2 weekend. New Mexico is LOBO LEADERS: Despite dropping two of three, UNM began to come alive vs. Texas Tech, piling up 24 hits in the three games. Kelly Glass led the way, going 7-12 in the series to raise her team-leading batting average to.462 on the season. The Lobos leadoff hitter swiped four more bases in the series, increasing her team-high total to 13 on the year, and also leads the squad with a.491 OBP and 7 runs scored. Brooke Chaffee leads the team with 9 extra base-hits (.625 SLG%), is second on the team with a.354 average and is tied with Tiffany Chambers for the team-lead with 8 RBIs. On the mound, Hayley Punter (3-4) and Amy Dumas (2-4) have handled the starting duties, while Lauren McCoy (0-1) has made four appearances in relief. Punter fanned 9 Red Raiders in 14 innings of work last week, giving her a teamhigh 35 Ks on the year. She also leads the staff in innings pitched (51), complete games (8) and ERA (4.06), while limiting opponents to a team-best.290 batting average. Dumas has notched 2 complete games in 42.2 innings, while McCoy has struck out 11 batters in just 12 innings of relief. ABOUT DePAUL: DePaul swept a doubleheader at the Georgia State Tournament improving to 10-2 this season. The 15thranked Blue Demons dropped Birmingham Southern in the opener 9-2 and got by Troy State 8-5 in game two. The Blue Demons have five players batting over.400 with two of them right aat.500. As a team they are batting.307 to their opponents.176. On the mound, Lindsay Chouinard leads the way with a 0.34 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 41.2 innings pitched. ABOUT ARIZONA STATE: Jennifer Forner lead the team with a.357 batting average as the seventh-ranked Arizona State softball team (23-6) was declared the National Invitational Softball Tournament champion Sunday. The Sun Devils, who posted a 4-2 mark in the tournament, was the only team in the 14- team field to make it all the way through bracket play to the championship game undefeated (3-0), therefore earning the LOBOS WHEN... at home 1-4 on the road at neutral sites 4-5 vs. conference teams 0-0 vs. ranked teams 0-3 in day games in night games 1-1 longest winning streak 2 longest losing streak 3 leading after five innings 5-0 trailing after five innings 0-7 tied after five innings 0-2 in one-run games 3-3 in two-run games 0-1 in five-plus-run games 2-3 in extra inning games 0-2 in shutouts 2-4 when Dumas starts 3-3 when Punter starts 2-5 vs. left-handed pitcher 1-0 vs. right-handed pitcher home attendance away attendance total attendance 196 (49 avg.) 402 (36 avg.) 598 (39 avg.) 3 tournament title. The NIST title is the second in the past three years for Arizona State and the third title (1990) for the Sun Devils in the history of the tournament. The Sun Devils are being led by Phelan Wright with a.425 batting average and on the mound they are paced by Erica Beach with a 0.66 ERA in 106 innings of work. Beach has given up only 10 earned runs and has struck out 83. ABOUT TEXAS: The University of Texas softball team shut down the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles 5-0 and 4-0 to record its sixth consecutive shutout and improve to 20-7 on the year, have not allowed a run to score in the last 38.1 innings, setting a UT team season record. The six consecutive wins also is a season-high winning streak. The Longhorns are led by Wynter Turner with a.444 average. On the mound, Amy Bradford is 7-1 with a 0.93 ERA in 60 innings. HEAD COACH SUSAN CRAIG: Let s talk numbers. Susan Craig has been at New Mexico for 26 years. She has 654 career wins which ranks her tied for 14th in wins by active Division I coaches. With her 654 wins it puts her tied for17th all-time in the NCAA for career victories. In 17 of the 26 years that Craig has been at New Mexico, she has coached teams to national rankings. Her softball teams have been consistently among the most successful programs at the University of New Mexico. After over 1,000 games and three conference champions, Craig knows what it takes to run a successful program. More importantly, she is a teacher. A teacher with a wealth of knowledge. Craig is not a coach who comes without credentials. Craig was the first-ever president of the National Softball Coaches Association. The organization was created to create uniformity and better