1 2017 SEASON REVIEW San Diego Padres Communications Department 100 Park Blvd., San Diego, CA (619) All Padres game information, including Game Notes and rosters, is available at A LOOK BACK AT 2017: The Padres finished the 2017 season with a (.438) record and in fourth place in the National League West they posted a (.531) record at home and extended their streak of winning 127 consecutive games at home when leading entering the ninth inning, which dates back to July 2014 and is the longest active streak in the majors the Padres had 52 players appear in at least one game this season with an average age of 27 years and 44 days old, the second youngest average age among all MLB teams behind only the Cincinnati Reds (27 years and 26 days old). WHERE THERE S A WIL, THERE S A CYCLE: On April 11 at Colorado, Wil Myers hit a single, a double, a home run and a triple to account for the second cycle in team history in the club s 7,660th all-time game...it was also Myers first career cycle, as he had fallen a triple shy of the cycle on seven separate occasions in his career (ELIAS). Myers cycle was the 313th in Major League history, the first of the 2017 MLB season and the eighth by an opponent in Coors Field history...it was the 15th total cycle at Coors Field since the park opened in 1995 and the most recent since former Padre Matt Kemp on August 14, 2015 in the club s 7,444th all-time game. There were only three cycles in between Myers and Kemp s in all of MLB in between Kemp s and Myers cycles, there were 215 games played by the Friars and a Padre had fallen one hit shy of a cycle on 23 occasions, including 22 times missing the triple...in all, prior to Myers cycle, a Padre has fallen one hit shy of a cycle 384 times, including 280 times missing the triple (ELIAS). Myers fourth hit was a triple, finishing 4-for-4 at the dish with two RBI and two runs scored... the four hits also tied a career high (4x, most recently: July 5, 2016 at ARI). THE LONG BALL: A season after hitting a franchise-best 177 home runs in 2016, the Padres set a new home run record in 2017 with 189 long balls. The Padres hit 89 home runs at Petco Park, a team record for most home runs hit at home in a season...the previous Petco Park record was 83 home runs, set by the 2016 club.the 1992 and 1993 squads each hit 87 home runs at Qualcomm Stadium. For the second consecutive season, the Padres had 21 different players hit a home run in 2017, two shy of the team record of 23 different players in 2008 and Overall on the season there were 182 home runs hit at Petco Park, with 89 by the Padres and 93 by opponents, the most ever in Petco Park history (previous 176 in 2016) and most in San Diego all-time, ahead of 178 home runs at Qualcomm in Padres rookies combined for 59 home runs in 2017, breaking the team record of 40 set in 2016 the 59 home runs by rookies led all National League clubs and ranked third in the majors behind Oakland (66) and Chicago-AL (60)...Hunter Renfroe led the Friars rookie pack and set a new club rookie record with 26 home runs, followed by Manuel Margot (13), Carlos Asuaje (four), Dusty Coleman (four), Allen Córdoba (four), Christian Villanueva (four), Franchy Cordero (three) and Rocky Gale (one). The Padres five home runs in extra innings were tied for the fourth-most in the majors, their six pinch-hit homers were tied for the sixth-most in all of baseball and their seven leadoff homers tied for seventh. Before this season, the fastest a Padres club had four players with double digit home runs was in the 2000 season after 67 games...with Austin Hedges homer on 6/2 after 56 games, the Padres had four players (Hedges, Wil Myers, Hunter Renfore and Ryan Schimpf) with 10-or-more long balls. YOUTH MOVEMENT: The Padres had 10 players make their Major League debut in 2017, tied for the eighth-most among all clubs the Reds had the most MLB debuts with 17, followed by the Phillies (15), Twins (14), Blue Jays (13), Yankees (12), Mets (12), Cardinals (11), Padres (10), Giants (10) and Mariners (10). Over the past two seasons, the Padres have had 23 players make their MLB debuts, tied with the Athletics for the third-most in the majors behind only the Reds (29) and Phillies (24). The following players made their MLB debuts with the Padres in 2017: Franchy Cordero, Allen Córdoba, Miguel Diaz, Dinelson Lamet, Kyle Lloyd, Phil Maton, Kyle McGrath, Jose Ruiz, Luis