Wander Franco and Nick Heath paced the offense with a pair of hits and drove in a run each. With the loss Wilmington is now 4.5 games behind the Salem Red Sox and 3.5 back of Frederick in the Carolina League North Wild Card race. TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS IN SALEM: Home-field advantage has been the key in the season series between the Wilmington Blue Rocks and Salem Red Sox in The Rocks are a robust 10-4 on the season when facing Salem at Frawley Stadium, including a four-game sweep to end the first half which kept the Red Sox from winning the Carolina League Northern Division crown. Conversely, Wilmington is just 2-8 this year at Haley Toyota Field. Salem is also the site of two out of three of the Blue Crew s walk-off defeats this season. WONDERFUL WANDER FRANCO: Wander Franco has put together a tremendous campaign in With his two hits during Thursday s loss at Frederick, the third baseman now has 126 hits this season, the most since he totaled 128 hits in 2015 with Low-A Lexington. The 126 hits pace the Blue Rocks, is good for top-five in the Carolina League and are the most by a Blue Rock hitter since Adrian Ortiz smacked 126 hits in Franco is hitting a robust.324 in the month of August. LOVING THE LONG BALL: The Wilmington Blue Rocks have used the long ball to their advantage at the start of the team s final road trip of the 2017 season. The Rocks got a two-run blast from Travis Maezes in the second inning on Wednesday and another tworun bomb from Roman Collins in the fifth. That came just 24 hours after Wilmington hit a season-high-tying three homers on Tuesday, with Brandon Downes, John Brontsema and Chris DeVito each going yard. The Blue Crew have now hit 18 home runs this season at Frederick s Nymeo Field, more than any other road venue for Jamie Quirk s squad. That total is just three fewer than the club has slugged at the friendly confines of Frawley Stadium, despite playing only 15 games in Frederick. Wilmington is still last in the Carolina League with 77 total long balls. MAEZES MAKES A SPLASH: Travis Maezes worked his way out of a prolonged slump in the Frederick series. The Ann Arbor Michigan native and University of Michigan alum entered Wednesday in the midst of a 5-for-34 rough patch during which he had struck out 11 times. But the designated hitter slugged a two-run dinger and added a walk in game two of the Rocks series in Frederick. The home run was Maezes first since July 27 and only his second since spending three weeks on the disabled list in early-july. COLLINS CONTINUES TO COME THROUGH: Roman Collins has put together a fantastic second season with the Blue Rocks in On Wednesday the outfielder hit a two-run homer in the fifth frame. It was Collins eighth dinger of the season and his first in the month of August. It was also his 37th extra-base hit of the season and his 52nd run batted in. Both of those totals lead all Blue Rocks. The Boca Raton, Florida resident played 22 games for the Blue Crew in 2016 and managed just three extra-base knocks and five RBI. TONS OF TIGHT GAMES: The Blue Rocks have played in a Carolina League-high 45 one-run games so far in The Rocks are now in such contests. Wilmington opened the season just 4-13 in one-run games, then won 17 of their next 19, before dropping six of its last nine affairs decided by one tally. THEY SAID IT MANAGER JAMIE QUIRK: Frederick played better than us (Thursday night). They made plays on defense and got big hits when they needed to. We couldn t make a pitch when we needed to, they had good at-bats and got the job done... (Jared) Ruxer was good. We couldn t get the shutdown inning. We scored and then they scored. That killed our momentum and we had to fight back and offensively, we aren t strong enough to keep fighting back. Ruxer did a good job and held his own. He kept the game in check, but the big one was the (Yermin) Mercedes hit. I thought it was a poor pitch, poor selection and poor location...you like to see how guys react and get through it. That s the fun of these games, to see how they are going to respond, who is going to deliver with a big pitch or hit or good at-bat. You don t always get a hit, but put together a good at-bat. These kids are going through this right now and it s good for their development...i hope they believe that (on team still being in postseason contention.) I believe it. We go into (Friday) and we are playing the teams we need to beat. We didn t win here (in Frederick), but now we have to go down to Salem and win. Tonight s Starters WIL: LHP Cristian Castillo (6-11, 4.20 ERA) vs. SAL: RHP Roniel Raudes (4-7, 4.50 ERA) As far as fast starts to a professional career go, Cristian Castillo has to be near the top of the list inside the Kansas City Royals organization. Castillo signed as a 20-year old out of Mexico in December of 2014, and all he has done in two pro seasons is win two awards for excellence. He was named the Royals Pitcher of the Year for their Dominican Summer