THE CARDINALS The Marlins dropped the season-series opener to the Cardinals last night. Miami was 4-2 vs. the Cardinals last season, 2-1 at Marlins Park, and has won four of its last six against the Redbirds. The Marlins are all-time vs. the Cardinals, at home (5-6 at Marlins Park). LAST NIGHT The Marlins jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings, but the Cardinals scored the next four runs of the game and held on for a 4-3 win. Giancarlo Stanton s 26 th home run of the season (11 th of June) gave the Fish a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Marcell Ozuna led off the second with a double and scored two batters later on a single by Adeiny Hechavarria. St. Louis tied the game off of starter Jose Ureña in the fourth, and pushed the go-ahead run across against Sam Dyson (3-3) in the seventh. NO JUNE SWOON HERE Giancarlo Stanton has 11 home runs this month, a new Club record for June. With six games remaining in the month, Stanton is one homer shy of tying his own Club record for home runs in any month, which is 12 in May of 2012 (Dan Uggla also had 12 in May of 2008). He leads the NL in home runs this month, and is second in the Majors behind Albert Pujols (12). The most home runs hit in a single month this season was 13, by Bryce Harper in May. Stanton has a hit in all 10 home games so far this month (.412/14x34), with six home runs and 15 RBI. SOUTHERN HOS-PAW-TALITY Miami, which faces left-hander Jaime Garcia tonight, leads the National League with a.274 team batting average against southpaws, trailing only Toronto (.310) in the Majors. Six Marlins are currently hitting over.300 against lefties, led by Marcell Ozuna (.396) and Dee Gordon (.373), who ranks second in the Majors among left-handed hitters, behind Anthony Rizzo (.377). Ichiro Suzuki has the third-best career average against lefties among active players, behind David Wright (.341) and Ryan Braun (.333); that is the highest career mark by a left-handed hitter since 1974, ahead of Tony Gwynn (.325) and Rod Carew (.317). WELL AHEAD OF THE PACK Giancarlo Stanton hit his 26 th home run of the season last night in his 71 st game. He is the fastest player in Club history to reach 26 home runs, beating out former leader Mike Lowell (85 in 2003) by 14 games. The fastest player to 27 home runs in Club history was Gary Sheffield, who did it in 87 games in Elias CHANGE OF CIRCUMSTANCE Since snapping a seven-game home losing streak to St. Louis (final three losses at Marlins Park) on June 27, 2012, Miami has gone 5-3 against the Redbirds in South Florida. The Marlins have pounded out 10-or-more hits in six of those contests, averaging 4.8 runs per game with a.287 (75x261) team average. The Fish are slugging.464 in that time, with 18 doubles, two triples and eight home runs, including a long ball in four straight outings. Giancarlo Stanton has played in all eight of those games, posting a.357 (10x28) average, with three doubles, four home runs, nine RBI, and a.893 slugging percentage; Adeiny Hechavarria has a hit in six of the seven games he has appeared in during that span, batting.296 (8x27) with a triple and four RBI. REELING EM IN ON HOME WATERS Miami s pitching staff has posted a 2.01 ERA (112.0 ip/25 er) over its last 12 games at Marlins Park, dating back to May 23, when the Fish snapped a nine-game home losing streak. The Club is 9-3 at home over that span. Marlins hurlers have held opponents under two runs in five of those 12 contests, including four of the last seven, and have registered two 15-strikeout games (May 23 vs. Baltimore & June 13 vs. Colorado), which is a season high. Prior to May 23, Miami had a 3.99 ERA (212/94) in 23 home games (8-15 team record), and had held opponents under two runs just twice. Since May 23, Miami s home ERA ranks third in the Majors, behind Pittsburgh (1.36) and St. Louis (1.75), as does the Club s home winning percentage (.750, tied with Toronto), behind Pittsburgh (.857/12-2) and St. Louis (.846/11-2). CALLED UP AND DIALED IN Since being recalled from Triple-A New Orleans on June 12, Derek Dietrich is batting.296 (8x27) with a.387 on-base percentage (two walks, two hbp), and a.741 slugging percentage (three doubles, three home runs).
