1 ERRY AUGUSTINE JERR ERR HEAD COACH #25 11TH SEASON UW-LACROSSE, 1974 After ten seasons as the head coach of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball program it has become obvious: Jerry Augustine can get it done. Look at these major points: Five 30+ win seasons. Three-time League Coach of the Year. Five MCC/Horizon League tournament or regular season championships. So, after ten seasons at UWM this much is known: winning has become a way of life for the UWM baseball program since Jerry Augustine became head coach in Last season UWM battled injury after injury en route to a season. The highlight of the season was the play of Ben Stanczyk. The junior was named the Horizon League s Player and Pitcher of the Year before signing with the Milwaukee Brewers in the summer of In 2003, Augustine s troops finished overall and in the Horizon League, the ninth consecutive top division league finish for UWM. In 2002, Augustine led the Panthers to their third league tournament championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in four years. Augustine s efforts have not gone unrecognized, as the head coach has been honored as the league coach of the year three times and as the state coach of the year once by the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association (WBCA). In 2001, Milwaukee won a school-record 39 games while posting an impressive 16-4 record in league play. When Augustine won his 200th game late in the regular season, he became the first UWM coach in any sport to win 200 games exclusively on the Division I level. 2 In his 10 years at the helm of the Panthers, Augustine has won a school-record 289 games and is the only coach in school history to have a winning career record ( ). The Panthers recorded a breakthrough year in 1998, when UWM won 33 games. The Panthers then added to their growing tradition by qualifying for the NCAA Tournament in 1999 and upsetting top-ranked Rice before bowing out of the tournament. Prior to being named head coach Augustine served as the Panthers pitching coach for one season. Before joining the Panther coaching staff, Augustine was more widely remembered as being a pitcher for the Milwaukee Brewers from In 10 seasons in the majors, Augustine went and boasted a 4.23 ERA. In 1976, he put together a 9-12 record and 3.30 ERA on his way to being named to the All-Rookie Team. His best season came in 1978 when he won 13 games in a starting role. Augustine was born in Green Bay and grew up in nearby Kewaunee. He attended Kewaunee High School, where he played baseball, football and basketball. He played collegiate baseball at UW-LaCrosse, lettering three seasons, before being drafted by the Brewers in Jerry resides in Muskego and is the father of five children. 3 SCO COTT TT TT DOFFEK ASSISTANT HEAD COACH #5 11TH SEASON HARTLAND, WIS. A mainstay in the Milwaukee baseball program, longtime assistant Scott Doffek enters his 11th season with the Panther coaching staff. He works primarily with the team s hitting and defensive units while also serving as the lead recruiter and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the program. During Doffek s time at UWM, he has been instrumental in the Panthers rise to a league power. Since his first season in 1995, the Panthers have reset every offensive record and set school marks for wins and winning percentage multiple times. Doffek s influence reached a national level in 1999 when Milwaukee upset No. 1 Rice University, during the program s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Doffek, along with Jerry Augustine, was named the 1999 Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association (WBCA) Co-Coach of the Year. In 2001 the Panthers offense ranked second in the nation after hitting a school-record.352 as a team. Together, Milwaukee saw all 10 regulars bat above.300 and five hit over.350. The team was led by a pair of players that hit over.420, including Scott Gillitzer s school-record.424. Gillitzer is one of three drafted players and three current professional players through Doffek s instruction. This past season UWM boasted one of the best offenses in the Horizon League as the Panthers batted.311 on the season with 41 home runs, 315 runs scored while posting a.443 team slugging percentage. Before joining the coaching staff, Doffek spent five seasons ( ) in the Los Angeles Dodgers minor league system, making it to the Triple-A level with the Albuquerque Dukes. Collegiately, Doffek played baseball at Waukesha County Community College, where he won the NJCAA batting title after hitting.539 as a sophomore. He was honored as an all-region and all-conference selection. Doffek attended Hartland Arrowhead High School, where he was selected to all-state and all-conference teams. He also played football for three years. Doffek, 35, lives in Menomonee Falls with his wife Kara and two children, daughter Kori (9) and son Ty (7). 4

