Royals vs. Tigers The Royals evened this visit with yesterday s win to set up the first rubber game of the young year...today concludes the opening visit to Detroit, with KC slated to come back here later this month, before all nine sessions in Kauffman Stadium taking place between May 3 and August 29 before the Royals return here one more time in September...KC holds a edge in the all-time work, but trails in Motown, in Comerica Park. Det L, 1-6 Liriano Hammel 15,476 Det W, 1-0 Junis Boyd 15,083 Det ONE IS ENOUGH ON BRUTAL DAY--Despite wet and frigid weather conditions, the Royals and Tigers engaged in a briskly played 1-0 contest here yesterday as Jakob Junis and a pair of relievers made a second inning run hold up as KC recorded its first win of the 2-hour, 17-minute affair featured Junis allowing only two hits and a walk while fanning six over 7.0+ innings to get the win, including a stretch in which the 25-year old retired 11 in a row before surrendering a single that opened the eighth...justin Grimm entered to closeout the eighth and then Kelvin Herrera tossed a perfect ninth, fanning a pair, to record his first save of the new year...kc s lone tally came across in the second inning when Cheslor Cuthbert opened with a bloop double to right, went to third on a fly ball and then scored on Jorge Soler s sac fly...the win gives Kansas City the same 1-3 start to the year as 2017 began. JUNIS RETURNS TO WHERE 17 LIFTED OFF--The outstanding performance by Jakob Junis yesterday took place on the field where his rookie campaign took a big step forward last July 24 when an innocuous one-inning stint turned into a win and ignited a strong stretch of work...junis worked a perfect 11th inning in relief and then watched from the bench as Sal Perez and Mike Moustakas clubbed back-to-back homers to stake the then 24-year old to the win...including that abbreviated performance, Junis has gone 8-1 in his last 13 appearances (11 starts) with a 3.20 ERA, allowing 25 earned runs in 70.1 innings and holding opposing hitters to a.236 average...yesterday s seven innings of work marked the first time he has not allowed a run in a start since joining the Majors last year, but the fifth time he s allowed one or fewer runs. ZIMMER PLACED ON WAIVERS--Kyle Zimmer was placed on Unconditional Release Waivers yesterday...the former #1 pick from the 2012 draft who has battled injuries throughout his time in the Royals system, Zimmer made one Cactus League appearance this spring before being sidelined again with a right shoulder ailment... should he clear waivers on Thursday, the Royals would prefer to bring him back on a minor league contract to continue his rehab process. NEXT STOP CLEVELAND--This series in Motown is scheduled to run through tomorrow, though Mother Nature is doing her best to interrupt the festivities... following scheduled 12:10 (CDT) starts here, the Royals will take the day off on Thursday in Cleveland, then open the Tribe s home season with a 3:10 (CDT) start on Friday, followed by the same start time on Saturday and then a 12:10 (CDT) first pitch on Sunday, April 8...KC s first extended stay in The K will begin next Monday with Seattle in town for three, including a 1:15 matinee a week from today, then the Los Angeles Angels visit for four (April 12-15). OFFENSE LIKE THE TEMPS--After finishing second in the Majors in hitting during the warmth of spring training, Kansas City s bats are having a rough time warming up through four games, hitting at just a.206 clip (20-for-97) while scoring 11 runs...kc has scored two runs during this visit here, but has managed to split. TICKET PROMOTIONS--To celebrate the first 50th Season-themed weekend, the Royals are offering a ticket promotion where for just $5, fans can purchase Outfield Plaza tickets for the game on Sunday, April 15 when the Royals host the Los Angeles Angels...the tickets are limited and located in the Field Level sections in right field and in left field, with a limit of six tickets per household, credit card and address...the Royals have also announced the Bo Jackson Flex Plan, a new ticket package that will give fans the opportunity to use mobile ticket vouchers throughout the 2018 season...through the plan, fans can purchase 16 ticket vouchers than can be used at their discretion throughout the season...the tickets can be used in any amount and can be redeemed up until first pitch of any game...different seating options are available in the Dugout Plaza, Field Box, Field Plaza and View Box...the package is available exclusively through the Ballpark App. TODAY S STARTING PITCHERS: LHP Danny Duffy (0-1, 11.25) vs. LHP Daniel Norris (1st start of 18) Career Career Danny Duffy vs. Tigers Major League Record 0-1 (11.25 ERA) Daniel Norris vs. Royals Major League Record first appearance DANNY DUFFY makes his second start of the season, his 132nd career start (160th appearance) and 20th start (23rd appearance) vs. the Tigers he signed a five-year contract in 2017 that will keep him in Kansas City at least through 2021 Duffy was originally selected by the Royals in the third round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft. GOLD MEDALIST IN 17--Duffy started the 2017 campaign by being part of the Gold Medal winning USA squad at the 2017 World Baseball Classic he went 2-0 with a 1.13 ERA (1 ER in 8.0 IP) in two starts, both pool-clinching victories he held Canada scoreless over 4.0 innings as Team USA advanced to the second round with an 8-0 win, and recorded 4.0 scoreless innings in Team USA s 6-3 win over the Dominican Republic to advance to the medal round. LEFTIES BEWARE--Since the beginning of 2016, Duffy has held opposing left-handed batters to a.175 average (37-for-212), the fifth-lowest mark in the Majors (min. 200 lefties faced), trailing only Brad Hand (.132), Craig Kimbrel (.161), Corey Knebel (.167) and former teammate Wade Davis (.173) last season, lefties hit just.167 (17-for-102) vs. Duffy, including.091 (5-for-55) over his final 10 starts in his start last Thursday vs. Chicago, the walk he issued to Nicky Delmonico in the second snapped a streak of 56 consecutive left-handed batters faced without allowing a walk, dating back to May 28, 2017 (Jason Kipnis). STRIKEOUTS FOR A CAUSE--For every strikeout he records this season, Duffy will donate $1,000 to Noah s Bandage Project, a local foundation that provides fun bandages to kids and raises money to fight childhood cancer from , he pledged $159,000 ($500 per strikeout), before upping the ante this season, which has already reached $5,000 for his effort last Thursday the foundation is named for Noah Wilson, who lost his battle with bone cancer in VS.
