4 This & That A HOMECOMING FOR ADAM--The Royals yesterday selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Jason Adam (#50) and optioned right-handed pitcher Scott Barlow to Omaha (AAA)...Adam, who returned to the Royals organization last August as a minor league free agent, was promoted to Omaha in April 24 from Northwest Arkansas and worked four times, totaling 6.2 innings, giving up just two hits, an unearned run and two walks with nine strikeouts...he earned his second save with the Storm Chasers on Thursday striking out the side on 11 pitches in Iowa...while with Northwest Arkansas (AA), Adam worked six times allowing two earned run in 11.1 innings while fanning 17...Jason was KC s fifth round pick in 2010 out of nearby Blue Valley Northwest, but was traded to Minnesota on August 11, 2014, as the Royals acquired Josh Willingham for the stretch run...after injury-riddled stints with the Twins and Padres organizations he was released by San Antonio (AA) last August and re-signed with Kansas City. NEGRO LEAGUE SALUTE TOMORROW--Kansas City s annual Salute to the Negro Leagues will take place tomorrow afternoon, with pre-game presentations on the field and fans encouraged to Dress to the Nine s in honor of fans who wore their Sunday Best to Negro League games...royals players will wear throwback Kansas City Monarchs uniforms, and Detroit will wear Stars uniforms...following the game, the game-worn, autographed jerseys will be auctioned with proceeds benefiting the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, which is located here in Kansas City...the president of the Negro League Museum, Bob Kendrick, will be on hand to present the 2017 Pitcher and Player of the Year for the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum s Monarch Awards awards during the pre-game to the Royals Danny Duffy and Whit Merrifield...several Negro League alumni will be doing a free autograph signing for fans in the Royals Hall of Fame from 12:00-1 p.m...the first 10,000 fans will receive a Kansas City Monarchs Vintage Hat courtesy of Pepsi. KENNEDY CONTINUES STRONG START--The only thing evading Ian Kennedy is success in the win column as the veteran hurler has posted a solid 2.92 ERA through his first seven starts of the year...last night was arguably his best outing, tossing 6.0 shutout innings allowing six hits and a walk while fanning seven...he was particularly impressive in the fifth inning after the first two hitters reached on base hits, but Kennedy then struck out the side to avoid any damage...he also worked out of a first and third, one-out jam in the sixth with a strikeout and fly ball...his work in the fifth and sixth last night was consistent with his work all season when the opposition has put runners in scoring position, as Kennedy is holding opponents to a.119 average (5-for-42) in RISP situations this year, including 0-for- 6 last night...since joining the Royals in 2016, he has limited opponents to a.214 mark (57-for-266) with runners in scoring position. ESKY THE IRON MAN--Kansas City shortstop Alcides Escobar, who re-signed with the Royals over the winter, continues to possess the longest active streak of starts in the Majors, starting his 365th consecutive game last night, despite having to leave last Sunday s game after the eighth inning after being hit by a pitch... the next-closest player in consecutive starts is San Diego shortstop Freddy Galvis with 196. NOT JUST THE TEAM S 50TH SEASON--One common denominator with the Royals and this 50th season of baseball in Kansas City is Hall of Fame announcer Denny Matthews, who was in the booth with Buddy Blattner on April 8, 1969 and is once again calling the play-by-play during this milestone season... the Ford Frick Award winner in Cooperstown, NY in 2007, Matthews has been the one constant since the franchise came to be in 69...with this his 50th season, he trails only Los Angeles Dodger broadcasting icons Vin Scully (67 years prior to retiring) and Jaime Jarrin (59th season). FOUR TO GO FOR ANOTHER MANAGERIAL MILESTONE--The winningest manager in franchise history, Ned Yost is in his eighth full season with the club, taking the reins on May 13, he enters today with 1,096 career wins, which is good for sixth among active managers and only four shy of 1,100...he has a regular season record at the helm for the Royals, surpassing Whitey Herzog s previous team mark of 410 wins ( )...Yost is the 16th full-time manager in franchise history and is also sixth among active managers in games (2,252)...his postseason winning pct. of.710 (22-9) is tops among all managers in history who have worked at least 20 playoff games...this is his second stint as a big league manager after nearly six full campaigns at the helm for the Milwaukee Brewers ( )...he compiled a record with the Brew Crew including a mark in his last two seasons...yost, a catcher during his playing days, began his coaching career in the Atlanta organization, including 12 straight seasons on Bobby Cox s big league staff ( ). RULE 5 HURLERS ON ROSTER--The Royals are carrying a pair of Rule 5 acquisitions on the roster with right-handed hurlers Brad Keller and Burch Smith... Keller, 22, was selected in last December s Rule 5 draft from Arizona by Cincinnati and then dealt to KC, while the 28-year old Smith was acquired from the New York Mets after being selected in the draft...keller spent the year in AA Jackson last year, while Smith has big league time with San Diego in INTERLEAGUE FOES--The Royals opened interleague for 2018 with a pair of losses to the Brewers on April Kansas City is playing the National League Central this summer with a 2-game set still slated for Miller Park in June, while there will also be a 2-game home & home vs. Cincinnati and a home & home 3-game series with St. Louis...also on the slate is a 3-game series in Kauffman Stadium against the Chicago Cubs (August 6-8) and 3-game road trip to Pittsburgh (September 17-19)...the next work against National League competition will be on May in Busch Stadium. vs. Tigers (2018) vs. Tigers (career) At Home (career) Zimmermann (career) Boyd (career) Player AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI Almonte Butera Cuthbert Duda Escobar Goins Gordon Jay Merrifield Moustakas Perez Soler Starting Pitchers Breakdown Total KC Avg.
