Liberty will conclude a five-day, six-game road swing on Wednesday, one that included games at Charleston Southern and Longwood. Season at a Glance Liberty has won each of its last two games, a 15-4 victory at Charleston Southern on Sunday and an 8-7 triumph at Longwood on Monday. On Sunday, the Lady Flames tied a program record with 19 hits, while Katie Zavodny tied her own school record with five hits. Katie Zavodny paces Liberty with a.393 batting average and is ranked No. 2 in the nation with 29 stolen bases. Hanna Nichols bats.341, boosted by a.487 average in conference play. Sammi Shivock hits.325 with a team-high 27 RBIs, while Kelby Allen (.280) is tied with Nichols for the team lead with five home runs. Liberty vs. UNCG Recap UNCG claimed a pair of victories over the Lady Flames on April 4, 2012 in Lynchburg. Liberty built a 5-1 lead after five innings in game one, but the Spartans scored four times in the sixth and once in the seventh for a 6-5 win. Liberty s Jenny Law doubled, homered and drove in five runs, while Katelyn Bedwell hit the game-winning homer in the seventh and had four RBIs. During game two, the Spartans scored a 9-1 win, thanks to a four-run first inning and a five-run third inning. Grace Nordan made her first career start at pitcher, while Kaylee West went 2-for-2 for the Lady Flames. Heather Robb homered and had four RBIs for UNCG. Back to North Carolina The Lady Flames are 3-4 when playing in North Carolina so far this year. On Wednedsay, Liberty will play its last of nine games in North Carolina on the 2013 regular-season schedule Last year, Liberty went 5-2 in the Tar Heel State, and the Lady Flames are in North Carolina as an NCAA Division I program (since 1994). A pair of Liberty s outfielders, Katie Zavodny (Concord) and Blair Lawrence (Hampstead), will return to their home state of North Carolina this weekend. Early Trends So far this season, Liberty is 16-3 when scoring four or more runs, and is 1-15 when held to three runs or less. The Lady Flames scored twice in the seventh, and held on for the 8-7 win, ending Longwood s eight-game winning streak. Liberty capitalized on six Longwood errors on the evening. Half of Liberty s six conference wins so far this season have been decided by one run each. Katie Zavodny went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while Hanna Nichols continued her hot hitting as well, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Record Hitting Sends Liberty Past CSU, 15-4 The Lady Flames opened a three-game conference series at Charleston Southern with two losses on Saturday. However, Liberty bounced back on Sunday, scoring 11 unanswered runs and registering a program-record-tying 19 hits in a 15-4 win over the Buccaneers. Liberty s 15 runs were its most against a conference opponent since a 15-6 win over CSU on April 22, On Sunday at CSU, Katie Zavodny tied her own program record with five hits (also Feb. 27 versus Hampton), and she is the only Lady Flame ever to record a five-hit game. Holly Seiz drove in six runs on Sunday at CSU, one shy of a school record. Seiz is the first Lady Flame since Kelly Strickland (April 20, 2011) to record six RBIs in a single game. Chasing History Katie Zavodny has made a run at several records so far this season. She has set the single-game record for hits (5, two times), and also tied Alycia Stevens (1995) record with a 23-game hitting streak from Feb. 24 through April 3. Zavodny, with 29 stolen bases, needs 11 more to break Stacy Radulovich s singleseason program record of 39, set in The junior outfielder has stolen 67 career bases, 13 shy of Radulovich s ( ) program record for career stolen bases, 80. Where are We? Wednesday s doubleheader at UNCG wraps up a span of six games in five days, played in three different states (South Carolina, Virginia, North Carolina). Through the first four games of this road swing, the Lady Flames are batting.310 while scoring nearly seven runs per game. Katie Zavodny has batted.500 over the last four games, while Jill Stephens and Holly Seiz both hit.462 during that span. Seiz has driven in nine runs during the last four games, bringing her season RBI total to 17. Hanna Nichols is hitting.385 on this road trip, while Sammi Shivock has posted six RBIs. Pitcher Annah Jo Brittingham is 2-1 with a 3.62 ERA over Liberty s last four games. Take it On the Run Junior Katie Zavodny is the conference leader in steals, and is ranked No. 2 in the nation, having stolen 29 bases in 35 games played this season. She has set a new singleseason career high, as her 29 steals are the third most in program history. With one more steal, she ll become the third Lady Flame to post a 30-steal season. Liberty has already surpassed its team stolen base total from the 2012 season, with one month remaining in the regular season. Last year, the Lady Flames stole 44 bases on 53 attempts, while Liberty is 47-for-60 in stolen bases so far this year. Quick Conference Report Each of Liberty s last 13 games has been played against conference opponents. Liberty is 4-1 in Big South home games this season, and is 2-6 in conference away contests. All four of the Lady Flames conference games played on Friday have been decided by one run each. The Lady Flames have won one conference game in walk-off fashion (March 22 - PC), and lost one on a walk-off base hit (March 29 - Campbell). The sophomore duo of Hanna Nichols and Kelby Allen has been very effective in conference play, as Nichols is batting.487 and Allen has hit.415, and both players have registered 11 RBIs. Allen and Nichols are two of five Lady Flames with two home runs in conference play, joined by Amber Donovan, Holly Seiz and Sammi Shivock.

