The four-game series will open on Friday, April 9 with a 6 p.m. game, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, April 10 beginning at 1 p.m. and will conclude on Saturday, April 11 one game at 12 p.m. A Look At The Tigers FHSU is 21-9 overall with a 14-8 conference mark, which is good enough for fourth in the MIAA. The Tigers have played 10 conference road games over the past two weeks, going 6-4 in that stretch. This will be the first home conference action for the Tigers since March 14. FHSU has played well on its home field this year, posting a home record of Offensively, the Tigers are led by Kyle Stacken who leads the team and the conference with 13 home runs. Stacken is also the team leader with 38 RBI and 43 hits on the year. As a team, FHSU has belted 41 HRs which is tied for second in the MIAA. On the mound, Matt Augustine leads the Tigers with a 4-1 record and sports a 2.83 ERA in 41.1 innings pitched. Mat Atkinson has fared well out of the Tiger bullpen, leading the team and MIAA with six saves on the year with a 2.96 ERA. Opponents are batting.322 against the Tigers this season. The Series UNO and FHSU have played 20 games against each other all time. The Mavericks are 11-9 against the Tigers. Since joining the MIAA last season, UNO is 2-2 against FHSU. The 1972 graduate of UNO was a 1971 NAIA All-American for the Mavericks. He is (.632) all-time as a college head coach. The Maverick skipper picked up his 350th career win against on March 7 with a 9-8 win over Missouri Southern State. Herold is assisted by Chris Gadsden (11th Season) and Dan McGinn (10th Season). Rick Sabath is in his fourth year as head coach of the Fort Hays State University baseball program. He brings an overall record at FHSU of into the 2010 season. What s On Tap? The Mavericks will continue their conference road trip when they head to Topeka, Kan., to take on Washburn in a four-game series. The two teams will play doubleheaders on Saturday, April 17 and Sunday, April 18 at Falley Field. 2 No. 25 Mavs Sweep Griffons The No. 25 University of Nebraska at Omaha baseball team came from behind in both games of a doubleheader against MIAA rival Missouri Western State on April 7 to earn the sweep of the two-game series. UNO won the first game 12-3 and took the second by a score of 3-2. The Mavericks trailed 3-1 heading into the top of the fifth inning until their bats got hot, scattering eight hits in the inning which helped UNO climb to a 10-3 lead. Short stop Jeremy Klein launched his first home run of the season, a three-run shot to right center. Tyler Lundy started the scoring with a two-run double down the left field line. Freshman Tyler Splichal hit his 17th double of the season - his fifth straight game with a double. The Bellevue, Neb., native had three hits in the game, which also marked his fifth straight game with three hits. UNO would add two more in the seventh led by a Lundy RBI single to secure the win in the opening game. The Mavs tallied 16 hits in the game. Maverick southpaw Adam Versendaal (1-0) was credited with his first win of the season in relief duty. He pitched 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit while striking out a season-high four batters and issued one walk. In the nightcap, UNO plated two runs in the top of the seventh to rally from a 2-1 deficit. Brady Hohl singled to score Tim Urban for the game winning run. Zach Croonquist (2-2) got the win in relief. He pitched one scoreless inning, allowing one hit and striking out one batter. Colby McCord tossed two scoreless innings and didn t surrender any hits to the Griffons to record his second save of the season. He got into trouble by walking to batters in the bottom of the ninth, but struck out two to earn the save. UNO Baseball By The Numbers.354 UNO s team batting average which currently leads the MIAA..956 UNO s team fielding percentage which ranks fifth in the league. 364 Wins Maverick skipper Bob Herold has tallied at UNO in his 11th year with the program. 9 Times that Jake Benne and Andrew Hansen have been hit by pitches this season, which leads the team and is second in the MIAA. Hansen has been hit four times in his last six games. 237 Runners UNO has left on base this season. Opponents have left 216 on base against the Mavs this year. 4 Sac flies UNO lead off hitter Ryan Hook has this season, which is tied for the most in the MIAA. 61 Extra base hits (41 doubles, 2 triples and 18 HRs) the UNO pitching staff has allowed on the year. Only Central Missouri (51) and Washburn (54) have allowed less in the conference. Holtmeyer Leads All of NCAA Baseball In Ks Sophomore right-hander Joe Holtmeyer has been a strike out machine in his past three outings. He fanned a career-high 16 Truman batters in his complete game onehit shut out on March 22 and followed it up with a complete game, 13 strike out showing against Emporia State on March 28 in UNO s 2-1 win over the Hornets. He continued where he left off against Southwest Baptist on April 2 when he fanned 15 more batters to help collect his third straight complete game and second one-hit shutout of the season. In his last three games, Holtmeyer has struck out 44 batters while improving his record to 5-1 and lowering his ERA to 1.70 in 47.2 innings pitched. In the latest statistics compiled by NCAA.com on April 4, Holtmeyer was tops in all of NCAA college baseball (DI, DII and DIII) with his 89 Ks and strike outs per nine innings. His 4.15 hits allowed per game ranks second in Division II. He has four complete games this season, two of which are one-hitters. His win against SBU on April 2 was the fifth game of the year Holtmeyer has recorded double-digit strikeouts. It was his fourth game with 13 or more in a game this year. Holtmeyer currently ranks seventh on UNO s single-season all-time list with 89 strikeouts, two behind