SEEKING A SEASON SWEEP--A win today would give Kansas City a 7-0 mark against the Rays in 2015, which would mark the first unbeaten season series of at least seven games since the 1988 season when the Royals posted a 12-0 mark against Baltimore...KC has already swept a pair of Interleague sets this season, going 4-0 against both Milwaukee and Cincinnati. TWO OUTS??? -- NO PROBLEM--The Royals added to their two-out success by plating four of their six runs last night after two were away...a huge portion of KC s success vs. the Rays this year has come in two-out situations, with the Royals plating 64.3% of their runs against Tampa Bay with just one out to go (27 of 42)...the Royals lead the Majors in two-out hitting at.282, while the Major League average for two-out hitting stands at kc is also slugging at a 435 clip, second best in the Majors, while leading the bigs with runners in scoring position and two away also at kc has plated 239 two-out runs, second most in the American League...a season ago, Kansas City hit just.236 in two-out situations with 219 total runs...the Royals boast three of the top six individual two-out hitters with Lorenzo Cain (.396) leading the league, followed by Kendrys Morales (.339) in fourth and Eric Hosmer (.335), who is sixth...hosmer (59), Morales (59) and Cain (57) rank tied for second and tied for and fourth, respectively in two-out hits...morales, who is tied for third in the A.L. in overall RBI (90) has driven more than half of those in with two outs, leading the Majors with 47, eclipsing Joe Randa s (2000) previous club record of 46. DAYDREAM BELIEVERS--Kansas City hasn t Monkee d around when it comes to playing in the afternoon, posting a 14-4 mark in the last 18 day games dating back to a visit to Oakland on June 27...since that date, the Royals are 7-3 in its last 10 afternoon road affairs...on the year, KC is in the daytime, a.641 winning pct., which is the best in the American League and third best in the Majors. THE COMEBACK KIDS--The Royals rebounded quickly from losing its lead last night by plating a pair of fourth inning runs to retake the lead and eventually post the 6-3 triumph...it marked the 35th come-from-behind win this year, eclipsing the entire total of comebacks from last season and taking over the A.L. lead (Houston has 34). PEN BACK ATOP THE RANKINGS--The bullpen contributed 3.2 scoreless innings last night, giving the group 6.0 shutout frames through the first two games of this series while dropping its season ERA to 2.31 to edge past St. Louis (2.32) for the best relief corps in the Majors...in the last 12 games, the KC pen has a 1.47 ERA (7 earned runs in 43.0 innings)...the Royals have also combined for a 26-8 record by their pen, easily the best winning percentage in baseball, at.765, while KC s 47 saves are third-most in the Majors, behind only the Cards (53) and Tampa Bay (49). SOLID VS. O S--Danny returned to the win column last Tuesday with a 3-2 triumph over the Orioles in Kauffman Stadium...he gave up two runs on five hits over 5.2 innings, with a pair of walks and five strikeouts...duff set down 11 of the first 13 hitters he faced as the Royals built a 3-0 lead...his only issue took place in the fourth when he issued a twoout walk and three straight singles, cutting the lead to when the O s threatened again with two outs in the sixth, Luke Hochevar and KC s bullpen took over, recording the final 10 outs to preserve the victory, Danny s third of the month and fifth since the start of July. STILL A SOLID SECOND HALF--Duffy has performed admirably over his last 10 outings...since July 1, Danny is 5-2 with a 3.03 ERA (20 ER in 59.1 IP), with a.236 opponents average and six quality starts...comparatively, over his first 10 starts, he went 2-4 with a 5.44 ERA (30 ER in 49.2 IP), with opponents hitting.302, while he turned in just two quality starts. BETTER VS. LEFTIES--One reason for Duff s improvement in recent starts has been better results against left-handed hitters...after allowing lefties to hit.326 (15-for-46) over his first 10 starts, Danny has held them to a.186 average (8-for-43) over his last 10 outings, which included holding Orioles lefties hitless in six at-bat last Tuesday...in 2014, he held fellow southpaws to the second-lowest average in MLB (.137), while he has still not allowed a homer to a left-handed batter since Jim Thome took him deep on August 27, 2011, spanning 263 at-bats. WINNINGEST MONTH--Duffy makes his final August start, looking for his fourth victory, which would establish a career high for a single month...throughout his career, August has been kind to the lefty as he enters tonight s start with an 8-6 record and a 3.62 ERA (43 ER in IP) in 19 career starts in the eighth month...his eight career wins in August are easily the most of any month as he s recorded 16 wins in all other months combined. AFTERNOON DELIGHT--Danny looks to stay unbeaten in the afternoon, entering today at 2-0 with a 3.41 ERA with a.248 opponents average in five daytime starts this season...both of his afternoon wins have come on the road, at Minnesota (12-3) April 13 and at Chicago (4-1) July 19. RAYS--Duff faces the Rays for the first time since August 11, 2011, when he suffered a 4-1 setback here at The Trop...in his only outing vs. Tampa Bay, he allowed three runs on five hits over 7.0 innings...he s 2-3 with a 4.88 ERA (15 ER in 27.2 IP) in five starts against A.L. East foes this season and 4-10 in his career. ON THE ROAD--Today is his 10th road start of the year, entering at 3-4 with a 4.27 ERA (25 ER in 52.2 IP)...he s alternated wins and losses over his last five starts away from The K, most recently, dropping a 4-1 decision at Fenway Park on August 20...he s with a 3.56 ERA in 38 career road starts and 42 outings, holding the opposition to a.245 average in their home ballparks.
