A s vs. Royals KC s loss last night evened this 3-game set with the rubber game today...after today these clubs will get together for a final time in 2015 in the Coliseum in late June...the Royals trail the all-time play by a margin, but lead here in Kansas City, , specifically in The K. Date Site Score WP LP Att. 4/17 KC W, 6-4 Davis Otero 39,228 4/18 KC L, 0-5 Hahn Ventura 33,151 4/19 KC Oak Oak Oak ONE INNING SUMS IT UP--The Royals and A s went nine last night, but the fourth inning encapsulated the entire contest as Oakland plated all five of its runs, starting Yordano Ventura was ejected and KC never scored in a 5-0 loss to even this series...ventura worked 3.0 near perfect innings, allowing only a walk and having that runner erased on a double play, but he wasn t nearly as fortunate in the fourth, allowing a leadoff walk that opened the flood gates and was capped by Josh Reddick s 3-run homer...immediately following the roundtripper, Ventura hit Brett Lawrie with a pitch causing an immediate ejection, the first of Ace s career...kc couldn t do much against dual Jesse s as Jesse Hahn worked 5.1 scoreless before leaving with a blister and Jesse Chavez firing the final 3.2 to record the save...eric Hosmer and Alex Gordon each had a pair of hits, but the Royals were 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position to get blanked for the first time this year while also losing at home for the first time...one bright spot was the relief work of Yohan Pino, who tossed 4.2 scoreless of 3-hit work. RUBBER GAME #2--The Royals and A s will play Kansas City s second rubber game of the still young year, with KC dropping its first one on Thursday in Minnesota...Kansas City was 12-3 in regular season series deciding affairs in 2014, including a 5-1 mark here...last time the Royals and Athletics had a rubber game was last August 3 in the Coliseum with KC prevailing. WILD WEEK WINDING DOWN--This week began with Kansas City upping its season mark to 7-0 with a win in Minneapolis last Monday to open the Twins home slate, but it proved costly as KC lost rightfielder Alex Rios to a disabled list stint due to a fractured fifth metacarpal in his left hand...that would be the first of several transactions while the Royals have gone 2-3 to this point with today s finish to the second week of the season...terrance Gore was recalled for the first couple days after the Rios injury, but he was replaced on the roster Friday by Reymond Fuentes, where he stayed for not quite 24 hours before being replaced by infielder Orlando Calixte just prior to game time last night...that move was necessitated by the knee injury incurred by shortstop Alcides Escobar after he was taken out by a slide on Friday, but is only expected to miss minimal time...while all that was going on, closer Greg Holland has been dealing with a right pectoral strain and was placed on the D.L. following his save on Friday, thus the club recalled Yohan Pino from Omaha and he was immediately thrown into the fire with 4.2 innings of scoreless relief last night. PEN BACK TO BLANKING--Due to the abbreviated night by Yordano Ventura on Saturday, the Royals needed length from the bullpen and received it with 4.2 scoreless from Yohan Pino and a shutout frame from Franklin Morales...KC s pen has been scored upon in only one of the 33.0 innings it has worked thus far in 2015, with Minnesota plating three runs in the eighth on Thursday in Target Field to snap a streak of 23.1 consecutive scoreless to open the year...overall, Kansas City reliever have allowed three earned runs in the 33.0 innings for a big league best 0.88 ERA, while holding opposing hitters to a Major League low.148 batting average. DAVIS WINNINGEST OUT OF PEN--Since returning to full-time bullpen duty at the outset of 2014, Wade Davis has recorded a big league best 11 victories, with #11 occurring here on Friday night after a eighth inning of work and a pair of Royal runs in the bottom of the frame...since the beginning of 2014, Davis has an 11-2 ledger and a 0.94 ERA (8 earned runs in 77.0 innings) while limiting opposing hitters to a big league best.146 mark...hard to believe, but he s been even better since June 27 of last year, going 6-0 with four saves and a 0.62 ERA (3 earnies in 43.1 innings). 