1 BOSTON RED SOX (58-74) at TORONTO BLUE JAYS (66-66) Wednesday, August 27, :07 p.m. ET Rogers Centre, Toronto, ON RHP Joe Kelly (0-1, 4.09) vs. RHP Marcus Stroman (7-5, 4.11) Game #133 Road Game #64 TV: NESN Radio: WEEI 93.7 FM, WCEC 1490 AM (Spanish) EXTRAS AGAIN: The Red Sox beat the Blue Jays last night, 11-7 in 11 innings at Rogers Center...It came one night after defeating the Jays 4-3 in 10 innings to open the series. The Red Sox have won back-to-back games, both on the road in extra innings, for the 1st time since 1986, when they took 9-6 and 4-2 decisions on 5/9 and 5/10, both in 10 innings at OAK (Elias Sports Bureau). FREE FRAMES: Boston sent 10 batters to the plate and scored 7 runs to take the deciding lead in the 11th inning last night...it matched the club s most runs in any frame this season for the 2nd time, also the 6th on 8/14 vs. HOU. Elias says the Red Sox had not scored as many as 7 runs in an inning as late as the 11th since matching that feat with 7 runs in the 11th on 6/4/82 at CAL. Boston was the 1st ML team to score 7+ runs in a single extra inning since the Twins scored 7 in the 10th to win 10-3 on 7/23/13 at LAA. SEEKING SWEEP: A win today would give Boston its 8th sweep of the season, 3rd on the road, and 1st in a road series of at least 3 games since 5/17-19/13 at MIN (3-0). SOX STATUS: The Sox have won back-to-back contests for the 1st time since a 4-game win streak from 8/ The 2 straight wins come after an 8-game losing streak from 8/17-24, the club s 2nd-longest drought of the year behind a season-high 10-game slide, 5/ The club is 16 games under.500 and a season-high 18.0 games back in the division for a 6th straight day...the Sox are 6.0 games behind 4th place. ON THE ROAD AGAIN: Boston continues a 10-game, 11- day road trip tonight with the last of 3 games in Toronto (2-0 thus far)...this is the team s 2nd-to-last road trip of the year...they visit KC (4G), PIT (3G), BAL (3G) from 9/ The Sox only have 12 home games remaining, with 3 each against all 4 division rivals. FACING EAST: Of Boston s last 32 games starting yesterday, 25 are against division rivals (78%)...Thus far, Boston is 2-0 in that stretch...the club s only remaining non-division foes are KC (4G) and PIT (3G) to open the last road trip. RUNNING REVERSAL: The Red Sox have been successful in their last 10 stolen base attempts, the club s longest streak in Boston has swiped at least one bag in 4 straight games, with 8 total stolen bases in that time (0 CS). Boston has been caught stealing just once in the team s last 19 attempts beginning 7/12...In fact, the Sox own the best SB rate in the majors since the All- Star break at 94% (17 of 18) after posting a major league-worst 60% rate (30 of 50) before the break. OVERTIME: All 24 Red Sox games this August have been at least 3 hours long...the last that clocked in under the 3-hour mark was 7/30 vs. TOR (2:48). STILL SLUGGING: David Ortiz ranks 4th in the AL with 30 homers, 4 shy of the MLB lead and tied for the most among ML left-handed hitters (also CHC s Anthony Rizzo)...This is Ortiz s 8th career 30-HR season, all since joining the Red Sox in 2003, which ties Ted Williams for the franchise mark. With 93 RBI, he is 1 shy of the AL lead...ortiz is closing in on his 8th career 30-HR/100-RBI season, which would pass Ted Williams (7) for the franchise record. DAVID ROLLING: David Ortiz has been on base at least twice in his last 6 games played, reaching safely in 20 of 26 PA during that stretch (77%, 11 H, 8 BB, HBP)...He has a.554 OBP over a 12-game on-base streak beginning on 8/9 (.442 AVG, 19-for-43, 4 2B, 4 HR, 11 RBI, 11 BB, HBP). During this stretch, he has raised his season AVG from.246 to.265 and his OBP from.339 to.362. SOX AND JAYS: Tonight the Red Sox play their last game in Toronto this season...boston is 5-10 this season against the Jays, with 2 straight wins after a 6-game losing streak against Toronto that tied the Sox longest ever in a season. Boston s 304 all-time wins over the Jays rank 2nd only to the Yankees (310)...Since the Jays 1st season in 1977, Boston only has more wins against BAL (309). ROGERS NEIGHBORHOOD: All 5 of the Red Sox wins over the Jays this year have come in 8 games at Rogers Centre, where the Red Sox have outscored the Blue Jays The Sox have lost their first 6 Fenway Park matchups with the Jays thus far in 2014 for the 1st time since the 1989 squad lost all 6 home games against TOR. The Red Sox lead all visitors with 111 all-time wins at Rogers Centre (NYY is 2nd at 99). David Ortiz leads all visitors at Rogers Center with 37 home runs, his 2nd-most at any ballpark after Fenway (187)...Ortiz s 96 RBI here rank 2nd among visitors at the ballpark, 1 shy of Alex Rodriguez (97). AIR CANADA: The Red Sox scored 11 runs in last night s win, the club s largest output since setting a season-high in a 14-1 win on 7/21, also in Toronto. Boston has scored 52 runs here in 9 games this season for an average of 5.8 runs per game compared to its 3.9 runs per game average overall this season. DIFFERENCE MAKER: Yoenis Cespedes has driven in a team-leading 20 of Boston s 94 runs scored (21%) since joining the team on 8/2 (T-7th in AL)...He has the gamewinning RBI in 3 of the club s 9 wins since his debut. His 8 go-ahead RBI with Boston rank T-2nd in MLB since his Sox debut behind only Evan Longoria (8). All 4 of Cespedes s homers as a Red Sox have given the team a lead...in MLB only KC s Alex Gordon (5) has more go-ahead homers since 8/1. ON THE OFFENSE: The Red Sox rank last in the AL overall with both 510 runs scored and 3.86 runs per game. Boston is (.622) when tallying at least 10 hits, and (.662) record when scoring at least 4 runs. CLOSE CALLS: Boston has played an AL-high 49 one-run games this year (25-24), 3 shy of Miami s MLB-leading 52 and 7 more than the Sox played in all of 2013 (42, 21-21)... They are tied with BAL for the AL lead with 25 one-run wins. Boston is on pace for 60, 1-run games...it would break the club record of 59 one-run games in 1961 (32-27). CATCHING ON: With Boston this year, Christian Vazquez has thrown out 9 of 20 attempted base stealers (45%), the 2nd-best rate among major leaguers with 20+ games at catcher (STL s Yadier Molina, 47%). In his 32 games at catcher, Vazquez has 3 pickoffs... According to Elias, it is the most pickoffs by a Red Sox catcher since Rich Gedman picked off 4 in RUSNEY ABOARD: On Saturday Boston signed OF Rusney (roos-nay) Castillo, 27, to a 7-year major league contract from The 5-year veteran of Cuba s Serie Nacional was optioned to the Rookie-level GCL Red Sox and will resume baseball activities in Fort Myers, FL.
