SHUCKERS STRUGGLE AGAINST NEWCOMB IN 10-0 LOSS: The Biloxi Shuckers were held to just one hit in Friday s 10-0 loss to the Mississippi Braves at Trustmark Park. Jon Perrin allowed all 10 runs (nine earned) on eight hits, three walks and two strikeouts in his Double-A debut. The 23-year-old right-hander needed 71 pitches (45 strikes) in 3.1 innings. Javier Betancourt broke up Sean Newcomb s perfect game bid with a leadoff single in the sixth for Biloxi s only hit of the game. TODAY S STARTING PITCHER: RHP Taylor Jungmann makes his 13th start of the season for the Biloxi Shuckers after starting the season with the Milwaukee Brewers (five starts) and the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (eight starts). The Shuckers have gone 6-6 when the 2011 first-round draft pick starts, including 3-0 over his last three starts. ROSTER MOVES: C Rene Garcia has been placed on the 7-day DL (hamstring) and C Parker Berberet has been transferred to Biloxi from AAA Colorado Springs. START ME UP: Biloxi s starting pitching over the 10-game homestand combined to allow just 12 runs (8 earned) in 61.1 innings, a 1.18 ERA against the Braves and Generals, while giving up 43 hits, walking 19 and striking out 56. SHUCKERS FINISH AUGUST WITH CLUB-RECORD 18 WINS: The Shuckers had a club record 18 wins in August (18-11) in August and won 12 of the last 16 games. The squad has pieced together a.256 team average (2nd, SL) and league-best 3.02 ERA. Biloxi scored 113 runs (3.9 runs/game) through 29 games. In 29 games in July, Biloxi hit just.206 as a team, with 62 runs scored (2.14 runs/game), and posted a mark of NO LAUGHING MATTER: OF Brett Phillips hit 3 HR s over his last 10 games and two in his last five, giving him a team-leading 16 on the year. Over his last 10 games, the Seminole, Fla. native is batting.280 with 3 HR s and 9 RBI. RACE FOR THE PLAYOFFS: The Shuckers are eliminated from the division race, but still have a chance of making the playoffs. They can make it if Pensacola clinches the second half and the Shuckers have the next best overall record. Pensacola currently sits 1.5 games behind the Braves for first place, and the Shuckers are 2.5 games behind Mississippi in the wild card standings. Pensacola won its first two games of a five-game series against the Birmingham Barons. OUTCOME NEEDED FOR THE POSTSEASON: With Friday s loss, the Shuckers are in a must-win situation to make the postseason for a second consecutive year. Biloxi must win its final three games of the season, and Pensacola must win two out of its final three against Birmingham. SWEET HOME MGM PARK: The 8-2 homestand pushed the Shuckers up to 13 games over.500 (41-28) at MGM Park for the 2016 season. Biloxi went games as the home team during its inaugural campaign (23-20 at MGM Park and at alternate venues). CAN T TOUCH THIS: Brandon Woodruff collected 10 punchouts in game two of Monday s doubleheader, giving the 23-year-old 115 Ks at the Double-A level. The Wheeler, Miss. native leads the organization with 164 strikeouts on the season (49/BRV, 115/ BLX). Mississippi State Bulldog leads all of Minor League Baseball in strikeouts, one more than Jamie Shultz of the Durham Bulls (163). PROSPECTING: Six of Milwaukee s top-30 prospects, according to MLB.com are on the Shuckers active roster. Those include RHP Luis Ortiz (5), OF Brett Phillips (8), RHP Jorge Lopez (14), C Jacob Nottingham (15), RHP Brandon Woodruff (25) and OF Tyrone Taylor (26). Ortiz (61) and Phillips (74) are on MLB.com s top-100. BROTHERS GUERRERO: Manager Mike Guerrero and hitting coach Sandy Guerrero are the first coaching brother combinations in affiliated pro baseball. The Dominican duo s father was Epy Guerrero, the famed Dominican scout who signed more than 50 players including Carlos Delgado, Cesar Cedeño, Tony Fernandez and most recently Alcides Escobar. 12 Manager, Mike Guerrero COACHING STAFF Guerrero, 48, spent two seasons as the Brewers First Base Coach and Infield Coach, joining them in Guerrero has managed at every level in the Minor Leagues, going (.536) over 18 seasons, with all but one season coming with the Milwaukee Brewers organization. He last served as Manager for two seasons at Triple-A Nashville in , prior to joining the Major League coaching staff. In 2013, Guerrero earned the Mike Coolbaugh Award, presented to an individual who has shown an outstanding baseball work ethic, knowledge of the game and skill in mentoring young players on the field. Guerrero began his Managing career in the Blue Jays organization in 1995 in the Dominican Summer League. He won the 2001 Dominican Summer League championship and qualified for the playoffs five times (1995, 2000, 2001, 2007, 2009). He also gained additional Managerial experience in 2008 with the Oahu CaneFires of the Hawaiian Winter League and in 2010 with the Surprise Rafters of the Arizona Fall League. He has also managed in the Dominican Winter League. Mike was named after former Major League pitcher Mike Torrez, who was a friend of his father. His uncle, Mario Guerrero, was a Major League infielder with Boston ( ), St. Louis (1975), California ( ) and Oakland ( ). Mike and his wife Larissa reside in Melbourne, Fla and the couple has two sons, Michael and Daniel. Mike was born in Santo Domingo, DR. Coach, Sandy Guerrero Guerrero, 49, enters his 14th season as a coach in the Brewers organization. Prior to joining the Shuckers in 2015, he coached at Double-A Huntsville ( , 2014) and Triple-A Nashville ( ). In addition, he spent two seasons as Hitting Coordinator from Guerrero served as Manager for the Northern Division in the 2007 Southern League All-Star Game after scheduled Manager Don Money pulled out of the contest to coach in the All-Star Futures Game. Before coaching, Guerrero had a 19-year playing career that included stints in the minors with Toronto and Milwaukee. He also played professionally in Mexico, Taiwan and the independent Northern League. The former infielder played in the Brewers farm system with Class-A Stockton ( ), Double-A El Paso ( ) and Triple-A Denver ( ). In 1998, Guerrero won a league championship in Taiwan, claiming the batting title with a.361 batting average. Sandy and his wife, Jessica, reside in Huntsville, Alabama. Pitching Coach, Chris Hook Hook, 46, is in his ninth season in the Brewers organization. He served as Pitching Coach at Double-A Huntsville the three seasons prior to joining Biloxi in Hook originally joined the organization as pitching coach at Huntsville in 2008, and spent three seasons in the same role with Class-A Wisconsin from before returning to Huntsville ( ). In 2015, he served as a pitching coach for the U.S. squad during the All-Star Futures Game in his hometown of Cincinnati. In 2014, he served as Pitching Coach with the Glendale Desert Dogs in the Arizona Fall League. Prior to joining the Brewers, Hook was the Pitching coach for the Florence Freedom of the independent Frontier League from He also spent three seasons as the pitching coach for Northern Kentucky University from Hook was a pitcher for 11 professional seasons ( ), including two years in the Major Leagues with San Francisco from He went 5-2 with a 5.89 ERA in 55 career Major League games. Originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by Cincinnati in 1989, he also pitched in the minor leagues with San Diego, San Francisco, California and Houston. He finished his playing career in the independent Atlantic League.
