2 PIAA District 10 Team Sports Bracketing Rules (applies to Football, Girls Volleyball, Soccer, Basketball, Softball, Baseball, Boys Volleyball) Team listed on top of the pairing is the designated home team for the purpose of uniform color only Bracket Pairings are developed with a Modified al Crossover Scheduling Each team sport is a representative tournament, which in most cases is open and/or near open formats. District 10 team tournaments are representative tournaments where each in a given sport and classification are given a specific number of entries. General Rules 1. Break all region ties to determine a definitive order of finish. (See appendix 1) 2. All bracket pairings are pre-determined based on standing in subject to the following: A. A region's top two teams cannot be bracketed in the same half of the brackets. The top two teams from the same region can only meet in the finals. B. Cross bracket where possible so no two teams from the same region play in an opening round. C. Pairings: higher placing team from a standing against a lower placing team from another. D. Brackets will be rotated in the 2 nd year of the cycle. 3. The bracketed position for teams is fixed based on the standings of a particular team. 4. In the case where a team opts outs, the position in the pairing will be left blank and the remaining team in the pairing will have a bye. The District 10 Power Ranking Index may be important in resolving ties within a, failure to complete the on line form by the deadlines indicated may result in team being placed in a lower position among tied teams or be totally eliminated from the tournament. Schools that play out of state teams must call that school to verify enrollment for grades 9, 10 and 11 and CONVERT to the proper PIAA Classification. Playoff Sites: 1. In the round of 16 the team at the top of the pairing may host the game. 2. The games in the round of 16 are District playoff games. 3. Quarter Final, semi-final and finals will be at a neutral place, except for volleyball. Neutral is defined as a place that is not a home site to participating teams. 4. Placement in the brackets may not play a major role in the determination of the game sites in the Quarter Finals, Semi-Finals and Finals. 5. Schools may opt out of hosting in the round of 16 by notifying the Tournament Director by the DATE indicated in the Tournament Packet. In the event a school opts out of hosting the remaining team in the pairing will be given the opportunity to host. In the event both schools in a pairing opt out of hosting, both schools will share the cost of playing at a site determined by the Tournament Director. ** For round of 16, Games at a home school site for Softball, Baseball, Soccer, Basketball and Volleyball: All expenses (Administrative, PIAA site insurance fee of $ for basketball payable to District 10, and Officials fees) will be incurred by home school and admission charge is optional. Charge may not exceed the District 10 playoff rate. Any receipts in excess of expenses will be retained by the hosting school. **May not apply to all sports. 3 Appendix 1 From the District 10 Handbook Article XIV: Tie Breakers for Standing Section 1. Tiebreaker A. The best record from games will identify standing. Tied teams at the top will be declared co-champions, but must go through the tiebreaker determination for Standing for playoff bracketing. Best record to be defined as the best winning percentage in play (number of wins divided by total number of games played). In those sports where ties are possible, any tie is to be counted as a half win. B. Tiebreaker determination, if necessary, to determine Standing* Each point is separate and distinct, meaning that the calculation of the first point could end the tie and going forward is not necessary. Following point 1 if teams remain tied go on to point 2. If a team or teams standing is determined under point 1 and there remains two or more teams still tied repeat point 1 for remaining tied teams minus the determined team(s). 1. Best record head to head played among tied teams: If still tied, 2. In Mixed classification s: a, b and c below applies. In pure classification s b and c below applies. a. Record against teams of similar classification in region: If still tied, b. Best won/loss record against teams above in their order of finish. If still tied c. Ranking Index point system (does not apply to all team sports) When teams are tied in a, the team with the most points using the point system will determine Standing. If after the point totals are computed there are two or more teams tied with the most points, the remaining team(s) not tied with the most points is determined to have finished below the remaining teams. In the case of the two or more teams are tied with the most points, return to point Coin toss. RANKING INDEX POINT SYSTEM FOR ALL GAMES THROUGH THE LAST PLAY DATE OR THE DATE ESTABLISHED BY THE TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR IN CASES WHERE THE TOTAL SEASON GAMES CANNOT BE COMPLETED. The Ranking index form MUST be completed by each school. The form is to be completed on-line. NOTE: In the event tied teams have an unequal number of games the points earned shall be divided by the number of games through the LAST play date. 3
