16 River Cats ninth-inning rally comes up short against Topes Flores fans career-high in 2-0 loss to Albuquerque Albuquerque, NM The Sacramento River Cats (32-51) were unable to produce any late-inning fireworks in their 2-0 loss to the Albuquerque Isotopes (41-43) as they were shutout for the fifth time this year. Jose Flores made his 2017 season debut for Sacramento and was sensational, striking out a career-high 10 Isotopes hitters over his seven innings. The right-hander had Albuquerque s number tonight as he did not allow a hit until the fourth inning and yielded his one and only walk in the seventh. Right-hander Tyler Rogers relived Flores in the eighth but surrendered both runs, snapping his streak of five consecutive scoreless outings. Isotopes starter Sam Howard was just as effective however, racking up 10 strikeouts himself while allowing just three River Cats hits. Sacramento got things going in the ninth thanks to a pinch-hit single by Carlos Moncrief and a base knock by Juan Ciriaco but was unable to capitalize as Chris Shaw grounded into a game-ending double play. The River Cats will send right-hander Roberto Gomez (1-5, 6.54) to the mound for his sixth start of the season. Albuquerque will counter with right-hander Thad Webber (1-3, 6.97). First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. (PT) and the game can be heard live on the air on ESPN 1320 and online at rivercats.com. Postgame Notes Flores fantastic: Jose Flores made his first ever start with Sacramento he made 24 appearances with the River Cats in 2014 but never started needed just 86 pitches to get through his seven innings (61 strikes) and faced 22 batters his 10 strikeouts were also a teamhigh. Shaw: Left-fielder Chris Shaw extended his hitting streak to seven games after going 1-for-4 tonight hitting.483 (14-for-29) over that span. Rogers: Submariner Tyler Rogers surrendered just his sixth earned run on the road tonight over his 24.2 innings also gave up his first home run of the season. Moncrief: Carlos Moncrief collected his sixth hit off the bench tonight now 6-for-17 (.353) as a pinch hitter with three doubles and one RBI owns six of the team s 17 pinch hits. 17 Franchise Record 9,810 Fans Witness Thrilling Victory RVA - In front of a franchise record 9,810 fans at The Diamond, C.J. Hinojosa lined a walk-off base hit to right field as Richmond (34-49) defeated Erie (40-43), 4-3 on Independence Day. The Squirrels rallied back from a 3-1 deficit, scoring two runs in the eighth and the wining run in the bottom of the ninth. Squirrels starting pitcher Dan Slania worked seven solid innings in the nodecision and the bullpen duo of Jarret Martin and Tyler Cyr kept the game close. Cyr (3-1) earned the win with a scoreless ninth inning. The Squirrels snapped their five game losing streak and will seek to win the series on Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. Daniel Carbonell scored the winning run for Richmond on Hinojosa's base hit off Erie reliever Adam Ravenelle. Carbonell walked to begin the inning and advanced to second on a bunt base hit from Jeff Arnold. After Slade Heathcott popped up his bunt attempt, Hinojosa ripped a line drive passed the outstretched glove of second baseman Zack Cox to win the contest. Trailing 3-1 entering the eighth inning, the Squirrels tied up the game with a pair of runs off of lefty Jairo Labourt. Hinojosa and Gomez singled to begin the inning and advanced on a wild pitch. Erie catcher Time Remes then failed to corral an outside pitch, scoring Hinojosa from third base. Two batters later, K.C. Hobson smashed a double off the base of the wall to tie the game, 3-3. Dan Slania made the start for Richmond in his first appearance since making his MLB debut on Friday in Pittsburgh. Slania worked around a pair of base hits in the first inning by striking out Dominic Ficociello to end the frame. Slania turned it on in the second and retired eight consecutive batters until an error allowed Zack cox to reach in the fourth. Erie loaded the bases in the inning, but Slania induced a fly ball to left field to end the threat. Starting pitcher Beau Burrows was equally as impressive for Erie. Burrows put his blazing fastball on display in front of the capacity crowd at The Diamond. He fanned Slade Heathcott to begin the first inning and Myles Schroder to start the second. The prospect righty did not allow a hit over the first five innings in his longest Double-A outing to date. Richmond placed a pair of runners in scoring position in the fourth due to two walks, but Burrows punched out K.C. Hobson to strand them aboard. Erie snapped the scoreless affair with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning. Ficociello singled to right field and Christin Stewart worked a walk with one out. After Steven Moya popped up, Gabriel Quintana drilled a double off the left field wall for a 2-0 advantage. Slania finished the inning, using 92 pitches over the first six frames. Richmond eventually picked up theirvfirst hit of the game with one out in the bottom of the fifth. Miguel Gomez lashed a double to left field, the only hit allowed by Burrows. Erie left Burrows in to face one more batter after the double and he fanned Myles Schroder to end his outing. Reliever Sean Donatello replaced Burrows and yielded a double to Brandon Bednar, scoring Gomez to cut the deficit to 2-1.