Torrens and Christian Villanueva. GOING GLOBAL: A record total of 259 players on 2017 Opening Day 25-man rosters and inactive lists were born outside the 50 United States, Major League Baseball announced on April 3. The Padres had 12 foreign-born players on their Opening Day 25-man roster, the most in the National League and tied with the Seattle Mariners for the second-most in the majors, behind only the Texas Rangers with a total of 14. In the Midsummer Classic, Hand tossed a seventh inning to become the seventh pitcher in Padres history with a perfect inning in the All-Star Game and the first since Andy Benes in 1993 he struck out Robinson Cano, the game s MVP, on three pitches. On the season, Hand notched a career-best 2.16 ERA (19 ER, 79.1 IP), converted 21 out of 26 save opportunities and posted a 104-to-20 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Became the second reliever in Padres history to record back-to-back 100 strikeout seasons, after recording 111 strikeouts in 2016 Trevor Hoffman is the only other San Diego reliever to accomplish the feat, done so in the seasons...hand s 104 strikeouts in 2017 were the fourth-most among all MLB relievers...dating back to the 2016 season, his 215 strikeouts are third-most of any reliever, behind only NYY Dellin Betances 226 and CLE Andrew Miller s 218. 2 2017 SEASON REVIEW ON YOUR MARK, LAMET, GO: 25-year-old Dinelson Lamet s Major League career got off to a promising start in 2017, as he allowed three earned runs or less in 15 of his 21 starts, posted a 139-to-54 strikeout-to-walk ratio and limited opposing hitters to a.210 (88-for-419) average. Lamet averaged strikeouts per nine innings, the fourth-best mark by a rookie all-time (minimum 20 starts) Kerry Wood posted a mark in 1998, followed by Dwight Gooden (11.39 in 1984) and Hideo Nomo (11.10 in 1995). Among pitchers with at least 20 games started this season, Lamet s K/9 ratio ranked eighth in the majors and fourth in the NL, behind only ARI Robbie Ray (12.11), WSH Max Scherzer (12.02) and LAD Rich Hill (11.01) his.210 opponent batting average ranked ninth in the majors and fifth in the NL. Made his Major League debut on 5/25 against the New York Mets at Citi Field, tossing 5.0 innings of one-run ball, allowing just three hits and striking out eight in the Padres 4-3 victory became only the second player in club history to earn the win and strike out at least eight in their MLB debut...lhp Bob Shirley earned the win and struck out 11 in his 8.2 innings pitched on 4/10/77 at CIN (ELIAS). In his next start, he improved to 2-0 in his Petco Park debut on 5/30 vs. CHC, tossing 5.0 innings of two-run ball, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out eight in the Padres 6-2 victory per ELIAS, with his eight strikeouts, he became the first rookie since 2014 to fan eight batters in each of his first two MLB starts since NYY Masahiro Tanaka in 2014 he was the 13th rookie to accomplish the feat in the modern era (1900-present). Struck out a career-high 12 batters in his start on 6/17 at MIL, the second-highest single-game total by a Padres rookie in franchise history, behind only Oliver Perez s 13 on 7/7/02 at COL..the 12 strikeouts matched the highest single-game total by any rookie this season (also: CIN Amir Garrett on 4/19/17 vs. BAL). RULE 5 GUYS: The Padres selected or acquired the top three picks in the 2016 Rule 5 Draft, trading for RHP Miguel Diaz who was selected by Minnesota from Milwaukee first overall, trading for C Luis Torrens who was selected second overall by Cincinnati from New York (AL) and drafting INF/OF Allen Córdoba from St. Louis third overall...all three players spent the entire season with the Padres. Three times in the past decade, only three picks from an entire Rule 5 Draft have stuck on a Major League roster for an entire season the only other team to carry three Rule 5 picks on its roster for an entire season was the 2003 Tigers, which kept Wil Ledezma, Matt Roney and Chris Spurling that Detroit team went , posting the worst record since the 1962 New York Mets the Padres went 71-91, accounting for 28 more wins than the 03 Tigers. The Padres 2015 Rule 5 selection, Luis Perdomo, set career highs in nearly every category in 2017 and ranked tied for first on the club in quality starts (16), tied for second in wins (eight), third in innings pitched (163.2) and fourth in strikeouts (118) he also