16 Richmond Times Dispatch Running behind: In all of minor-league baseball, Squirrels rank last in stolen bases John O Conner Baseball s all-star break brings a catch-your-breath pause for professional players. The Richmond Flying Squirrels, who begin their three-day vacation Monday, must have heavy legs among them that could use rest after already playing nearly 90 of 140 regular-season games. That fatigue is not the result of stealing bases. Minor League Baseball includes 10 full-season leagues at four tiers: Triple-A, Double-A, Advanced Class A and Class A. Of the 120 clubs in those 10 leagues, the Squirrels ranked last in stolen bases, with 23 steals going into weekend games. They attempted to steal 43 times. It s not that Kyle Haines, the Squirrels first-year manager, opposes running. I would love to steal bases. I love taking extra bases any chance you can, said Haines. We just don t have the personnel to do it. Outfielder Slade Heathcott led Richmond with six stolen bases in 10 attempts. The Squirrels, San Francisco s Double-A team, went into the weekend s activity with a record of They ranked last among 12 Eastern League teams in scoring, next-to-last in home runs. With relatively few home-run hitters The Diamond is one of the EL s most homer-stingy stadiums - and no steady base-stealing threats, Richmond s offensive operation is quite limited. Right now, we re doing everything we can to score with 27 outs, and if we just run to be running, we d be putting people in position where they re just trying to do something they can t do, said Haines. You end up playing with less outs. The scoreboard has often dictated Richmond s strategy. With low-level offense compared to opponents, the Squirrels have frequently trailed. If the opportunity is there, we re going to take it. We ll do some things from time to time when the situations arise, said Haines. But a lot of times, when you re down three runs late in the game, you can t even flat-out try it because we re not playing for one run. Richmond s best bet for a steal is outfielder Carlos Garcia, 25, who has had some big stolen-base seasons previously in his career. But he is a part-time player as a Squirrel, and had five SBs in eight attempts. Otherwise, Richmond s outfielders, as a group, don t run particularly well. That s the position that typically keys a speed game. The average age of the Squirrels position players is 26, on the old side for a Double-A team. Experience has its advantages, but base-stealing is usually not among them. San Jose, San Francisco s affiliate in the Advanced Class A California League, had 25 steals. That ranks above only Richmond among 120 minor-league clubs.

17 The Giants organization, from top to bottom, could use some steal wheels to generate offensive sparks. Only two big-league teams have scored fewer runs than San Francisco. Triple-A Sacramento is 14th among 16 Pacific Coast League in scoring. Richmond has been last in EL scoring for virtually all of the season. Advanced Class A San Jose ranks fifth among eight California League teams in scoring. Class A Augusta ranks last in South Atlantic League scoring. Sacramento River Cat News Sacramento sweeps doubleheader against Rainiers Evan Aaron-Gordon West Sacramento, CA - The Sacramento River Cats (35-53) took both games of their doubleheader from the Tacoma Rainiers (45-43) Saturday night at Raley Field. The River Cats won game one - a resumption of April 7th's suspended game before shutting out the Rainiers 3-0 in game two It took 93 days for the River Cats and Rainiers to complete their Opening Day matchup, but Sacramento got the win and officially started their 2017 campaign 1-0. Centerfielder Justin Ruggiano paced the offense in game one, launching a three-run homer in the third. After Tacoma tied things up in the fifth inning against starter Andrew Suarez, left fielder Chris Shaw took the lead back with a solo home run. Sacramento tacked on two more runs in the eighth to put the game away 6-3. Derek Law, who was with San Francisco when this game officially started, closed it out for the save. In game two, right-hander Dusten Knight led the way for Sacramento, keeping the Rainiers offense off the board while tying a career-high by throwing 5.2 innings. Knight set a new season-high with six strikeouts and allowed two free passes and two singles. Behind him, second baseman T.J. Bennett backed his strong performance with a solo home run for the first run of the game. Juan Ciriaco and Juniel Querecuto each collected an RBI in the 3-0 victory and right-hander Tyler Rogers picked up his team-leading third save this season. Sacramento will finish their four-game set with Tacoma tomorrow afternoon before heading into the All- Star Break. Right-hander Jose Flores (0-0, 0.00) will be on the hill for the River Cats. It will be righty Christian Bergman (6-0, 3.28) for the Rainiers. First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m. (PT) and the game can be heard live online at rivercats.com and on the air on ESPN Postgame Notes Suarez steps up: Andrew Suarez set a new season-high by throwing 104 pitches (66 strikes) the lefthander earned his first win at Raley Field tonight after not allowing a home run in his first three starts, he has now allowed three over his last two outings. Ciriaco continued: Juan Ciriaco extended his hitting streak to a team-leading six games went 3-for-6 over the two games and is hitting.524 (11-for-21) over his streak. 