1 MILWAUKEE BREWERS (52-47) vs PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (33-61) Saturday, July 22, 2017 Citizens Bank Park 7:05 p.m. EDT Game 95; Home 43 LHP Brent Suter (1-1, 3.09) vs RHP Jeremy Hellickson (6-5, 4.44) LAST NIGHT S ACTION: The Phillies defeated the Milwaukee Brewers, 6-1, at Citizens Bank Park Starter Aaron Nola gave those in attendance a real treat as he went 7.0 innings and allowed only 1 run on 5 hits with 2 walks and 9 strikeouts Philadelphia jumped out in front early, as Cesar Hernandez led off the game with a walk and Freddy Galvis followed with a 2-run home run That would be enough, but for good measure, Philadelphia plated four runs in the 6 th inning, led by a Tommy Joseph 2-run double Pat Neshek (1.0 IP) and Hector Neris (1.0 IP) made scoreless appearances in relief of Nola. POSITIVE TRENDS: Over the last 30 days (24 games, 6/22-current), the Phillies have outscored their opponents (+19) and rank ninth in the majors and sixth among all National League clubs in run differential over that stretch Philadelphia has yielded just 82 runs in that span which is the second-fewest in baseball, behind only the Los Angeles Dodgers (68 runs allowed). STARTING TO FIND IT: Since June 6 (39 G), the Phillies rotation has logged innings, which ranks fourth among all major league clubs in that span, trailing only Boston (251.2 IP, 42 G), Atlanta (239.1 IP, 40 G) and Washington (239.0 IP, 39 G) In those 39 games, starters have failed to complete at least 5.0 innings only two times and have recorded 22 quality starts In that same stretch (since 6/6), Phillies starters have posted nine starts of at least 7.0 IP and two earned runs or fewer, something they did only seven times in their first 55 starts of the season The rotation is on a solid streak at home and have allowed three earned runs or fewer in each of their last 13 starts at CBP (6/17-current, 2.42 ERA) That is the longest streak by a Phils staff at home since the end of last season, when they did so in 14 straight games from September 3 to October 2 (2.54 ERA). ANGELS IN THE OUTFIELD: Philadelphia s outfield has combined for a.264/.325/.440 slash line in 1,229 plate appearances in 2017 after putting up a.242/.311/.366 mark last season Their combined.765 OPS would be the highest mark by a Phillies outfield since the 2011 group posted a.774 OPS They are also seeing 3.99 pitches per plate appearance in 2017, most since a 4.01 mark in 2010 Defensively, they have been one of the strongest units in the majors this season with a.992 fielding percentage that is tops among all ML outfields They also have six defensive runs saved to their credit, third-best among major league outfields, trailing only the Cincinnati Reds (13 DRS) and the New York Mets (7 DRS). MORE LIKE MAIK: Over his last 145 plate appearances (33 G, 6/12-current), Maikel Franco is slashing.275/.338/.519 with 11 2B and 7 HR and 22 RBI Franco s 18 extra-base hits in that span are tied for third-most (WSH s Rendon) among National League third baseman and he trails only COL s Nolan Arenado (20 XBH) and STL s Paul DeJong (19) Additionally, Franco has 13 walks and only 12 strikeouts in that stretch Since June 12, Franco is one of just eight National League players with at least 13 walks but fewer strikeouts in that span: STL s Matt Carpenter (30 BB/16 SO), CIN s Joey Votto (25 BB/16 SO), WSH s Bryce Harper (25 BB/23 SO), PIT s Andrew McCutchen (24 BB, 15 SO), LAD s Justin Turner (24 BB, 9 SO), WSH s Anthony Rendon (20 BB, 17 SO) and WSH s Daniel Murphy (13 BB, 12 SO) All that being said, in that same span, Franco has seemingly still hit into bad luck as evidenced by his.257 batting average on balls in play, 20 percentage points below his career average of.277 from RAGING BULL: Centerfielder Odubel Herrera has tied a team season-high with a walk in each of his last four games (7/17-current) and has also reached base safely in each of his last eight games (7/9- current) In that span, he has scored seven runs, tallied 10 hits (3 1B, 4 2B, 3 HR) and has five walks to six strikeouts, while slashing.323/.417/.742 Herrera entered play on June 1 with a season slash line of.218/.262/.326 in 206 plate appearances over his first 50 games However, Since June 1, Herrera is batting.315 (51-162) with a.355 on-base percentage and.525 slugging percentage over 172 plate appearances and 41 games Herrera leads all Phillies position players in WAR this season. BULLISH ON THE PEN: Since June 26, the Phillies bullpen has posted a major league-best 1.84 ERA (12 ER, 58.2 IP), 0.97 WHIP (17 BB, 40 H) and 2.63 FIP while holding opponents to a ML-best.523 OPS They have successfully stranded all 13 of their inherited runners in that span The unit has lowered their combined season ERA from 4.88 on June 25 to 4.30 entering play tonight. HE GOES, WE GO: Since being activated off the DL on July 17, Cesar Hernandez has reached base safely in each of his four games and has posted a.429 on-base percentage in that stretch Coincidentally, the Phillies have won three of those four games and are averaging 6.5 runs per game (26 R, 4 G) with Hernandez at the top of the lineup. IT S HITTIN SEASON, SON: The Phillies have collected 57 base hits over the last five games (7/16- current), an average of 11.4 per game The 57 knocks mark their most in a five-game period since September 20-24, last season (58 H) and their.320 average over the last five games ranks third among all major league clubs (best: COL,.382 AVG).
