LHP John Danks, who is unbeaten in 14 career starts vs. the Royals, takes the mound for Chicago. The White Sox have 13 games remaining this season, including nine on the road and four at U.S. Cellular Field. Following this series at Kauffman Stadium, the Sox will continue the trip at Tampa Bay (9/19-21) and Detroit (9/22-24). TONIGHT S STORYLINES Jose Abreu (35 home runs) needs one home run to establish a White Sox rookie single-season record for homers. Chicago plays 10 of its final 13 games this season vs. Kansas City and Detroit (DET leads K.C. by 1.5 games in AL Central). The White Sox have lost six of the last seven games vs. Kansas City but are 9-4 in the last 13 at Kauffman Stadium. Chicago is 1-8 over its last nine road games. Sox starters own a 2.81 ERA (20 ER/64.0 IP) over the last 10 games (since 9/5), including eight quality starts White Sox pitchers have recorded 40 strikeouts in the last four games. John Danks is 6-0 with a 2.58 ERA (26 ER/90.2 IP) over 14 career starts vs. Kansas City (11 QS) see note below. YESTERDAY S RECAP Jose Abreu tied Ron Kittle s franchise rookie record by hitting his 35th home run in Chicago s 6-4 loss to Minnesota. With the win, the Twins avoided a three-game sweep and defeated the White Sox in the season series, The Twins scored two runs in both the second and fourth innings off starter Hector Noesi (L; 5 ER/6.2 IP), including homers by Trevor Plouffe (solo) and Jordan Schafer (two-run). Abreu homered in his second straight game after snapping a stretch of 80 consecutive PAs without a homer on Saturday Adrian Nieto hit his fi rst home run at U.S. Cellular Field. FAREWELL TO THE K This three-game set marks 1B/DH Paul Konerko s final series at Kauffman Stadium his 121 games at Kansas City are the most by an active opposing player. ABREU TIES CLUB RECORD Jose Abreu hit his 35th home run in the ninth inning yesterday, tying Ron Kittle (1983) for the White Sox rookie record. He became just the 10th rookie in baseball history to hit 35 or more homers in a season he is tied for sixth all-time with Kittle, Mike Piazza (1993), Hal Trosky (1934) and Rudy York (1937). Abreu s 35 home runs are the most by a player in his rookie season since St. Louis Albert Pujols hit 37 in Abreu s 102 RBI are the third-most by a Sox rookie. ROOKIE PHENOM A look at Jose Abreu s rookie accomplishments in 2014: Attempting to become the sixth player in White Sox history to win AL Rookie of the Year honors and fi rst since Ozzie Guillen in Attempting to become the third player (4x) in Sox history to lead the AL in HR (Bill Melton, 1971 and Dick Allen, 1972, 74), second to lead in RBI (Allen, 1972) and sixth (7x) to lead in SLG (Albert Belle, 1998). Is the fourth rookie in club history to record 100+ RBI in a season, joining Smead Jolley (114, 1930), Zeke Bonura (110, 1934) and Ron Kittle (100, 1983) joins Hal Trosky (1934), Ted Williams (1939) and Albert Pujols (2001) as the only players in MLB history to record 30 doubles, 30 home runs and 100 RBI in their rookie campaign. Is the fi rst Sox player since Paul Konerko in 2010 (30/39/111) to record 30 doubles, 30 home runs and 100 RBI in one season. Has driven in three-plus runs in a game 14 times, the second-highest total by a Sox rookie behind Zeke Bonura s 15 in 1934 (Elias). PAUL KONERKO S FAREWELL SEASON Paul Konerko is playing in his 18th and fi nal season, including 16 with the White Sox agreed to a one-year contract on 12/4/13. His 16-season tenure with the White Sox is the second-longest with a current team behind the Yankees Derek Jeter (20 seasons). Ranks among the franchise leaders in virtually every offensive category is the club leader in total bases and ranks second in home runs (Frank Thomas), RBI (Thomas) and games played (Luke Appling). The White Sox captain was part of the 2005 World Series championship team, was named the ALCS MVP and is a six-time All-Star. WHITE SOX VS. KANSAS CITY The White Sox trail in the season series, 4-8, with seven games remaining (three on the road and four at home). The Sox are hitting.244 (99-405) with 27 homers with a 4.63 ERA (54 ER/105.0 IP) and have been outsocred, Chicago is overall since 2012 (12-12 on the road). The White Sox lead the all-time series, they are at home ( at U.S. Cellular Field) and on the road ( at Kauffman Stadium). Paul Konerko leads active players with 48 HR and 150 RBI. Sale leads the AL in ERA (1.99), winning pct. (.800), opponents average (.198) and SO/9.0 IP (10.60), is tied for the league lead in WHIP (0.92) and ranks second in OPS (.543). Sale is attempting to become the fi rst Sox pitcher to lead the AL in ERA since Joel Horlen in 1967 (2.08) his 1.99 mark would be the lowest by a Sox since Wilbur Wood (1.91) in SECOND-HALF SURGE The White Sox are tied for third in the American League with a.258 batting average (466-1,804) in the second half.