18 Richmond Flying Squirrels News Davis Delivers; Squirrels Even Series on Saturday Bowie, MD - The Flying Squirrels (36-50) pounded out 14 hits in an 11-7 victory over Bowie (46-42) on Saturday night at Prince George's Stadium. Dylan Davis homered and drove in a career-high tying five runs to lead the offensive attack. C.J. Hinojosa and K.C Hobson also added solo home runs to even the series at a game apiece. Tyler Cyr entered with the game on the line in the eighth inning and recorded the final five outs to earn his eleventh save of the year. Richmond will wrap up the series and the first half of the year on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. Tyler Herb made his organizational debut on Saturday and fell behind 3-0 in the first inning. Bowie loaded the bases to begin the first before Garabez Rosa smacked a single into left field. D.J. Steward added a sacrifice fly and Aderlin Rodriguez grounded home a run. Herb walked the next batter Wynns, but struck out Jeff Kemp to end the lengthy inning. Bowie sent eight men to the plate in the first. Richmond quickly rallied back from the early deficit, scoring two runs in the second, four in the third and three more in the fourth. Dylan Davis fired up the offense with a two-run homer over the left center field wall in the second to pull the Squirrels to within one run, 3-2. The Flying Squirrels prattled on for nine unanswered runs and chased Bowie starter Mathew Grimes in the third inning. C.J. Hinojosa opened the inning with a tomahawk home run over the right field wall. Hinojosa's third home run of the year tied the game, 3-3. Grimes then loaded the bases and that allowed Davis to deliver again with a two-run single into center field. Jason Garcia was then called upon to end the inning with Richmond leading 6-3. Grimes (3-8) lasted 2.1 innings and allowed six runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out one in the loss. Bowie's Garcia did not fair much better, walking the bases loaded to begin the fourth inning. Brandon Bednar added a two-run single and Davis agin brought home aa run, this time on a sacrifice fly for a 9-3 advantage. Bednar collected three hits in the win. Herb (1-0) rebounded form the rough first inning. The righty recorded a pair of double plays and lasted five innings in the victory. Herb struck out four and walked three. Herb benefited from a pair of double plays and the Squirrels turned five double plays in the contest. After Bowie plated a pair of runs in the fifth, K.C. Hobson launched the Squirrels third home run of the game to start the sixth. Hobson's deep blast over the right field wall gave Richmond a 10-5 lead Carlos Alvarado worked the sixth and seventh inning without allowing a run and turned the ball over to Stephen Johnson. Johnson yielded a two-run home run and was replaced by Cyr with one out in the eighth. San Jose Giants News Nuts Score Late To Edge Giants, 1-0 SAN JOSE, CA - Modesto's Chris Mariscal hit an RBI double in the top of the ninth inning to drive home the only run of the game on Saturday night to lead the Nuts to a 1-0 victory over the San Jose Giants at

19 Municipal Stadium. The loss was San Jose's (37-50 overall, 7-10 second half) second straight to begin the series and fourth in five games on the homestand. The Giants were held to just six hits in the contest - all singles - and had just one inning with a runner in scoring position. Four Modesto pitchers - Spencer Herrmann, Joey Strain, Lukas Schiraldi and Matt Walker - combined on the shutout. Albert Suarez, who joined San Jose from the Triple-A Sacramento disabled list before the game, started on the mound for the Giants. Suarez tossed three scoreless innings surrendering just one hit single during his stint on the mound. The right-hander walked one and struck out one. Originally scheduled starter Mike Connolly then took over out of the bullpen to begin the top of the fourth and kept the Nuts off the scoreboard all the way until the ninth. Modesto threatened in the top of the fourth against Connolly as Eric Filia led off with a single before Mariscal walked to put runners on first and second. Connolly through induced Joey Curletta to ground into a double play before Gianfranco Wawoe grounded out to end the inning. Facing Herrmann, San Jose then threatened in the bottom of the fourth, but also