4 This & That NO CHALLENGES ON MOTHER S DAY--The Royals and Mariners made it through Sunday s series finale without going to the replay for any calls... manager Ned Yost ran Kansas City s replay review record to 4-2 with a successful challenge in the seventh inning on Saturday night...the play involved Robinson Cano being called safe at second base on a possible wild pitch from Tim Collins, but upon further review it was determined that second baseman Johnny Giavotella legally blocked the bag while taking the throw from Sal Perez and 2:21 later the call was overturned...it was just the second replay challenge by the Royals in the last 22 games...opposing managers are 4-4 in challenges...to review, each manager gets a challenge and for the first six innings and if he challenges correctly, he ll receive another...calls are defined as either a) Confirmed; b) Stands or C) Overturned. HOZ STINGS BASEBALL OUT WEST--Eric Hosmer returns home after solid trip to the west coast that saw his season average jump 34 points from.286 to he hit.452 during the 7-game journey through San Diego and Seattle, with three doubles, a home run and eighth RBI...he enters tonight sixth in the league in hitting with his.320 mark, tied for third in hits (48) and on top of the leaderboard with 15 doubles...he also possesses a.360 batting average under the lights, which leads all American League hittters...hoz is also tied for fourth with 15 multi-hit games, a category he led the A.L. in with 60 last year. PAREDES PROVIDES WERNER PARK FIRST--Jimmy Paredes made Werner Park history last night with the first-ever cycle in the park that Omaha (AAA) has called home since the 25-year old utility man that the Royals organization acquired off waivers from the Orioles just prior to spring training, started the contest 0-for-2, but then hit a grand slam in the fourth inning to start the cycle in reverse order...he then lashed a two-rbi triple in the sixth, an RBI double in the seventh and RBI single in the eighth...the eight RBI for Paredes were the second most for a Storm Chaser this season (Brett Eibner on April 9 with 9 RBI), and he entered the game with only four RBI in his first 17 games for Omaha...the Storm Chasers wound up 19-1 winners over New Orleans. ESKY ON THE BASES--Alcides Escobar has jumped into a tie for fourth in the American League in thefts with six thefts on the just completed road trip...his five thefts in San Diego were the most in a 3-game series by a Royal since Tom Goodwin swiped a handful of bags on June 26-28, 1995 vs. Cleveland...his stolen base pct. is what is the headline grabber, as Esky has made good on 40 of his last 41 attempts dating back to a caught stealing on September 9, the 97.6% success rate is the best in baseball in that span and the lone caught occurred on April 9 against Tampa Bay..prior to that, he had pilfered 30 in a row. SPEED THRILLS--The Royals were the Major League leader in stolen bases last year and they ve jumped back into the A.L. theft race on the last trip by pilfering seven bags...kansas City has moved up to fourth in the league with 27 on the year. CROW STREAKING AGAIN--For the third time in four seasons, Aaron Crow is opening the campaign with a significant run of games in which he hasn t been charged with an earned run...sunday s scoreless inning in Seattle was his 17th consecutive appearance in which he has not allowed an earnie, tying Joakim Soria (2008) for the second longest appearance streak in franchise history...he is now one scoreless appearance shy of tying teammate Louis Coleman s mark of 18 in Crow also had a streak of 13 in a row in his rookie and All-Star year of 2011 and a 9-gamer last year...aaron has a run of 15.0 innings with Sunday s scoreless frame, tying his career-best of 15.0 to start a year in SAVE CHANCES SCARCE--Greg Holland tossed a perfect ninth inning on Sunday in Seattle for his ninth save in 10 tries this year, but only his fourth opportunity in KC s last 21 games...he has made good on 49 of his last 51 tries (96%), which is tops among the eight closers who have at least 35 saves in that span...since May 30, 2013, Holland has 5 more saves than any other pitcher in baseball (Craig Kimbrel - 44) and has allowed just 8 earned runs in 65.0 innings for a 1.11 ERA, holding opposing hitters to a.167 average...he s also recorded 98 strikeouts in those 65.0 innings, for an A.L.-best strikeouts per 9.0 IP. NED IN HIS FOURTH FULL SEASON--The 16th full-time manager in franchise history, Ned Yost recorded his 300th win as the KC skipper last Wednesday in San Diego, and is now since he was named to his position on May 13, he recently passed John Wathan (287) and Hal McRae (286) to move into fourth on KC s all-time wins list...he is 15 wins shy of catching Tony Muser, who is third with 317 victories...yost, who managed six seasons in Milwaukee ( ), is all-time as a Major League skipper.
