1 INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS GAME NOTES GAME #66 / Road Game #34 Indianapolis Indians (35-30) at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (37-28) Tuesday, June 15, First 7:05 p.m. EDT PNC Field -- Moosic, Pa. Indians RHP Daniel McCutchen (4-3, 4.05 ERA) vs. Yankees RHP Ivan Nova (4-2, 3.71 ERA) TONIGHT S TRIBE STARTER: Tonight s probable starting pitcher for Indianapolis, Daniel McCutchen, turned in his second dominant outing of the season against the Pawtucket Red Sox in his last start on June 10 McCutchen limited Pawtucket to only one run and three hits while striking out seven batters in 7.0 innings of work to earn his fourth victory of the season The right-hander also squared off against the PawSox in his first Triple-A start of the 2010 campaign and earned the win after holding Pawtucket to one run on five hits in 7.0 IP After posting a 5.60 ERA (17 ER in 27.1 IP) in five starts in the month of May, McCutchen has excelled on the mound in June, logging a 2.19 ERA (3 ER in 12.1 IP) in two starts McCutchen s two previous June starts both came at Victory Field, where the right-hander has posted a 3-0 record and a 2.55 ERA (7 ER in 24.2 IP) in four starts The right-hander s numbers have dipped away from home, however, as McCutchen has posted a 1-3 record and a 5.73 ERA (14 ER in 22.0 IP) in four road starts The Texan has also posted more than respectable numbers when opposing hitters have reached base, recording a.224 batting average against (15-for-67) with runners on, a.185 batting average against (5-for-27) with runners on with two outs, a.227 batting average against (10-for-44) with runners in scoring position and a.167 batting average against (3-for-18) with runners in scoring position with two outs McCutchen has also recorded notable batting average against splits when he s both ahead and behind in the count to opposing batters, as when he s ahead of a hitter, he has held opponents to a.154 batting average (8-for-52), but when he falls behind a batter, he s allowed a.333 batting average against (16-for-48)... McCutchen, who was acquired by the Pittsburgh Pirates organization from the New York Yankees organization on July 26, 2008 for OF Xavier Nady and LHP Damaso Marte, has faced his former team, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees, on one occasion, when on June 22, 2009, he earned a win after allowing three runs on five hits in 6.0 innings of work. TONIGHT S OPPOSING STARTER: Set to oppose McCutchen in tonight s contest is Yankees starter Ivan Nova, who has faced the Indians once already this season and, in that outing on May 20, allowed five runs on five hits in 2.1 IP Before squaring off against the Tribe, Nova had posted a 2-0 record and a 2.43 ERA (10 ER in 37.0 IP) in six starts for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees Including his five-run outing against Indianapolis on May 20, Nova has gone 2-2 and posted a 5.54 ERA (16 ER in 26.0 IP) in five starts Nova, however, has logged dominant numbers in the month of June, as the right-hander has earned two victories while turning in a 2.13 ERA (3 ER in 12.2 IP) over two starts The Yankees right-hander has also been an innings-eater for Scranton, as Nova has gone at least 6.0 innings in eight of his 11 starts this season When he s ahead in the count, Nova has limited opposing batters to a.179 batting average against (15-for-84), but when he falls behind hitters, opponents are hitting.287 (25-for- 87) against the Yankee starter Aside from his time at the Triple-A level this season, Nova also appeared in two games for the New York Yankees and held the Detroit Tigers (2.0 IP) and the Minnesota Twins (1.0 IP) scoreless over three innings of work. TIP YOUR CAP TO THE KID, AGAIN: After an RBI double in Sunday evening s contest accounted for the first hit and the first run driven in in 2B Jim Negrych s Triple-A career, the Indians rookie was at it again on Monday night, when he hit his first Triple-A home run in the fourth inning against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre The home run was the first of three hits on the night for Negrych, who is hitting.444 (4-for-9) with three runs scored, two doubles, one home run, three RBI and two stolen bases in four games for the Tribe Before being promoted to Triple-A Indianapolis on June 11, the New York native batted.267 (36-for-135) with seven doubles, three triples, one home run and 22 RBI in 49 games for the Double-A Altoona Curve (Pa.). CHALK IT UP TO CHULK: Following his first outing in an Indianapolis Indians uniform, RHP Vinnie Chulk s ERA stood at after the reliever had allowed eight earned runs while recording only one out Six earned runs over his next 3.2 innings of work actually lowered the right-hander s ERA to on April 19 Chulk was then placed on the disabled list on April 20, and, since being activated on April 27, the reliever has been nothing short of spectacular out of the Tribe bullpen In 16 games since coming off the DL, Chulk has posted a 0.44 ERA and has allowed only one earned run in 20.2 IP The right-hander has also only given up 13 hits and has struck out 22 opposing batters since April 28. MUCH ADO ABOUT MELILLO: After seeing his season-high six-game hitting streak snapped on Sunday night, Indians OF/INF Kevin Melillo continued his impressive season at the plate for the Tribe with a 2-for-5, two run, one double performance against the Yankees Since being acquired from Double-A Altoona (Pa.) on May 8, Melillo has batted.287 (35-for-122) with 20 runs scored, 10 doubles, four triples, four home runs, 16 RBI, 12 walks and three stolen bases in 33 games A middle infielder by trade, Melillo has played all three outfield positions and second base for the Indians this season In the batting order, the left-hander has also filled in admirably, hitting in the first, second, seventh, eighth and ninth places in the lineup Among active players on the Indians roster, Melillo ranks tied for first in triples (4), tied for fourth in home runs (4) and fifth in both runs scored (20) and doubles (10) despite having the seventh fewest at-bats (122) on the team. TRIPLE-A THREAT: In only four games played for the Indianapolis Indians this season, Tribe 1B Jeff Clement has shown signs that he is ripe to rebound from a difficult start to the 2010 campaign with the Pittsburgh Pirates In just 16 at-bats with the Indians, Clement has already recorded two doubles and two home runs, all of which were hit with authority The extra-base pace set by Clement is reminiscent of both his 2009 Triple-A campaign with the Tacoma Rainiers and the start of his Indians career last season... In 92 games with the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers in 2009, Clement hit.288 (107-for-372) with 33 doubles, 14 home runs and 68 RBI... After being acquired by the Tribe on July 29, 2009 for INF Jack Wilson and RHP Ian Snell, Clement hit a solo home run in each of his first two at-bats for Indianapolis.