became the first pitcher to hit four triples in a season since PHI Robin Roberts in JOSE CAN YOU SEE: The Padres nominated left fielder Jose Pirela for the Hank Aaron Award, given annually to the top offensive performer in each league. Pirela started the season with Triple-A El Paso where his.331 average, 13 home runs and 42 RBI led the entire Padres minor league system at the time of his call up to the big league club on 6/6. Pirela proceeded to lead the Padres in average (.288), on-base percentage (.347) and slugging (.490) with 25 doubles, four triples and 10 home runs in 83 games. This past January, Pirela was named the Most Valuable Player of the Venezuelan Winter League Championship Series after helping Aguilas de Zulia claim their sixth title and first in 17 years it was his first appearance in the Venezuelan Winter League finals and he hit.450 (9-for-20) with a two-run home run in the series clincher. VETERAN LEADERSHIP: In the offseason, the Padres signed veteran pitchers Jhoulys Chacin and Clayton Richard, as well as infielder Erick Aybar, to shore up the starting rotation and infield depth. Chacin and Richard each made a club-leading 32 starts on the season Chacin led the club in ERA (3.89) and strikeouts (153), tied for first in quality starts (16) and ranked second in innings pitched (180.1), while Richard led the club in innings pitched (197.1), ranked second in strikeouts (151) and third in quality starts (14). Chacin led all of Major League Baseball in home ERA (1.79) and opponent batting average at home (.175) his 1.79 ERA is the lowest ERA of any player s first 16 home starts as a Padre in club history, ahead of Greg Harris 1.94 ERA through his first 16 home starts from , Andrew Cashner s 2.21 mark from and Kevin Brown s 2.21 mark in he has made 18 career starts (20 appearances) at Petco Park and is 11-4 with a 2.03 ERA (26 ER, IP), 95 strikeouts against 43 walks and a.185 opponent batting average...among all active pitchers who have made at least 18 starts at Petco, Chacin s 2.03 ERA and.185 opponent batting average both rank first. Richard s eight pickoffs led all of baseball, his 377 induced ground balls ranked tied for first in the majors with TOR Marcus Stroman and he forced opponents to ground into 32 double plays, which ranked tied for second in the majors he was one of five pitchers this season to throw multiple complete nine-inning games (5/21 at ARI and 8/16 vs. PHI) his innings pitched ranked 16th in the majors and eighth in the National League. Aybar made a club-leading 93 starts at shortstop in 2017 and his nine errors were the fewest since his first full season in the majors in 2008 his seven home runs were the most since he also hit seven long balls in 2014 and his 11 stolen bases were the most since he swiped 15 bags in PADRES ON DECK: It was an exciting season in the Padres minor league system as many of the top prospects in the organization provided a glimpse of what they will look like in San Diego. Fernando Tatis Jr. was named the organization s Hitting Prospect of the Year after a breakout campaign for Single-A Fort Wayne, becoming the first 18-year-old to post a season in the Midwest League the shortstop set a Fort Wayne record with 21 home runs, hit.281/.390/.520 with 68 RBI and 29 steals and was named a Midwest League Mid-Season All-Star while earning Player of the Week honors for the weeks of May 21 and July 2 he was promoted to Double-A San Antonio and finished the Texas League on a nine-game hitting streak before hitting.350 in the postseason he is currently ranked as the Padres No. 4 prospect and 51st overall by MLB.com and was taken first overall in the Dominican Winter League Draft in September. 24-year-old Joey Lucchesi earned San Diego s Pitching Prospect of the Year honors he posted a 2.52 ERA in 78.2 innings pitched for Single-A Advanced Lake Elsinore, struck out 95 hitters and walked just 19 while limiting opposing hitters to a.194 average he was tabbed a California League Mid-Season All-Star and was named Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 30 after being promoted to Double-A, he notched a 1.79 ERA (12 ER, 60.1 IP) in his 10 games (nine starts)...the Padres No. 9 ranked prospect tossed seven scoreless innings in the Texas League semifinals in his first career postseason appearance. With the third overall selection in the 2017 MLB Draft, the Padres selected left-handed