NEWSDAY Muhammad Wilkerson explains his thoughts about contract situation (Kimberley A. Martin) Newsday Daily Clips Cont. LINDEN, N.J. - Standout players should be taken care of by their teams. At least, that's how Muhammad Wilkerson sees it. Speaking for the first time since late last season, the star defensive end shared his thoughts on his current estrangement from the Jets and his ongoing quest for a long-term deal. "I just thought, you work hard on the field, do what you've got to do on and off the field, and that's how you're supposed to get rewarded," Wilkerson said last night during his "Strikes for Scholarships" charity event at Jersey Lanes bowling alley. Wilkerson has been a no-show at the Jets' facility throughout the offseason because of frustration about his contract situation, going so far as to skip the offseason conditioning program and voluntary organized team activities. He's scheduled to make $6.999 million in 2015 but he and his agent, Chad Wiestling, have been seeking a long-term deal since last season. Wilkerson is expected to attend next week's three-day mandatory minicamp, but when asked for a definitive answer, he played coy. "I guess we'll see," said the native of Linden, New Jersey, a first-round pick in "That's something my agent and I will discuss this weekend." Asked if he's upset that the Jets haven't yet signed him long-term, Wilkerson said: "It's a business at the end of the day, and all I can do is keep doing what I'm doing: working out, trying to stay in shape and getting ready for the season." But he's still holding out hope. "I guess it takes a long time,'' he said. "This is new to me. But hopefully, something will get done soon." Wilkerson also said he's "not at all" worried about being traded. "Of course, I'm a New Jersey guy, I would want to be here," he said. "But... if I was to get traded, there's nothing I can do about that. It's a business." ESPN NEW YORK Muhammad Wilkerson addresses contract situation with Jets (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York P a g e

LINDEN, N.J. -- New York Jets defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson, who skipped the voluntary portion of the offseason in the midst of a contract dispute, is poised to return to the team for its mandatory minicamp next week. Wilkerson, addressing his contract situation for the first time since December, said Friday night that he will make a decision over the weekend on whether to attend the minicamp. Nevertheless, there are strong indications he will be there. "It's a business; I guess it takes a long time," Wilkerson said of a long-term contract extension. "This is new to me. But, hopefully, something will get done soon." Talks are moving slowly. The Jets say they want to lock up Wilkerson, but the two sides have talked only sporadically. Wilkerson, entering the final year of his contract, is due to make $6.97 million -- the amount of his fifth-year option. "I just thought, you work hard on the field and do what you have to do on and off the field, and that's how you're supposed to get rewarded," said Wilkerson, who spoke to reporters at his charity bowling event in his hometown. Wilkerson declined to explain why he has been a no-show for two months. He took a matter-of-fact tone, refusing to acknowledge he's upset. At the same time, he didn't seem particularly optimistic about a new deal. The Jets gained leverage by drafting defensive end Leonard Williams with the sixth overall pick. Wilkerson said he has nothing against Williams, adding, "He was the best available pick. I definitely look forward to working with him and playing with him in the trenches." Wilkerson said he was aware of the trade rumors before and during the draft. He said the prospect of getting trade -- albeit unlikely -- doesn't faze him. "Not at all," he said. "If I was to get traded... of course, I'm a New Jersey guy, I want to be here. But if that's the case, if I were to get traded, there's nothing I can do about it." Wilkerson has been working out with personal trainers in Atlanta and Maryland. He has kept in touch with teammates, going over play and defensive schemes with them. The Jets are installing a new system under coach Todd Bowles. Cover your eyes: An update on the Jets 2014 draft class (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York draft-class One year later, the Idzik 12 still has the look of a bad NFL draft. It was supposed to be a watershed draft for the New York Jets, a 12-player haul that would replenish an eroded talent base, but the grim reality is that only one of the 12 picks will be a starter in 2015 and only two, maybe three are locks to make the team. Eight remain on the roster. It's one of the reasons why John Idzik is working in Jacksonville and why the Jets have a new front office and scouting department. 3 P a g e

