1 Trenton Thunder Portland Sea Dogs (Red Sox) LHP Jeremy Bleich (2-2, 5.40) vs. RHP Mike Augliera (2-1, 3.79) Saturday, April 26, :00 PM Game 22 of 142 Hadlock Field Portland, ME Radio: 91.3 FM (WTSR), 1490 AM (WBCB) Adam Giardino LAST GAME: PORTLAND, ME In a game that saw the Trenton Thunder and Portland Sea Dogs trade punches from the opening bell (the ballgame was tied 4-4 after the first inning), the Thunder scored four times in the ninth inning to break a tie and win Tied in the top of the 9 th inning, Trenton loaded the bases with three walks to the first four batters, and Taylor Dugas pinch-hit for Yeral Sanchez. With one out and the infield pulled in, Dugas was hit on the second pitch of the plate appearance against newly-inserted righty Michael Olmstead. In a ballgame that featured a total of 24 runs on 29 hits, the winning run scored on a hit-by-pitch. Two batters later, Ali Castillo stood-in with the bases loaded and two outs and drew the count 3-0 against Olmstead. After taking a couple of strikes, Castillo lined a double towards the Maine Monster at Hadlock Field for a three-run double to give Trenton a into the bottom of the 9 th. Branden Pinder recorded an out to strand two runners in the 8 th inning and was the pitcher of record for Trenton in the game which took 3:27 in front of 5,037 fans. Pinder moves to 2-0 on the season and has now thrown 10.0 scoreless innings to begin the season. Kyle Roller connected for two homeruns on his perfect evening at the plate- the second of which completed back-to-back homeruns in the 5 th inning- and now has seven homeruns in 10 games this season. Roller, who also has six homers in his last seven games, walked twice and was hit by a pitch to reach all five times at-bat in the ballgame. THUNDER CLAPS: THUNDEROUS OFFENSE: Trenton set a season-high with 14 runs scored in Friday s contest against Portland. The team s previous high was April 6 th vs. New Hampshire when Trenton exploded for 11 runs in the 4 th inning of an 11-5 win over the Fisher Cats. The Thunder jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the 1 st inning with a season-high 4 firstinning runs. In Friday s game, Trenton also set a season-high for home runs in a game with three, and Rob Segedin and Kyle Roller connecting for homers in the 5 th inning was the first time Trenton went back-to-back on the season. It was the third time in the first 21 games Trenton scored 10+ runs (3-0) and the second time their pitching allowed 10+ (1-1). AMONG THE BEST: Since being transferred to Trenton from Short Season-A Staten Island on April 13 th, Kyle Roller has batted.389 (14-for-36) with 11 of his 14 hits going for extra bases (4 2B, 7 HR). This gives Roller a slugging percentage which leads Joey Gallo (1.026, Myrtle Beach) and Allan Dykstra (.917, Lehigh Valley) for tops in all of MiLB in that time. The next closest in the Eastern League in that time is Altoona s Stetson Allie (.833). PLAYING THEM CLOSELY: 11 of the last 15 games for the Thunder have been tight to the finish. Trenton is 10-5 in their last 15 games-- 11 of which have all been decided by two runs or fewer. The first six games of the season were decided by an average of 5.5 runs, and only one was by 2 runs or fewer. GETTING STREAKY: Ben Gamel, Rob Segedin and Taylor Dugas each had double-digit on-base streaks entering play Friday. Gamel had reached base safely in 19 straight contests, but in game where his teammates scored 14 runs on 13 hits, Gamel went 0-for-6 and saw his streak come to an end. The 19-game streak is tied for the longest in the Eastern League this season. Segedin has reached in 12 straight and Dugas extended his to 13 consecutive games with a pinchhit HBP in the 9 th inning which scored the go-ahead run for Trenton in the 9 th inning of a game. RIGHT WHERE HE LEFT OFF: Third baseman Rob Segedin has gone 7-for-18 (.389), 4 BB (.500 OBP) over the last three games with a HR and five runs driven in since missing eight of the previous nine games for the Thunder. PLAYING THEM QUICKLY: Trenton has wasted no time in their ballgames this season. In 21 games, only four have been played in more than 3:00. The exception to this rule came Friday night in Portland when the two teams combined for 24 runs on 29 hits in 3:27. Even with Friday night s contest, that means that 17-of-21 have been under three hours. STARTING TO COME AROUND: Trenton s starting pitchers posted a 6.25 ERA (28 ER in 40.1 IP) through their first eight games of the season. Before Thursday vs. Akron 6-of-10 Trenton scheduled starters tossed quality starts (6.0+ IP, 3 ER or fewer) and had posted a 1.61 ERA (10 ER in 56.0 IP). Not included in those numbers is reliever Charley Short who made a spot-start Saturday 4/19 vs. Erie and allowed 3 ER in 2.0 IP. In the last two games however, Joel De La Cruz and Matt Tracy have allowed 11 R (11 ER) on 18 H in 9.1 IP good for a ERA and.391 BAA. CHASING HISTORY: Tony Franklin enters the 2014 season needing 22 regular season wins to eclipse Dave Machamer for first place in all-time Eastern League managerial wins since 1963 (when the league was officially recognized as a Double-A league). Franklin enters his 8 th consecutive season with the Thunder with 542 career regular season wins.
