Wintry weather cancelled four games, including two games for UNM. New Mexico lost to the Ole Miss Rebels and gained a tie with Indiana University after day one action. New Mexico s game with

2 Indiana was called with the score tied - after seven innings due to darkness. The game will officially be scored as a tie and will not be made up. This is only the second tie game in UNM softball history, the first being a - deadlock with the University of Utah last year. In the first game, Megan Kozar s infield single scored DeDe Justice in the bottom of the eleventh inning as the Ole Miss Rebels stormed back from an early - deficit to beat the University of New Mexico - in innings. New Mexico s Cassie Chavez hit a sacrifice fly in the top half of the th, scoring Lauren McCoy to give the Lobos a - lead heading into the bottom half of the inning, where the Rebels won it with two runs. The game was played under International Softball Rules, which allows each team to start off with a runner on second base when games go to extra innings. Desiree Layman hit a leadoff double to score Brooke Turner to tie the game at -. New Mexico nearly forced an additional frame after Ole Miss loaded the bases with no outs when UNM pitcher Amy Dumas forced Nicole Alger to hit into a - - double play, leaving the Rebels with runners on second and third and two outs. Kozar then hit a sharp liner off third baseman Krystal Mejia (which was ruled a hit) to give the Rebels its first lead of the game and the win. The Rebels Lindsey Whatley ( - ) pitched / innings of strong relief to earn the win, allowing only two runs on two hits. She entered the game for Lindsay Price, who had allowed runs in the first four innings of the game. Amy Dumas ( - ) earned the loss in / innings of relief, allowing four runs on seven hits. Hayley Punter started the game for the Lobos and gave up six hits and six runs in four innings of work. Offensively, Ole Miss outhit the Lobos -, and seven Rebel batters had two hits on the afternoon. Phyllis Manley, Layman and Turner all had two hits and two RBIs. For the Lobos, catcher Tiffani Chambers went - with RBIs, while centerfielder Kelly Glass was - with one RBI and a run scored. New Mexico got off to another fast start in the second game against Indiana, scoring two quick runs on a Tiffani Chambers two-run homer to stake UNM to a - lead after one inning of play. Indiana scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at -. IU s Heather Stillians hit a leadoff, solo homerun in the bottom of the fifth to cut lead to -, then Heather Suca hit a bases-loaded single to knock in Katie Joy to finish the game s scoring at -. On day two against IU, UNM rallied, but fell short, losing - to the Hoosiers. Down - in the bottom of the seventh inning, New Mexico rallied with two runs on three straight hits off IU starting pitcher Valerie Stillians. Junior Kelly Glass led off with a single up the middle and advanced to second on another single by senior Michelle Carter. Senior Tiffani Chambers then followed with a well-hit double into the gap in left-center field, scoring Glass and Carter. Pinch runner Briawna Schultz moved to third base on senior Brooke Chaffee s ground out, but would get no closer. Senior Cayley Warner hit a come-backer to Stillians for the second out and freshman Krystal Mejia ground out to third baseman Stormy Hanson to end the game. Indiana gained its three-run advantage with a big two-out rally in the top of the seventh inning off Lobo freshman Lauren McCoy. After allowing catcher Brooke Monroe to steal second base with one out, McCoy struck out Hoosier second baseman Heather Suca for the second out of the inning. However, the going got tough for McCoy as Hanson first baseman Dawn Ramynke crushed back-to-back homeruns, followed by a single by outfielder Ashley Griffiths. Sophomore Amy Dumas came on in relief and after allowing the next batter to reach base, escaped further damage by inducing leftfielder Abby Stark to ground out to shortstop Sabrina Sandberg. Chambers and Carter paced UNM with three hits, including one double, apiece. In all, eight different Lobos recorded hits. Despite the loss, McCoy pitched fairly well, striking out three batters in just. innings of work. Meanwhile, for Indiana, Stillians improved to - on the season, allowing four runs on hits, while striking out one in seven innings. 8 High hopes, we ve got high hopes. That might be the song you can catch New Mexico head coach Susan Craig singing to herself this year. And high hopes is just what this Lobo team is wanting to build on. With two returning pitchers that saw their way onto all-conference and all-region teams, four returning upperclassman that have found their way into UNM s record books and seven newcomers, this is a team that is full of high hopes and expectations. The difference between the way we played last year and the way we play this year will be our attitude and commitment, said head coach Susan Craig. I feel that this team knows how to win and their level of commitment is high and therefore we re already expecting to win. There is no question that UNM was more talented last year and they had some big wins in February and March. But as the Lobos Kelly Glass entered their conference schedule it became clear that UNM was not showing the competitive nature and toughness that it takes to win championships. We feel that this year s team understands the necessasity fo those qualities and our new players are very