League in 2015 when he posted a 2.64 ERA, fanned 58 and walked only 15 in 67.1 innings worked. Last season he was even better, earning Appalachian League Pitcher of the Year honors by going 6-3 with a 3.13 ERA, 73 strikeouts and just 14 free passes in 72 frames. He led the league in innings pitched, strikeouts and WHIP, and was fourth in earned run average. Castillo enjoyed his best stretch of the season from July 29 through August 11 when he yielded just three runs and three hits total over 21 combined frames in three starts. He also appeared in three games in the Liga Mexicana del Pacífico in October. Still, the six-foot, 190-pounder is not ranked among the Royals top 30 prospects by Baseball America, but he is the fifth-best southpaw starting pitcher prospect in the organization according to the publication. He impressed the Royals brass enough to jump both Rookie Idaho Falls and Low-A Lexington in 2017 to begin the season with Advanced-A Wilmington. After being named a CL All-Star this year, the lefty has been in a losing streak over the last month-and-a-half. He has lost his last seven consecutive outings, including his last start at Salem on August 19 against Myrtle Beach when he allowed six earned runs in 4.1 innings of work. He has allowed three earned runs or more in six of his last seven starts after doing so only five times in his first 17 outings. Roniel Raudes is in his first season with Salem and his third in the Boston Red Sox organization. The 19-year-old right-hander is rated the sixth-best prospect in Boston s system according to Baseball America. Last season, the native of Nicaragua pitched for Low-A Greenville and posted an 11-6 record with a 3.65 ERA in 24 starts. He struck out 104 batters in 113 innings while walking just 23. This season against Wilmington, he is 0-2 with a 5.06 ERA, allowing 15 earned runs and 35 hits in 26.2 innings. In his last start against the Blue Rocks on July 20, Raudes suffered the loss despite allowing just two earned runs in 6.2 innings of work. However, having the best overall record in the Carolina League and a prospect-laden roster wasn t enough. The Red Sox finished 2016 with an impressive record and won the first half of the Souther Division with a record. Salem took on Myrtle Beach and was ousted in the semifinals in three games. This year, the Red Sox are managed by second-year skipper Joe Oliver who returns after his successful first year. Like Wilmington s skipper in Jamie Quirk, Oliver was a catcher and was drafted in the 1983 MLB Draft in the second round by the Cincinnati Reds. He was a member of the Reds team that defeated the powerful Oakland Athletics in the 1990 World Series. He went on to spend 13 seasons in the big with the Reds, Brewers, Tigers, Mariners, Pirates, Yankees and Red Sox. He played in nearly 1,100 games and posted a.247 batting average to go along with 102 homers and 476 RBI. After a 13-year hiatus from baseball, Oliver returned and became the manager of the Lowell Spinners in He spent two years with the Short- Season Class A affiliate and led the team to a composite record. He was then promote to Salem in The 2017 Salem squad has a handful of Boston s top prospects. 19-year-old Roniel Raudes is the highest ranked prospect on the team, tabbed as the sixth-best prospect in the Red Sox farm system according to Baseball America. He was named the Red Sox Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2016 and posted an 11-6 record with a solid 3.65 ERA in 24 starts in Low-A Greenville. Offensively, Salem has lost some of the best power hitters in Boston s system due to promotions. Both Michael Chavis and Josh Ockimey were both promoted to Double-A Portland in the second half. Between the two sluggers, they accounted for 28 home runs and 118 RBI in the middle of the lineup for the Red Sox. Other prospects that have received attention by Baseball America that will be featured in Salem in 2017 is Gerson Bautista who has the best fastball in the system. Bautista spent time with the Lowell Spinners a year ago and averaged a strikeout per inning. Behind the plate, Austin Rei is considered to be the best defensive catching prospect and gunned nearly 40% of wouldbe-base-stealers in Greenville last year. Tate Matheny, son of St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny makes the jump from Low-A Greenville after hitting a respectable.277 in 105 games which earned him a selection on the South Atlantic All-Star team. Tate was a fourth-round pick by the Red Sox in 2015 out of Missouri State. Along with the top prospects, Salem has 14 returners in Familiar faces for the Blue Crew are Matt Kent who etched his name in the Salem record books as the lefty tossed 156 innings last year which led the Carolina League and also set a new, single-season high. With the addition to Buies Creek and Down East, Salem has shifted to the Northern Division after playing in the Southern Division. Last season, the Blue Rocks and Red Sox battled 20 times in inter-division play with Salem taking the head-to-head match up The Rocks and Red Sox continue to see a lot of each other as of late. The two teams ended the first half with a four-game series at Frawley Stadium in which the Rocks swept and eliminated the Red Sox from playoff contention. The Rocks and Red Sox are tied in the head-to-head series 12-12, with the Blue Rocks winning four of the last six match-ups.

