2 The Games The Murray State softball team has a full slate of games this week, starting on the road in Bowling Green, Ky. The Racers face Western Kentucky, Tuesday, April 13 at 4 p.m. at WKU Softball Field before heading back to Racer Field at Murray- Calloway County Park for five more games. MSU hosts UT Martin for a single game, Wednesday, April 14 at 5 p.m. and then Southeast Missouri State for an Ohio Valley Conference series, April at 1 p.m. Saturday has a double header scheduled, with a single game Sunday. Scouting the Hilltoppers WKU heads into Tuesday s game with a overall record and a 5-7 mark in the Sun Belt Conference. The Hilltoppers have been off since April 8 when they split with Evansville (6-0, 1-2). As a team, WKU is hitting.255 on the season, with three players hitting over.300. Mallorie Sulaski leads the team with a.419 batting average, with a team-high 31 hits and a.662 slugging percentage. Lindsay Antone leads the team with 27 RBIs and 31 hits, including four home runs. The Hilltoppers have three pitchers, but one that has seen most of the action in the circle. Kim Wagner is 14-5 this season in 24 appearances and 16 games started. She has thrown 12 complete games, with five shut outs and 86 strike outs. Sulaski and Dana Nathanson are the other two pitchers, with Sulaski having a 5-4 record and Nathanson sitting at 5-5. Scouting the Skyhawks UTM is 29-7 overall and 10-3 in the OVC after going 2-1 over the weekend at Tennessee Tech. The Skyhawks will play a double header at home against Belmont Tuesday, April 13 before heading to Murray. UTM is hitting.314 on the season, with six players recording a batting average over.300. Megan Williams leads the team with a.397 mark, a teamhigh 46 hits and a slugging percentage of.672. She has hit a team-best eight home runs and has 24 RBIs to her credit. Laura Roberts is also strong at the plate, with a.369 batting average, 38 hits and 28 RBIs. Jenny Bain leads the team with 32 RBIs and has seven home runs and 45 hits on the season. The Skyhawks have four pitchers that have seen time in the circle, but two that earn the most action. Kat Vanderham has a 1.79 ERA and a 10-1 record this season, with 62 strike outs and three shut outs. Paij Lintz has a 13-3 record, with an ERA of 2.20 and a team-best 89 strike outs to her credit. GAME NOTES Against UT Martin The Racers and the Skyhawks met for a double header in Martin, Tenn., (March 30) with UTM earning both victories, 6-0 and 11-3 (5). Freshman Ellyn Troup led all MSU batters with three hits, while sophomore Megan Glosser added two and freshman Kaitlyn England hit a home run. All four of the Racers pitchers saw action against the Skyhawks, with freshman Starr Gilley recording three strike outs. UTM was led by Megan Williams with four this, while Laura Roberts garnered three (3 RBIs), and Jenny Bain added two hits (4 RBIs). Both of the Skyhawks top pitchers threw complete games and earned six strike outs. Scouting the Redhawks SEMO heads into this week s action with a overall record and a 4-9 mark in league action. As a team, the Redhawks are hitting.279 on the year, with three players hitting over.300. SEMO has two pitchers on staff that have seen time in the circle this season and they have combined for a 4.65 ERA. Stephanie Barnes has the lowest ERA on the team at 4.05, while Whitney Dupuis has an ERA of Barnes is 8-11, with 61 strike outs, 67 walks and an opponent batting average of.283. Dupuis is 5-10, with 22 strike outs and 44 walks. Nicole Troncoso is the team s leader in the batting average and hits columns, with a.352 mark and 43 hits. Melissa Walker and Elise Sperakos are the other two players with batting averages over.300, with a.308 and.307, respectively. Carmen Fowler has a team-high 19 RBIs. Shelby Saving Freshman Shelby Kosmecki earned her first and second career saves last week in the two games against Bethel. The Somerset, Ky., native pitched one inning in the opening game, garnering one strike out and then went 1.2 innings in game two and struck out four of the last six batters. First Series Sweep The Racers earned their first series sweep, with their 6-2 and 6-1 wins over Bethel, April 8 at Racer Field. The double header victory also marked the second time that MSU has swept a double header. Putting Racer Name in NCAA Stats In games through April 4, 2010, the Racers were ranked No. 30 in the NCAA for stolen bases per game, at Sophomore Megan Glosser was ranked No. 44 individually in the same column, with 0.56 stolen bases per game. Juniors Jenna Bradley, Lauren Buch and Kristen Broadway were also ranked in the top 100 in an NCAA statistical category. Broadway was No. 26 in saves (2), Bradley was ranked 81st in home runs per game (0.26), and Buch was No. 98 in triples (2). Putting Two Games Together The Racers earned their first sweep of a double header, April 2, against Tennessee Tech. MSU earned a 12-6 decision in the first game of the day before coming from behind in the top of the seventh to earn a 6-1 win in the night cap. First Conference Series The Racers went 1-1 in their first OVC series at Tennessee State. MSU earned an 8-1 victory in the opening game of the day before falling 7-5 in game two. The third game is the series was then rained out. First Grand Slam After garnering her first career home runs against SIU Edwardsville (March 17), junior Taylor Wilson became the first Racer to record a grand slam. Wilson hit a shot over the left field fence at Louisiana-Monroe in the top of the second inning, March 23. Home Run Weeks From March 17 to March 27 the Racers more than doubled their home run performance on the season. In the first 13 games of the season MSU tallied six home runs, but in those nine games that total jumped 14, to 20. Freshman Ellyn Troup and juniors Jenna Bradley and Taylor Wilson led the production with three each. Troup and Bradley both had a gamewinning home run in their totals, while Wilson recorded the team s first grand slam against Louisiana-Monroe (March 23). Freshman Kaitlyn England added two, while rookies Madi Ratliff and Stephanie Edwards and junior Lauren Buch each recorded one. Picking Up First Win The Racers earned their first collegiate victory, March 3, 2010 against Evansville (6-2) in the second game of a double-header at Racer Field. MSU followed with its second win over Eastern Kentucky, March 7, 2010 at the Lady Bison Classic hosted by Lipscomb in Nashville, Tenn.