Anyway, let's take a look at the Idzik 12. Warning -- This review contains graphic material that could be harmful to impressionable fans: Safety Calvin Pryor (No. 1 pick, 18th overall)-- He will start at strong safety, his natural position, and that should mean better results. Because of an ill-conceived secondary, he was forced last season to play 523 snaps at free safety, only 88 at strong safety, according to ESPN Stats & Information -- and he looked uncomfortable. Tight end Jace Amaro (No. 2, 49th) -- The new coaching staff won't try to make him something he's not. He'll be an H-Back, not a traditional, in-line tight end. Rex Ryan's least favorite former player has a lot to prove. With six drops in only 53 targets, he had the second-highest drop percentage in the league. Cornerback Dexter McDougle (No. 3, 80th) -- He has missed almost two full seasons because of injuries, so we're talking about some serious rust. He was only recently cleared for team drills. McDougle has some talent, but cornerback is a crowded position. At best, he could be the No. 4 corner. Wide receiver Jalen Saunders (No. 4, 104th) -- He'll be remembered as one of the Jets' worst picks in recent memory. He showed nothing as a receiver, muffed a couple of punts, annoyed the coaches with his attitude and was released only a month into the season. He's currently with the New Orleans Saints. Wide receiver Shaquelle Evans (No. 4a, 115th) -- After missing last season due to shoulder surgery, a healthy Evans has flashed some potential on the practice field. Problem is, he'll be buried on a crowded depth chart in training camp and may not get many chances. Guard Dakota Dozier (No. 4b, 137th) -- He was an overdrafted, small-school player who basically took a rookie red-shirt season. The Jets have a lot of bodies at guard, so they're giving Dozier some reps at center. Versatility could be his meal ticket. Right now, he's facing an uphill battle to make the team. Linebacker Jeremiah George (No. 5, 154th) -- Idzik drafted a 5-foot-11 linebacker for a coach (Ryan) who likes big linebackers. And people wonder why we say there was a disconnect between the two men. Fittingly, George plays for Idzik's current employer, the Jacksonville Jaguars. Cornerback Brandon Dixon (No. 6, 195th) -- This was a nice, late-round find, but they cut him in training camp and he landed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he averaged 10 snaps per game. He probably would've started for the cornerback-needy Jets. Wide receiver Quincy Enunwa (No. 6a, 209th) -- He looks the part, all right. He's a chiseled 6-foot-2, 225 pounds, but he's too inconsistent to be considered a serious threat to crack the top five at receiver. He's getting a lot of work, which can only help. He'll have to make a significant jump in training camp to make the team. Linebacker IK Enemkpali (No. 6b, 210th) -- Like many of his fellow Class of '14 teammates, Enemkpali will need to do something in training camp to make him stand out from the more experienced competition at his position. Advice: Kick butt on special teams. Quarterback Tajh Boyd (No. 6c, 213th) -- This was a Rex Ryan special, proof he should stick to evaluating defensive players. Boyd was painful to watch, got cut and ended up in the FXFL. Currently, he's hanging by a thread on the bottom of the Pittsburgh Steelers' roster. Linebacker Trevor Reilly (No. 7, 233rd) -- Finally, a good draft pick. Reilly is a smart, hard-nosed player who made a mark on special teams. Every team needs a couple of guys like Reilly, who is backing up Calvin Pace at the strong-outside position. 4 P a g e

NEW YORK POST Jets Wilkerson hopeful about deal, but warns it s a business (Brian Costello) New York Post Daily Clips Cont. Muhammad Wilkerson spent Friday night knocking down bowling pins for charity dollars. Now, he s hoping the Jets will come through with some new contract dollars. Wilkerson, who has spent the spring away from the team s workouts as he awaits a new deal, said he remains hopeful a long-term deal will get done with the Jets. It s a business at the end of the day and all I can do is keep doing what I m doing, working out and staying in shape and get ready for the season, Wilkerson said at the bowling event in his hometown of Linden, N.J. This is new to me. Hopefully something will get done soon. Wilkerson is under contract for this year, scheduled to make $6.96 million. He has been seeking a new contract since last