1 Louisiana-Monroe Game 8 Tuesday, February 18 6:30 p.m., Alex Box Stadium Laval welcomes former team: LSU hosts UL-Monroe tonight hoping to put a sweep by Kansas behind them. LSU is on its first three-game losing streak since losing four in a row last March The Tigers have also lost three in a row at home for the first time since last March The Tigers were swept for the first time at home since Houston did so in February of 2000, and it was the first sweep suffered anywhere by LSU since losing three at Arkansas in May of LSU last lost four in a row at home in February of 2000, losing to McNeese St. and being swept by Houston. The Tigers enter tonight s game having won 15 of their last 16 against in-state foes and seven straight mid-week games dating to last year. The Tigers were last 4-3 in 1993, LSU s second national championship season. LSU has not been at or below.500 eight or more games into any season since going 5-5 in Scouting the Indians: UL-Monroe took two of three from UNO over the weekend, but is playing its first road game of The Indians took two from Henderson St. to open the season and defeated Grambling last Tuesday before the UNO series. ULM is in two-plus seasons under coach Brad Holland, who took over for Smoke Laval when Laval was named Skip Bertman s successor at LSU in the summer of ULM s top hitter is senior catcher Joey Wolfe, who enters tonight s game with a.400 batting average. The Indians pitching staff has been stellar so far this year, posting a 1.38 ERA and holding opponents to a.185 batting average. ULM s starting pitcher tonight is junior left-hander Ryan Schwabe, who is 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA in five innings. LSU pitching coach Brady Wiederhold served in the same capacity at ULM under Laval in 2000 and Holland in LSU administrative assistant Ted White was an all-southland Conference player at ULM from 1998 through Both Laval and White are Pittsburgh natives. About the series: LSU has won five straight meetings with UL- Monroe to expand its series lead to The Tigers swept all four meetings with the Indians in 2002, winning 10-3 in Monroe in April after sweeping three in Baton Rouge in March by scores of 4-3, 7-1 and 8-7. Sean Barker was LSU s leading hitter last year vs. UL-Monroe, batting.562 (9-for-16) with 5 RBI. The Tigers posted a.352 batting average vs. ULM in the four games in 2002, scoring 29 runs on 50 hits. The Indians last victory was a 7-6, 11-inning triumph in 2001 in Baton Rouge in Brad Holland s first meeting against LSU. LSU is 3-0 all-time in NCAA regional meetings, defeating ULM 11-4 in 1999 and by scores of 21 0 and 5-3 in LSU coach Smoke Laval was 3-8 vs. the Tigers in his seven-year stint in Monroe from Skip Bertman, was 19-4 against the Indians in his 18-year tenure. LSU swept Northwestern State to open the season at home to run its winning streak over SLC teams to eight in a row. The Tigers only loss under Laval to an SLC team was a 4-3 setback to Southeastern Louisiana last February 12. Laval is 4-0 vs. ULM, 1-1 vs. SLU and 3-0 vs. Northwestern St. at LSU. Tigers look to keep two trends alive vs. La. foes Since a disastrous 7-0 loss to UL-Lafayette last March 19 at Moore Field, the Tigers have been unbeatable in midweek games, posting seven consecutive victories heading into tonight s game with UL-Monroe. Five of those seven mid-week wins have come away from Alex Box Stadium. The Tigers defeated UNO and Southern last year at The Box during the streak, but also won games at SLU, ULM, UNO (at Zephyr Field) and Tulane (in the Superdome). LSU s 15-0 victory over Centenary in Shreveport last Tuesday extended the streak to seven overall and five away from home. From the start of 2002 through the loss in Lafayette, the Tigers were 1-4 in mid-week affairs, dropping two to the Cajuns, home games to Tulane and SLU, with the only win coming at Centenary. The second loss to ULL last year also marked a reversal of fortune against in-state foes. Since that game, LSU is 15-1 against in-state competition, with the only loss being a 5-0 setback to the Cajuns in the second round of last year s Baton Rouge regional. Smoke Laval is 19-5 in his LSU tenure vs. in-state teams. The Tigers have eight games remaining against Louisiana foes after tonight s contest. Meier goes for 2-0 LSU true freshman right-hander Justin Meier can become the first Tiger pitcher to go to 2-0 on the season when he accepts his second starting assignment tonight vs. UL-Monroe. Meier, a Windmere, Fla., native, was impressive in his LSU debut last Tuesday at Centenary, giving up just two hits in five scoreless innings. Meier worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning, then faced the minimum number of batters over the final four innings. Meier is one of only two true freshman to see mound time for the Tigers this year, along with left-hander Greg Smith, who made his debut in Sunday s second game against Kansas. In all, six LSU pitchers have made their debut in 2003: Meier, Smith, sophomore Jordan Faircloth and juniors Billy Sadler, Nate Bumstead and Brandon Nall. Silver Lining? In three of its five national championship seasons, LSU recovered from a three-game sweep and came back to win it all in Omaha. The Tigers were swept in 1991 at Kentucky, in 1996 at Florida and in 2000 at home by Houston. Since 1989, LSU has been swept in a threegame series only five times.