reflective of that need, coach Craig said. We continue to be more athletic and our biggest strides seem to be in the area of positive leadership. The following is a position-by-position breakdown of this year s team: PITCHERS New Mexico should have one of the best pitching staffs in the country. The Lobos return two sophomores in Amy Dumas and Hayley Punter. Punter led the team in strikeouts with 158, putting her fourth on UNM s single-season charts. Punter was chosen all-conference for her play. Dumas led the team and the conference with her 1.09 ERA. She earned all-region honors and was named the Mountain West Conference pitcher of the week twice. In their learning curves they had some ups and downs but they complimented each other very well and they showed the kind of heart and commitment we need, Craig said. Joining the team are two freshman, Lauren McCoy and Zara Mee. McCoy gained her experience in California travel ball while Mee has learned her trade while playing for 2002 O 2002 OUTLOOK the Australian national team. Lauren is a true freshman with great potential, Craig said. Zara is one of the top pitchers in the world who has already pitched against and beaten some of America s best hitters. INFIELDERS UNM returns three strong infielders in Elena Cranmer, Brooke Chaffee and Sabrina Sandberg. Cranmer was only one of four players to finish the year batting above.300. She started in 56 of 59 games at first base. At second, Brooke Chaffee returns from another solid season that saw her start every conference game and help the Lobos turn a league-leading 31 doubleplays. Sabrina Sandberg should take over for Marianna Fenelli at short stop. Sandberg comes from a talented family. Sandberg, who s uncle is Ryne Sandberg, has impressed the Lobo coaches with her potential. She appeared in 40 games. Three newcomers for the Lobos this year will be Krystal Mejia, Cassie Calderon and Lauren McCoy. Mejia is a strong candidate at second and third. McCoy can play either first or third when she s not on the mound and Calderon has experience at short and third. Mejia and McCoy are strong experienced infielders and we expect them both to see a lot of playing time, Craig said. We will continue to train Calderon at shorstop but she should see a great deal of playing time in the outfield. She has a great arm, gets good jumps and has tremendous speed. OUTFIELDERS The Lobos return three solid outfielders in seniors Cayley Warner and Michelle Carter and junior Kelly Glass. Warner started 54 of UNM s 56 games in left field. She batted over.300 for most of the season and finished the year with a solid.284 average. She was second on the team with 22 stolen bases and is now in second place on UNM s career stolen bases chart with 72. Carter came to UNM from Highlands College and she showed great potential right away. She played in 53 games and hit three homeruns with 29 RBIs for the Lobos. Glass is the strongest returner in the outfield. Glass has tremendous leadership and an aggressive nature that Coach Craig feels is very beneficial for the team. She led the team in stolen bases with 26 and is now in fifth place on New Mexico s career list. Her 26 stolen bases puts her tied for third on the single-season charts. She led the team with her.362 overall average and her.424 average in conference games. Freshman Calderon will also train for a spot in the outfield this year. Our returning players all bring different skills to their positions, Craig said. We will be looking hard for a couple more players to give us some added depth in the outfield area and also to push our starters. Defense is always important but we need to get more offense going and our outfielders will factor into that strategy. CATCHERS The catcher position is as solid as ever. The Lobos have two solid returners and one extremely talented first-year player. Senior Tiffani Chambers and sophomore Kim Korsak return for the Lobos and will be joined by freshman Briawna Schultz. Chambers is easily one of New Mexico s top catcher from a technical perspective. She has a strong arm and outstanding defense. Cayley Warner She played in 54 of UNM s 56 games and had a slugging percentage of.316. She had only one error for a.996 fielding percentage. Korsak saw action in 29 games with a.310 average. She also saw action in eight conference games and has proven that she could potentially work herself into a starting spot. She is fundamentally very solid and has great quickness and speed. The returners will be pushed by Schultz who with some work could become the Lobos starting catcher. We need some strong leadership from our catchers and we need them to raise their level of overall play, Craig said. From what I ve seen in practice so far they are working harder and showing more confidence. Optimism and high hopes surrounds the Lobos camp entering The players are award and their coach is quick to impress upon them that they have the talent and the experience but they haven t accomplished anything yet. However, with 10 letterwinners returning and seven newcomers why couldn t this be the year and the team that rewrites New Mexico history? Brooke Chaffee

