4 This & That TIME CHANGE IN MINNESOTA--Major League Baseball announced yesterday that the Royals-Twins game on Saturday, August 4 will feature at 6:35 p.m. (CT) first-pitch as Minnesota will hold a pre-game ceremony to elect pitcher Johan Santana in the club s Hall of Fame...the contest was originally slated for a 6:10 p.m. start, while the other two games of the series on Friday, August 3 (7:10) and Sunday, August 5 (1:10) will remain the same. KEEPING HIS WHITS ABOUT HIM--Despite losing his hitting streak Wednesday in Minneapolis, Whit Merrifield has continued to be a catalyst in the Royals offense, going 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored last night...since June 25, Merrifield has reached base in 15 of 16 games, hitting safely in 14 of them, while batting.409/.452/.561 (27-for-66) with seven doubles, a homer and 10 runs scored...his run has helped him raise his season average above.300 for the first time this year, checking in today at he s collected two hits or more nine times in his last 16 contests, which included a career-best five hits against the Red Sox last Sunday afternoon...since the start of 2017, his 77 multi-hit games rank seventh in the American League...he s also the only player in the Majors with 50+ doubles (61) and 50+ steals (50) since the beginning of last season. DIVISIONAL WORK--Kansas City is in the midst of a stretch where it will play 21 of 28 games against AL Central competition, including a current stretch of 12 in a row that is dissected evenly by the All-Star break...the Royals are 1-3 on the current road trip through their first stops of the season in Minnesota and Chicago and this year overall within the Central...KC spent the entire month of June and first day of July playing only the Western Division when competing against the American League, while the interleague slate called for two vs. Cincinnati and two against Milwaukee...things didn t go well against the American League West, with the Royals going 4-19 during a 23-game stretch in June and finishing with a 7-26 mark on the year and KC has already completed play against the Western Division...the Royals are just 3-15 vs. the East to this point, winning once in Boston, once in Baltimore and once at home against the Yankees, while being swept in Toronto (0-3) and at home by the Red Sox (0-3) and Tampa Bay (0-3)...the Royals are 3-6 against the National League, with the NL Central the focus this season. DUPER DUPED AGAIN--For the second time on this road trip, replay guru Bill Duplissea misfired on a challenge last night when he asked New York to take a look at a play in the fifth inning where it appeared Ryan LaMarre had come off the bag at second after his leadoff hit...however, after a 1-minute, 21-second delay, MLB upheld the original call, ruling against Duper for the sixth time in 25 challenges this season (19-for-25)...he s now posted a 76.0% success rate, which is still tops in the Majors per numbers released yesterday, ahead of the Yankees (70.8%), San Francisco (70.6%) and Philadelphia (70.4%), the only other clubs above 70% for the year...dupe has made good on 67% of his challenges in his career (118-for-176), which ranks among the best, including a Major League best 71% success rate over the last three seasons (71-for-100). GORDO STILL BEING TESTED--Despite being the most prolific outfielder in assists since the start of 2010, baserunners continue to test Alex Gordon, who nabbed Logan Morrison at third base on Tuesday night at Target Field...it was Gordo s eighth outfield assist of the season, which is good for third in the AL and one behind league leaders Mitch Haniger and Leonys Martin and 90th since moving to the outfield from third base midway through his career total is two ahead of Colorado s Gerardo Parra (88) for the most in the Major Leagues since the start of 2010, while it s also the second-most in Royals history, behind only Amos Otis (116). WHERE S WHIT???--Kansas City utility man extraordinaire Whit Merrifield was back in his customary second base spot last night, after making the start in center field on Wednesday...now in his third big league season, Merrifield s name is likely to be somewhere near the top of the batting order, but where he ll play on a given day could be virtually anywhere on the diamond...since the first of June, he has started at second base (20 games), in center field (9 times), right field (3 times), at first base (twice) and as the DH (twice)...on the year, he s played four different defensive positions, including his normal location of second base (60 games), center field (14 games), first base (5 games) and right field (8 games)...he has played left field and third base in previous seasons, while also DH ing five times this year. MATIAS TO PLAY IN FUTURES GAME--Kansas City s minor league home run sensation, Seuly Matias, was announced last week as a member of the World Team for the 2018 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game, which will be played at 4:00 p.m. (EDT) Sunday at Nationals Park in Washington...Matias, 19, hit his minor league-leading 26th home run for Lexington (A) last Sunday, two more than Roberto Ramos, who is with Colorado s Double-A affiliate, Hartford...the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game, which is now in its 20th year, features the top Minor League prospects competing in a nine-inning contest as part of All-Star Sunday...the U.S. Team leads the all-time series, Major League Baseball, in conjunction with MLB.com, Baseball America and the 30 Major League Clubs, selected the 25 players currently on each team...each Major League organization is represented and players from all full-season Minor Leagues were eligible to be selected. ROYALS AND TIGERS IN OMAHA IN 19--Commissioner Rob Manfred was in Omaha on June 21 to announce that the Royals and Detroit Tigers will play a regular season game in TD Ameritrade Park next June 13 to celebrate the start of the 2019 College World Series...the announcement made in conjunction with the NCAA, was attended by Royals General Manager Dayton Moore, his counterpart with the Tigers, Al Avila, Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert, the President/CEO of the Omaha Storm Chasers Gary Green and was emceed by ESPN s Karl Ravech...the game will be the completion of a three-game home series for the Royals where the June games will be played in Kauffman Stadium before taking the finale to Omaha...ESPN will televise the prime-time contest nationally. KC S TOP SKIPPER--The winningest manager in franchise history, Ned Yost recorded his 1,100th career win on May 18 vs. the Yankees and has since upped that career total to 1,112, which is good for seventh on the all-time list among active skippers, while Detroit s Ron Gardenhire is next in the eighth spot with 1,108 career wins...ned has a regular season record at the helm for the Royals, blowing past Whitey Herzog s previous team mark of 410 wins ( )...Yost is the 16th full-time manager in franchise history and is sixth among active managers in games (2,313)...his postseason winning pct. of.710 (22-9) is tops among all managers in history who have worked at least 20 playoff games...this is his second stint as a big league manager after nearly six full campaigns at the helm for the Milwaukee Brewers ( )...he compiled a record with the Brew Crew including a mark in his last two seasons...yost, a catcher during his playing days, began his coaching career in the Atlanta organization, including 12 straight seasons on Bobby Cox s big league staff ( ). vs. White Sox (2018) vs. White Sox (career) On Road (career) Lopez (career) Giolito (career) Player AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI Almonte Bonifacio Butera Dozier Duda Escobar Gordon Merrifield Mondesi Moustakas Orlando Perez Starting Pitchers Breakdown Total KC Avg.
