The new scholarship is named tor Major John (Jack )Johnson Jr., who Was an outstanding athleteat!he Un1 v ersity. He was killed in etlan in the Vicinity of Cassino, U January 25, 1944, while serving as the executive officer of the loath Inf. Battalion. A. degree ln June, 1935 from the Unlversl ty of Hawal1 and prlor to belng ln the army was employed as an ovel' seer of Mo Blrde Sugar Co., on Kaual and later as an asslstant agrlcu1turlst wlth t~e HSPA. Major Johnson, who was born ln Los Angeles ln 1914, entered servlce ln 1942 as a captaln. He tralned wlth the 100th ln Camp McCoy, Wlscomlln and Camp ~elby, M18S1ss1ppl and fought va111ant- 1y wlth the Batta110n up the Ita11an boot untl1 the tlme of his death. On Dec. 23, 1943, he was promoted to the rank of Major and made executlve offlcer of the Ba tta110n ln a ceremony marked by the presenoe of General Mar k Clark. On November 25, 1945, Major Johnson was awarded the Bronze Star posthumously for extraordinary bravery ln actlon. War corresfondent Clark Lee wrote ot him, He was a great lad. He had the sun ot the Islands 1n his speech Most of all he felt a tremendous responsibl11ty to the boys he commanded." In honor of Hawal1's 100th Infantry Batta110n and 1n memory of his son, the late Mr. John A. Johnson created a new hiblscus wb1ch he presented to the CLUB 100--the "Hawaii 100th Int. Bn. Hib1sous." Also, before hls death last June, the elder J~hnson donated his large co11ectlon ot hiblscus varlet1es to 'the Un~ Ter&ity of Hawal1 1n memory of Un1versity boys lost ln actlon.
