They use a complicated metric system that is explained in detail at their Web sites. Check out their coverage of college baseball at their Web sites and Twitter feeds. Tilton Named a Lowe s Senior CLASS Nominee Thirty NCAA baseball student-athletes who excel both on and off the field were selected as candidates today for the Lowe s Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence community, classroom, character and competition. Charlotte senior Cory Tilton was among those on the initial list. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. The 2011 candidate class includes 15 student-athletes with cumulative grade point averages of better than a 3.5, including three with perfect 4.0 GPAs. Seven are from teams ranked in the Collegiate Baseball preseason top 35 poll. Lowe s, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, will announce the winner June 24 at the College World Series in Omaha. Trophy Case Corey Roberts and Justin Roland were named to the Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-America List for outstanding first full seasons after In January, Roland was named a Shortstop to Watch by College Baseball 360.com. Senior closer Bryan Hamilton was named a Preseason Third-Team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and College Baseball Lineup.com. He was also put on the NCBWA Stopper of the Year watch list. In late March, catcher Ross Steedley was added to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List. Atlantic 10 Weekly Awards Charlotte redshirt sophomore Tony Montalbano was named the first Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week of the season on 2/21 after his outstanding had a pair of doubles and drove in six RBI against Coppin State on Friday night. For the weekend, he led the 49ers (4-0) with 10 hits and 10 RBI, including five doubles and was 3-for-4 with the bases loaded. Freshman Micah Bryan was selected as the A-10 Rookie of the Week for 3/1. The left handed freshman came in facing a 2-1 deficit and the bases loaded with nobody out in the top of the ninth on Saturday, 2/26 against Missouri. Bryan was able to induce three-straight groundouts to get out of trouble and get the win when the team scored two in the ninth. After his first career home run, freshman Justin Seager won the league s Rookie of the Week on March 7. Seager s blast helped the Niners to a 6-5 win over UNC Asheville and gave him a hit in each of his first five collegiate games. Sophomore starting pitcher Corey Roberts tossed Charlotte s his first career complete game in a 7-1 win on March 12 against Ball State. The CG was Charlotte s first of the season and the first since March 8, He tied his own season high with nine strikeouts, scattering four hits and a walk in the contest. All-Atlantic 10 Honorees Charlotte has three active players who have been named All-Atlantic 10 in two different seasons on the squad in Corey Shaylor and Justin Wilson were First-Team members last season. Wilson and Joe Yermal made the Second-Team in 2009, while Shaylor and Yermal were named to the Second-Team in Shaylor was the league s Rookie of the Year in The only other player on the roster with an All-Conference nod is Bryan Hamilton (All-Rookie Team in 2007). Home Run Pace NCAA Baseball has changed its rules for the 2011 season, with all teams changing to a composite bat that reacts more like wood than previous incarnations. Using standards of control like Ball Exit Speed Ratio (previous) and Batted Ball Coefficient of Restitution (new standard), the bat changes have an impact on the game. College Splits.com was tracking run scoring and home runs at the start of the year. We will track those numbers as it releates to Charlotte and the Atlantic 10 here on Mondays and Thursdays.