4 This & That OAKLAND WINS CHALLENGE--The Royals have yet to ask for a replay challenge through the first 11 games, but last night was the third time the opposition has requested a review and the first time it was overturned...the A s challenged whether Ben Zobrist beat out a double play ball in the eighth inning and after 1:25 under the hood it was determined that he did indeed beat the play and remained at first base. A TRIPLES MACHINE--The Major League leader in triples resides right here in Kansas City as 29-year old rookie Paulo Orlando has quickly made a name for himself after nine seasons in the minor leagues...just the third native Brazilian in history to perform in the majors (Yan Gomes and Andre Rienzo), Orlando became the first player in the modern era (since 1900) to collect four triples in his first four big league games when he tripled here on Friday night...the Brazilian Blur had a pair of triples a week ago today in Anaheim to go with a triple for his first big league hit on April 9 vs. the White Sox thus becoming the only player since at least 1900 whose first three career hits were of the 3-base variety...there were four players who had triples for their first two hits in the last 50 years...his triple streak was snapped with a measly single on Thursday in Minnesota. BUSY TURNSTILES--Kansas City had came up shy of a sellout last night due to a day of threatening weather, but 33,151 still made it to The K just a night after the second sellout in four home games with Friday night s gathering of 39,228...today is closing in on a full house as the Royals have already sold over 100,000 tickets for this 3-game series...the last time KC eclipsed 100K in a 3-game, non-postseason series, was last September in the final three home games vs. Detroit that drew 112,231. MINNESOTA IN NEXT--The Royals and Twins don t get a lot of time apart as Minnesota will invade Kauffman Stadium tomorrow for a 3-game series...kc will be out to avenge a 1-2 visit to Target Field that ended on Thursday...Kansas City went 11-8 vs. the Twins last year, including a 6-3 advantage in The K... the Royals trail the all-time series by a mark, but possess a advantage in Kansas City, in Kauffman Stadium. PREVALENT AMONG THE LEADERS--Through the first 11 games of the 2015 campaign, Kansas City s 8-3 record has been built by ranking at or near the top in virtually every category...among all Major League clubs, KC leads in hits (124), team batting (.317), on-base pct. (.377) and ranks second to the Los Angeles Dodgers for the top spot in slugging pct. (.476), while ranking first in fewest times K d (57)...the Royals are also tied for third in fewest errors (3) and fourth in the American League in ERA (3.43). NICE START IN RUN DIFFERENTIAL--Kansas City finished the 2014 regular season with a run differential of plus-27, scoring 651 times and allowing through just 11 games this year, the Royals have a plus difference of 26, by plating 64 tallies and allowing 38...Kansas City s +26 is tied with Oakland for the Major League lead...kc s 5.82 runs per game rank first in Major League Baseball, while the 3.45 runs allowed are fourth in the American League. NED CLOSING IN--The 16th full-time manager in franchise history, Ned Yost, is already the franchise leader in games managed with 786 and now one more than the late Don Zimmer for the 67th most games managed in a career at 1,744...his record in a Kansas City uniform is just 29 victories shy of tying Whitey Herzog (410) as the winningest skipper in team annals and enters tonight 23 wins shy of second place Dick Howser (404)...Yost was named to his post on May 13, this is his second stint as a big league manager after nearly six full campaigns at the helm for the Milwaukee Brewers ( )...he compiled a record with the Brew Crew including a mark in his last two seasons...ned s 838 career wins are good for 73rd all-time in baseball annals, just two behind Charlie Comiskey for 72nd...Yost, a catcher during his playing days, began his coaching career in the Atlanta organization, including 12 straight seasons on Bobby Cox s big league staff ( ). SWEENEY INDUCTION SET--Mike Sweeney, announced earlier this spring as the most recent addition to the Royals Hall of Fame, will be inducted on Saturday, August 15, prior to the game vs. these Los Angeles Angels...that will also be Retro Night, with the first 10,000 fans receiving a retro replica powder blue jersey, courtesy of FOX Sports Kansas City...the Royals have also added a Mike Sweeney Hall of Fame Bobblehead Day, as the first 10,000 fans at the Sunday, September 6 game vs. the Chicago White Sox will receive a bobblehead featuring the 26th inductee into the exclusive club...a 5-time American League All-Star during his Royals career ( ), Sweeney holds the single-season club record with 144 RBI in 2000 and the second-best batting average at.340 in he ranks in the top six all-time in Royals history in 17 offensive categories, including second in average (.299) and home runs (197)...Sweeney was a 3-time Les Milgram Royals Player of the Year (2000, 2002 and 2005) and 1999 Joe Burke Special Achievement Award winner. vs. Athletics (2015) vs. Athletics (career) At Home (career) Kazmir (career) Gibson (career) Player AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI Cain Calixte Colon Dyson Escobar Gordon Hosmer Infante Kratz Morales Moustakas Orlando Perez Starting Pitchers Breakdown Total KC Avg.