year. New general manager Mike Maccagnan has said signing Wilkerson to a long-term extension is a priority, but so far no deal has gotten done. Wilkerson has skipped all of the Jets voluntary workouts and organized team activities (OTAs). Next week will be the first mandatory activity of the offseason when the team holds its three-day minicamp. A source told The Post s Steve Serby this week that Wilkerson will attend, but he was unwilling to reveal his plans on Friday. I guess we ll see, Wilkerson said. That s something my agent and I will discuss this weekend. He s here this weekend for my events, tonight and tomorrow for my football camp. That decision will be made some time this weekend. Wilkerson held his Strikes for Scholarships event to raise money for scholarships he gives to Union County students. On Saturday, he will conduct a free football camp in Linden. All Wilkerson would say about skipping OTAs is it is a decision he and his agent made. There has been speculation the Jets might trade Wilkerson both before the draft and after they selected defensive lineman Leonard Williams in the first round. Wilkerson said he woke up one morning and saw those reports on TV. He is not worried about a trade happening, though. Not at all. If I was to get traded, of course I m a New Jersey guy, I want to be here, Wilkerson said. If I was to get traded, there s nothing I can do about it. It s a business. Wilkerson would not say he is upset with the snail s pace of negotiations, but clearly sounds hurt the Jets have not figured out a way to get something done. I just thought you work hard on the field, Wilkerson said, do what you got to do on and off the field and that s how you re supposed to get rewarded. NJ ADVANCE MEDIA Jets Mo Wilkerson not at all worried about trade, looking forward to playing with Leonard Williams (Darryl Slater) 5 P a g e

NJ Advance Media LINDEN While breaking his public silence Friday, and saying he's not sure if he'll attend the Jets' mandatory minicamp next week, defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson also made it clear he isn't concerned about a potential trade. Wilkerson wants a new, long-term contract. He skipped the Jets' voluntary workouts and might skip minicamp. He is on the verge of a potential contract holdout. The Jets have fielded trade offers for Wilkerson, one of their biggest stars. But general manager Mike Maccagnan has said multiple times that he is not actively looking to deal Wilkerson. Maccagnan has also said he intends to retain Wilkerson. (At the right price, of course.) It remains unclear when or if the Jets and Wilkerson's agent, Chad Wiestling, will be able to work out a contract. In 2013, the Jets traded cornerback Darrelle Revis after he went through multiple, contentious contract disputes with them. But Wilkerson isn't worried about that happening to him. "Not at all," he said at his charity bowling event in his hometown of Linden. "If I were to get traded, of course, I'm a New Jersey guy and I want to be here. But if that were the case and if I were to get traded, there's nothing I can do about that. It's a business." Wilkerson said he saw the news on television in April about teams inquiring with the Jets about a trade for him. "I guess that's just part of the business," Wilkerson said. "I wasn't worried about that. I can only control the things I can control. Me and my agent are going to discuss things and try to see how we can move forward." Wilkerson's future with the Jets became an even more interesting question after they drafted defensive end Leonard Williams sixth overall. Wilkerson welcomed Williams to the team on Instagram when he was drafted, and Wilkerson said Friday that he's pleased Williams is on the team. "As you all know, I'm sure, I welcomed him to the team through Instagram," Wilkerson said. "He was the best available pick. I'm definitely looking forward to working with him and playing with him in the trenches." Muhammad Wilkerson says he s not sure if he ll attend Jets mandatory minicamp 2 (Darryl Slater) NJ Advanced Media LINDEN Defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson said Friday he's not sure if he will attend the Jets' mandatory minicamp next week. "I guess we'll see," Wilkerson said. "That's something my agent and I will discuss this weekend. That decision will be made sometime this weekend." What does Wilkerson's attendance, or lack thereof, at minicamp depend on? Wilkerson wouldn't say. 6 P a g e