9 Head Coach Susan Craig Let s talk numbers. Susan Craig has been at New Mexico for 26 years. She has 654 career wins which ranks her tied for 14th in wins by active Division I coaches. With her 654 wins it puts her tied for17th all-time in the NCAA for career victories. In 17 of the 26 years that Craig has been at New Mexico, she has coached teams to national rankings. Her softball teams have been consistently among the most successful programs at the University of New Mexico. After over 1,000 games, three conference championships and several national postseason appearances, Craig knows what it takes to run a successful program. More importantly, she is a teacher. A teacher with a wealth of knowledge. In this, her 26th year as the head coach of the Lobos, Craig sees a Lobo team that is capable of taking UNM to the next level. And this is not a coach who comes without credentials. Craig was the first-ever president of the National Softball Coaches Association. The organization was created to create uniformity and better working conditions for coaches across the country. In 1993, Craig s achievements were honored as she was named to the New Mexico branch of the American Softball Association s Hall of Fame. In 1991, she was also honored by being named to the the Albuquerque Baseball and Softball Hall of Fame. Her recognition by the two halls of fame were surely due to the aggregate of her contribution to the softball community throughout the state. But in 1996, Craig was recognized nationally for a feat that was based purely on performance. The National Softball Coaches Association presented her with an award recognizing her achievement of reaching the 500-win milestone in her career. By receiving the award, she became a member of what is known as the Easton Victory Club. In 2000, Craig crossed the 600-win plateau, putting her in even more elite company. In 1999, Craig was named Western Athletic Conference Co-Coach of the Year along with Fresno State s Margie Wright. Craig s current overall record is Her 654 wins rank her in the top 25 of all NCAA Division I head softball coaches who are active and it ranks her tied for 17th of all who have ever coached in Division I. Active in the community, Craig has often played a part in helping the youth of the Albuquerque area learn about softball as well as life lessons. One of the programs she has been involved in is the YES Youth Program that was created by the NCAA. The YES Program exposes children to sports while educating them about the pitfalls of drugs and alcohol. Over the past couple of years, Craig and the Lobo softball program have established a Camp for Kids program. The program is a week-long camp that gives girls between the ages of nine and 12 a chance to attend softball camp, when normally their families would not be able to afford it. Along with her pursuits in the community, Craig has also authored a couple of books on softball strategy. The Softball Handbook was written to help in the overall understanding of softball fundamentals and has been used throughout the U.S. and other English speaking countries as a standard tool to that end. Power Offense was another book written by Craig and former assistant Ken Johnson thats scope ranges from hitting, to attacking defenses with aggressive baserunning, to implementing an offensive strategy. Craig s area of expertise with the Lobos - and the one where her influence will be seen the most - will be with the infielders. Craig herself was an infielder and one that garnered attention as a fine player. A second baseman by nature, Craig played major ASA fastpitch softball and was three times an all-region selection for her team. The Western Athletic Conference s Coach-of-the-Year in 1992 and 1999, Craig has helped produce four All-Americans, 39 all-region and 46 all-conference athletes. She also coached one player (Dena Mullins) to WAC Player-of-the-Year honors and another (Heather Medearis) to conference Freshman-of-the-Year recognition. A 1970 graduate of the University of New Mexico, Craig is a native of Albuquerque. won three conference championships. Last season she crossed the 600-win plateu and two years ago she was named the Western Athletic Conference Co-Coach of the Year. Craig s overall record stands at Her 654 wins ranks her 14th in NCAA Division I winningest active coaches and puts her 17th in the All- Time winningest coaches category. Double Double Toil and Trouble The 2001 Lobos proved their defense was one of the best. The Lobos turned 31 double plays already this year while their opponents turned nine. In conference games the Lobos turned a league-leading nine double plays. Last season the Lobos finished with 36 double-plays. Elena Cranmer was the leader for helping the turn the most as she assisted in 24 of the 31 double-plays. The infield duo of Brooke Chaffee and Marianna Fenelli have combined to help turn all 31. Catching Kathy Senior Kathy Moore is in UNM s career and season annals in several categories. Moore is the Lobos career homerun leader with 36, she s second for runs batted in with 132 and she s the leader with 150 walks. In the pitching records she s first with 114 appearances, second with 66 complete games, second with 578 innings pitched and is fifth with 233 strikeouts. Stealing Home Junior Cayley Warner finished the year in New Mexico s career records for stolen bases. She s nabbed 22 bases on 24 attempts this year and she is currently sits in second place on the career records with 72. Two more Lobo baserunning specialists are Krissy Keene and Kelly Glass. Keene finished the year in steals with 31 runs scored while Kelly Glass led the team with 26 stolen bases on 32 attempts with 22 runs scored. She now has 53 stolen bases for her career and is in fifth place on UNM s career list.

