Cal Poly Recap Paced by an eight-run offensive attack and a scoreless effort over the final eight innings by the pitching staff, Fresno State downed Cal Poly 8-2 Tuesday... The Mustangs raced out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on a RBI single by Billy Saul and a run scoring double by Chaillon Tietje off Fresno State starter Michael Cooper... After a lead off walk in the second to Josh Mayo, Cooper set the next 11 men down in order before a two-out walk in the fifth to Brandon Roberts... The Bullldogs evened the game in the second on run scoring singles by Chris Patrick and Nick Moresi... Griffin Named WAC Pitcher of the Week David Griffin was named the WAC Pitcher of the Week for February Griffin pitched a career-high 7.2 innings and limited third-ranked Stanford to just two hits in a 3-1 Fresno State win last Friday... The Chowchilla, Calif., native gave up one unearned run and walked three while striking out five to earn the win in the Bulldogs season opener... In addition, Griffin retired the side in order in five of the eight innings he pitched in... Griffin bested 2003 National Freshman of the Year Mark Romanczuk... The honor was the first of Griffin s career and the first for Fresno State since April 22, 2002, when Ben Fritz received the accolade. FRESNO STATE VS. UCLA: The Bulldogs and Bruins are meeting for the first time since UCLA swept a threegame series from Fresno State in Fresno (6-0, 6-3, 13-6)... The Bulldogs ranked 13th in the country in total home attendance and 16th in average home attendance... 9,464 fans(3,155 per game) turned out for last weekend s season opening series against Stanford... The Bulldogs saw 11,874 fans (2,969) turn out for their season opening four-game homestand... Rice checked in at No. 10 in average home attendance (3,064) and No. 8 in total home attendance (119,479)... Hawai i and Nevada were the other two WAC members ranked in the polls Recruiting Class Earns High Praise The Fresno State baseball program s recruiting class was ranked No. 16 in the nation by Collegiate Baseball newspaper... The 23-man recruiting class is the first for head coach Mike Batesole and his staff and includes 10 freshmen, seven junior college transfers and six Division I transfers... The Bulldogs ranking was the highest by any WAC school, including defending national champion Rice, who checked in right behind Fresno State at No Hawai i, Nevada and San Jose State also garnered consideration. USA Baseball Honors Bulldogs Participation on National Team The Bulldogs were rated as the 13th-best USA Baseball National Team Collegiate Program by the organization during the offseason... Fresno State tallied 21 points over three categories to tie North Carolina... The ranking criteria included the total number of USA National Team players produced from (A), the total number of participations on the USA National Team by those players (B) and the total number of years (out of 19) the program has produced at least one USA National Team player (C)... During that span, the Bulldogs placed six players on national teams for international competition... Highlighting the group were Olympic medalists John Hoover (1984-Silver), Tom Goodwin (1988-Gold) and Jeff Weaver (1996-Bronze)... In total, Fresno State has been represented on the USA Baseball Team for seven of the 19 years that the organization has been selecting players and operating an official National Team. Countdown to No. 300 Currently in his his ninth season as a head coach at the Division One level, Mike Batesole is 12 wins shy of career win No Batesole spent his first seven years as the skipper at Cal State Northridge where he became the fastest coach to record career win No. 100 and 200 in school history... In eight years, Batesole has averaged nearly 36 wins (35.75) per season... Below is a list of his milestone victories. 3 Fresno State Baseball Weekly Release-February 11, 2004 Mike Batesole Head Coach (Second Year) (Cal State Fullerton 90) Overall Record: Mike Batesole became the third coach at Fresno State since 1948 and the eighth skipper overall in the program s 81-year history last season. In 2003, Batesole guided the Bulldogs to their 27th consecutive winning season and 16th straight campaign with 30 or more wins with a record. A season high nine-game winning streak that included the school s 13th Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic title highlighted the campaign. Under his tutelage, five Bulldogs earned All-WAC honors including senior infielders Chris Patrick (first team) and Ryan Haag (second team). Batesole has also continued his successful recruiting efforts with his first class at Fresno State ranked No. 16 by Collegiate Baseball. The honor is the fourth straight season that his recruiting classes have been ranked by the publication. Batesole joined the Bulldogs after spending seven seasons at the helm at Cal State Northridge, where he compiled a record. During his tenure, the Matadors captured Western Athletic (1996) and Big West Conference (2002) titles. Under Batesole, the Matadors made two NCAA Tournament appearances and were one game away from reaching the College World Series in Batesole came to Fresno State on the heels of one of the most successful seasons in his coaching career. He led CS Northridge to a Big West title with a 19-5 conference mark, earning him Big West Conference Coach of the Year honors. The Matadors finished first in the conference in home runs (89), RBI (392), slugging percentage (.503), on-base percentage (.413) and walks (298). The squad featured nine All-Big West selections, including the conference s Player of the Year, Eric Verbryke. The Matadors were ranked as high as 15th in the national polls. His career record at Cal State Northridge ranks him second all-time in program history. His.620 winning percentage is the all-time best in school history. Batesole reached the 250-win mark May 5, 2002, with a 10-3 victory against Pacific. In Batesole s eight years as head coach, 37 of his players have made it to the professional ranks. Currently, 19 of his former players are playing professional ball, including N.L. East Champion Robert Fick (Atlanta Braves) and infielder Adam Kennedy (Anaheim Angels). Besides his awards as a player and coach, Batesole has also received recognition for his work in the community. He has twice been awarded ( 97 and 99) the prestigious Performance Salary Step Increase Award from the California State Board of Trustees for meritous performance in the area of teaching, professional accomplishments and service to the university community. Batesole earned a bachelor s degree in kinesiology from Cal State Fullerton in 1990 and received his master s degree in biomechanics in Page 3 Conferences during the non-conference portion of their schedule... Fresno State plays three of the four California schools in the Pac-10 including consecutive weekend series against Stanford (home), UCLA (road) and California (home)... Bulldogs went 1-2 against the third-ranked Cardinal last weekend to open the season... Last year, FS posted a 2-4 against Pac-10 foes Stanford, California and USC... Both wins came against USC... In addition, the Bulldogs will also square off against four teams from the Big West Conference... Allowed just two runs Tuesday to drop its ERA over a point to Hello, My Name Is... When the Bulldogs took the field against Stanford last Friday, 22 members of the team donned a Bulldog uniform for the first time letterwinners return from last season s squad that includes All-WAC infielders Ryan Haag and Chris Patrick... On the mound, Matt Garza is the lone starter returning from last year s squad... However, including Garza, six pitchers who lettered in 2003 return... Matt Scott (6), Toby Girazian (3) and David Griffin (1) also have starting experience. Hit Me With Your Best Shot In 2003, the Bulldog pitching staff established a school record for hit batsmen... Last year, the staff plunked 85 batters, eclipsing the previous high of 72, set during the 2002 campaign... In 1999, Fresno State registered 70 hit batsmen... Fresno State has plunked two batters this season. Nation s Best Converge on Beiden Field in 2004 The Bulldogs confront what is arguably one of the toughest schedules in school history this season... Highlighting the non-conference schedule are three-game home series against national runner-up Stanford and national semifinalist Cal State Fullerton... The Bulldogs are one of three teams in the country that are playing three of the four top finishers at last years 2004 College World Series... Texas squares off against Rice (1st), Cal State Fullerton (t-third) and Stanford (second)... Houston faces UT (t-third), Rice and CSF... The Titans and Longhorns tied for third place at the CWS... A home series against Pac-10 foe California and a three-game road tilt at UCLA are also on the docklet...