working conditions for coaches across the country. In 1993, Craig s achievements were honored as she was named to the New Mexico branch of the American Softball Association s Hall of Fame. In 1991, she was also honored by being named to the the Albuquerque Baseball and Softball Hall of Fame. Her recognition by the two halls of fame were surely due to the aggregate of her contribution to the softball community throughout the state. But in 1996, Craig was recognized nationally for a feat that was based purely on performance. The National Softball Coaches Association presented her with an award recognizing her achievement of reaching the 500-win milestone in her career. By receiving the award, she became a member of what is known as the Easton Victory Club. In 2000, Craig crossed the 600-win plateau, putting her in even more elite company. In 1999, Craig was named Western Athletic Conference Co-Coach of the Year along with Fresno State s Margie Wright. Craig s current overall record is Her 654 wins rank her in the top 25 of all NCAA Division I head softball coaches who are active and it ranks her tied for 17th of all who have ever coached in Division I. Over the past couple of years, Craig and the Lobo softball program have established a Camp for Kids program. The program is a week-long camp that gives girls between the ages of nine and 12 a chance to attend softball camp, when normally their families would not be able to afford it. Along with her pursuits in the community, Craig has also authored a couple of books on softball strategy. The Softball Handbook was written to help in the overall understanding of softball fundamentals and has been used throughout the U.S. and other English speaking countries as a standard tool to that end. Power Offense was another book written by Craig and former assistant Ken Johnson thats scope ranges from hitting, to attacking defenses with aggressive baserunning, to implementing an offensive strategy. Craig s area of expertise with the Lobos - and the one where her influence will be seen the most - will be with the infielders. Craig herself was an infielder and one that garnered attention as a fine player. A second baseman by nature, Craig played major ASA fast-pitch softball and was three times an all-region selection for her team. The Western Athletic Conference s Coach-of-the-Year in 1992 and 1999, Craig has helped produce four All-Americans, 39 all-region and 46 all-conference athletes. She also coached one player (Dena Mullins) to WAC Player-of-the-Year honors and another (Heather Medearis) to conference Freshman-of-the-Year recognition. A 1970 graduate of the University of New Mexico, Craig is a native of Albuquerque. DOUBLE DOUBLE TOIL AND TROUBLE: In the past two season the Lobos have turned 67 double-plays. Last year UNM led the conference with nine. This year the Lobos have turned four double-plays to their opponents 1. RECORD-SETTERS: Kelly Glass recorded her 65th career stolen base on March 6, putting her in a tie for 3rd on the UNM alltime list. Teammate Cayley Warner is currently second with 78 career steals, just 11 shy of the top slot. In pitching, UNM has two players that have made an impression. Amy Dumas finished last year with a 1.09 ERA, that landed her 3rd on the career chart. Hayley Punter found herself in two season records. She started 28 games last year which put her tied for 3rd and her 158 strikeouts on the season put her in 4th place. AUSSIE SENSATION: The Lobos latest pitching sensation is Hayley Punter. She came to New Mexico by way of Australia. Punter, already a veteran to softball, played on the Australian Junior National Team and before she came to America was chosen to play on the Australian National Team. Punter has also played softball in Italy. Punter led the team all last year in strikeouts and finished the season with 158 while walking only 46 batters for a K/BB ratio of 3.4. This season she has fanned 35 in 51 innings, while issuing just 8 walks, good for a K/BB ratio of 4.4. THAT S RANK: Three of the Lobos seven losses have come at the hand of ranked opponents. UNM lost to Pacific who at the time was tied for 19th. Then at the NFCA Classic UNM lost to #5 LSU and #9 Nebraska. Nebraska would eventually go on to win the NFCA Tournament. New Mexico is slated to face at least two top-25 opponents, #15 