Thur. Apr p.m. Utah USAFA Falcon Field Fri. Apr p.m. Utah USAFA Falcon Field Sat. Apr. 14 Noon Utah USAFA Falcon Field On the Air: The Air Force-Utah game on Saturday, April 14, will be broadcast locally in Colorado Springs on KUBL AM The pre-game show will go on the air at 11:45 and the first pitch at noon. Jay Ritchie, in his 12th season of broadcasting Air Force athletics, will do the playby-play. Capt. Mike Saks, a former Falcon player and assistant coach, will do the color commentary. Several other baseball games will be broadcast, but the schedule is not yet finalized. The games will not be available on the internet. Facing the Pros: For the fourth time in school history, the Air Force baseball team faced a professional baseball team. The Falcons played the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, the Triple A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, Tuesday, April 3, at Sky Sox Stadium in Colorado Springs. The teams played 10 innings with the Sky Sox winning the game, 8-2. AFA took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, but the Sky Sox scored three in the second, three in the sixth and two in the seventh for an 8-1 lead. AFA added a run in the ninth to make up the final score. The Falcons played the St. Louis Cardinals in 1971 and tied the big league club, 3-3. That Cardinals team featured Lou Brock and Joe Torre. In 1989, the Falcons played the Colorado Springs Sky Sox and lost, 8-5. The 1992 team played the Albuquerque Dukes, the Los Angeles Dodgers Triple A affiliate and lost, 6-0. Best Record Since...: Before the loss to SDSU, April 8, Air Force was overall to mark the latest the Falcons have been at or above.500 since The 1995 team concluded the season with a overall record. Since then, the latest Air Force had been at.500 or better was last season when the team was MWC Wins: Air Force has five MWC victories at the midway point of the conference season. With four of the five remaining league series at home, AFA could post the most conference victories in several years. The Falcons have not won more than eight conference games since the 1995 team was in the WAC. In fact, since Air Force joined the WAC in 1981, only five of the 21 Falcon teams have won more than eight league games. The 1989 team won 13, the 1982 team won 12, the 1984 Falcons won 11, the 1995 Falcons won 10 and the 1985 team won nine. Tail Feathers: Infielder Bowie Frost has one of the most bizarre stats ever seen in baseball... His on-base percentage of.339 is lower than his batting average (.345)... The reason is that he has not walked or been hit by pitch and has three sacrifices that count as plate appearances... Tony Shockley continues to lead the Falcons in batting with a.395 average... Brian LaBasco leads the Falcons in MWC games with a.379 average... He is hitting.345 overall... Against SDSU last weekend, Don Rolleg hit.600 (3-for-5)... Mike Thiessen hit.364 (4-for-11) while Brad Bashore hit AFA hit only.257 in the three games against the Aztecs with a.929 fielding percentage and an 8.67 team ERA... In the last eight games, Brad Bashore is batting.381, while Mike Thiessen is hitting.371 and Brian LaBasco is hitting.309. About the Utes: BYU swept Utah last weekend in a three-game MWC series in Salt Lake City. The Utes enter the Air Force series overall and 6-9 and tied for fourth in the MWC. The Utes have lost six straight to BYU and SDSU and have lost nine of the last 12 starting with a 10-6 loss to Air Force, March 18. Centerfielder Sam Swenson leads the team with a.380 batting average and 37 runs scored. The Utes have a.517 slugging percentage and have hit 54 home runs in 36 games. The team is also fielding.953, one of the best marks in the conference. The pitching staff has an ERA of 6.25 with two quality starters in Travis Palmer (3-3, 4.92) and Ryan Bailey (5-3, 6.63).