3 Tigers swept by Jayhawks LSU suffered a three-game sweep at the hands of the Kansas Jayhawks this past weekend at Alex Box Stadium, as KU became the first team to sweep LSU since Arkansas took three from the Tigers in 2001 at Fayetteville. Kansas also became the first non-conference team to win a series in Baton Rouge and the first team, SEC or outside the SEC, to sweep a series at The Box since Houston did so in February of Since 1982, LSU has been swept at home three times by Auburn in 1988 and the aforementioned sweeps by Houston and Kansas. Here s a look at three-game sweeps in the regular season suffered by LSU since 1984: Dates Opponent Site Scores 2/14-16/03 Kansas Baton Rouge 6-9, 4-6, 7-9 5/4-6/01 Arkansas Fayetteville 1-8, 4-5, 3-4 2/25-27/00 Houston Baton Rouge 2-10, 7-11, /22-24/96 Florida Gainesville 6-7, 5-9, 1-2 4/20-21/91 Kentucky Lexington 7-17, 7-11, 3-7 5/7-8/88 Auburn Baton Rouge 1-2, 1-8, /29-31/88 Wichita St. Wichita 3-5, 3-5, /20-21/85 Mississippi St. Starkville 1-6, 5-6, 4-7 4/28-29/84 Mississippi St. Starkville 1-5, 6-8, 0-3 3/10-11/84 Alabama Tuscaloosa 1-10, 2-3, 3-11 In the same time span (since 1984), LSU has swept a staggering total of 76 three-game series and gone in three others. LSU has had at least one three-game sweep in every season since Tigers suffer rare doubleheader sweep Kansas got its three-game sweep by taking both ends of a Sunday doubleheader, marking the first time LSU has been swept in a regular season doubleheader since Kentucky took two from the Tigers in 1991 at Lexington. LSU has suffered two losses in one day in the interim, but those have come in the post-season. The Tigers lost twice to South Carolina last May 25 to be eliminated from the SEC Tournament. Tigers can t play the lead LSU had the lead only three times in the Kansas series, and every time, the Jayhawks responded in their next turn at bat to either tie the game or take the lead. On Friday, LSU led 1-0 in the first but fell behind 3-1, and led 6-5 in the sixth only to see the game tied at 6-6. In Sunday s second game, LSU led 1-0 after one before KU tied the game at 1-1. Tigers can t get clutch hits LSU entered the Kansas series hitting.451 (23-for-51) with runners in scoring position, a big reason for the Tigers 4-0 start. The Tigers struggled in those situations against the Jayhawks, going 6-for-33 (.182) in RISP situations and leaving 26 runners stranded on base during the three-game series. LSU looks to bounce back this week against UL-Monroe and Houston in those situations, as the Tigers season average is a stillrobust.345 (29-for-84) in RISP situations. Of Tigers who have at least three at-bats in those situations, seven are hitting.364 or better, paced by a 4-for-10 ledger by Aaron Hill. Stuck in the starting blocks LSU s starting pitching had one of its toughest weekends in recent memory against Kansas, as Jake Tompkins, Brian Wilson and Nate Bumstead struggled against Kansas. The Jayhawks touched the Tigers starting trio for 19 runs (18 earned) on 27 hits in 14 2/3 innings pitched over the weekend, including nine extra base hits. Tompkins got no decision for the second straight outing, while Wilson and Bumstead each fell to 1-1 on the year. LSU starters have struck out 34 and walked only eight in 38 innings so far this year, but come into tonight s game with a 5.45 ERA. French makes first start With Dustin Weaver recuperating from a shoulder injury this past weekend, senior catcher Shawn French made his first career start in Sunday s second game against Kansas, becoming the 14th different position player to start at least one game for LSU this year. French made the most of his opportunity, collecting an RBI single in four trips to the plate, his second run-scoring hit of the season to go along with another RBI single at Centenary last Tuesday. In all, LSU has had eight first-time position starters in 2003.