DePaul and seventh-ranked Arizona State, at this weekend s Kia Klassic. LOBOS PICKED FOURTH IN THE MOUNTAIN WEST: The Lobos were picked to finish fourth in the Mountain West Conference preseason coaches poll. The Lobos received one first place vote and finished with 17 total points. Utah was the first place pick with two votes and 21 total points. The Utes narrowly edged out BYU who received three votes for 20 total points. GAME RECAPS DIAMOND INVITATIONAL: The Lobos had to battle with Indiana University, Ole Miss and the weather as it opened the 2002 season hosting its annual Diamond Invitational. Wintry weather cancelled four games, including two games for UNM. New Mexico lost to the Ole Miss Rebels and gained a tie with Indiana University after day one action. New Mexico s game with Indiana was called with the score tied 2-2 after

Team (1st) Points 2001 Record 1. Utah (2) / BYU (3) / San Diego State / New Mexico (1) / UNLV / Colorado State /7-12 seven innings due to darkness. The game will officially be scored as a tie and will not be made up. This is only the second tie game in UNM softball history, the first being a 5-5 deadlock with the University of Utah last year. In the first game, the Ole Miss Rebels stormed back from an early 6-0 deficit to beat the University of New Mexico 10-9 in 11 innings. New Mexico s Cassie Chavez hit a sacrifice fly in the top half of the 11th, scoring Lauren McCoy to give the Lobos a 9-8 lead heading into the bottom half of the inning, where the Rebels won it with two runs. The game was played under International Softball Rules. The Rebels hit a leadoff double to tie the game at 9-9. New Mexico nearly forced an additional frame after Ole Miss loaded the bases with no outs when UNM pitcher Amy Dumas forced Ole Miss to hit into a double play, leaving the Rebels with runners on second and third and two outs. A sharp liner off third baseman Krystal Mejia (which was ruled a hit) gave the Rebels its first lead of the game and the win. Dumas (0-1) earned the loss in 6 2/3 innings of relief, allowing four runs on seven hits. Hayley Punter started the game for the Lobos and gave up six hits and six runs in four innings of work. Offensively, Ole Miss outhit the Lobos 15-8, and seven Rebel batters had two hits on the afternoon. For the Lobos, catcher Tiffani Chambers went 2-4 with 3 RBIs, while centerfielder Kelly Glass was 2-4 with one RBI and a run scored. New Mexico got off to another fast start in the second game against Indiana, scoring two quick runs on a Chambers two-run homer to stake UNM to a 2-0 lead after one inning of play. Indiana scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 2-2. IU hit a leadoff, solo homerun in the bottom of the fifth to cut lead to 2-1, then a bases-loaded single tied the game at 2-2. On day two against IU, UNM rallied, but fell short, losing 5-4 to the Hoosiers. Down 5-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, New Mexico rallied with two runs on three straight hits off IU s starting pitcher. Junior Kelly Glass led off with a single up the middle and advanced to second on another single by senior Michelle Carter. Senior Tiffani Chambers then followed with a well-hit double into the gap in left-center field, scoring Glass and Carter. Pinch runner Briawna Schultz moved to third base on senior Brooke Chaffee s ground out, but would get no closer. Indiana gained its three-run advantage with a big twoout rally in the top of the seventh inning off Lobo freshman

5 Lauren McCoy. After allowing the catcher to steal second base with one out, McCoy struck out the Hoosier second baseman for the second out of the inning. However, the going got tough for McCoy as the first baseman crushed a homerun, followed by a single by the centerfielder. Sophomore Amy Dumas came on in relief and after allowing the next batter to reach base, escaped further damage by inducing the leftfielder to ground out to shortstop Sabrina Sandberg. Chambers and Carter paced UNM with three hits, including one double, apiece. In all, eight different Lobos recorded hits. Despite the loss, McCoy pitched fairly well, striking out three batters in just 4.2 innings of work. CAMPBELL/CARTIER CLASSIC RECAP: The University of New Mexico (2-2-1) grabbed their first two wins of the 2002 season today as they defeated Cal State Northridge