The Falcons host 13 straight home games from March 30 to April 22. The home stand began with a three-game series against New Mexico, Mar. 30 to Apr. 1. The Falcons played three games against San Diego State, three games against Utah, a single game against Metro State and a three-game set against UNLV (Apr. 20 to Apr. 22). Series Records: Air Force and Utah have played 96 times with the Utes holding a advantage in the series that began in Earlier this season, Utah took two of three games from the Falcons in Salt Lake City. Utah has had a slight advantage in the series recently. In the last three years, Utah has won 10 of the 17 games. Over the last three years, Utah is 5-2 at Falcon Field. The Utes took two of three last season, won the only game played at AFA in 1999 and won two of three in Earlier this season vs. the Utes: Air Force won one of three games from Utah in a three-game conference series, Mar , in Salt Lake City. Utah swept a doubleheader from the Falcons by scores of 12-2 and In the first game, Utah hammered 20 hits in the 12-2 win over Air Force. Utah s Jason Hawes hit his second home run of the game, a solo shot in the fourth to make the score 5-2. Utah put the game away with six runs on seven hits in the bottom of the eighth. Utah s Ryan Bailey pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on 10 hits with nine strikeouts. Utah scored five runs in the first inning of the second game and cruised to a 14-4 win. The Utes scored four runs on three Falcon errors in the fourth inning and added two more in the eighth. The Falcons committed six errors in the game, allowing nine unearned runs. Air Force broke an eightgame losing streak with a 10-6 victory in the series finale. Air Force jumped out to a 5-0 lead with three runs in the second inning and two more in the fourth. The Falcons took a 6-3 lead in the top of the seventh as sophomore outfielder Josh Phifer hit a solo home run to left field. Falcon starter Mike Tufte cruised through the first five innings, allowing only one run on two hits with four strikeouts. He only gave up three runs on three hits through the first seven innings. Price Paramore went 3-for-4 in the game while Brad Bashore went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Tufte earned his fifth win of the season as he went 7.1 innings and gave up five runs, three earned, on four hits. Runs Record Falls: Senior outfielder Mike Thiessen added another record to his resume as he broke Mike Kazlausky s record for career runs scored. Thiessen doubled and scored in the top of the ninth of the win over BYU, March 23, to break the record that was set in Thiessen s Assault of the Record Book: Thiessen placed his name at the top of four AFA career records earlier this season. He broke school record for hits (currently at 274), walks (133) and atbats (730) at the Service Academies Classic in Millington, Tenn. He broke the school record for runs scored (currently at 226) against BYU, March 23. Last season, he broke the school records for hitting streak (33), doubles in a season (28), doubles in a career (currently at 70), hits in a season (91) and at-bats in a season (220). Thiessen is within reach of several more career records: Runs Scored 1. Mike Thiessen, 1998-present Mike Kazlausky, Total Bases 1. Vern Mullis, Mike Thiessen, 1998-present 453 Stolen Bases 1. Jim Best, John Johnson, Mike Kazlausky, Eric Pharris, Mike Thiessen, 1998-present 40 Most Games Played 1. Mike Kazlausky, Troy Simon, Mike Thiessen, 1998-present Vern Mullis, Home Runs 1. Steve Saleck, Glenn Harris, Vern Mullis, T6. Mike White, T6. Justin Collins, T8. Mike Thiessen, 1998-present 31 About the Conference: Air Force is in its second season in the Mountain West Conference. The Falcons face Brigham Young, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV and Utah. The teams play a three-game series at each site for 30 conference games. Colorado State and Wyoming do not have baseball programs. New Mexico won the inaugural regular season championship last season while SDSU won the tournament championship. AFA placed sixth in the regular season and second in the tournament. The 2001 MWC Baseball Championship Tournament will be hosted by San Diego State University in San Diego, Calif. All six Mountain West Conference teams will compete in the double-elimination tournament May Seedings will be decided by regular-season results in conference games.

3 Air Force Baseball 2001 Page 3 Rare Triple Play: Air Force turned a rare, and bizarre, triple play against New Mexico, Mar. 31. Lobo Mark Okano lined out to AFA shortstop Nelson Prouty. Prouty then ran to second base to tag out Donny Sevieri who dove back to the bag. Prouty threw the ball back to pitcher Johnny Koegel and the play seemed to be over. However, Lobo Matt Alexander, who was on first base, broke for second. Koegel threw the ball back to Prouty who tagged Alexander for the rare 616 triple play. Preseason All-American: Senior outfielder Mike Thiessen, who became the sixth player in AFA history to earn All-American honors (third-team baseball writers in 2000), was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America preseason All-American second team for New Triples Record: Air Force set a school record with six triples in the season opener against Hastings College, Jan. 26. Gerremy Goldsberry and Derck Kasel each had two while Bowie Frost and Nelson Prouty added one apiece. The six triples broke the record of five set against Colorado College in The Falcons have 20 three-baggers season