RHP MATT SHOEMAKER (6-3, 4.52 IN 2017) NBCSCA A S RADIO NETWORK (95.7 FM THE GAME) EN ESPAÑOL (KIQI 1010 AM) ABOUT THE A S: The A s have started the season 1-1 for the second consecutive season and fourth time in the last five years this marks the 20th consecutive season Oakland has not swept or been swept in the first series of the season this is the A s 51st season in Oakland where they have won 16 American League West titles, two AL Wild Cards, six AL pennants and four World Championships in their 50 seasons in Oakland only the New York Yankees (18) and Atlanta Braves (17) have more division titles than the A s since the A s moved to Oakland in 1968, only the Yankees (11) and Cardinals (8) have more league championships and only the Yankees have more world championships (7) has a (.517) record over the previous 50 seasons in Oakland only four teams have won more games over that span (New York Yankees, Boston, Los Angeles Dodgers, St. Louis) this is the Athletics franchise 118th season in the American League since 1901, the A s have 16 AL West titles plus 15 AL pennants and nine World Championships only the Yankees (27) and Cardinals (11) have won more World Championships the A s are (.487) in their previous 117 seasons that includes a record from in Philadelphia and from in Kansas City. ONE-RUN GAMES: The A s have started the season with back-to-back one-run games for the second time in the last 32 years (also 2016) have started the season with three straight one-run games twice in Oakland history (1972 and 2016) went in one-run decisions last year. ROSTER NOTES: The A s opened the season with 13 pitchers and 12 position players for the second consecutive year prior to last year, the A s had not opened the season with more than 12 pitchers on a 25-man Opening Day roster since 1994 when they had 13 (had 14 on the 1995 Opening Day roster, which was expanded to 28 following the strike) 10 players returned from last years Opening Day roster (Casilla, Coulombe, Davis, Graveman, Hendriks, Joyce, Lowrie, Manaea, Semien, Triggs) and 10 other players on the roster played for the A s at some point last year (Chapman, Gossett, Hatcher, Maxwell, Mengden, Olson, Pinder, Powell, Smolinksi, Treinen) two were signed as a free agent (Lucroy, Petit), and three were acquired in a trade (Buchter, Pagán, Piscotty). PITCHING PROBABLES TENURE: Of the 25 players on the A s Opening Day roster, only two played for the A s prior to the 2015 season (Casilla, Lowrie) however, both of those have played for other teams since then and neither were with the A s in 2015 only two players have been on each of the A s last four Opening Day rosters (Graveman, Semien) Bruce Maxwell and Matt Olson, who were drafted in 2012, have the longest interrupted tenure with the A s organization. ROOKIE AND VETERANS: The A s had no rookies on the Opening Day roster for just the second time in the last 12 years (also 2014) five players had six or more years of service: Casilla (10 years, 148 days), Lowrie (9 years, 111 days), Joyce (8 years, 123 days), Lucroy (7 years, 136 days) and Petit (7 years, 16 days). THE DISABLED LIST: The A s begin the season with five players on the disabled list for the third consecutive season (Blackburn, Cotton, Dull, Núñez, Phegley) Oakland used the DL 23 times last year and the players combined to miss 1058 games, an average of 46.0 games per stint it marked the third consecutive season and seventh time in the last 11 years the A s have used the DL at least 20 times have had at least three players on the DL every day since July 30, 2011 and have not had fewer than two players on the DL since the end of the 2006 season when they had just one.