4 ORY BIGLER COR OR ASSISTANT COACH #22 2ND SEASON NEW BERLIN, WIS. Whoever said you can t come home again certainly doesn t know Cory Bigler. The New Berlin-native and 2001 UWM grad came back to the program last season and will enter his second season as an assistant at his alma mater. Bigler serves as Milwaukee s pitching coach while also assisting with field maintenace, recruiting, and equipment issues. Bigler worked with an injury-riddled pitching staff in 2004 but was still able to mold the unit into a solid group. Junior hurler Ben Stanczyk was named the Horizon League Pitcher of the Year with a 7-3 record and four saves while freshman Robert Michalkiewicz also excelled in his first year at UWM. A three-year letterwinner from Bigler transferred to Milwaukee from UW-Oshkosh where played in At UWM, the righthander posted an 11-8 record on the mound, pitching innings in 21 starts. Bigler s best season came in 1994 when he posted a staff-best 4.26 earned run average to go along with a team-high 47 strikeouts in 61.1 innings. Following that season Bigler was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 23rd round of the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. Bigler played two seasons of professional baseball, ending his career in 1997 after pitching for Bradenton in the Class A Florida State League. Even while playing during his college years, coaching has always been in Bigler s blood. Bigler served as a part-time and full-time pitching instructor at Mike Hegan s Field of Dreams Camp from while also serving as the pitching coach at Cardinal Stritch University in Bigler added to his impressive resume by serving as the varsity pitching coach at the high school level, coaching at Whitnall High School from and Brookfield Central High School last season. In addition to his credentials as a pitching coach, Bigler has also served as the coordinator and instructor of the Bigler Baseball Summer camps each of the last six years. The Bigler Summer Camps are run by Cory and feature instruction on all aspects of the game. Bigler, 32, his wife Marci, and newborn daughter Emery live in New Berlin. 5

5 Season Preview University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball coach Jerry Augustine isn t one for excuses. However, when your team loses over 100 games to injuries and six different regulars miss at least 15 games a piece you are at least entitled to a season with better health and a full cupboard with which to deal with. With that in mind, the UWM baseball team looks to get back to a championship level following last season s campaign. With a solid veteran lineup, improved infield defense, a deeper pitching staff, and some luck in the health department there is no reason the Panthers can t return to the elite of the Horizon League race. HITTING The Panthers return a very solid group of offensive weapons in 2005 and should boast a lineup that is not only deep, but extremely diverse. UWM batted.311 as a team last year and proved to be one of the top five offensive units in school history. Senior second baseman Charlie Reschke returns as a threeyear starter and is looking to become the first player in school history to hit over.300 for four straight Junior catcher Jeremy Wilson seasons. Ross McCoy is coming off a breakthrough freshman campaign which saw him bat.324 en route to Second-Team All-Horizon League honors. Versatile Brooks Graff batted.309 as a newcomer last season and can bat anywhere in the lineup. Joe Nowicki and Matt Curran both bring solid lefthanded bats to the lineup while junior Jeremy Wilson and sophomore Nicholas Wichser serve as quality run producers at the bottom of the order. Junior college all-american Mike Goetz should provide UWM with some speed at the top of the lineup as well as serving as the prototypical leadoff hitter. Rob Brockel, a former Wisconsin High School Player of the Year, brings a powerful bat to the lineup. Milwaukee can bring an interesting lefty-righty combination and has the depth to take advantage of late-game situations. INFIELD Like any good team, solid play up the middle is key and the 2005 UWM baseball team should excel in this area. Seniors Reschke and Steve Sanfilippo return at second base and shortstop, respectively, with freshmen Jesse Hart and Grant Berkovitz also competing for Senior Charlie Reschke and freshman Jesse Hart time. Reschke should see most of his time at second this season after being forced to play a number of positions last season due to injury. Hart, a redshirt freshman, brings great baseball pedigree and is a solid all-around athlete. Sanfilippo and Berkovitz are both slick-fielding shortstops who can help solidify the Panther defense. UWM has a large contingent of first base options led by McCoy. McCoy should see the majority of time at first but will also play the outfield when need be. In addition, veterans Shane Davis and Zak Rivera can play the position as can Wilson, Graff, and freshman Beau Padfield. Junior Curran and sophomore Brockel will handle third base with the lefthanded hitting Curran playing mostly against righthanders. Brockel, a powerful right handed hitter, could see some time in the outfield as well as the hot corner. OUTFIELD Milwaukee will have a variety of options at the three outfield positions and should boast a solid and productive offensive group. Nowicki, a junior, batted.360 last season and should man right field with sophomore Wichser seeing the majority of his time in leftfield. Speedster Goetz will patrol centerfield with sophomores Robert Michalkiewicz and McCoy filling in when need be. The versatile Graff can play the two corner outfield positions as can Brockel, a Purdue transfer, and freshman John Sarcia. 6
