Flames Top Virginia Tech Garret Price handcuffed the Virginia Tech Hokies for 4 2/3 innings and a single in the 10th by designated hitter Logan Mathieu knocked in the go-ahead run, helping the Liberty Flames post a 4-3 victory, this past Tuesday at English Field at Union Park. The contest was Liberty first midweek contest in three weeks. Price, the Big South Relief Pitcher of the Week, ran his record to 3-1 on the season with the victory. The right-hander yielded just two hits, striking out five and not walking a batter. Meanwhile, Mathieu had two RBI singles in the contest for the Flames. Out on the Road Starting with this past Tuesday's contest at Virginia Tech, the Flames will play 13 out of their next 17 games on the road. Liberty has posted a 3-5 mark on the road, so far this season. The Flames have won three of their last four road games. Liberty has hit.248 as a team on the road this season. D.J. Price Big South Relief Pitcher of the Week Liberty right-hander Garret Price has been named the Big South Relief Pitcher of the Week for games played March Price was called upon twice to shut down the opposition this past weekend to prevent big innings in Liberty s series against the UNC Asheville Bulldogs. In the first game of a doubleheader on Friday, Price came in with Liberty on top 5-1, but the bases loaded and two out in the sixth inning. The right-hander struck out the next Bulldog to prevent any more scoring. He then pitched two more scoreless innings, striking out six of the nine batters he faced and allowing the Flames to pull away for the 8-1 win. Price Saturday, Price entered Liberty s contest with the Bulldogs in the top of the fifth with the Flames trailing 4-2, two men on and no out. Price minimized damage, giving up a single, before retiring the next three to keep Liberty within three at 5-2. He struck out two of the batters he faced. Liberty then scored 11 runs in the bottom of fifth, en route to the victory and the series win, two games to one. Taking Their Base The Flames have walked 162 times and enter the weekend seventh nationally in bases on balls. The Flames have walked 7.0 times per game so far this season. Outfielder Tre Todd leads the the nation with 31 bases on balls, while outfielder D.J. Artis is 14th nationally with 23 and first baseman Dylan Allen is 29th with 22. Liberty finished second in the country and led the Big South with 341 walks, last season. The Flames averaged 6.2 walks per game in Yacyk Dandy "D" Liberty enters the week 11th nationally with a.982 fielding percentage. The Flames have made 15 errors in 857 chances this season. Shortstop Cam Locklear leads the Liberty defense. The sophomore has made just one error in 86 chances over 22 games. Liberty to Host Big South Baseball Championship The Big South Conference has announced that the Liberty Baseball Stadium will host the conference's 2018 Baseball Championship. The eight-team, double-elimination tournament will be played on-campus at the 2,500-seat Liberty Baseball Stadium, May 22-26, with the winner receiving the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals. This will be the second time the ballpark will host the Big South Baseball Championship, as the first was during the facility's inaugural season of That year, Liberty won the title as the No. 5 seed to mark the first time in 21 years that the tournament's host won the crown. The 2018 Big South Baseball Championship will have 10 games over its first three days, May 22-24, with live television coverage on the Big South Network. Game broadcasts for May 25 (anywhere from 2-4 games as needed) will be shown on ESPN3. The "Winner-Take-All" Championship Game on the final day, May 26 will air on one of the ESPN platforms.

Artis was one of 55 players listed on the 2018 Golden Spikes Award watch list. The list, which was announced by USA Baseball, begins the process of identifying the top amateur baseball player in the country for The 41st Golden Spikes Award will be presented in partnership with the Rod Dedeaux Foundation on June 28 in Los Angeles, Calif. Considered one of the most dynamic leadoff hitters in collegiate baseball, Artis was previously selected to two preseason All-America teams for The outfielder was named to both D1baseball.com and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) teams. In addition, he was selected the Big South Conference Preseason Player of the Year by the league's coaches. Artis was named to three All-America teams following a stellar sophomore season in The outfielder garnered selections to the D1baseball.com All-America second team and the Baseball America and NCBWA All-America third teams. The 2017 Big South Player of the Year, Artis, who also earned all-conference first team honors for the second consecutive season, finished the year second in the nation with a.532 on base percentage and as the national leader in walks with 62. Artis' base on balls total eclipsed his own single-season program record of 52 walks, which he set in In addition, he led the Big South Conference with a.359 batting average and 58 runs scored, while finishing second with 23 stolen bases. Artis, who patrolled center field for the Flames, also completed 2017 among the conference leaders in hits (ninth - 65), RBI (ninth - 45) and slugging percentage (third -.552). He collected 13 doubles, two triples and six home runs. Around the Diamond C Jonathan Embry walked three times and scored a career-high three times in Liberty's game one win over UNC Asheville, last Friday. 1B Dylan Allen enters the week second on the Flames in both RBI (20) and runs scored (23). 