18 Burrows allowed the one run on one hit in the no-decision. He walked four and struck out five on 96 pitches in the effort. After Richmond scored in the sixth, Erie quickly responded with run in the top of the seventh. Tim Remes doubled and scored on a sacrifice bunt to their. Harold Castro dropped a bunt to third and Myles Schroder overthrew the base at first, allowing Remes to score for a 3-1 Erie lead. Jarret Martin worked a eighth inning and Tyler Cyr picked up the win by tossing the ninth. Individual tickets, mini plans and group packages for the season are available by contacting the Flying Squirrels box office at or online at Giants Fall On The Fourth, 2-1 Quakes pitching shuts down San Jose in series opener SAN JOSE, CA - Three Rancho Cucamonga pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts with just one run allowed in a 2-1 Quakes victory over the San Jose Giants on the Fourth of July. In front of an Independence Day sellout crowd of 4,382 at Municipal Stadium, the Giants (36-47 overall, 6-7 second half) were held to seven hits in suffering the series-opening loss. Jonah Arenado (2-for-4) had a pair of singles to lead San Jose offensively in defeat. Rancho Cucamonga starter Devin Smeltzer (2-2) earned the win after limiting the Giants to just one run over six innings. Smeltzer allowed four hits, walked none and struck out eight. Andrew Thurman then worked a scoreless bottom of the seventh out of the bullpen before Andrew Istler struck out six over the eighth and ninth innings to record the save. Matt Krook started on the mound for San Jose and began his outing with three scoreless innings working around three hits. The Quakes though would breakthrough for a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Luke Raley led off with a single before DJ Peters was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Will Smith was up next and he blasted a double off the top of the fence in deep left to bring home Raley with the first run of the night. Krook recovered with back-to-back strikeouts of Johan Mieses and Ibandel Isabel before a walk to Omar Estevez. The ball four offering to Estevez, however, would skip away from catcher Aramis Garcia for a wild pitch as Peters raced home to make it 2-0. Meanwhile, Smeltzer faced just one batter over the minimum over the first four innings. Rehabbing San Francisco Giant Conor Gillaspie lined a single to left with two outs in the bottom

19 of the first, but was thrown out at second on the play attempting to stretch the hit into a double. The Giants' only other baserunner over the first four innings came when Bryan Reynolds reached on an error with one out in the fourth. Still down 2-0, San Jose rallied in the bottom of the fifth against Smeltzer scoring once. Dillon Dobson led off with a ringing double into the left center field gap before Gio Brusa singled to put runners on the corners. Ryan Howard followed with a sacrifice fly into center plating Dobson to cut the Rancho Cucamonga lead to 2-1. Arenado then singled before Ronnie Jebavy reached on an error with two outs to load the bases, but Smeltzer struck out Reynolds to end the inning and keep the Quakes in front. The Giants threatened in the bottom of the sixth, but came up empty against Smeltzer. With two outs, Dobson reached on an error before Brusa was hit by a pitch. Howard was up next and he ripped a line drive that deflected off the pitcher and was caught by a diving Zach McKinistry at second base. The outstanding defensive play ended the inning and maintained the one-run Rancho Cucamonga lead. Facing Thornton in the bottom of the seventh, Jebavy singled with two outs, but was stranded when Reynolds flied out. Istler then struck out the side in a perfect bottom of the eighth to keep the score at 2-1. In the bottom of the ninth, Istler registered two more strikeouts to begin the inning before Arenado blooped a single into shallow right. Jalen Miller was up next and he beat out a slow roller to shortstop for an infield hit as pinch-runner, Junior Amion, advanced to second. However with the potential tying and winning runs on base, Istler struck out Jebavy on three pitches to end the game. Krook (3-8) suffered the loss after allowing two runs (both earned) on six hits over the first five innings. The left-hander walked two and struck out six during his 93-pitch outing. Notes * Tuesday was the opener of a seven-game homestand for the Giants. * San Jose and Rancho Cucamonga both finished with seven hits. * The teams combined for 29 strikeouts with Quakes pitchers fanning 15 and Giants hurlers striking out 14. * San Jose fell to 2-6 against Rancho Cucamonga this season. The Giants have scored only 17 runs in eight games versus the Quakes (2.1 per game). * Michael Cederoth tossed two perfect innings of relief striking out four for San Jose. Caleb Simpson (1 2/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 SO) and Carlos Diaz (1/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO) also appeared out of the Giants bullpen. * Gillaspie played the first six innings at third base and finished 1-for-3 with a single.
