5 HUSKERS HOST CAL POLY, BEGIN NINE-GAME HOMESTAND The Nebraska baseball team (6-5) makes its home debut this week when the Huskers host Cal Poly for a four-game series at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park. NU begins its 17th year at Hawks Field on Thursday at 1:35 p.m. (CT). The second game of the series is set for Friday at 1:35 p.m., followed by a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12:05 p.m. Single-game tickets can be purchased at Huskers.com/tickets. HOW TO LISTEN/WATCH THE HUSKERS Fans can listen to Greg Sharpe and Nick Handley call the action on the Husker Sports Network. Every game this season can be heard on Huskers.com and the Official Nebraska Huskers App for both ios and android devices. All four games will be carried on TuneIn.com and the TuneIn App on the Husker IMG Sports Network channel. Fans in Lincoln can listen on 1400 AM and fans in Omaha can listen on 590 AM. All four games will be streamed live online on BTN Plus. Saturday s two games will be a Student U production. Subscriptions for BTN Plus are available on a monthly or annual basis. A school pass subscription is $79.95 for one year and $9.95 for one month. A conference pass subscription is $ for one year and $14.95 for one month. LAST TIME OUT The Huskers won Sunday s series finale at Wichita State after dropping the first two games. NU handed the Shockers their first loss of the season with a 10-9 win in the 10th inning at Eck Stadium on Sunday. WSU took the first two games by scores of 9-1 and 6-3. NEXT UP The Huskers continue their nine-game homestand by hosting a two-game set against Northern Colorado on Tuesday, March 13 and Wednesday, March 14 at Hawks Field. QUICK Nebraska has won 39 consecutive home openers dating back to the 1979 season. The last time the Huskers lost a home opener was in 1978 when St. Cloud State won 15-6 on March 28. Nebraska is 16-0 all-time in home openers at Hawks Field. Scott Schreiber is the only Husker to reach base in all 11 games this season. Last season, the Huskers won three of four on the road against the Mustangs. Cal Poly enters the series with a 5-7 record overall. The Mustangs opened their season at the Surprise Tournament where they went 1-3. Cal Poly took two of three at the Tony Gwynn Legacy before closing February with a loss at San Jose State. The Mustangs went 2-2 to open March against Pacific. Last season, Cal Poly went overall and finished second in the Big West with a 16-8 record. 6 MILESTONES TO WATCH 3 Jake Hohensee (97) is three strikeouts away from his 100th career strikeout. 7 Scott Schreiber (27) is seven home runs away from joining Nebraska s top-10 career home runs list. REPINSKI, ATHEY BREAK THROUGH IN WICHITA Zac Repinski and Jeff Athey entered the third week of the season a combined 0-for-17 at the plate, but combined to go 8-for-20 during NU s three-game series at Wichita State. Each of them homered at Wichita State. Athey hit his first career home run in the second game of the series on March 3. Repinski hit his first career home run in the third game of the series on March 4. His two-run shot in the ninth inning tied the game, which Nebraska won in the 10th inning. Repinski went 6-for-12 during the Wichita State series with one home run, one double, two RBIs and three runs scored. He made three starts in the infield. Athey went 2-for-8 at Wichita State with one home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. He started all three games as the designated hitter. HALLMARK LEADS NEWCOMERS STEPPING IN Several true freshmen made appearances during the first three weeks of the season, but none more than Jaxon Hallmark. After not playing in the season opener, Hallmark has started the last 10 games with five starts at third base and five starts in the outfield. Hallmark ranks third on the team in batting average (.270), tied for third in hits (10), tied for second in RBIs (5) and tied for second in doubles (2). Hallmark led the Husker offense at the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge (Feb ), going 6-for-15 (.400) with a team-high five RBIs. WILKENING SETTING THE TONE ON OFFENSE After three weeks, Jesse Wilkening leads the Husker offense in most statistical categories. Wilkening s.342 batting average is 56 points better than the next-closest Husker, Scott Schreiber (.286). Wilkening leads the Husker offense in hits (13), RBIs (13), home runs (2), total bases (21), slugging percentage (.553) and on-base percentage (.447). His 13 RBIs rank fourth in the Big Ten. Ohio State s Noah McGowan leads the conference with 20 RBIs. Wilkening ranks third on the team in runs scored (7) and tied for second in doubles (2). Wilkening was named one of 97 catchers to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List on March 6. Semifinalists for the award, which is given annually to the top NCAA Division I catcher, will be announced on May 16. The finalists will be announced on June 4 with the award presentation set for June 28 in Wichita, Kan. ALVARADO JOINS STARTING ROTATION Senior right-hander Luis Alvarado has been Nebraska s Friday starter this season after spending the 2017 campaign as a reliever for the Huskers. Alvarado is 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA in three starts over 16.1 innings this season. His team-high 20 strikeouts rank tied for third in the Big Ten, behind Michigan State s Riley McCauley (23) and Ethan Landon (21). Alvarado earned second-team preseason All-America accolades from Collegiate Baseball and thirdteam recognition from the NCBWA, while also making the NCBWA Stopper-of-the-Year Preseason Watch List. Alvarado was drafted in the 13th round of the 2017 MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners, but elected to return to Nebraska for his senior season. Alvarado, who didn t pitch during his first two years at Nebraska, made 16 appearances last season out of the bullpen. He led the Huskers with 10 saves, which tied for the seventh-most single-season saves in program history. In Big Ten play, Alvarado earned a save in all seven of his appearances on the mound. Schreiber, a two-time first-team All-Big Ten selection, was drafted in the 26th round of the 2017 MLB Draft by the Tampa Bay Rays, but chose to return to Nebraska for his senior campaign. Hohensee has made five appearances out of the bullpen this season and earned one win and three saves. Hohensee has allowed three hits and no runs in 5.2 innings this season. He has four strikeouts over his five shutout showings. Hohensee earned third-team All-Big Ten honors in 2017 after going 7-3 with a 4.39 ERA in 14 starts, and tied for the most strikeouts on the team (57). He threw 80.0 innings in 2017 after missing the 2016 campaign due to injury. In 2015, Hohensee made 12 appearances out of the bullpen for 17.1 innings, earning a 1-0 record with a 2.08 ERA. In 2014, Hohensee started three of his 18 appearances and compiled 28.1 innings. He went 0-3 with a 5.08 ERA. ALTAVILLA AIMS TO CONTINUE CONSISTENCY Junior Angelo Altavilla has started all 11 games this season with seven starts at shortstop, three starts at third base and one start as the designated hitter.