came away emptyhanded. Back-to-back singles from Ronnie Jebavy and Ryan Howard started the inning to put runners on first and second with none out. Aramis Garcia then flied out to center advancing Jebavy to third with one out. Heath Quinn was up next and he flied out to shallow right for the second out. Jebavy remained at third on the play, but Howard tagged and attempted to move into second, however was thrown out easily to end the inning. The Giants would then not advance another runner past first base for the remainder of the game. Meanwhile, Connolly continued to cruise for San Jose working around a leadoff single in the fifth before a top of the sixth. In the seventh, Curletta led off with a single before he was sacrificed to second by Wawoe. Joe DeCarlo followed with a fly out to right for the second out of the inning. Luis Liberato then hit a grounder into the hole on the right side that was stopped by a diving Jalen Miller at second base. Liberato easily made it into first for an infield single with Curletta racing around third and attempting to score on the play. Miller though jumped to his feet and threw out Curletta at the plate to retire the side and keep game scoreless. In the bottom of the seventh, Gio Brusa singled with two outs, but was stranded when Jonah Arenado struck out. Connolly returned to the mound for the top of the eighth and allowed a one-out single to Kevin Santa, but promptly picked off the runner at first. In the bottom of the inning, Junior Amion singled with out, but Miller followed by grounding into an inning-ending double play. The Nuts would then finally breakthrough in the top of the ninth. Filia led off the inning with a single before a Connolly wild pitch advanced the runner to second. Moments later, Mariscal belted a double to deep left center easily scoring Filia from second for a 1-0 Modesto lead. Walker then entered from the Nuts bullpen to begin the bottom of the ninth and quickly retired Jebavy on a fly out and Howard on a groundout before Garcia reached first safely on a fielding error committed by Wawoe at third. Walker though came back to set down Quinn on a groundout to shortstop to seal the Modesto victory.

20 Schiraldi (2-0) was credited with the win out of the Nuts bullpen after tossing scoreless seventh and eighth innings. Walker earned his sixth save of the year. Herrmann pitched five scoreless innings to begin the game with four hits allowed, one walk and two strikeouts. Connolly (4-7) was saddled with the loss despite allowing just one run over six strong innings of long relief. The right-hander gave up seven hits, walked one and struck out one during his 70-pitch performance. Notes * San Jose has scored only six runs over the first five games of the homestand. * The Giants fell to at home this season. * Connolly was making just his second relief appearance of the year (13 starts). * Modesto out-hit San Jose 8-6. * The Nuts have won four games in a row. Modesto has allowed a total of just one run during the win streak. * The teams combined for six double plays on Saturday (three each). * Suarez was making just his fourth appearance of the season (first three with the AZL Giants). * First baseman Dillon Dobson was placed on the 7-day disabled list before the game. Infielder/outfielder T.J. Bennett and relief pitchers Will LaMarche and David Owen were also transferred to Sacramento (AAA). Pitcher Heath Slatton and infielder A.J. Ramirez joined the Giants from Salem- Keizer (Short-Season). On Deck The Giants and Nuts continue their four-game series on Sunday evening with first pitch at Municipal Stadium scheduled for 5:00 PM. Augusta Green Jackets News Tourists Pour it on GreenJackets with 14 Hits Augusta, GA-The Asheville Tourists continued to swing the bats well and pulled away from the GreenJackets for the second night in a row. This led to the GreenJackets falling 8-2 Saturday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium. The GreenJackets had a 2-0 lead going into the fourth inning. With two outs in the top of the frame, Bobby Wernes hit a solo home run to trim the GreenJackets lead to 2-1. With one out in the fifth, Jacob Bosiokovic, Carlos Herrera, Manuel Melendez, and Jose Gomez hit four consecutive singles which led to three runs being scored putting the Tourists on top 4-2. Willie Abreu followed with a double, scoring another run to give the Tourists a 5-2 lead. The big fifth inning ended the night for Domenic Mazza who gave up five runs off of nine hits and struck out four in his start for the GreenJackets. Jose Morel came on in relief and gave up three runs in three innings of work. Jeff Burke then came on and tossed a scoreless ninth. The GreenJackets struck first when Skyler Ewing connected with a two run homerun with two outs in the bottom of the first, giving the GreenJackets the early 2-0 lead. It was all the scoring they would get on the night.

