a passed ball. A er walking the pitcher with two outs, Boyd allowed a two-run single to A.J. Pollock in the boom of the 6th inning to make it 4-1. Anibal Sanchez surrendered three runs on back-to-back homers in the 7th inning. Chad Bell made his Major League debut in the 8th and tossed a scoreless frame. SEND ME AN ANGEL: All- me, the Tigers hold a 10- game advantage over the Angels, The last five years, however, haven t been so kind. Since September 2012, Detroit has a 6-23 (.207) record against the Angels, by far their worst winning percentage vs. any team in that me frame. The Tigers are 1-8 in nine series vs. LAA over that stretch, which included a 10- game losing streak to the Angels (9/7/12-4/18/14) and an eight-game losing streak (7/25/14-8/25/15). Detroit has not won a series in Anaheim since August 24-26, 2009 (2-1). They are 0-7 in their last seven series here with a 5-19 (.208) record at Angel Stadium during that period. MASH UNIT: The Tigers star ng lineup has been bien by the injury bug early this season. Righ"ielder J.D. Mar!nez has yet to appear in a game a er suffering a right midfoot sprain in spring training. First baseman Miguel Cabrera missed 10 games with a groin strain. Shortstop José Iglesias was out for seven days a er suffering a concussion in an on-field collision. Centerfielder JaCoby Jones was hit in the face by a pitch and was on the 10-day DL with a facial lacera on. And now, Tigers second baseman Ian Kinsler has missed the last five games with le hamstring ghtness. GOT IT IN THE BAG: A er si$ng out of the star ng lineup for the last two days in a Na onal League park (ARI), Tigers DH Victor Mar nez will get a chance to con nue his clutch performances tonight in Anaheim. So far this season, Mar nez has posted the ninth highest ba$ng average with runners in scoring posi on (.389, 14x36) among all American League players (see chart below). Mar nez, who is currently on the 10-day DL with a right midfoot sprain, went 1-for-4 with a solo home run for triple-a Toledo as part of a rehab assignment. He has appeared in five total rehab games so far, going 4x19 (.211), 2 HR, 4 RBI, 3 R. Since signing with Detroit prior to the 2014 season, Mar nez has baed.299 with 98 doubles, seven triples, 83 home runs, 246 RBI and 219 runs scored in 401 games. ABOUT MICHAEL: In his second major league season, Fulmer will make his seventh start of the season tonight at Los Angeles (AL). LAST TIME OUT: Fulmer earned his third win of the season on Friday at Oakland, throwing a season-long 8.0 innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits with two walks and a season-high nine strikeouts. Fulmer also posted 132 strikeouts, which were the second most by a rookie pitcher in Tigers history, trailing only Les Cain, who struck out 156 ba"ers as a rookie in Along with being named AL Rookie of the Year by the BBWAA, Fulmer was named the American League Rookie of the Year by The Sporng News and the American League Outstanding Rookie in the Players Choice Award ballo$ng. SCORELESS STREAK ENDS AT 33.1 INNINGS: Fulmer posted an impressive scoreless innings streak of 33.1 innings during his rookie season. The streak, which was the longest by a Tigers pitcher since at least 1913, was snapped on June 17 at Kansas City when Salvador Perez hit a two-out solo home run in the sixth inning. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the streak was the second longest by a rookie star$ng pitcher since 1971, trailing only a streak of 35.0 scoreless innings by Fernando Valenzuela during the 1981 season. GOING THE DISTANCE: Fulmer threw the first complete game and shutout of his career on August 14, 2016 at Texas, sca"ering four hits and striking out nine. Fulmer became the first Tigers rookie pitcher to throw a shutout since Jus$n Verlander on May 22, 2006 at Kansas City and he joined Philadelphia's Zach Eflin and Colorado's Jon Gray as the only major league rookies to throw a shutout last season. IMPRESSIVE STRETCH: Fulmer posted an impressive 10-start stretch from May 21-July 17, 2016, compiling a 7-1 record with a 0.83 ERA (65.1IP/6ER) and 55 strikeouts. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, since the major leagues began keeping track of earned runs just over 100 years ago, no other pitcher has compiled an ERA that low over a span of 10 successive starts in the season of his major league debut. Over the last 50 seasons, the only other rookie to produce an ERA below 1.00 over a span of 10 consecu$ve starts was Cal Eldred, who had an ERA of 0.95 over a 10-start run for the Brewers in August and September, ONE RUN-OR-FEWER IN EIGHT STRAIGHT STARTS: Fulmer allowed one run-or-fewer in eight straight starts from May 21-July 1, 2016, becoming one of only six pitchers since 1913 to have eight straight starts with one-or-fewer runs allowed, joining Bob Gibson (11 straight starts, June 6-July 30, 1968), Josh Johnson (8 straight starts, May 13-June 20, 2010), Derek Lowe (8 straight starts, August 31, 2008-April 10, 2009), Johan Santana (8 straight starts, August 23-September 29, 2004) and J.R. Fulmer threw at least 6.0 shutout innings and allowed three-or-fewer hits in four straight starts from May 27-June 12, According to the Elias Sports Bureau, since 1893, when the mound was moved to 60 feet, 6 inches away from the plate, Fulmer and Jake Arrieta are the only two pitchers to record four consecu$ve starts of 6.0-or-more shutout innings and three-or-fewer hits allowed. Arrieta s streak occurred from September 22, 2015 to April 4, PICKING UP THE WIN IN HIS BIG LEAGUE DEBUT: Fulmer recorded the first win of his major league career on April 29 at Minnesota. Fulmer became the 41st Tigers pitcher since 1913 to earn the win in his major league debut and the first since Kyle Ryan on August 30, 2014 at Chicago (AL). EASTERN LEAGUE PITCHER OF THE YEAR IN 2015: Fulmer was named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Year in 2015 a!er compiling a 10-3 record with a 2.14 ERA (117.2IP/28ER) and 116 strikeouts in 21 starts between Double A Binghamton and Double A Erie. He led the Eastern League with a 2.14 ERA and a.769 winning percentage, while he was fourth with a 1.10 WHIP and a.228 opponents ba#ng average.