and Sacramento State in the first day of the Campbell/Cartier Softball Tournament hosted by San Diego State. Against Sacramento State the Lobos scored early and often as they won a long game, Amy Dumas on the mound for the Lobos picked up her win, evening her record at 1-1. In game two the Lobos defeated perennial powerhouse, Cal State Northridge 1-0. Hayley Punter picked up her first win for UNM. On the day, Brooke Chaffee was 5-8 with three doubles and four RBI. The Lobos turned three double-plays on the day. Last season UNM led the conference in double-plays turned and set a new school record. San Diego, CA-Day two at the Campbell/Cartier Classic at San Diego State had the New Mexico Lobos (2-3-1) unable to capitalize on two big wins yesterday as they dropped a 6-0 decision to Pacific. Hayley Punter, on the mound, picked up the loss and is now 1-1 on the year. Lauren McCoy was a bright light for UNM. The freshman had some stellar defensive plays while also whacking a double and walking twice to get on base. NFCA LEADOFF CLASSIC RECAP: The Lobos split in the first day of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Leadoff Classic. UNM lost to #5 LSU in game one, 5-0, but bounced back against Illinois-Chicago, winning 5-4. In game one against Illinois-Chicago, the Flames got on the board first scoring three runs in the first inning. The Lobos were able to get two runs across the board in the third inning and then in the fifth innin the Lobos scored the winning run on an error by the Flames third baseman. Amy Dumas (2-1) picked up the win. Glass was again big for the Lobos as she went 2-3. Chaffee was also 2-3 with another double and she now leads the team with 17 doubles. Hayley Punter got her first at-bat of her collegiate career. Punter hit a two-rbi double in the third inning. Against LSU, the Lobos were only able to manage four hits, allowing the Tigers to score four runs on nine hits. All of LSU's runs came on extra-base hits. Kelly Glass went 1-3 while Brooke Chaffe and Tiffany Chambers both smacked doubles. Hayley Punter (1-2) picked up her second loss of the year. The Lobos split again in day three action at the NFCA Leadoff Classic. UNM defeated Boston, 1-0 in the morning game but then lost to Missouri 4-0. In the first game, the Lobos pitching and defense helped them in the shutout of Boston University. The Lobos scored their lone run in the third inning of a squeeze play. UNM would have four hits while allowing Boston to have five. Amy Dumas picked up the win and she is now 3-2 on the year. In the semifinals of the consolation bronze bracket the Lobos were unable to capitalize on their earlier victory as they fell to Missouri, 4-0. Amy Dumas was again the pitcher of record as she evened her record at 3-3. On the second day the Lobos started the day off by losing to eventual NFCA Leadoff champion, #9 Nebraska, 6-0. UNM was only able to manage one hit off the Huskers pitchers while also having two errors. In game two the Lobos matched up with an opponent they know very well. UNM had to go all the way to Georgia to see a Mountain West Conference opponent as UNM and Utah squared off. The Utes were able to come back from a 3-1 deficit to defeat the Lobos 5-3. UNM got on the board first as Brooke Chaffee and Michelle Carter hit back-to-back home runs. Hayley Punter got the loss. TEXAS TECH RECAP: The University of New Mexico softball team was swept in its doubleheader with Texas Tech University. New Mexico (4-9-1) dropped the first game 6-2 and was edged 2-1 by Tech (10-14) in the second game of the day. Pitching and defense took center stage in the second game of the afternoon as both teams struggled to mount an offensive attack. However, Texas Tech finally broke through in the top of the fourth inning as the first four batters reached against Lobo starter Hayley Punter. Two batters later, the bases were loaded once again with one out, but Punter fanned rightfielder Tiffany Harrington and threw out designated player Tracy Cartier on a come-backer to the mound to escape further damage. New Mexico received a spark from an unlikely source in the bottom of the fifth when third baseman Sabrina Sandberg ripped a pitch over the centerfield fence for a solo homerun on her first hit of the season. The sophomore had been 0 for her last 18 prior to that at