pitcher MacKenzie Gore out of Whiteville High School (NC) Gore, 18, finished his senior season 11-0 with a 0.19 ERA, two saves and 158 strikeouts against five walks over 74.1 innings pitched in one start his senior season, the 6-2, 180-pound left-hander tossed 5.0 perfect innings, striking out all 15 batters faced he was named the Gatorade National Athlete of the Year, a 2017 Rawlings-Perfect Game First Team All-American and was named to the 2017 Perfect Game Atlantic All-Region First Team during his junior season, he posted a 0.08 ERA with 174 strikeouts in 83.1 innings pitched while hitting.465 with six home runs at the plate ranked as the No. 1 prospect in the Padres system and 24th overall, his professional career got underway with the Rookie-Level AZL Padres and he posted a 1.27 ERA (3 ER, 21.1IP) in his seven starts with a 34-to-7 strikeout-to-walk ratio and limited opposing hitters to a.184 average. 22-year-old Cal Quantrill, the Padres first round selection (eighth overall) in the 2016 Draft, split the 2017 campaign between Lake Elsinore and San Antonio, pitching to a combined 3.80 ERA (49 ER, IP) while posting a 110-to-40 strikeout-to-walk ratio the right-hander represented the Padres and Canada for the World Team during the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game in Miami and is currently ranked as the Padres No. 4 prospect and 37th overall in MLB. 20-year-old first baseman Josh Naylor also represented the Padres and Canada for the World Team during the All-Star Futures Game and singled in the team s first run of the game including the 2016 Futures Game at Petco Park, Naylor is now a combined 3-for-4 with two RBI in All-Star Futures Games he split the 2017 season between Lake Elsinore and San Antonio and hit a combined.280 with 25 doubles, 10 home runs, 54 runs scored and 64 RBI he was named a 2017 California League Mid-Season All- Star and was named the Cal League Player of the Month for April...also played for the Peoria Javelinas in the Arizona Fall League, earning Fall Star Game honors. 21-year-old Michel Baez made his professional debut in 2017, making one start for the AZL Padres before being promoted to Fort Wayne while with the TinCaps, the Cuba native made 10 starts and went 6-2 with a 2.45 ERA (16 ER, 58.2 IP), posted a 82-to-8 strikeout-to-walk ratio and limited opposing hitters to a.192 average on 7/31 vs. Dayton, he struck out a career-high 14 hitters across 6.2 innings while walking none, with 10 of those strikeouts being of the swing-and-miss variety.

LEAGUE LEADERS OF Nick Buss earned the PCL batting title as he boasted a.348 batting average, the first-ever such title for a Chihuahuas player OF Franchy Cordero led the league and set a Chihuahua s single-season record with 18 triples, and also ranked second in the PCL in slugging percentage (.603) and seventh in batting average (.326) Cordero s 18 triples were tied for the most in Minor League Baseball with Double-A Midlands Jorge Mateo...OF Rafael Ortega finished tied for first in stolen bases (26). RHP Bryan Rodriguez finished seventh in the PCL in ERA (4.90) and RHP Jason Jester ranked tied for third in appearances (53). RHP Kyle Lloyd tossed the Missions first-ever no-hitter at Wolff Stadium on 5/13 vs. Frisco it was the first no-hitter for San Antonio since 2014 when three pitchers combined for a no-hit performance vs. Corpus Christi, and the first solo no-hitter for a Missions pitcher since Rick Goulding in 1979 vs. Amarillo. LEAGUE LEADERS OF Franmil Reyes and INF Luis Urias finished the 2017 season near the top of many offensive categories in the Texas League Reyes led the league in home runs (25), extra-base hits (53) and total bases (235), ranked second in RBI (102), third in runs scored (79), fourth in slugging percentage (.464) and tied for sixth in doubles (27) Urias.398 on-base percentage was the highest in the league, and he finished second in walks (68), fourth in runs scored (77) and sixth in batting average (.296). RHP Brett Kennedy led the Texas League with 13 wins and RHP Enyel De Los Santos ranked tied for fifth (10) De Los Santos also finished tied for third in innings pitched (150.0) and third in strikeouts (138), while Kennedy finished fourth in strikeouts (134) and sixth in ERA (3.70) RHP Trey Wingenter led the TL in saves after converting 20 of his 26 save opportunities and ranked second in games finished (37).