4 Mr. Smith makes impressive debut With Lane Mestepey possibly out for the season following off-season shoulder surgery, LSU was hoping that freshman left-hander Greg Smith could step up and join Jason Determann as the only southpaws on the Tiger staff. Smith may not make Tiger fans forget Mestepey, a two-time All-SEC selection, but the Alexandria native is certainly ready to give it his best shot, as evidenced on Sunday. In the series finale with Kansas, Smith allowed just one hit and struck out three over two innings in his first LSU appearance, allowing the Tigers to nearly come back from a 9-3 deficit. Smith was named Mr. Baseball by the Louisiana Sportswriters Association following the 2002 season, as he went 9-0 with a mind-boggling 0.12 ERA for Alexandria Senior High, while also batting.479 with six home runs and 48 RBI as a first baseman for the Trojans. Smith was also the starting quarterback for three seasons on the ASH football team, following in the footsteps of a former Tiger, Craig Nall, now with the Green Bay Packers. Sadler still on zero Billy Sadler continues to be the most reliable member of the Tigers deep bullpen corps, posting a 0.00 ERA in four appearances over seven innings. His only bugaboo came in the ninth inning of Sunday s first game, as his errant pickoff throw allowed a Jayhawk runner to move from first base to third and eventually score an insurance run. Sadler is second on the Tiger staff with 10 strikeouts, trailing only Jake Tompkins 17 Bullpen continues fine work Despite the fact Brandon Nall took the loss in Friday s series opener with Kansas, the LSU bullpen continues to look sharp in the early going. Through seven games, Tiger relievers have posted a solid 1.50 ERA and have allowed only six runs (four earned) in 24 innings of work. The bullpen has allowed only a.258 opponents batting average while leaving six of seven inherited runners stranded on base. Horwath goes deep Matt Horwath showed unusual power for a player of his stature on Friday when he hit an opposite field home run in the sixth inning against Kansas, his first career round tripper at LSU. The freshman shortstop, the only Tiger to play in every inning so far this year, has also been solid in the field, committing only one error in 29 chances. Patterson has breakout weekend Ryan Patterson made the most of his opportunities in the starting lineup in Sunday s doubleheader, as the sophomore outfielder went 3-for-7 with four RBI, a double and his first career home run in the fourth inning of the second game. For the three-game set vs. Kansas, Patterson was 4- for-8, tying him for tops on the Tigers with Aaron Hill. Patterson is making a strong push for more playing time in the crowded outfield, as evidenced by his.438 batting average (7-for-16) and five RBI, tied for second on the club. Patterson has hit safely in the Tigers last five games, and is the only LSU player to hit safely in every game in which he has played in The mighty Quinn Of all the LSU newcomers for 2003, Quinn Stewart was thought to be the one who would provide the most power, and the sophomore from Texas certainly didn t disappoint last week. In the opener against Kansas on Friday, Stewart led off the bottom of the first with his first career home run, then added a pair of doubles to finish a 3-for-5 night, his first three-hit game and third multi-hit game of the season. Stewart finished the three-game set with Kansas batting.417 (5-for-12). Throw in a 2-for-5 night at Centenary last Tuesday, and Stewart enters tonight s game with a solid.360 average (9-for-25) and leads LSU in runs scored with seven. Hill steady as always Aaron Hill continues to provide leadership from the middle of the order, as he led the Tigers in hitting during the past week by going 6-for-13 (.462) with four runs scored, a home run and five RBI. The weekend pulled Hill s season average to.429 with three games of two hits on the year. The junior from California leads the Tigers in RBI with seven, slugging percentage (.714) and on-base percentage (.594). Hill is also batting.400 with runners in scoring position. Hill has also shown tremendous patience at the plate, using seven walks and three hit by pitches to augment his on-base percentage. In 32 plate appearances this season, Hill has struck out only once.

8 LSU Coach Smoke Laval Smoke Laval had a very successful first year as LSU s coach, leading the Tigers to the NCAA Super Regional round for the fourth consecutive year and posting a record. For his efforts, Laval was named the Louisiana Sportswriters Association Louisiana coach of the year. Laval was named Skip Bertman s successor on July 18, 2000, and spent the 2001 season as the LSU administrative assistant.