"It's just a decision that's going to be made between me and my agent," Wilkerson said. "We'll talk about it." He also declined to say why he didn't show up for the Jets' voluntary workouts. "It's just a decision that me and my agent made," he said. "I've decided to go about things how I feel is the right way." But he did say this about his contract situation, as he seeks a new, long-term deal: "I just thought you work hard on the field, do what you've got to do on and off the field, and that's how you're supposed to get rewarded." When asked if he's upset that a deal hasn't gotten done, or about the slow pace of these proceedings, Wilkerson mostly offered a standard line. "It's a business at the end of the day," he said. "All I can do is just keep doing what I'm doing, working out, trying to stay in shape and get ready for the season. I guess it takes a long time [to get a contract done]. This is new to me, but hopefully something will get done soon. I saw other guys that were in this type of situation, so it's not eye-opening to me, but I figure I'm just like every other player. I'm pretty sure they know at some point in time in their career, they're going to be in this situation." Wilkerson, who hadn't addressed reporters at all this offseason and last gave an interview in December, spoke Friday night at his charity's bowling event in his hometown of Linden. On Thursday, Wilkerson's agent, Chad Wiestling, said he and Wilkerson had yet to decide whether Wilkerson would attend the Jets' three-day mandatory minicamp next week, Tuesday through Thursday. If Wilkerson skipped all three days, he would be fined more than $72,000, according to the collective bargaining agreement. Wilkerson said Wiestling is in New Jersey this weekend for the bowling event, as well as for Wilkerson's annual youth football camp Saturday in Linden. Wilkerson skipped the Jets' voluntary workouts, which began in early April. But starting next week, participation in workouts and practices is mandatory. Wilkerson is entering the final year of his rookie deal. He is set to make $6.969 million this season, the fifth-year option figure in his deal. That's far less than his skills warrant. On Wednesday, Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan told NJ Advance Media that he wasn't sure if Wilkerson would attend minicamp. That echoed what Jets coach Todd Bowles said earlier Wednesday. Wilkerson has been working out on his own while the Jets participate in voluntary workouts. He said he's feeling good, and has been keeping in touch with his teammates. He looked leaner than usual Friday. "I'm good," Wilkerson. "I've been staying in shape, working out, doing what I'm supposed to do. I actually see some of the guys outside [of the Jets' complex]. There's some type of communication. It's not like I'm just somewhere else and I don't speak to the guys." Wilkerson has a copy of the Jets' defensive playbook, which is stored on an ipad. "I've sat down with some guys and kind of went over some plays, so I know about the scheme," he said. "I know the things that we're trying to get done. That's not an issue." Wilkerson also said the turf toe injury that bugged him near the end of last season is no longer a problem. After Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan got a new contract last week, with $33.8 million in guaranteed pay, Wilkerson simply tweeted: "Yup. I see how this works." 7 P a g e

Wilkerson could command about $40 million in guaranteed money. Based on what Maccagnan said Wednesday, it seems things are moving slowly with Wilkerson's contract negotiations. But Maccagnan has publicly said he wants to keep Wilkerson. Of course, the price matters. Wilkerson's charity, the T.E.A.M. 96 Foundation, hosted the bowling event (Strikes for Scholarships) on Friday to raise money for the foundation's scholarships, which are awarded to Union County high school students. This month, the foundation will award more than $15,000 to students from five high schools. Jets help girl ask autistic fan to prom (Dom Cosentino) NJ Advance Media Here's something nice: Several Jets players assisted a Long Island girl with a prom proposal to an autistic classmate who happens to be a yooge Jets fan. The girl, Sarah Kardonsky, and the boy, Michael Pagano, wound up on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" on Thursday, where head coach Todd Bowles and a handful of players offered them a video salute, and the Jets provided some swag, including an autographed helmet. The actual proposal happened back in March, and the full backstory gets explained in video clip below. Spoiler alert: Pagano said yes to Kardonsky's proposal, and the pair plan to attend the Division Avenue High School of Levittown, N.Y.'s prom next week. Pagano is also pretty fired about everything that's gone