WORKING HARD ON REPEATING SO HE DOESN T HAVE TO REPEAT: One of Castillo s biggest priorities is consistency, both on the mound and in leading up to taking the hill. He is a meticulous preparer and has been tweaking his approach over his first three seasons. I ve worked a lot on my mechanics because I had a lot of trouble and problems with repeating my delivery, the pitcher said. I think I was so successful (last year) because (of those adjustments) so I was able to control all my pitches. PROUD OF HIS HERITAGE: Castillo has a couple pitchers he points to as inspiration. Near the top of the list is former Phillie and current Ranger Cole Hammels because of the way he goes about his business and how smooth he is. But first and foremost is Fernando Valenzuela. He s Mexican and just represented the country so well. Castillo is proud of his heritage and hopes he can represent his country as well as Valenzuela did. I am always proud to represent my country when I pitch. Here in the U.S. you face a lot of good hitters and talented players every day. But in Mexico, you need to play very well and be the best you can just to get the chance to be able to play here. CLOSE TO HIS CATCHERS: Castillo says he works well with his catchers. We talk a lot before the game to develop a plan so we can execute out on the field. I don t need to shake them off a lot, but sometimes I do and it s part of our plan. I like to work quickly as well to keep (hitters off balance). It helps a lot because you don t give hitters time to think about what pitch I am going to throw. It s all part of the big plan which you have to stick to. SO FAR, SO GOOD: Castillo has been one of the Blue Rocks most consistent starters so far this season. Castillo has been very good, said manager Jamie Quirk. He mixes his pitches really well and hits his spots. It is his first 2015/Royals (DSL) time at this level, and you never know how a kid will respond to that, but he s done a great job. Castillo pitches 2016/Burlington to contact, sporting a.279 batting average against with the bases empty, but he also seems to be at his best in the 2017/Wilmington biggest moments. Opponents are hitting.250 versus the southpaw with runners in scoring position. ALL-STAR: Castillo was so good in the first half he earned an All-Star nod. He ranked fourth in the Carolina League with a 2.80 ERA, posted a 4-3 record and allowed only 22 earned runs in 70.2 innings of work in the first half. He surrendered four earned runs once just once in the opening half, and lasted five or more innings in 11 of his 13 starts. In the All-Star game he was one of four Blue Rocks pitchers to work a scoreless inning. He went to the College World Series as a freshman Notes: Started the season with Lexington Legends (Low-A/South Atlantic League) -In 52 games he hit.323 with four home runs and 21 RBI. Also clubbed 12 doubles and a triple. -Posted a.416 on-base percentage during that span -Hit first-career Adv. A home run on Frederick with a solo homer. Also finished the game with his first three-hit contest as a Blue Rock (3-for-4, R, HR, RBI, SO) 2016 Notes: Spent the season with the Royals (Arizona League/Rookie) and Wilmington Blue Rocks. -Hit.343 with nine doubles, a triple and drove in 24 runs in AZL -Ranked second in the Arizona League in batting average, and third in hits and on-base percentage (.395). -Played in three games with the Blue Rocks and collected three hits in 12 at-bats. They said it: Going to the College World Series was awesome, one of the best experiences of my life. UC Irvine was a great program. They helped me get better every year. It s amazing how much better you can get year-by-year when you look back. That s the goal to continue. When you look back and you weren t better than you were last year, that s a problem. That s what UC Irvine did for me. It s a great school, great facility, and has great coaches. To be able to go the College World Series, which is everyone s dream, lives up to the hype and then some. For anyone that wants to go and check it off their bucket list, I highly suggest it...it s tough (for UC Irvine) to get recruits for some reason. They always want to go to USC or UCLA for some reason. Even with the amazing coaching and facilities at Irvine, getting those amazing prospects isn t as easy. They have to do a good job of recruiting the best players than can. Once they get there it s about creating that style of play that is consistent. If everyone plays to that style, they can be very successful when that happens. They helped me learn to be scrappy, learn to play