2B 3B SS LF CF RF DH Trey McDyre has hit.379 (11-29) over the last 10 games. He has three doubles and a triple during the span. He also has scored seven times. Tyler Galazin hit a two-run home run, his second home run of the season in Liberty's victory over Gardner- Webb on March 18. Galazin posted his first four-hit game of the year on March 17 at Gardner-Webb. Cam Locklear has had at least one hit in 13 of his last 15 games. The shortstop hit.417 during Liberty's threegame series against UNC Asheville, this past weekend. Tre Todd became the first Liberty player to hit multiple home runs in a game this season, belting two in Liberty s victory over UNC Asheville this past Friday in game one of a doubleheader. The junior leads the Flames with five home runs. Wtih a stolen base on Saturday, D.J. Artis tied for sixth on Liberty's career stolen base list with 57. He has reached base safely in every game this season. Brandon Roher hit his second home run of the season in the Flames' win on Saturday. Logan Mathieu had two hits and two RBI at Virginia Tech on Tuesday. Artis P RHP Jackson Bertsch evened his record at 2-2 on the year, last Friday. 6 The Road to Liberty YEAR HEAD COACH SCOTT JACKSON CAREER RECORD LIBERTY RECORD ALMA MATER WIFE CHILDREN SECOND SAME Campbell '98 Sarah Ryan, Tyler Scott Jackson was named the seventh head coach of Liberty's baseball program on July 17, No stranger to Liberty, having served as the Flames pitching coach in 2008, Jackson led the Flames to a record in his first season and a second place finish in the Big South regular season standings with a 16-8 mark in Following the season, Jackson saw outfielder D.J. Artis named the 2017 Big South Player of the Year and earn selection to three different All-American teams: Baseball America, National Collegiate Baseball Writers and D1Baseball.com. In addition, he saw pitcher Caleb Evans drafted in the 32nd round of the MLB Draft by the Oakland A s. Paced by Artis, who led the nation in walks and finished second in on base percentage, the Flames led the Big South in runs scored and on base percentage. On the mound, the Liberty pitching staff allowed the fewest runs in the conference. During his one season with the Flames in 2008 as their pitching coach, Jackson helped Liberty post a record and a 14-7 mark in Big South play. Liberty was the No. 2 seed at the 2008 Big South Baseball Championship and advanced to the event's title game. Following the 2008 season, two of Jackson's pupils were selected in the Major League Baseball Draft. Left-hander Ryan Page was selected in the 20th round by the Toronto Blue Jays and right-hander David Stokes was taken by the Detroit Tigers in the 28th round. During his eight seasons in Chapel Hill, N.C., Jackson helped North Carolina post a record, make three College World Series appearances (2009, 2011 and 2013), advance to six-straight NCAA Regionals ( ) and win the 2013 ACC Championship. Prior the 2013 season, Jackson was recognized by Baseball America as one of the top assistant coaches in the country. During the Tar Heels' run to the 2011 College World Series, North Carolina had one of its top scoring seasons in school history. The Tar Heels finished the year ranked No. 10 in the country with 452 runs score. Jackson's batters proved to be patient hitters, finishing the year ranked No. 2 in the country in walks (358). North Carolina had continued success at the plate during the 2012 season, finishing the year ranked No. 4 in the nation in walks (304). The following season, the Tar Heels led the country in hits (759), runs (542) and walks (369). After joining the coaching staff at North Carolina in 2009, Jackson helped the Tar Heels have 44 players selected in the Major League Baseball Draft. North Carolina's top offensive selection in 2016 was outfielder Tyler Ramirez, who was a seventh-round selection by the Oakland Athletics. Jackson worked with freshman All-America second baseman Levi Michael who was the 30th overall selection in the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft. Third baseman Colin Moran came to North Carolina as an unheralded recruit but developed into one of the top hitters in the country as he earned All-America honors and was named the Baseball America Freshman of the Year in As a junior, Moran was a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award, led the nation with 91 RBIs and was the No. 6 overall pick of the Miami Marlins in the 2013 MLB Draft. Jackson helped coach three-time All-American Dustin Ackley to Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year honors and also mentored all-conference selection Kyle Seager. Both Ackley and Seager were selected in the top three rounds of the 2009 MLB Draft, and Seager was both an AL All-Star and UNC's first Gold Glove winner in Jackson's efforts on the recruiting trail also paid off for the Tar Heels, as the program has consistently signed classes that rank among the nation's best. The 2010 group of newcomers ranked No. 7 nationally, the 2011 class was ranked No. 6, the 2012 crop was ranked No. 4, the 2013 edition was ranked No. 5, the incoming class of 2014 was ranked No. 1 and the 2015 edition was ranked No. 5. Prior to his single season at Liberty, Jackson served five seasons on staff at UNC Wilmington as pitching coach ( ). The Seahawks posted a three-consecutive winning seasons and captured the Colonial Athletic Association titles in 2004 and UNC Wilmington also advanced to NCAA Regional play in 2003, 2004 and Under Jackson's tutelage, six Seahawk pitchers were selected in the MLB Draft after going undrafted out of high school. His pitching staff established a number of school records at Wilmington, including strikeouts and saves. Jackson also had coaching stints at Campbell (2002), Barton (2001) and Wofford (2000). In addition to his collegiate work, Jackson led the Wilmington Sharks to a leaguebest mark in 2002 as head coach and coached five MLB draft picks. Jackson is a 1998 graduate of Campbell with a bachelor's degree in physical education and he earned a master's degree in education in 2000, also from Campbell. During his playing days with the Camels, he played seven different positions and posted a career.268 batting average in 182 games.
