1 SEASON OPENERS: The franchise has traditionally not fared well in season openers. Since the franchise first moved to NEPA in 1989, it has gone 8-17 when it was time to "Play Ball". The first-ever season-opening win did not come until year three for the team in The location and opponent for that 9-2 triumph? Syracuse. has not won a season opener since defeating Buffalo 1- in 21 at home. It has not won a road game to begin the year since an 11-3 drubbing the IronPigs at Lehigh Valley in 29. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: The only manager has known during its run as the New York Yankees' top minor league club (27-Present), Dave Miley, celebrates his 52nd birthday today. This off-season, Miley was named a 214 inductee to the International League's Hall of Fame. He will be formally inducted on June 7 when the club celebrates its prior 25 seasons with an anniversary celebration. Part of the fanfare will include a statue giveaway of Miley's likeness. Winner of well over 1, IL games, Miley earned his induction in the midst of a distinguished career. The two-time IL Manager of the Year was at the helm for the only Governors' Cup titles in the history of both the Louisville and franchises. The former Cincinnati Reds manager added to his legendary resume in 213 when he skippered the Triple-A All-Star game for a record-tying third time. He was named Manager of the Year in all of minor league baseball by Baseball America when he led to an IL North crown without a home ballpark in 212. HOMETOWN KID: Earlier today, the New York Yankees formally announced the RailRiders' Opening Day roster. The highlight - NEPA's own Russ Canzler. The Hazleton Area High School product boasts a.271 career Major League average between his stints with the Tampa Bay Rays (211) and Cleveland Indians (212). He also claimed IL MVP honors in 211 with that year s IL South champion, Durham. Canzler spent most of last season in the IL with Norfolk where he hit.276/.369/.43 over 86 games before concluding the year with Indianapolis. INFIELD IN: The rest of the infield includes a variety of versatile veterans in Carmen Angelini, Corban Joseph, Jose Pirela, Scott Sizemore and Zelous Wheeler. Angelini played mostly shortstop of time with Advanced-A Tampa and Double-A Trenton in 213. Joseph and Pirela saw time in last season, with the former getting his first crack at the big leagues as well. Pirela saw regular time with Trenton both on the year (124 games,.272/.359/.418), mostly at second base, and during the Thunder s run to the Eastern League title. Sizemore has played in 16 big league games highlighted by his 211 efforts with Oakland when he thundered 21 doubles and 11 home runs. He has suffered a torn left ACL twice in the last couple of years. Wheeler spent most of last season in the IL with Norfolk where he posted slashes of.268/.34/.421 with 1 homers over 9 games. During that time he had multiple starts at second base, third base and shortstop. WHAT A CATCH: The catching position features two highly-touted players on the Yankees farm in catchers John Ryan Murphy and Austin Romine. Neither man is a stranger to. Murphy, ranked by Baseball America as the Bombers' fourth-best overall prospect entering this season, made both the Triple-A ranks and the big leagues in his fourth year as a pro in 213. The 29 second-rounder also made waves defensively, leading the Double-A Eastern League s backstops in caught-stealing efficiency (.48) at the time of his promotion. The converted catcher was dubbed the Yankees system s Best Defensive Catcher entering 214. Romine held that tab and top-2 prospect status entering last year as the RailRiders primary receiver. His stay proved productive and brief. After 14 games and slashes of.333/.391/.45, Romine leapt back to the big leagues where he appeared in 6 games as the Yankees back-up backstop. OUTFIELD QUARTET: Zoilo Almonte, Ramon Flores, Adonis Garcia and Antoan Richardson make up the outfield. Almonte established himself as one of s best hitters in his first year at the Triple-A level in 213 (.297/.369/.421). The switch hitter started in all three outfield spots for and in both corner roles over 34 games with the big club. Flores, the organization s 2th-best prospect according to Baseball America, spent all of last year with Trenton where he played in 136 games for Tony Franklin s Eastern League champs. He closed the year with a bang, hitting.292 after the All-Star break including a.39/.46/.447 effort in 3 August contests. Garcia, a Cuban