The Tigers opened in Louisiana for the second consecutive year; TSU played in the ULL Louisiana Classic and the LSU Tiger Classic in TSU (1-4) opened the 2016 season with a win over Mississippi Valley State at the Lion Classic in Hammond, La. before droping their final four games to Buffalo, Nicholls State and a pair to the host team, Southeastern Louisiana. Courtney Gearlds batted.364 highlighted by a bases clearing triple against MVSU; the junior reached base in four of the five games for a.500 batting average. Morgan Florey made the most of her four appearances recording 22 strikeouts in 12.1 innings of work, while finishing 1-0 with a 3.65 ERA. Rochelle Roberts produced a.438 (7-of-16) helping the ULM offense, while touching home plate seven times and led the team with eight stolen bases. Melanie Coyne was the workhorse last week working 21 innings, finishing 2-1 with 17 strikeouts and 2.33 ERA. Katlynn Kaminski served as a strong one-two punch as she picked up a win in a complete game shutout in her lone start.

The Tigers enter the season with 14 newcomers. The new additions include 11 freshmen and three transfers. A year ago, TSU brought in 11 new players. Reunited Sophomores Kasey Cox and Whitney Ennis are friends from Indiana and have transferred to TSU this season from separate institutions. Ennis spent her freshman campaign at IPFW. Cox came to TSU at the break from Indian River CC (Fla.). A Familiar Face Junior College transfer Lauren Woodard will make her Tiger debut two years after signing a National Letter of Intent to play for TSU in Woodard chose to go the junior college route after graduation and spent two seasons at Volunteer (Vol) State Tennessee State Softball Lauren Dreitlein and Taylor Green will begin their second season together at TSU after speanding a year together at Walters State CC as sophomores. Chelsea Buchanan played the 2015 season at TSU with former high school teammate Amber Galyon In 2016 Buchanan will be joined by former East Hickman High School teammates Abi Stephens and Maddy Clark. Let s Get it Started The Tigers claimed a 10-2 victory over Mississippi Valley State in the season opener to improve TSU s opening game record to 9-14 all-time in season. The first eight seasons in program history began with losses, but TSU is 9-6 over the last 15 years. TSU fell to Incarnate Word 3-2 in The Tigers previous opening game win came in 2014 with a 3-2 win over East Tennessee State. White Jerseys / Blue Pants Blue Jerseys / White Pants Camofluge Jerseys / White Pants HEAD COACH TOM OPDENBROUW SECOND SEASON SUNY ONEONTA, 1996 Tom Opdenbrouw was named the fifth head softball coach at Tennessee State in May Opdenbrouw has spent the last four seasons as the Director of Operations for the TSU football program. Prior to his stint with the Tigers, he served as an assistant softball coach for two seasons under Joyce Maudie. During his time as football s director of operations, Opdenbrouw also served as the an assistant softball coach at Ensworth High School and head coach at Nashville Christian School. Opdenbrouw came to TSU after holding the head coach position at perennial NAIA power, Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, Ky. Opdenbrouw left the Blue Raiders after posting over 200 wins. He guided LWC to three consecutive 30-plus win seasons over the last three years. Under his tutelage, the Blue Raiders won two Mid-South Conference Championships in addition to two runner-up finishes. LWC earned three bids to the Regional phase of the NAIA National Championships. Opdenbrouw s commitment to excellence on the field and in the classroom is evident in his coaching of 14 Regional All-Stars, 42 Mid- South Conference All-Stars, 10 Disney Academic All-Americans, and 67 MSC Conference All-Academic team members. Prior to his post with Lindsey Wilson, Opdenbrouw served as an assistant coach for the NCAA III SUNY Utica/ Rome softball team in Utica, N.Y. Opdenbrouw helped the Wildcats set their school record for wins. In addition to his coaching duties, he served as the recruiting coordinator for all women s sports and as the athletic academic coordinator for at-risk students. Opdenbrouw s first collegiate coaching experience was garnered at SUNY Oneonta in Oneonta, NY. He was an assistant for six years as the Red Dragons became one of the NCAA s most successful programs of the 1990 s. They won the NCAA National Statistical Award for double plays turned in a single season in 1994 as well as the school s first ever New York State Collegiate Championship. His passion for the game earned him a coaching position representing the United States in a good will tour against the top teams of Australia in Prior to college, Opdenbrouw served in the US Army where his performance was highly decorated. His experience includes tours in Desert Shield, Desert Storm, as well as the unification of Germany. Opdenbrouw, originally from Hyde Park, New York, earned a bachelor s degree in elementary education with a speech communication concentration along with a New York state coaching certification from SUNY Oneonta in Opdenbrouw and his wife Jenny reside in Nashville with their three daughters, Sarah, Hannah and Leah
