1 BALTIMORE ORIOLES GAME NOTES Oriole Park at Camden Yards 333 West Camden Street Baltimore, MD Sunday, April 13, 2014 Game #12 Home Game #6 Baltimore Orioles (5-6) vs. Toronto Blue Jays (6-6) RH Ubaldo Jimenez (0-2, 6.75) vs. LH Mark Buehrle (2-0, 0.64) TONIGHT S GAME: The Orioles and Blue Jays meet in the finale of their three-game set and the third game of a six-game homestand for the Birds, which will also see the Tampa Bay Rays visit Charm City for three games beginning tomorrow. VS. TORONTO: The season series is tied, 1-1 In 2013, the Orioles won the season series, 10-9, as they went 6-3 in Baltimore and 4-6 in Toronto The Orioles trail in the all-time series, ( in Baltimore and in Toronto) Since the start of the 2012 season, the Orioles are 14-6 at home against Toronto The Orioles are 8-11 in their last 19 games in Toronto. KEEP IT GOING: In his two starts in Baltimore in 2013, the Orioles tagged Mark Buehrle for four homers and 11 runs in 9.1 innings In their July 12 meeting, the Birds scored all eight runs against Buehrle on homers (threerun homers by Adam Jones and J.J. Hardy and a two-run shot by Chris Davis), marking the first time in franchise history the Birds had ever hit three multi-run homers off of a single lefty in a game...according to STATS, it was also the first time since August 4, 1987, that the O s scored eight or more runs in a game with all runs coming on multi-run homers Matt Wieters hit a solo homer off Buehrle in his September 26 start in Baltimore. WORTH THE WAIT: The Orioles won their first extra innings game of the year Saturday night The Birds were 8-7 in extra innings in 2013 after going 16-2 in 2012 Since the start of the 2012 season, the Birds are 25-9 in extra innings contests In games that have gone 12 or more innings since the start of 2012, the Orioles are 12-3 (13-3 if including the 2012 postseason). CLOSE CALLS: The Orioles have now had eight of their first 11 games decided by one (3-2) or two (1-2) runs In 2013, the Orioles had 82 of their 162 games decided by one (20-31) or two runs (20-11). O DEALING: Darren O Day has not allowed a run in his last 13 appearances dating back to August 25, 2013 Over his last 25 appearances since July 30, 2013, the only runs he has allowed in 21.0 innings have come on ninth inning home runs by Coco Crisp (August 24, 2013), Adam Eaton (August 12, 2013), and Michael Saunders (two-run homer on August 3, 2013) Crisp and Eaton s homers were leading off the ninth and Eaton s was a walk-off homer For his career, O Day s 1.19 ERA (60.1IP, 8ER) in April is his lowest of any month. UPON FURTHER REVIEW: The first challenge at Oriole Park was issued in the fourth inning Saturday when Blue Jays manager John Gibbons challenged a safe call on an infield single by Steve Lombardozzi After a two minute, 38-second review, the play stood. BLUE JAY BASHERS: Chris Davis has hit 16 homers against the Blue Jays since the start of the 2012 season, while Adam Jones has hit 14 over that span No other major leaguer has as many as 10 against Toronto during that span Davis and Jones have each hit at least seven home runs against Toronto in each of the last two seasons, which, according to the Society for American Baseball Research, makes them the second pair of teammates in MLB history to each hit seven or more home runs against an opponent in consecutive seasons, joining Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, who did it in three straight seasons against the Philadelphia A s ( ) and in two against the Cleveland Indians ( ) Davis hit nine home runs against Toronto in 2012, tying Manny Ramirez (2001) for the most in a season against the Blue Jays in their history and he homered in four straight games against them July 12-September 13, MATT AND HIS BAT: Matt Wieters saw his season-opening hit streak end at eight games on Friday night vs. TOR It was the third straight season in which an Oriole had hit in eight or more straight games to open a season, as Adam Jones hit safely in nine straight to open 2013 and 10 straight to open 2012 Davey Johnson holds the club record for longest hitting streak to start a season as he hit in 17 straight to start the 1971 season. SPELLING RELIEF: In 11 games this season, the O s bullpen has turned in 10 individual appearances of more than 1.0 inning: Zach Britton (four times, each 2.0IP), Josh Stinson (twice, 2.2 & 2.1), Ryan Webb (twice, 1.2 & 1.1) & Evan Meek (twice, 1.1 each) Overall, the bullpen has pitched to a 2.70 ERA (30.0IP, 9ER, 23K). WHOA NELLIE: Nelson Cruz homered in his first two games as an Oriole According to Elias, he is the fifth Oriole to do so, joining Frank Robinson (1966), Rafael Palmeiro (1994), Pete Incaviglia (1996) and Sal Fasano (2005) Cruz became the 25 th Oriole to hit a home run in his first game as an Oriole and the first to homer in his Birds debut on Opening Day since Cesar Izturis (April 6, 2009 vs. NYY). SEEING STARS: This off-season, the Birds added three former All-Stars in OF Nelson Cruz (TEX 09 & 13) and RHPs Ubaldo Jimenez (COL 10) & Evan Meek (PIT 10) In 2013, the O s sent five to the Midsummer Classic: 1B Chris Davis, 3B Manny Machado, SS J.J. Hardy, CF Adam Jones & RHP Chris Tillman. DE-FENSE: The O s 119 errorless games last season set a ML record, surpassing the 2008 Houston Astros (113 in 161 games) for most errorless games in a season since 1900 The Birds made 54 errors, also setting a ML record for fewest errors in a 162-game season (previous record 65, 2003 Seattle Mariners) The O s led MLB with a.991 fielding percentage, setting a major league record for highest fielding percentage in baseball history, topping the 2007 Rockies.989 mark The Orioles were the first team in MLB history to post 100 errorless games by the end of August (they had 101) The O s previous season-low for team errors was 104 in AS GOOD AS GOLD: The Orioles had six finalists for the Rawlings Gold Glove Award in 2013: Chris Davis, J.J.