defector, reached the RailRiders last season in his second stateside campaign. He started in all three outfield spots over 5 games played after his July 1 debut. Garcia posted the Yankees best batting average in big league spring training (.441/.457/.559) in 34 at-bats. Richardson, who has big league time with the Atlanta Braves, spent most of last season in the IL North with Rochester. As the usual leadoff man, he led the team with 52 walks and 25 stolen bases. He has amassed 318 swipes over nine seasons of minor league baseball. The San Diego St. alumnus has mostly started as a pro (2G/129GS) since made him a 3th-rounder in 27. He has big league time with and OAK (4G/GS, -, 1.29). His debut came on May 27, 211 against STL. Coincidentally enough, he relieved current closer Matt Daley in that game. Billings was traded to OAK on June 3, 211 in a package deal for Mark Ellis. He signed with NYY this past Dec. as a free agent. This marks his first Opening Day start as a professional. Former Xavier Univ. star Danny Rosenbaum is in his second Triple-A season. His best year arguably came in '11 when he finished runner-up for the Carolina League ERA crown with Adv.-A Potomac (2.59) and led the loop in BAA (.227). A WAS 22nd-rounder in '9, he was selected by in the Dec. '12 Rule 5, but was returned Mar. 24 when signed Jon Garland. He suffered his first Triple-A loss at on Apr. 21, '13 (5.2IP, 7H, 2R, 4BB, 1K, 1BK), his lone blemish in a dominant April (4GS, 2-1, 1.14). He struggled from May 1 on though (24GS, 5-1, 4.34) and vs. (3GS, -3, 5.74,.322 BAA). 214 Regular-Season Series: vs. Chiefs Chat WHO OWN DA CHIEFS?: The RailRiders posted a 1-6 mark against the Chiefs in 213. Syracuse was the only team to finish worse (66-78) than the fifth-place RailRiders (68-76) in the IL North. Part of the Chiefs' problems - trouble at home. The team went a league-worst 3-42 in its home games while assembling a quite respectable.5 mark (36-36) away from NBT Bank Stadium. The Chiefs hit 1 points better on the road ( ), scored nearly a run more per game ( ) and posted a far superior ERA when living out of a suitcase ( ). A free-swinging club, Syracuse sported the IL's third-best team batting average (.26), but posted the circuit's third-worst OBP (.32) thanks to just 2.7 walks/game. WHO'S THE BOSS?: First-year Syracuse skipper Billy Gardner, Jr. begins his 2th season as a professional baseball manager and his first as the Triple-A level. The son of the former Minnesota Twins ( ) and Kansas City Royals (1987) manager of the same name replaces Tony Beasley who now serves as a roving coordinator in the Nats' minor league system. The 47-year-old Gardner is the fifth Syracuse skipper over the satellite's now six-year run with Washington. He came from the Tampa Bay Rays' Double-A affiliate, the Montgomery Biscuits. In his first season with the Melting Butter Tongues, he led the club to the Southern League crown in 27. Baseball America dubbed him the league's "Best Managerial Prospect" in 21 per its "Best Tools Survey" and he claimed the circuit's Manager of the Year award in 212, something his dad did with Jacksonville in Over seven seasons with Montgomery, Gardner's teams went (.511). Small world - while he's new to the Washington farm, he knows his pitching coach Paul Menhart well. The two were American Legion teammates in Connecticut. Opposition Name Opponent No. Chiefs Focus: SMOOTH CRIMINAL: Syracuse Chiefs outfield prospect Brian Goodwin signed for $3 million out of the University of North Carolina in 211 before eventually clawing his way to the Double-A ranks by the second half of 212. Goodwin began his professional career with Low-A Hagerstown, hitting a career-high.324 while hammering nine home runs before earning his Double-A promotion. His efforts made him Washington's third-best overall prospect per Baseball America. He is widely considered the top position-player prospect in the Nats system. Goodwin has had his fair share of struggles, including hitting.24 against left-handed pitching in 213. Over 122 games in a repeat campaign with Hagerstown, he posted 4 RBIs while striking out 121 times in his first season with more than 1 games played. The strikeout totals are cause for concern but, as the Nat's assistant GM/VP of player development Doug Harris told MLB Network Radio, We never want to limit a hitter s aggressiveness, particularly a guy that is as dynamic as Brian can be. Goodwin s struggles were well documented in 213, but his new skipper Billy Gardner, Jr. told Syracuse.com that he