different positions, and be that type of player so I owe a lot to what I learned there...the field (at UC Irvine) is unbelievable. Nolan Arenado comes, Albert Pujols comes, Skip Schumaker comes and they all take ground balls at our field. They say there is really no big league field that is better. That was one of the biggest draws to me. Mike Guillespe, the head coach there, actually coached my dad when he was in college. He is a legend. My dad told me you are going to learn a lot from him and I did. Continued success for Irvine year in and year out is owed to him and the coaching staff. Keston Hiura, the ninth overall pick (in the 2017 MLB Draft by the Brewers), just came from there this year and he is already killing it in Low-A...Michael Young, who played for my dad, is truly the person I idolized growing up. I tried to emulate him on the field, his swing, his defensive prowess of playing a bunch of different positions, and how he handles himself off the field. Just watching that, he is a great role model. Him and Skip Schumaker, who also played from my dad, are two great role models I ve been able to watch, interact with, text, and work with. It s been a blessing to see these guys and their careers. Now they are both retired but they still stay in contact with me. That s everyone s baseball goal, to be as consistent as possible...i actually know probably more guys here (in Wilmington) than I did at the beginning of the Lexington season so I m super excited. Coach (Ray) Birmingham is a great head coach and knows what he is talking about with hitting. His support staff as well with Buddy Goldsmith, Ken (Jacome), the pitching coach, and Tony Cappuccilli were all great coaches and had great team environment there...(on moving from California to New Mexico) It is definitely different. It was the best place for me to go play baseball. My best friend from high school, Jared Holly, went to New Mexico first. He was a sophomore there my freshman year and he helped me in a lot of ways to make the transition easier...(on transition from catcher to first base.)...i absolutely love it. Catching is rough, I respect those guys for being back there. Those guys grind and put their bodies on the line. Being at first is definitely a lot easier on the body... Absolutely not, I ve never done that before (on hitting for the cycle). I was just super happy to get the win and happy to contribute. (If cycle was in his mind after the triple) A little bit, but not much. I know (triples) are incredibly hard to get and I m not a big triples guy. I was just happy to get it done early and didn t have to worry about it. There s a lot of US pop culture there so that wasn t much different. As far as baseball, there was actually a big difference. There s a lot of Japanese guys there so the style of play, especially the pitching is a lot different. There s a lot more splitters than change ups and I also saw a lot more soft throwing lefties which helped me out a lot... I played football growing up and I actually almost ended up playing football in college instead of baseball. I had a few more opportunities in football than baseball but baseball has always been my passion and it ended up working out... Definitely the fans. We have a good group of fans here and they like to come out and watch. They said it: I definitely think it will be a good adjustment for me. I went through the whole first year struggling a little bit. I know the stadiums, the teams, maybe some of the same players are coming back. I think it gives me a little bit of an edge on other guys in the league. I m excited...honestly I went in there carefree. If I get out, it s supposed to happen because I m the guy from A-Ball so I took it the right way. I just went out there and felt comfortable and enjoyed myself. I honestly had no pressure on myself and that s the way I should play here too which is what I m going to try to do. It was enjoyable... The postgame spread was unbelievable. You get big leaguers buying the spread and it is steak and lobster for dinner which was very awesome. The field was incredible. There was a ton more fans I m not saying we have a bad fan base, but it s a step away from the big leagues and kids are going crazy for you. It was cool to be around older guys who have been there or guys that are close to being there. The league itself was very cool. I met one of my teammates from Virginia, Chris Taylor, he got traded to the Dodgers and we were playing them during the six games I was there and it was good to see him. It s a whole different atmosphere. There s 35-year-old guys pitching to you and you do one thing wrong and they know what that weakness it, they can repeatedly make that pitch so it definitely was a big jump but definitely awesome...it s definitely a big thing (playing near hometown). There s a lot of ups and downs, especially if you get homesick, which I haven t gotten that much in my career so far. It s definitely a blessing to have your family come out.