21 The GreenJackets will be back in action on Sunday evening for game three of the four game series with the Tourists. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05pm with the gates opening at 4:00pm. It is the third and final day of Augusta Pirates 80's Weekend. It is also Hot Cars and $1 Dogs as part of Junior Jackets Kids Club Day presented by Associated Credit Union, EdVenture Kids Museum, Pediatric Partners of Augusta, Tum-E Yummies, and PDQ. Kids ages 12 and under will also be able to run the bases after the game. Before the game, kids will be able to play catch on the field with the players. It is also the fourth Bark in the Park of the season presented by Garden City Pet. Stephen Woods (4-6, 3.07) will start on the mound for the GreenJackets against Riley Pint (1-8, 4.44) for the Tourists. Salem Keizer Volcanoes News Volcanoes ride offense to third straight win Traven Tapson Everett, WA -- The Volcanoes would fall behind after jumping out to a 7 to 0 lead but would eventually rally to win 10 to 8 on an idyllic night for baseball at Everett Memorial Stadium on Saturday evening. Since being on the wrong side of a 17 to 2 drubbing on Wednesday, the Volcanoes have rattled off three consecutive victories, scoring a total of 28 runs in the process. For the third night in a row, center fielder Malique Ziegler jumpstarted the Volcano offense by hitting a rocket high off the short porch in right-center for a leadoff triple in the first. Ziegler scored when right fielder Logan Baldwin sent a shot right back up the middle for a RBI single, giving the Volcanoes an early 1 to 0 lead. Up next was left fielder Bryce Johnson, who sent a hard grounder through the right side of the infield for a RBI single, driving in Baldwin. Third baseman Michael Sexton joined the hit party by yanking a double down the right field line, which scored Johnson. Back-to-back hits by shortstop Manuel Geraldo and third baseman Shane Matheny made the score 5 to 0 as the merry-go-round offense continued. All in all, starting pitcher Andres Torres threw 49 pitches in the inning as the entire Volcanoes order came to the plate. The Volcano bats proved relentless in the second when the boys from Salem-Keizer racked up four more hits to push their advantage to 7 to 0. Despite the early deficit, the AquaSox showed resilience in the third. 1st round pick Evan White would put the AquaSox on the board with a two-run homer to center field, making the score 7 to 2. Volcanoes starting pitcher Jose Marte lost his command from there walking the next two batters and then issuing a single on a 3-1 pitch to load the bases. The skipper had seen enough out of Marte and quickly gave the right-hander the hook. In for Marte was lefty Nicholas Deeg who promptly surrendered a bases clearing triple, drawing the AquaSox ever nearer at 7 to 6. White, who hit a two-run homer earlier in the inning, drove in two more runs on a single to give the AquaSox the 8 to 7 lead. After a barrage of runs in the first three innings, there was nothing but zeroes on the scoreboard for both teams until the top of the sixth, when Matheny drove in a run on his third hit of the game to knot the score at eight. Geraldo would then take home on a perfectly executed double steal to give the Volcanoes the one run lead.

22 The Volcanoes would tack on one more to take a 10 to 8 lead, which is where the game would stand. Garrett Cave and Peter Lannoo tossed four scoreless innings of relief to close out the game, giving the Volcanoes their seventh road win in their last eight games. The Volcanoes racked up 17 hits on the night, which gives them seven straight games of at least eight hits. Six different Volcanoes had multi-hit games tonight, with Matheny, Geraldo, and Sexton getting three hits apiece. Volcanoes right-hander Julio Benitez will square off against AquaSox lefty Oliver Jaskie at 4:05 p.m. on Sunday evening as Salem-Keizer looks to win their fourth consecutive game against Everett.
