He also throws a two-seamer in the low 90s, a mid 70s, 12-6 curveball, and a changeup the pitch he hopes to improve the most in ABOUT SAM Wolff attended Stevens High School in Rapid City before matriculation to the University of San Diego for the 2010 season and then the College of Southern Nevada in 2011 (where he missed Bryce Harper by one year). He wrapped up his college career at the University of New Mexico where he played in the spring of 2012 and Drafted three times, Wolff signed with the Rangers before the draft even came to a close for $65,000 (it occurred from June 6-8 in 2013; he signed on June 7). He was previously drafted coming out of high school in 2009 (LAA, 42nd Round) and in after his sophomore year out of Southern Nevada in 2011 (BOS, 47th Round). Baseball America ranked him the fourth best prospect out of the state of New Mexico in the 2013 draft. Lycnhburg went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring positon against Wolff. He stranded five runners, including two at third base SEASON He has the lowest opponents batting average among starters on the staff (.214). That mark is also third in the league. In his first year as a start, Wolff is eighth in the league in ERA and has allowed the third fewest baserunners per nine innings among starting pitchers (10.42). 57% of batted balls have been on the ground on the way to a 1.62 GO/AO ratio, first among starters and third best on the pitching staff (Claudio and Stafford). May 14 - vs WS - Fired seven shutout innings before three scored in the eighth off of him SEASON Wolff finished his college career at New Mexico, where he went 7-3 with a 2.90 ERA in 16 games. A starter exclusively then, he struck out 75 and walked 39 batters in 93.0 IP. He was also an Academic All-MWC selection. Taken in the 6th round of the 2013 Draft, Wolff was assigned to Spokane after signing on June 7. Wolff allowed just two runs, both earned, in 16.1 innings out of the Indians bullpen and shot up to Hickory where he fired 13.2 innings without giving up an earned run over his 11 South Atlantic League appearances. He struck out 44 in 30.0 innings last year (13.2 SO/9 IP), which would have ranked him in the top 20 in all of minor league baseball if he qualified. He finished the season with 10.1 scoreless innings; the last run allowed came on up a run since July 31, 2013 (one unearned run vs. Charleston). The last earned run he allowed came in his final appearance with Spokane where allowed one earned run in a two inning effort against the Hillsboro Hops, blowing the save in an eventual 6-5 Spokane loss (13 innings) on July 21, That is his only blown save as a pro (and it was his first save opportunity); he went 5-for-5 in save chances with Hickory. Former big leaguer Dave Collins went there as well. Collins played and was the manager of the Salem Avalanche (now the Red Sox) in 2001, when the club was a Colorado affiliate. He was also a big league first base coach with the Cardinals ( 91-92), the Reds ( 99-00), and the Marlins ( 10). Wolff, however, like most elite baseball players did not play for Stevens but rather American Legion Post 22, as South Dakota s climate does not afford a long high school season. Stevens was ranked by Sports Illustrated in 2005 as the #1 Athletic High School in the state of the South Dakota and the 41st best school nationally for activities. The school has won over 100 state titles, with Track and Field dominating in both boys and girls competition. The boys won 10 straight titles from 95-04; although Wolff never played high school baseball, he was on the Track team, in addition to the football team. He was an all-conference basketball selection in his Junior and Senior seasons. Stevens High also boasts notable alums Becky Hammon, a six-time WNBA All-Star with the New York Liberty and the San Antonio Silver Stars, Olympic gold medalist wrestler Randy Lewis, former NBA sharpshooter Eric Piatkowski, as well as The Dukes of Hazzard regular Catherine Bach (Daisy). The high school band has played in several European countries, the Rose Parade, and at Mile High Stadium, the home of the Denver Broncos. BASEBALL BLOODLINES SINGLE GAME HIGHS Season High Career High Sam s father Steve played professional baseball as well. A second baseman and shortstop, Steve played during the seasons in the Padres system after the Friars selected him in the 13th round of the 1983 draft out of Oral Roberts University. He was a career.253 hitter and never hit a home run his son has yet to allow one as a pro. Steve played for the Spokane Indians (now a Rangers affiliate), the Miami Marlins (a now defunct team formerly in the Florida State League who became the Miami Miracle and moved to Fort Myers and became the Fort Myers Miracle in 1992, where the team is now a Twins affiliate and houses Minnesota s Spring Training), and the Reno Padres (also no longer around, were in the California League). Steve was Legion baseball teammates with current Frisco RoughRiders Pitching Coach Jeff Andrews (American Legion Post 22). Sam Wolff played for the same Legion post as well, which has had 19 players drafted by Major League teams over its history. Nicknamed The Hardhats, the post s players wear hard hats in place of regular ball-caps.
