2 DETERMINING METHODS VISION-SETTING Marlins Think Tank: Fifth Grade Social Studies Lesson Plan #1 OBJECTIVE. What is your objective? Student will be able to: SS.5.A.1.2- Utilize timelines to identify and discuss American History time periods. LAFS.5.W.3.9- Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research. KEY POINTS. What knowledge and skills are embedded in the objective? Chronology is used to organize information from first to last. Timelines are diagrams that show the order of events as they happened in a period of time. A timeline is divided into sections. There are labels near the date on the time line to show when the event took place. ASSESSMENT. Describe, briefly, what students will do to show you that they have mastered (or made progress toward) the objective. Through the use of contextual text students will be able to accurately organize a timeline. Students will also create a timeline highlighting future school and personal goals. OPENING (10 min.) How will you communicate what is about to happen? How will you communicate how it will happen? How will you communicate its importance? How will you communicate connections to previous lessons? How will you engage students and capture their interest? Students will enter class and immediately respond to the following prompt on the board: List five things you did in order yesterday, from the time you woke up until the time you went to sleep. MATERIALS. Student notebooks Call on some students to share their timeline Educator: You just created a timeline! A timeline is a form to organize events in a chronological order. Timeline could be used to track historical events, a trip, or a baseball team s significant milestones. Chronology is used to put things in order by events and dates. INTRODUCTION OF NEW MATERIAL (15 min.) How will you explain/demonstrate all knowledge/skills required of the objective so that students begin to actively internalize key points? Which potential misunderstandings do you anticipate? How will you proactively mitigate them? How will students interact with the material? Instruct students to take notes. Encourage the students to restate the information or elaborate on the points discussed. Student notebooks There are important things to remember when using a timeline. Chronology is used to organize information from first to last. Timelines are diagrams that show the order of events as they happened in a period of time. Timelines are divided into sections created to facilitate the location of information. There are labels near the date on the time line to show when the event took place.

3 GUIDED PRACTICE (10 min.) How will students practice all knowledge/skills required of the objective, with your support, such that they continue to internalize the key points? How will you ensure that students have multiple opportunities to practice, with exercises scaffolded from easy to hard? Split the students into groups (sizing may vary depending on class size). Each group is given a Marlins Think Tank Baseball Detective sheet with 3 excerpts from Marlins articles and 8 notable events in Marlins history. Instructions: Students will use the clues on the Baseball Detective Handout to complete the Marlins chronology or the fish line. The fish line is completed using context clues and research skills. Students should be encouraged to use the internet for research purposes. Once completed, the class will review the timeline to ensure accuracy. How will students independently practice the knowledge and skills required of the objective, such that they solidify their internalization of the key points prior to the lesson assessment? Students will complete the 9 Inning Report Handout. Each inning will include a year and event that took place in their life. Innings 6-9 are short and long-term goals they set. 9 Inning Report Handout Instructions: Students, you are creating a personal timeline using an inning report. Each inning represents a significant time in your life. The first inning is the year you were born. The fifth inning is done for you. Create short and long-term goals for innings 6-9. Lesson Assessment: Once students have had an opportunity to practice independently, how will they attempt to demonstrate mastery of the knowledge/skills required of the objective? Through the use of contextual clues students will be able to accurately organize a timeline. Students will also create a timeline highlighting future school and personal goals. CLOSING (5 min.) How will students summarize and state the significance of what they learned? Allow students to exhibit their 9 Inning Reports or share them with the class.

4 Based on the clues listed below, create a timeline of important events in Marlins history. Use the internet to research the dates of the events and list them in order. Florida Marlins win their first World Series. Florida Marlins win their second World Series championship Florida Marlins change their name and logo to the Miami Marlins. The Miami Marlins play their first official game at their own ballpark-marlins Park. Ichiro Suzuki becomes the 30th player in major league history and first from Japan to record 3,000 career hits. Marlins Park hosts the 88th Annual MLB All-Star Game. Major League Baseball owners approve the Florida Marlins as one of MLB s newest franchises.
