Jakob Junis, who has been haunted by the long ball all season, allowed his big league leading 23rd and 24th as his season record fell to 5-10 with his seventh consecutive setback...the Royals came out quick against Tribe starter Corey Kluber, with Whit Merrifield opening the first with a home run, followed by an RBI single from Sal Perez...unfortunately, the next time KC scored a run, Cleveland had put nine on the board to stake Kluber to his 12th win...as for Lindor, he has now hit seven home runs and driven in 23 in 22 career games in The K...the loss was Kansas City s fourth in a row and 15th in the last 18 games... the Royals are now 34 games below.500 for the first time since September 6, 2009 (51-85). GOOD START AT LEAST--Yes, the Royals fell for a fourth straight time, but the scoring started as early as possible with Whit Merrifield opening the home half of the first with his first leadoff home run of the year...taking Corey Kluber s third pitch of the night for a 405-foot ride marked the fourth game-opening blast in Merrifield s career and first for KC since Whit went big fly last August 24 here against the Rockies. JUNIS SLIDE CONTINUES--After starting 2018 with a promising 5-3 record, second-year man Jakob Junis has hit a speed bump, falling for a seventh consecutive start with last night s 9-3 defeat...he is now one setback shy of tying the team mark held by both Kyle Davies (2011) and Jeff Suppan (2002), who each lost eight straight assignments...once again it was the long ball that led to the rugged evening, as Junis allowed a grand slam and three-run homer to Francisco Lindor, upping his big league leading total to 24 home runs surrendered, four more than the Rangers Bartolo Colon and Cole Hamels. JUNE DROUGHT RUNS INTO JULY--The Royals were hoping to put the rugged month of June behind them, but instead extended its club record streak of games without collecting at least 10 hits to 24 in a row by getting eighth hits in last night s loss...this is the fifth longest such streak in the American League since data became available in 1908, with Kansas City s A s the most recent club to experience this with a 25-gamer in the 1910 Senators (28), 1908 and 1954 Philadelphia A s (27 and 25, respectively) are the only other clubs with longer droughts...counting last night, the Royals have scored four or fewer runs in 23 of the last 24 games, which included a streak of 19 in a row that was halted last Wednesday with a 5-4 win in Milwaukee...KC has hit only.191 as a unit (172-for-902) since June 1. FOX ON SATURDAY--The middle game of the weekend set with the Red Sox will be seen in 30% of the country via the FOX Network...Kenny Albert, Kansas Citian David Cone, A.J. BACK TO WORK WITH THE CENTRAL--The Royals returned to work within its division last night with a loss in the opener of this three-game set against the Tribe...it kicked off a stretch in which 15 of 18 games will be contested against its own Central Division, where the Royals are this year, including an 8-5 record in their last 13 intradivision contests...the Royals spent the entire month of June and first day of July playing only the Western Division when competing against the American League, while the interleague slate called for two vs. Cincinnati and two against Milwaukee...things didn t go well against the West, with the Royals going 4-19 during the 23-game stretch and finishing with a 7-26 mark on the year and KC has already completed play against the Western Division... Kansas City has gone just 3-12 vs. the East and has Boston in here this weekend, with the Royals 1-2 from earlier work...kc s work against the National League is 3-6, with the NL Central the focus this season. WHERE S WHIT???--Kansas City utility man extraordinaire Whit Merrifield was back at his familiar post at second base for each of the last three games...now in his third big league season, Merrifield s name is likely to be somewhere near the top of the batting order when healthy, but where he ll play on a given day could be virtually anywhere on the diamond...since the first of June, he has started at second base (13 games), in center field (7 times), right field (3 times), at first base (twice) and as the DH (twice)...on the year, he s played four different defensive positions, including his normal location of second base (53 games), center field (12 games), first base (5 games) and right field (8 games)...he has played left field and third base in previous seasons, while also DH ing five times this year.