down. Good on him, good on Kardonsky, and good on the Jets. Have a blast, you crazy kids. Jets players considering future as TV analysts say they won t be muffled like they are now (Darryl Slater) NJ Advance Media January 21, ml MOUNT LAUREL Lasting 10 seasons in the NFL means many things. It means you're more successful than almost everybody who has ever pulled on a football helmet. It probably means you're richer than you ever imagined. It also means you still have most of your adult life left and lots of questions about what to do with that time. This week, three Jets players began planning for the future by participating in the NFL's broadcast boot camp training sessions at NFL Films headquarters: offensive guard Willie Colon, cornerback Antonio Cromartie, and defensive lineman Leger Douzable. Colon and Cromartie are preparing for Year 10 in the NFL. Colon is 32 years old, Cromartie 31. Douzable, 29, is getting ready for his eighth year. They all still love football, but know they need to think about what's next. And what's next, if they get into television analyst work, is a chance to speak more freely in a public forum than they can now. "For me, a bored Willie Colon is a bad Willie Colon," Colon said, explaining why he is considering broadcast work in retirement. 8 P a g e

Based on what Colon said this week at broadcast boot camp, viewers won't be bored watching him. And for veteran players like Colon, becoming an analyst fulfills a desire to finally have their unfiltered, nuanced thoughts heard and to show a truer version of themselves. "I think there's somewhat a miseducated platform that's going on about what players have been through and how we really feel about topics," Colon said during an interview at the boot camp. "I think even when we talk to you guys [reporters], we're kind of muffled on a lot of things that we can't say and we should say and we shouldn't say. I think sometimes, I ruffle that line. You guys know me. I shoot it straight. It's how I feel. If we suck, I'll tell you we suck. If we're doing great, then we deserve a pat on the back. "I think there are so many type of issues that from the beginning, even before we talk to you guys [reporters], that we're not allowed to say this, we're not allowed to talk about the Michael Sam situation. But we have opinions. A lot of us did graduate from college. We have educated opinions, and I feel like now that you get into a forum like this [broadcasting], it's time to kind of let loose a little bit, and not feel like you're being muffled and not feel like I don't want to put the team in jeopardy. I think if you have an educated approach and your honest opinion about whatever you're saying, it gives you a chance to be human, so people get to know your personality. It allows us to be us." It's no great secret that NFL teams, through their public relations departments, attempt to control the message coming out of the locker room. Cromartie agreed that players often feel like they can't express their most candid opinions. "The only thing you're trying to do is make sure you try to say the right things and not put yourself in harm's way," he said. If Cromartie gets into broadcasting, he plans to open up more. He wants to provide context to current players' situations, by helping viewers understand, from his experiences, "what has happened in team meeting rooms where guys may not trust other guys, or guys may not trust the coaches. You understand that, because you've been through that." Colon understands how teams like the Jets view this muffling of players' opinions: The organization is simply trying to protect the players from themselves. "I think as a player in the organization, you never want to step over issues that you can't outright defend, especially if you're not educated enough about it," Colon said. "I think the PR staff tries to do their best job of kind of keeping the bumpers on us, so we're not all over the place, and we're constantly putting our foot in our mouth, and we're constantly looking bad on social media, or on TV, we look like fools. "Their job is to kind of keep us in one pool so that: 'Hey, if you want to talk about it, know what you're talking about, but don't put the team and the organization in a situation where it just looks ugly.' I think our PR staff does their best job of keeping guys a little muffled and let them know that: 'Hey, if you talk on social issues like gays, you're going to have to defend it, and you're going to have to be educated about it.'" This is all interesting insight from Colon, though it's not particularly surprising. But it all serves to illustrate that, in the broadcast field, most of those bumpers disappear. Players-turned-analysts can be as candid as they want, because candidness helps ratings. The flip side of freer speech arises when players have to criticize the performance of a former teammate or coach. Colon said the broadcast boot camp instructors told players to "prepare for the backlash" if they say something brutally honest. 9 P a g e