10 Freshman Firepower Freshman pitchers Hayley Punter and Amy Dumas started in 40 of UNM's games and Dumas finished the year leading the team with a 1.09 ERA, she had 83 strikeouts in innings of work. She allowed only 28 earned runs. Batters hit.223 against Dumas. She was named the Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week twice and received All-Tournament honors at the Mountain West Conference Tournament and the Capital Classic tournament. Punter, the kid from Down Under, finished the season leading the team with 158 strikeouts in innings. She earned MWC Pitcher of the Week honors once. Punter finished the year ranked in fifth place on the season list for strikeouts. She averaging 5.1 strikeouts per appearance. Hot Bats Four Lobo batters finished the season with averages of.300 or above: Kelly Glass (.362), Kim Korsak (.310), Krissy Keene (.308) and Elena Cranmer (.302) while Kathy Moore (.292) and Cayley Warner (.284) were right on their heels. The Lobos scored 250 runs, 80 more than their opponents, and had 103 extra base hits to their opponents 69. UNM's offensive power was evident in the team pitching stats, as New Mexico had a team ERA of 2.17 while the Lobos hit their opponents into a 3.26 team ERA. Aussie Sensation The Lobos latest pitching sensation is Hayley Punter. She came to New Mexico by way of Australia. Punter, already a veteran to softball, played on the Australian Junior National Team and before she came to America was chosen to play on the Australian National Team. Punter has also played softball in Italy. Punter led the team all year in strikeouts and finished the season with 158 while walking only 46 batters for a K:BB ratio of 3.4. Notable Stats The Lobos had a season-high 38 at-bats against San Diego State on May 11, during the MWC softball tournament The most runs scored last year for was against Michigan State when they logged 13 Against Michigan State the Lobos had their most hits for the year with 15 Against Michigan State UNM had 10 RBIs, the most for the season In the first game against Ole Miss last year the Lobos recorded four doubles for a season-high Against Colorado State the Lobos were walked eight times, conversely against Stanford the Lobos struck out 16 times Defensively UNM had 27 putouts against Utah and 19 assists against Portland State The Lobos had a season-high five errors against Sacramento State The Lobos turned two double-playes in a game three times on the year; against Kansas on Feb. 4, California on March 3 and Santa Clara on March 14 On the mound Hayley Punter struck out 12 batters against Colorado State while Punter and Amy Dumas combined to sit down nine Texas A&M Corpus Christi players Michelle Carter had two triples in the doubleheader against Santa Clara Marianna Fenelli hit a grand slam homerun against CSU, her first and the team s second on the year. 11 The 2001 University of New Mexico softball team was hoping to capitalize on senior leadership and new pitching. The Lobos hosted the Mountan West Conference Championship and they were hoping to walk away from Lobo Field as not only the MWC champion but a team that was going to the NCAA tournament. Unfortunately that scenario did not play out like UNM or head coach Susan Craig would have liked. New Mexico finished the 2001 season with a record one of the best records in school history. The Lobos faced much tougher competition in 2001 just as it will again in The Lobos conference record was and UNM saw themselves split almost every conference doubleheader. They did not sweep a doubleheader weekend or an MWC opponent. The 2001 season began with mixed results as UNM placed third in its own Diamond Invitationa. The Lobos had no trouble with Ole Miss, winning both games 4-3 and 2-0, but it faltered against Kansas and split with Cal State Fullerton. Both teams would later stake their claim among the top 15 teams in the NFCA poll. The Lobos lost 7-6 and 2-1 to the Jayhawks and against Fullerton both teams put some big numbers on the board. The Titans won the first game 11-3 but UNM would come back and win the second game New Mexico would then continue on what appeared to be a great season. They traveled to San Diego and participated in the Campbell/Cartier Classic and went 2-3 there with an overall record of 5-6. The Lobos then traveled to Columbus, Georgia to participate in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Classic. This is the first time that UNM has been invited to participate. The Lobos defeated Michigan State and Washington but would lose two to Southern Mississippi and one to Nebraska.be what could only be considered sporadic. UNM would then come home and sweep intrastate rival New Mexico State. The Lobos then traveled back to California for spring break. They would take two from Santa Clara before moving on to the Capital Classic hosted by Sacramento State. UNM went 7-1 at the Capital Classic defeating host Sacramento State, Morehead State, Louisville, Texs A&M Corpus Christi, Eastern Illinois and Purdue before finally losing to Texas Tech Ṫhe Lobos then traveled to Texas to play in the March Madness Tournament hosted by Texas A&M Corpus