2 Ross sees first game action since opener Right-hander lasts just two-thirds of an inning in rehab outing By Chad Thornburg / MLB.com Padres right-hander Tyson Ross saw his first game action since the Padres' season opener on April 4, but his Minor League rehab appearance was short-lived. Pitching for Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore on Thursday, Ross lasted just two-thirds of an inning against Rancho Cucamonga, allowing four earned runs on three hits and a pair of walks. He threw 27 pitches. Ross landed on the disabled list with a bout of inflammation in his shoulder after his Opening Day start, and his recovery was further delayed when he rolled his ankle in his hotel room last month. Ross drew praise after a pair of batting practices last week, but with the Padres out of contention, there's no urgency to rush him back. Instead the focus is on building his confidence heading into the offseason. "It's all going to be predicated on how he feels coming off of every start," manager Andy Green said on Tuesday of Ross' return. "We're not going to push him quickly, obviously, at this point in time. It's [almost] September; we're going to make sure he's healthy. My hope is that he's starting for us in mid-toearly September." Ross, an All-Star in 2014, is hoping to resume his seventh year in the Majors and his fourth with San Diego. He has a 3.64 ERA through 153 big league games (102 starts). 2

8 Tyson Ross rusty in first rehab start Padres' Opening Day starter allows four runs, doesn't get out of first inning By Jeff Sanders 9:47 p.m. Aug. 25, 2016 RANCHO CUCAMONGA Tyson Ross inched closer to resuming his season on Thursday night. With 142 days peeling off the calendar since his Opening Day assignment, the rust will clearly take more than one minor league rehab start to knock off. Pitching is not like riding a bicycle, the 29-year-old right-hander said after yielding four runs in 2/3 of an inning for high Single-A Lake Elsinore The Epicenter. You either execute or you don t. It s black or white. It s binary code. I had a lot of non-executed pitches today. They all came inside the first inning. Scheduled to throw 45 pitches with General Manager A.J. Preller in attendance, Ross managed just 28 (15 strikes) in the game after walking two batters, surrendering three hits and uncorking two wild pitches. He sat mph and flashed a decent slider in fanning one batter, but was pulled with two outs in a laborious first inning. The Storm s didn t do Ross many favors. After Erick Mejia singled sharply on the third pitch of the game, Andre Ethier pounded a ball up the middle for what looked like a tailor-made double play. Some fortune was even on Ross side, as Storm shortstop Ruddy Giron was standing at second base to cover Mejia s attempted steal only to have the ball bounced off his mouth as the runner was sliding into second base. Both runners were save. After an injury delay (Giron initially stayed in the game), Ross walked the next batter, had a run-scoring grounder sneak by a diving Ty France at third base and walked another batter with one out to load the bases. 8

9 Two runs scored on wild pitches before Noah Perio s sacrifice fly to center ended Ross afternoon on the mound. The results are what they are, Ross said after throwing in the bullpen to continue to build his stamina. I got three up-and-downs out here (two in the bullpen). I got to extend my pitch count a little bit. For the most part, I kept the ball on the ground, which is what I m trying to do as a pitcher. I ve got some things to work on in between, but this was another step in the right direction. It s been a long trying year. I ve been grinding through it. You ve got to find small victories and just continue to take steps forward. Thursday s outing was Ross first game action since Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager s sacrifice fly in the sixth inning on April 4, an Opening Day assignment in which he yielded eight runs seven earned on nine hits, two hit batters and a walk. Ross felt a twinge in his shoulder in his ensuing bullpen and landed on the disabled list with inflammation. He was on his way back from the injury in early July when he sprained his left ankle while doing exercises in his hotel room, further delaying Ross comeback. His landing foot finally sturdy, Ross threw two live batting practices leading up to his first appearance in the California League since pitching a game for Stockton in This was huge for me, just getting under the lights and back in a game setting, Ross said. It s been a long time. I ve watched a lot of baseball. It s not as much fun watching as it is playing. It s a matter of being patient and just trying to focus on what I m doing and doing things the right way. Ross will likely pitch in at least one more game with the Storm likely Tuesday in Lake Elsinore before folding back into the Padres rotation in September when rosters expand, though likely in three-, four- and five-inning spurts. He s expected to make between three and four starts down the stretch to prove to himself, the organization and potential trade suitors that both his shoulder and ankle are sound heading into the offseason. 9

10 In a lost season for both Ross and the rebuilding Padres, that will at least count for something. They were looking for me to be big piece this year, Ross said. Being the opening day starter and being hurt all season hasn t helped the team out much. To see all the changes that have been made, it s been tough to watch, but we ve got some good young talent and the future s bright for the Padres. But it s been hard to be on the sidelines the whole time. 10