bat. Teammate Cassie Chavez then followed with a well-hit single. However, a freshman reliever for Tech quickly snuffed out the Lobo rally, inducing Kelly Glass to ground out to the shortstop on a close play at first before striking out second baseman Brooke Chaffee and catcher Tiffany Chambers. Punter dropped to 2-4 on the year, despite striking out seven and allowing just one earned run on five hits in seven innings. The first game of the day began much like the last, with as the two teams combined for just 9 hits through five innings. Chaffee gave the Lobos an early 1-0 lead with her second homerun of the year, a one out shot to left-centerfield in the bottom Inning by Inning Summary 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th 9th Extra Total New Mexico Opponents

6 of the first. The Red Raiders eventually got to Lobo starter Amy Dumas in the top of the fifth inning when the centerfielder reached on a bunt and Dumas throwing error allowed a run to score from second. After UNM was unable to take advantage of a two-on, one out situation in the bottom of the fifth, the Texas Tech bats came alive in the sixth. Dumas fanned one before giving up back-to-back singles. Relief pitcher Lauren McCoy fared no better as the next batter ripped a single to left, which was misplayed by UNM leftfielder Cayley Warmer, allowing two runs to score. After an infield single by the catcher, Tech s rightfielder layed down a bunt to plate the third run of the inning and give the Red Raiders a 4-1 lead. UNM added a run in the bottom of the fifth as Chavez scored on McCoy s ground out to the shortstop, but Texas Tech put the game away with a pair of runs in the seventh. Though she took her fourth loss of the season, Dumas (2-4) pitched well, allowing just one earned run on seven hits, while striking out three. Glass had a solid afternoon at the plate for New Mexico, going 4-8 and recording three stolen bases, while Chavez finished 3-7 on the day with a run-scored. On the second day the Lobos jumped out to an early lead, taking advantage of three Texas Tech University errors, then rode a strong pitching performance from sophomore Hayley Punter for a 7-2 victory over the Red Raiders on Wednesday afternoon at Lobo Field in Albuquerque. Junior centerfielder Kelly Glass went 3-4 at the plate and drove in a pair of runs in the Lobos three-run second inning, propelling New Mexico (5-9-1) to its first home victory of the season and first win in four games. Texas Tech dropped to on the year after taking the first two games of the series in Tuesday s doubleheader. After Texas Tech stranded four runners on base in the first two innings, New Mexico took advantage with a big second inning burst. Senior leftfielder Cayley Warner sliced a one out double off the first base bag and advanced to third when the Red Raiders missed the tag at first base on freshman Lauren McCoy s slow, rolling grounder to second. The Tech shortstop then dropped UNM senior catcher Tiffany Chamber s potential double play ball up the middle, allowing Warner to score and all other runners to remain safe. Freshman shortstop Kristal Mejia followed with a well-hit single to left, loading the bases for Glass. Glass, who had been 0-1 with the bases loaded this season, promptly ripped a single past the Red Raider first baseman, driving in McCoy and Chambers. The Lobos had a chance to pad the lead when sophomore designated player Sabrina Sandberg reached on a fielder s choice, but Mejia and glass were each thrown out attempting to advance. Back-to-back doubles by senior second baseman Brooke Chaffee and Warner gave UNM a 4-0 lead after four innings, before the team piled on three more runs on two hits in the bottom of the sixth. The Lobo offense provided more than enough support for Punter, who limited Texas Tech to just one hit after the second inning before giving up a two-out, two-rbi double in the top of the seventh inning. The Victoria, Australia native improved to 3-4 on the season, allowing two runs on eight hits, while striking out a pair in her team-high fifth complete game of the year. Maggie Ayres (1-3) was saddled with the loss for the Red Raiders, allowing three earned runs on eight hits in three-and-one third innings of work. Tech reliever Amie Stines gave up one earned run on a pair of hits, while striking out three.