Christ after a doubleheader at New Mexico State. They would go on a run of seven-straight wins before traveling home to open up conference play. At the March Madness Tournament the Lobos defeated Brown, Centenary and host Texas A&M CC. As its long tournament season ended, New Mexico was ready to begin conference play. The Lobos went in the preseason and they were more then ready to take on their conference rivals. First up was defending champion, Utah. The two teams would split the doubleheader with Utah having to rally to win game one, In game two UNM tied the game up in the bottom of the seventh but Utah would come right back. The game would go to the ninth with neither team getting the advantage. The game was called on account of darkness tied at 5-5, it would be UNM s first tie game in school history. The Lobos were hoping to bounce back against BYU the next day. The Cougars scored two runs in the fourth and sixth innings to rally and defeat UNM, 4-1 in the 2001 R 2001 REVIEW game one. But in game two the Lobos scattered single hits over the second, third, fifth and sixth innings to come out the victor, 4-3. New Mexico then hosted Colorado State sweeping the Rams, 2-1 and UNM s next game was San Diego State. The Lobos were unable to capitalize on their sweep of the Rams as they split another conference doubleheader with the Aztecs. New Mexico lost game one, 5-4 in 11 innings. But game two was all UNM as they got to the Aztec pitchers early and the game was called after five innings with UNM winning 9-0. UNM then matched up with UNLV and again a split was all they could manage. The Rebels won game one 4-2 while the Lobos took game two UNM Softball Schedule/Results Date Opponent Site/Time/Result Feb. 1 vs. Ole Miss (DH)< W, 4-3/W, 4-0 Feb. 2 vs. Kansas< L, 6-7 Feb. 3 vs. Fullerton (DH)<~ L, 2-10/W, 11-2 Feb. 4 vs. Kansas<~ L, 1-2 Feb. 16 vs. Stanford! Again splits would be the key word for UNM. Against BYU the Lobos would win game one 2-0 but the Cougars bounced back and shut out UNM, 7-0 in game two. Then it was onto Utah. The Lobos won game one 2-1 but Utah, like BYU, would bounce back and win game two 9-1. The Lobos then traveled to Colorado State, a team they had swept easily in the beginning of the conference season. This time it was a different Ram team. UNM would get swept by CSU, 3-0 and 4-2. New Mexico would exact some revenge as they would sweep UNLV the very next weekend. The Lobos won game one 4-2 and game two 6-0. The Lobos would finish out the regular season at San Diego State. The Aztecs would win game one, 1-0. In game two the Lobos got on the board first and Amy Dumas was able to hold off SDSU as the Lobos won 1-0. At the Mountain West tourney, the Lobos would face up with Colorado State for the fifth time in the 2001 season. This time UNM would learn from past mistakes and they defeated the Rams 2-0. In the second game against BYU the Cougars would win a close one, 4-3. Game three against UNLV saw New Mexico scoring three runs in the first three innings and pitcher Amy Dumas giving up only one run in the 3-1 Lobo victory. Game four against San Diego State would have moved the Lobos into the semifinal game. But the Aztecs would again have to go into extra innings to defeat UNM. SDSU would win 4-3 in 10 innings. Individually, it was a tremendous season for UNM from top to bottom. Kathy Moore became UNM s career home run leader finishing her career with 36. Moore also ended up 3rd in runs with 103, 4th in hits with 194, 4th in doubles with 35, 2nd in RBIs with 132, 1st in walks with 150, and 2nd in at-bats with 626. In pitching statistics, Moore was tops in several categories. In appearances she was 1st with 114, in complete games she was 2nd with 66 and in innings pitched she was 2nd with 578. Kelly Glass would break onto UNM s career charts. She would finish the season tied for 2nd with a.336 batting average. She is also in fifth place with 52 stolen bases. Cayley Warner is in 2nd place on that same list with 72 stolen bases and should be able to jump into first after her senior season. Marianna Fenelli also finished her career out and made it onto the career charts. She ended up 2nd in runs with 149, 5th in hits with 191 and 1st in doubles with 48. In pitching, UNM s two freshman made quite an impression. Amy Dumas would finish the year leading the team and the conference in ERA with That ERA would land her tied for 3rd place on the career list. Hayley Punter was in two season records. She started 28 games which put her tied for 3rd and her 158 strikeouts on the season put her in 4th place. Punter, Moore and Glass would all be named all-conference with Dumas and Fenelli earning all-tournament honors for the MWC tournament. Dumas, Moore and Glass were also chosen all-region. Head coach Susan Craig feels that the Lobos just did not reach their potential. Our major disappointment was not winning the conference championship, especially when we hosted. said Susan Craig. We need some players to step up and be our leaders and when that happens we ll be a team to watch out for. With four seniors returning the Lobos should get the leadership they re looking for.
