5 CALIFORNIA senior Alex Sutton has been named the Pac-10 Softball Player of the Week for Apr. 3-9, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today. ARIZONA junior Taryne Mowatt has been named the Pac-10 Softball Pitcher of the Week for Apr. 3-9, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today. Mowatt threw two of the most effective outings in the Pac-10 this season in back-to-back shutouts of rival No. 7/9 Arizona State this past weekend. The Wildcats rode the arm of their ace to a pair of 1-0 shutout victories that moved the defending NCAA champs to a league-leading 4-1 Conference record. In Friday s series opener, Mowatt tossed a no-hitter, her second of the season and fourth of her career. She took a perfect game into the sixth inning, when it was broken up by an Arizona throwing error. The only baserunner Mowatt would allow of her own accord was a seventh-inning walk. She struck out 11 Sun Devils in the contest. In Saturday s outing, which aired live to a national television audience on ESPN2, Mowatt backed up Friday s gem with a two-hit shutout in which she walked none and struck out 10. Mowatt s string of 10 hitless innings was finally broken in the 4th inning on Saturday, but no damage was done and Mowatt surrendered just one single the rest of the way in picking up her Pac-10-leading 21st win of the season. For the week, Mowatt pitched 14 innings of shutout softball, allowing just the two hits and one walk, and striking out 21. She held ASU to a.045 batting average when it came into the series hitting.306. Mowatt, a native of Corona, Calif., has pitched every inning of the Wildcats five Pac-10 games, and is second in Conference play with an ERA of 0.82, while holding Pac-10 opponents to a.104 average that ranks No. 1 in the league. This is Mowatt s fifth career Pitcher of the Week honor, tying her for third-most among active players. She also earned the award on Mar. 20 of this seaosn. It is the 105th Player/ Pitcher of the Week award all-time for Arizona. ALSO NOMINATED: Katie Burkhart, ASU; Lauren Frankiewicz, CAL; Missy Penna, STAN. Sutton came up big at the plate for the Golden Bears last week, as Cal won two out of three games from No. 14/10 Stanford to break out of a six-game losing streak that had threatened to derail their season. Cal earned a 3-0 road win against the Cardinal, then won the series finale at home, with Sutton homering in each win. Thursday s series opener was scoreless through four innings when Sutton came to the plate in the fifth and lauched a three-run home run that would prove to be all the scoring on the day. The win was Cal s first in Pac-10 play and snapped a six-game slide. In the rubber game of the set, Sutton hit her team-leading ninth home run as part of a fiverun second inning and Cal powered to a 9-1 win that ended in six innings. Sutton added another hit and a run in the match-up. Overall, Sutton hit.417 (5-for-12) with three runs scored, two home runs and five RBI. Sutton, Cal s lead-off hitter, leads the Golden Bears in doubles (10), home runs (9), RBI (38), on-base percentage (.478), slugging percentage (.611), and total bases (80). Her nine homers are tied for fourth-most in the Pac-10 and her RBI total ranks her sixth. California (25-20, 2-4 Pac-10) faces a tough road trip this week, playing at No. 10 Arizona State on Friday, and at No. 4 Arizona on Saturday and Sunday. This is the first Player of the Week honor for Sutton, who was a second team All-Pac-10 selection last season. It is the 59th Player/Pitcher of the Week all-time for California. ALSO NOMINATED: Caitlin Lowe, ARIZ; Kaitlin Cochran, ASU; Suzie Barnes, ORE; Brianne McGowan, OSU; Alissa Haber, STAN; Krista Colburn, UCLA; Dena Tyson, WASH.