On March 22, Hanna Nichols hit a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning, as the Lady Flames defeated Presbyterian College, 5-4. The Lady Flames defeated Temple, 6-5, on March 16, registering a literal walk-off game winner, when Grace Nordan walked with the bases loaded for the winning run. Liberty then rallied from a 3-0 deficit, later the same day, with a four-run rally in the seventh inning to defeat Maine. The team scored the tying and winning runs in the bottom of the seventh, when a Black Bear dropped a popup that would have been the third out. Earlier this season, Nordan hit a walk-off, two-run homer in a 9-8, eight-inning win over Fairfield on Feb. 22. Shutting the Door So far this season, both freshman Annah Jo Brittingham and sophomore Chandler Ball have fashioned shutouts. They are the first Liberty duo since Kat Johnson and Tiffani Smith in 2011 to each post at least one complete-game shutout during the same season. Brittingham was Liberty s opening-day starting pitcher this year, the first Lady Flames freshman pitcher to start the season opener since Kayla Maddox drew the starting assignment in a 5-0 setback against Virginia on Feb. 13, 2004 Busy Road Ahead The Lady Flames have a busy month of April ahead, as they are scheduled to play 25 games during the month. The last time Liberty played 25 or more softball games in a single month came in April of 2008, when the Lady Flames competed in 28 contests. We ll Be Home Soon Following Wednesday s doubleheader, only eight out of Liberty s first 37 games this season will have been played at home. However, the Lady Flames have 12 home games and just five away games left after Wednesday. Liberty will spend the last two weeks of the regular season at home, a span of seven contests that includes midweek twin bills against ACC foes Virginia and Virginia Tech and a weekend series versus defending Big South champion Coastal Carolina. One for the Record Books Katie Zavodny went 5-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs, one run scored and two stolen bases on Feb. 27 against Hampton. In the process, she set a single-game program record for hits. Prior to Feb. 27, a four-hit game had been recorded 27 times in program history, but never a five-hit game. Zavodny has since tied her own record, going 5-for-6 at Charleston Southern on Sunday. Back-to-Back During the first inning of Liberty s 5-4 win over East Carolina on Feb. 24, Liberty got back-to-back homers from Holly Seiz and Sammi Shivock. Prior to Feb. 24, the last time that the Lady Flames hit back-to-back homers was Feb. 24, 2012, against Savannah State, when Meredith Crisante and Amber Donovan hit consecutive round trippers in the fourth inning. New Faces This year s Liberty softball team has no seniors, with a roster breakdown of seven juniors, six sophomores and nine freshmen. Liberty s opening-day starting lineup featured three freshmen - Annah Jo Brittingham, Blair Lawrence, and Katie Han. Three additional Lady Flames freshmen - Kassidy McCoy, Holly Seiz and Kenzie Friesen - have all made at least one start this season. In each of the last three seasons, six freshmen have drawn at least one starting assignment. The last time that Liberty had no seniors on its softball roster was 2006, when the Lady Flames posted a record, tying the program record for victories. Liberty s 2013 freshman class is its largest since 2004, when the team also had nine freshmen. That class included pitcher Sarah Swor, an all-conference selection in 2004.
