Central and six games over Toronto for the best record in the league...detroit jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, as Edinson Volquez needed 38 pitches to record his first three outs...tigers starter Matt Boyd also needed 38 tosses to navigate his first inning and KC cut the deficit to the Royals then plated four in the second, two more in the fourth, a single tally in the sixth and capped the night with a 6-run seventh to plate 15 runs for the first time since a 16-8 win on July 3, 2011 in Denver...offensive heroes were aplenty, with Kendrys Morales leading the charge with four his and four RBI, upping his season total to 98, while Ben Zobrist contributed four hits from the leadoff spot, stepping in for one night in pace of Alcides Escobar... Lorenzo Cain chipped in with two hits, including a 3-run homer, to extend his career best hitting streak to 11 games...by securing an 82nd win, this 2015 club is assured of being the first-ever in franchise history to never see the.500 mark or below and clinched a third straight winning record for the first time since KC ON THE OFFENSIVE--With 12 runs on Wednesday and then 15 last night, the Royals have plated at least a dozen in back-to-back contests since May 18-19, 1999, when KC scored 13 and 14 in consecutive games vs. Oakland...this also marks the first time the club has reached double-digits in consecutive games since June 6-7, 2014 vs. Detroit (11 in each). TWO OUTS???, NO PROBLEM--The Royals continue to lead the Majors in two-out hitting with a.281 mark, which is 37 points better than the big league average (.244)...KC is slugging at a 436 clip, third best in the Majors, while leading the bigs with runners in scoring position and two away at kc has plated 250 two-out runs, third most in the A.L...a season ago in 2014, Kansas City hit just.236 in two-out situations with 219 total runs...the Royals boast three of the top six individual two-out hitters with Lorenzo Cain (.389) leading the league, followed by Kendrys Morales (.343) in fifth and Eric Hosmer (.333), who is sixth...morales (61), Hosmer (59) and Cain (58) rank third, fourth and fifth, respectively in two-out hits...morales, who is now second in the A.L. in overall RBI (98) has driven more than half of those in with two outs, leading the Majors with 51, shattering Joe Randa s (2000) previous club record of 46. ALL ABOARD!!!--The Cain Train is rolling along as the final month of the regular season takes shape...lorenzo Cain extended his career best hitting streak to 11 games with a 2-hit effort last night, while homering for a second straight game and scoring three times...during this streak, he s upped his season average from.306 to.315, good for seventh in the league...he has hit at a.395 clip (17-for-43) in the 11 games, with 11 runs scored, a double, two homers, 10 RBI and an OPS of THE K IS THE PLACE TO BE--The Royals are bearing down on their all-time single-season attendance record, upping the 2015 total to 2,292,286 with last night s gathering...kansas City has 12 home games remaining and is only 185,414 shy of the all-time record of 2,477,700 in KC has eclipsed the 30,000 mark 50 times this year, posting a ledger in those 30+ attended affairs, while going 13-5 in the 18 home sellouts this year...each game of this weekend series is pushing sellout status...kansas City blew past the 2,000,000 mark in season attendance in the 60th home date on August 14, marking the fastest that KC has eclipsed that milestone, three dates earlier than the 1989 campaign...this is the 13th time in franchise history that Kansas City has drawn at least two million, but the first time in 24 years (1991). TONIGHT S STARTING PITCHERS: LHP John Danks (6-12, 4.82) vs. RHP Kris Medlen (3-0, 3.51) Career Career John Danks vs. Royals Major League Record 6-12 (4.82 ERA) Kris Medlen vs. White Sox Major League Record 3-0 (3.51 ERA) KRIS MEDLEN makes his third start of the year and 10th overall appearance for Kansas City...it s his 162nd all-time outing and 64th start...he takes on the White Sox for the second time, making his first start...kris signed a two-year free-agent contract with KC on December 18, 2014 with a mutual option for the 2017 season, after missing all of 2014 following Tommy John surgery in spring training with Atlanta. ANOTHER W --Kris earned his second win in as many starts and third of the year last Saturday at The Trop, 6-3 over the Rays...he gave up three runs on four hits over 5.1 innings, all three coming across in the fourth inning that gave Tampa Bay a short-lived 3-2 lead...kc rallied for two in the top of the fifth and Kris retired four of the final six hitters and wound up with the win...dating back to his time with Atlanta, Medlen is 11-1 with a 2.40 ERA over his last 13 starts. AMONG THE BEST WHEN HEALTHY--Despite missing a couple of long stretches during his Major League career, Kris has posted numbers comparable to the best pitchers in the bigs when he s been on the mound...dating back to the 2012 All-Star break, Kris has a 2.51 ERA, which is the fifth-lowest among pitchers who have worked at least innings in that span...among that group, he also ranks 15th in WHIP (1.09) and 23rd in opponents batting average (.235). THE LONG ROAD BACK--Kris is making his third start and 10th appearance, since suffering an elbow injury in the spring of 2014 with the Braves...he underwent a second Tommy John surgery on March 19, 2014, missing the entire season as well as the first three-plus months of this year...medlen made his return to the Majors with KC on July 20, tossing 3.1 innings vs. Pittsburgh...he earned his first victory August 18 tossing a scoreless frame in Cincinnati in a 3-1 triumph. ODDITY--Medlen has allowed just two hits with two outs this season as opponents are batting.074 (2-for-27) when down to their final out...however, both two-out hits have left the ballpark as four of the 10 runs he s allowed this season have come with two down...he s allowed a.265 average (17-for-64) with less than two outs. SEPTEMBER STAR--Kris has been an outstanding second-half pitcher in his career, saving his best for the last full month of the regular season...in 21 career outings (11 starts) in September, the righty is 8-1 with a 1.60 ERA (16 ER in 90.0 IP), with 15 walks and 87 strikeouts...his September ERA since 2009 is tops in the Majors among pitchers that have worked at least 90.0 innings, while his.198 opponents average (64-for-324) ranks fifth. VS. CHISOX--Medlen makes his first start and second appearance against the White Sox, previously tossing 3.2 scorelesss innings in relief on August 9 of this year...in that outing, he retired 11 of the 12 hitters he faced, allowing only a walk to Adam Eaton...he s 4-1 with a 2.81 ERA in nine career outings vs. A.L. Central clubs.