compared to five all of last season. The Coach: Reed Peters (UNLV, 1992) is in his second season as the Falcons head coach and his third season overall with Air Force. He came to the Academy as an assistant coach in the fall of His career and Air Force record is His first career victory came against Iowa State, Feb. 6, Peters coaching career began at his alma mater, UNLV, where he was an assistant coach from The Denver native was the head coach at Colby Community College (Kansas) from He led the Trojans to a record for a.600 winning percentage. He led the team to a regional championship and two regional runner-up finishes. After serving as the acting head coach during the season, Peters was named the head coach May 17, Pitchers Climbing up Career Strikeout List: In the past 12 years, no Falcon pitcher has ranked among the top 10 in AFA career strikeouts. The Falcons currently have three pitchers who rank among the top 10. The starting rotation of Mike Tufte, Erik Fisher and Matt Kaercher can certainly make a case for being the best rotation in school history. 1. Bob Wright, Rich Haynie, Alan McClure, Mike Tufte, 1998-Present Erik Fisher, 1999-Present Pete Bracci, Jon Mosier, Bill Hornacek, Matt Kaercher, 1999-Present Wade Leatham, Double Trouble: Three Falcon baseball players are two-sport athletes at the Academy. Mike Thiessen and Brian LaBasco also play football while Josh Wallace plays basketball. Thiessen is the most recognizable name on the list. The Falcons starting centerfielder was also the starting quarterback for the football team this past fall. He was named the MWC co-offensive player of the year and was also named the offensive MVP in the Silicon Valley Classic bowl game. The senior from Modesto, Calif., broke school records for passing yards and touchdowns in the option era. He also led the team in rushing and rushing touchdowns. LaBasco was a wide receiver on the Falcon football team. The sophomore from Hollywood, Fla., was second on the team in receptions and third in yards. He led the Falcons in receiving yards at the bowl game. Wallace was a reserve center on the Falcon basketball team and is expected to pitch for the baseball team in the second half of the season. The 6-foot-9 Wallace opened eyes during fall practice with a live fastball. A fourth two-sport athlete, hockey player Brian Gornick, will not play baseball this season. A two-time all-conference selection in hockey, Gornick is having shoulder shoulder surgery this spring so that he will be at full strength for next hockey season. Gornick was an outfielder on the baseball team as a freshman and sophomore. Last Week: Air Force won one of three games from San Diego State last weekend in a three-game MWC series at Falcon Field. Saturday First Game: Air Force and San Diego State split a doubleheader Saturday, April 7. Air Force won the first game, 6-2, while SDSU won the second game, The first game was the completion of Friday's game, which was suspended due to rain and wind. The game resumed in the top of the third inning with no score. Air Force rode the strong pitching of junior Matt Kaercher to a 6-2 victory. Kaercher started the game on Friday and then continued to pitch Saturday. He went all nine innings and gave up just two runs on four hits with nine strikeouts and only one walk. SDSU's Sean Pierce hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth for a 1-0 lead. The Aztecs took a 2-0 lead in the top of the sixth, but then Kaercher retired 10 of the next 11 Aztecs in order. The Falcons scored one in the sixth, two in the seventh and three in the eighth. Mike Thiessen singled and scored in the sixth. The Aztecs made four errors in the final two innings, which led to three unearned runs. Brian LaBasco drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh and Don Rolleg scored on a passed ball for a 3-2 lead. In the ninth, Nick Liegl walked and scored on Rolleg's single to left field. Bowie Frost reached on a fielder's choice and scored on an Aztec error. Rolleg scored on LaBasco's double to right-center field. Saturday Second Game: SDSU scored 13 runs in the last three innings and cruised to a 19-1 win in the second game. Anthony Gwynn and Litteral had RBI singles in the fourth while Rielly Embry had a two-run single in the sixth for a 6-0 lead. The Falcons got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Thiessen doubled and scored on Frost's single to left field. In the seventh, the Aztecs had two doubles and a triple that led to four runs. AFA made two errors in the eighth that led to four runs. Aztec Ben Leuthard hit a three-run home run that keyed a five-run ninth inning. AFA starter Johnny Koegel, one of six Falcon pitchers used in the game, took the loss. Sunday: San Diego State scored six runs in the final two innings for a come-from-behind 9-5 win. The Aztecs took a 3-0 lead in the first inning and then AFA let a golden opportunity slip away in the bottom of the first as the Falcons had the bases loaded with no outs, but did not score a run. Mike Tufte then got into a groove and gave up just one hit over the next five innings. Meanwhile, the Falcons built a 5-3 lead. Brian LaBasco walked and scored on Don Rolleg's double in the third inning. AFA scored three in the fourth on three hits and an Aztec error. Nelson Prouty drove in Brad Bashore and Bowie Frost with a triple to right-center field. He scored on a throwing error by the Aztec catcher. SDSU scored four runs on two hits and three Falcon errors in the top of the eighth for a 7-5 lead.