believes Goodwin "is on the fast track" and will be a "top-of-the-order guy down the road in the big leagues". Goodwin says he can do, a little bit of everything. I like to try to hit for average, but I ve got a little bit of juice. I can leave the yard every now and then. And I can play small ball, too. The Nats young slugger, who has swiped just 37 bases in 222 professional games said, I haven t been getting as many bags as I d like, but I m gonna bring a few more bags with me to Syracuse. Baseball America states that Goodwin has the ability to be a solid-average to above-average defender with a manageable arm. Some evaluators believe Goodwin has All-Star potential and could reach the Major Leagues in 215 after just one season in the Triple-A ranks. The lone outfielder on the Chiefs 25-man roster that has been added to the Nationals' 4-man roster entered 214 with a career.265 batting average, 24 home runs and driving in 92 RBIs over two pro seasons. POSITION BATTLE: Eury Perez, 23, is a highly athletic outfielder from the Dominican Republic that has been part of two previous stints with the big league club in 212 and 13. Perez set career highs in 13 for doubles (18) and home runs (7) while hitting.3 over 96 games for Syracuse. Perez earned a brief call-up to the Nats in May when Jayson Werth was sidelined with a hamstring injury and a second call-up came in September after Major League Baseball expanded its rosters. Perez saw a vast majority of his Major League time as a pinch runner due to his speed, starting just twice. Perez entered 214 with a.35 batting average over more than 6 minor league games dating back to his professional debut in 27 when he appeared in 51 games for the Nats DSL team at the age of 17. An early position battle this spring will be how Perez handles Goodwin's arrival. Goodwin is expected to draw daily duty in center field, while Perez appeared in 69 games for the Chiefs last year. Fuel was added to the fire when relief pitcher Christian Garcia insinuated Goodwin would be the club s Opening Day center field to Syracuse.com, So, Mr. Brian Goodwin - the new starting center fielder for the Syracuse Chiefs - what are your thoughts about the start of the season? Perez has struggled with plate discipline on his career. Baseball America notes, (Perez) has a chance to be a solid-average hitter, but he s a free-swinger with a career walk rater of just 6 percent. Perez, in over 4 at-bats for the 213 Chiefs, recorded just 13 walks (.336 OBP). BACK TO THE IL: At 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, Chiefs slugger Brock Peterson is an intimidating presence and certainly no stranger to life in the minor leagues. The longtime slugger has appeared in over 1, minor league games, bouncing around between the Twins and Indians before finally finding a home in the Cardinals organization the last two seasons. Peterson, one season after leading the Pacific Coast League in home runs (25) and slugging percentage (.531), will begin his sixth season in Triple-A after making his initial debut in professional baseball in 23 with the Elizabethton Twins of the Rookie Appalachian League. The free agent acquisition came to the Nationals organization after producing some of his best numbers since his stint in 21 with the Rochester Red Wings when he logged 19 home runs. He rounded out his 13 numbers with a.296 batting average and 86 RBIs. While the PCL is often regarded for its less-cavernous ballparks, Peterson understands that his role in Syracuse will be to provide the thump in the middle of the order, That s the kind of player I am, Peterson said when speaking to Syracuse.com. I m here to drive runners in. I didn t focus on home runs. I like to come to the field, take care of business. It was a fun season for Peterson who, after making his Major League debut with the Cardinals, proposed to his girlfriend in the off-season. The Centralia, Wash. native, along with the help of a 6-foot zip line, waited for his now fiancée to make the trek down while waiting for her with ring in hand at the bottom. I thought it was cool," Peterson told Syracuse.com. "She didn t know what was going on. She saw what I was doing and got excited and cried a little bit. While Peterson may have made a rather drastic change in his personal life, the slugger expects the transition back to the IL to be a seamless one, I remember swinging the bat pretty well here (with Rochester). I haven t been here in 4-5 years. It will be interesting to see how things have changed in that time.