Mike Metz (1977). Barry Miller owns the all-time mark of 112 strikeouts in a season, which he reached in Lundy Leads Team In Hits, RBI, Triples and HR Senior transfer Tyler Lundy leads the team with 48 hits on the year, which ranks second in the MIAA. The Minot, N.D., native has drove in a team-high 35 runs this season. His three triples lead the team and are tied for the league lead. Lundy has belted five home runs which is tops on the team. On April 2 against Southwest Baptist, Lundy doubled and launched a home run in the same inning in UNO s 20-8 win. Freshman Splichal Making an Impact UNO true freshman infielder Tyler Splichal has been a great addition to the Maverick lineup. The Bellevue, Neb., native leads the team with a.443 batting average and 17 doubles. His 17 doubles are currently tied for fourth in Division II. Splichal is batting.577 in his last six games with 15 hits and seven doubles. He has 11 three-hit games on the year and has struck out just five times in 106 at-bats. Hansen Getting On and Scoring Runs Senior second baseman Andrew Hansen has reached base safely in his last nine games. Whether it by hit, walk or getting hit by a pitch, Hansen has gotten on base, which has allowed him to score 11 runs in his last eight games. The Lakeville, Minn., native leads the team with 32 runs scored on the year. He is hitting.353 with 13 doubles and 23 RBI while starting all 30 games. Mavs Ranked Nationally The UNO baseball team is currently ranked No. 25 in the latest Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II poll, which was released on April 5. The Mavs moved up one spot from their previous No. 26 ranking. Other MIAA schools ranked in the poll are Central Missouri who sits near the top at No. 2, and Emporia State which is tied for ninth with Francis Marion. The Mavs fell out of latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers poll released on April 6, but are still receiving votes in the poll. UCM is second in the poll while ESU is No. 11. In the latest Ping!Baseball rankings, UNO is No. 27, up two spots from its previous No. 29 ranking last week. UCM is third in the poll and ESU is No. 11. Southern Arkansas sits atop all three polls with a 32-3 record. Preseason MIAA Poll The UNO baseball team was selected as preseason No. 3 in the 2010 MIAA Baseball Coaches Poll with 80 points, the conference office announced on Jan. 29. UNO won the MIAA Tournament Championship last season. The Mavericks made it to the South Central Regional also and fell to Central Missouri in the elimination round. Two-time defending MIAA Champion and 2009 NCAA Division II National Runner-up Emporia State was selected as preseason No. 1. The Hornets received nine of 11 first place votes and totaled 99 points. Central Missouri collected the other two first-place votes and was voted No. 2 in the coaches poll with a total of 91 points. Missouri Southern was selected No. 4 with 71 points, and Missouri Western followed in fifth place with 62 points. Fort Hays State was voted sixth with 56 points, followed by Northwest Missouri in seventh with 47 points, Washburn eighth with 40 points, Pittsburg State ninth with 30 points, Southwest Baptist 10th with 18 points and Truman 11th with 11 points. 4 Bob Herold Head Coach present 11th Season at UNO ( /.632) Bachelor s: Nebraska-Omaha, 1972 Master s: Nebraska-Omaha, Straight trips to the NCAA tournament College World Series Advanced to College World Series in North Central Conference Championships Bob Herold begins his 11th season as the head coach of the Mavericks. Herold has compiled a record at UNO. He became the third head coach in the 59-year history of UNO baseball in June 1999, when he replaced the retiring Bob Gates. Herold guided the Mavericks to their firstever NCAA II College World Series appearance in 2007, as UNO peaked at the end of the season, defeating the top three teams in the NCAA II Central Region to claim the regional title with a perfect 4-0 record in the tournament. Herold has led the Mavericks to five consecutive NCAA II Tournament appearances and six overall. Last season, Herold led the Mavs won their first MIAA title, defeating Emporia State and then Central Missouri 12-9 in the championship game to earn an automatic bid into the tournament. In 2002, Herold earned NCC Coach of the Year honors, guiding the Mavericks to their first NCAA II Regional since 1981, posting a record. Herold also earned NCC Coach of the Year honors in 2005 and 2008 when UNO claimed the NCC Tournament and regular season Bob Herold s Coaching Honors 2002 North Central Conference Coach of the Year 2005 North Central Conference Coach of the Year 2008 North Central Conference Coach of the Year titles both seasons. Herold guided UNO to a school-record 45 victories in 2006 and again in 2008 as the Mavericks advanced to the NCAA II Regionals both years. Herold, a native Omahan, is no stranger to Nebraska- Omaha. He was a 1971 NAIA All-American during his playing days under Coach Virgil Yelkin and served as an assistant coach for the Mavericks under both Yelkin and Gates, from He earned both his bachelor of general studies (1972) and his master of science (1976) degrees from UNO. Herold played seven professional seasons in the Kansas City Royals organization, the Mexican Leagues and in Columbia, South America. In addition to his UNO coaching experience, he also served as an assistant coach at the University of Louisville in 1974 and at Creighton University from Herold also spent time in the Kansas City Royals organization. He managed eight seasons in the Royals farm system and led Royals affiliates to league championships. In 1999 he was the the hitting coach for the Omaha Golden Spikes, the Royals Class AAA Pacific Coast League affiliate. Herold and his wife Sondra have three children, daughters Haley, Kiley and son Riley.
