Det L, 1-6 Liriano Hammel 15,476 Det W, 1-0 Junis Boyd 15,083 Det ONE IS ENOUGH ON BRUTAL DAY--Despite wet and frigid weather conditions, the Royals and Tigers engaged in a briskly played 1-0 contest here yesterday as Jakob Junis and a pair of relievers made a second inning run hold up as KC recorded its first win of the 2-hour, 17-minute affair featured Junis allowing only two hits and a walk while fanning six over 7.0+ innings to get the win, including a stretch in which the 25-year old retired 11 in a row before surrendering a single that opened the eighth...justin Grimm entered to closeout the eighth and then Kelvin Herrera tossed a perfect ninth, fanning a pair, to record his first save of the new year...kc s lone tally came across in the second inning when Cheslor Cuthbert opened with a bloop double to right, went to third on a fly ball and then scored on Jorge Soler s sac fly...the win gives Kansas City the same 1-3 start to the year as 2017 began. JUNIS RETURNS TO WHERE 17 LIFTED OFF--The outstanding performance by Jakob Junis yesterday took place on the field where his rookie campaign took a big step forward last July 24 when an innocuous one-inning stint turned into a win and ignited a strong stretch of work...junis worked a perfect 11th inning in relief and then watched from the bench as Sal Perez and Mike Moustakas clubbed back-to-back homers to stake the then 24-year old to the win...including that abbreviated performance, Junis has gone 8-1 in his last 13 appearances (11 starts) with a 3.20 ERA, allowing 25 earned runs in 70.1 innings and holding opposing hitters to a.236 average...yesterday s seven innings of work marked the first time he has not allowed a run in a start since joining the Majors last year, but the fifth time he s allowed one or fewer runs.
