2 The Games The Murray State softball team will continue its longest home stand of the 2010 season when Bethel and Austin Peay come to Murray over the remainder of the week. The Lady Wildcats will come to Racer Field at Murray-Calloway County Park, Thursday, April 8 for a 2 p.m. double header. The Lady Govs then take their turn in Murray, April for a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series that starts at 1 p.m. each day. The teams will play a double header Saturday and a single game Sunday. Scouting the Lady Wildcats Bethel, a member of the NAIA, is currently on the season after winning four of its last five games. The Lady Wildcats will have two more chances to add wins to their season total before playing MSU, as they play Louisiana State University-Alexandria Wednesday for a double header. In early stats available for Bethel, Katie Pacifici is by far the leader for the Lady Wildcats. Through six games Pacifici has a.632 batting average, a.947 slugging percentage, 12 hits and six RBIs. The next highest batting average on the team is Morgan Berry s.375. As a team Bethel has struggled to get its bats going, with a.250 batting average, while allowing its opponents to hit.313. The Lady Wildcats make up for a lower hitting percentage by having a strong fielding percentage, at.952. The team is also strong on the bases, having stolen a base in 20 of their 25 attempts. Bethel has two main pitchers in Leah Hensley and Amber Metzger. Hensley has a 1.40 ERA, with a 2-1 record in three complete games and one shut out. Her opponents have a.256 batting average, with 11 walks and nine strike outs to her credit. Metzger has a 3.29 ERA on the season, with a 1-2 record. She has struck out seven batters and her opponents have a.264 batting average. Scouting the Lady Govs APSU is currently 8-23 overall and 3-7 in league action. The Lady Govs will play Belmont in a double header Tuesday, April 6 and Evansville in a double header Wednesday, April 7 before coming to Murray. As a team, the Lady Govs have struggled at the plate this season, having a team batting average of.218. APSU has recorded 91 less hits then its opponents ( ) and allowed 25 home runs to its eight on the season. GAME NOTES Brittany Williams has the highest batting average on the squad, with a.261 mark. She also leads the team in hits, with 24 and is among the leaders with nine RBIs. Tiffany Smith is the other top offensive performer for APSU, with a.259 batting average. She has 21 hits, 13 RBIs and a.371 on-base percentage. Smith has tallied eight doubles on the season and is also strong defensively, with a.908 fielding percentage. The Lady Govs have four pitchers who have seen action in the circle, but only one has more than one win on the season. Morgan Brewer is 7-6 on the year, with a 2.81 ERA in 74.2 innings of work. She has struck out 55 batters and walked 24, with her opponents combining for a.265 batting average. Abby Mabry is the only other pitcher with a win on her record this season, at 1-6. She has 4.42 ERA, with 34 strike outs in 50.2 innings of action. APSU has a.921 fielding percentage in 2010, with 74 errors recorded. Putting Two Games Together The Racers earned their first sweep of a double header, April 2, against Tennessee Tech. MSU earned a 12-6 decision in the first game of the day before coming from behind in the top of the seventh to earn a 6-1 win in the night cap. First Conference Series The Racers went 1-1 in their first OVC series at Tennessee State. MSU earned an 8-1 victory in the opening game of the day before falling 7-5 in game two. The third game is the series was then rained out. First Grand Slam After garnering her first career home runs against SIU Edwardsville (March 17), junior Taylor Wilson became the first Racer to record a grand slam. Wilson hit a shot over the left field fence at Louisiana-Monroe in the top of the second inning, March 23. Home Run Weeks From March 17 to March 27 the Racers more than doubled their home run performance on the season. In the first 13 games of the season MSU tallied six home runs, but in those nine games that total jumped 14, to 20. Freshman Ellyn Troup and juniors Jenna Bradley and Taylor Wilson led the production with three each. Troup and Bradley both had a game-winning home run in their totals, while Wilson recorded the team s first grand slam against Louisiana- Monroe (March 23). Freshman Kaitlyn England added two, while rookies Madi Ratliff and Stephanie Edwards and junior Lauren Buch each recorded one. Picking Up First Win The Racers earned their first collegiate victory, March 3, 2010 against Evansville (6-2) in the second game of a double-header at Racer Field. MSU followed with its second win over Eastern Kentucky, March 7, 2010 at the Lady Bison Classic hosted by Lipscomb in Nashville, Tenn. Gaining Early Recognition The Racers have earned respect in the Ohio Valley Conference even before they have played their first official game. MSU was picked to finished eighth, out of 10 teams in the 2010 OVC Preseason poll, as voted on by the league s head coaches. Building A Foundation The Murray State softball team is playing its inaugural softball season in 2010 and is looking to build a foundation for the future. Head Coach Jay Pyron has assembled a versatile team that will be characterized by their strong work ethic. Every player and staff member is excited to get onto the field and show what it means to be part of the Racer softball program. We have a lot of versatility, said Pyron. We have players that not only can play any position on the field defensively, but also have a rare combination of speed and power. The team is focusing on working hard, building team chemistry and doing things the right way to make sure that they are not just successful this year, but for many years to come.