Douzable said players-turned-analysts must walk "a fine line between talking down on somebody" and "attacking the problem, and not the player." The message from the boot camp instructors, according to Douzable: "Be critical of the play, not the player." Colon found himself on that line this week. In a radio interview at boot camp, he offered a very candid (though not unfair or mean-spirited) critique of Jets quarterback Geno Smith's struggles, while essentially saying Smith must improve in Before doing that radio interview, Colon spoke about the balance he might have to consider as an analyst, when he needs to criticize former teammates. "It's tough, because the locker room is such a fraternity," Colon said. "It's a brotherhood. I've seen it go bad, where a guy, he's your brother in arms when you're in the locker room, and then he gets into the studio and you thought you never played with him. He can turn on you." Colon has made a lot of connections with players during his career, which began with seven seasons in Pittsburgh. He doesn't want to screw up any friendships based on information or opinions he shares on TV. "The worst thing you can do is be a hypocrite or contradict things you say off the record," Colon said. "I think that's what breaks the bridge. If I go to a [former teammate] back in Pittsburgh, and he's my guy and we've had beers and I call him my brother, I think it's best for me to be straight-out honest about what I'm doing, what's my approach. Like: 'Hey, I've got to talk about this. I may have to use this. Are you OK with it?' He may say, 'No, I'm not.' "So then I have to be now respectful of the situation, because at the end of the day, nothing is forever not the league, not journalism. You don't ever want to burn a bridge if somebody feels stabbed in the back. I think that's a thin ice. People walk it. Some fall. But I think if you're just honest about what you're doing, don't come off like a hypocrite, don't come off as a snake, most guys will work with you." NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Muhammad Wilkerson might not land at Jets minicamp (Seth Walder) New York Daily News Muhammad Wilkerson s status for Jets minicamp is still to be determined. Just four days before those workouts begin, Wilkerson said he still hasn t decided whether or not he will show up. I guess we ll see, Wilkerson said Friday at a bowling event for his charity, T.E.A.M. 96 Foundation, held in his hometown of Linden, N.J. That s something my agent and I will discuss this weekend. Wilkerson has skipped all of the Jets voluntary workouts and practices this offseason in hopes of securing a long-term contract. If he were to skip minicamp too, he would be subject to fines. Friday was the first time the star defensive lineman had spoken publicly since December. When asked if he was bothered by the lack of a new contract, Wilkerson said, It s a business. I just thought you work hard on the field, do what you got to do on and off the field, and that s how you re supposed to get rewarded, he added. 10 P a g e

Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan has said he wants to keep Wilkerson, but it will all come down to whether the team and defensive lineman can agree on a price. I guess it takes a long time, Wilkerson said. This is new to me. But hopefully something will get done soon. Wilkerson is set to make $6.969 million this coming season via the fifth-year team option on his rookie contract. There was a brief flurry of speculation that Wilkerson could have been traded, both before this year s NFL draft and again immediately after the team selected defensive lineman Leonard Williams with the sixth pick. Wilkerson heard the talk. I actually woke up one morning, SportsCenter was on and I (saw the news), Wilkerson said. I guess that s just part of the business. I wasn t worried about that. I can control the things I can control. The drafting of Williams hurt Wilkerson s leverage. A few years ago, the Jets anticipated not coming to terms with Darrelle Revis, and traded him away. How would Wilkerson react if he were eventually dealt? Of course I m a New Jersey guy, I want to be here, he said, but if that was the case (and) I were to be traded, there s nothing I could do about that.
