McCovey Chronicles SF Giants Minor Lines 6/12/17: Welcome to the Heliotpad! Roger Ah, the Giants got me an über-toolsy high school OF for Draft Day, just like I always wish for (well, not always, lots of times I wish for an über-toolsy high school SS)! Thanks Giants! That was awesome of you. Now if it s not too much to ask for, could you please turn into a star, Heliot? Remember, old man Buster s gonna need your help to keep Titletown in the Bay Area. Lots of this please! As is often the case for me, I first got a case of the Heliot s at the Under-Armour Game, the televised annual showcase event for High School draft talent held at Wrigley Field. And in last year s event, Ramos really stole the show...once the lights came on. The BA write up of that game gives a good hint at the development challenges ahead for Ramos and the Giants, but also the considerable potential reward: Better game player than practice player? Why I remember when Joe Montana used to be accused of that! (particularly by one Dan Devine). Until the games start, I ll just keep on looking at that lede: It s hard to have a better game that the one Heliot Ramos put together at Wrigley Field. Yeah, that ll feed some dreams, alright. HIGHLIGHTS: Ronnie Jebavy had three hits, including double, triple; Marco Gonzalez struck out 8 over 4 innings. Sacramento and Richmond both had scheduled off days Possibly so that they could keep an eye on more important matters: San Jose won at Modesto Nuts (Mariners), 6-4 San Jose Bats Player Pos AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO AVG* Ronnie Jebavy CF Ryan Howard SS Aramis Garcia C Heath Quinn RF Dillon Dobson 1B Gio Brusa LF Jonah Arenado 3B Matt Pare DH Jalen Miller 2B San Jose Arms Player IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA* Mike Connolly (W, 4-5) Carlos Diaz (H, 4) Dylan Rheault (S, 4)

San Jose strung together five hits in the 2nd inning, including back to back RBI doubles from Gio Brusa and Jonah Arenado, and a two-out two-run single from Ryan Howard. The early four-run explosion allowed the Giants to more or less cruise to a 6-4 win. Ronnie Jebavy led the team s hit parades (12 more hits) by collecting 3 4 of a cycle. Ironically, Jebavy had nothing to do with the four-run rally, striking out with runners on 2nd and 3rd, but his triple led to the team s final run. Suddenly hot Matt Paré chipped in with his 1st HR of the year. The multi-talented (and Boston College alum!) backup talked with Joe Ritzo before yesterday s game about the team, his internet fame with Homeless Minor Leaguer and what s coming from his great v-log. You can here that interview here. (that Roger isn t me by the way, though I surely wish it were!). Paré s HR was the team s 61st of the year as they continue to up the long balls. After starter Michael Connolly let Modesto climb back into the game, the San Jose bullpen shut it down in the late innings, with Carlos Diaz and Dylan Rhealt allowing just 1 hit over the final three innings while striking out 6. Augusta lost to Greenville Drive (Red Sox), 6-4 splitting their four game series, 2-2 Augusta Bats Player Pos AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO AVG Cristian Paulino 3B Jean Angomas CF Kelvin Beltre 2B Skyler Ewing C Jose Vizcaino Jr. 1B Sandro Fabian RF Jacob Heyward LF Frandy De La Rosa DH Brandon Van Horn SS Augusta Arms Player IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA Stephen Woods Sandro Cabrera (BS, 1) Nolan Riggs (L, 1-2) Augusta committed three errors in helping an early 2-0 slip away and losing the chance for a second consecutive series win. Augusta managed just five hits in the game, including two from recently returned Frandy de la Rosa and Sandro Fabian s 14th double of the year (tied for 11th in the Sally). Newly named All Star Kelvin Beltre had a hit and a walk. Given the defensive lapses behind him, Stephen Woods pitched fairly well, but he was one off his lowest K total of the year, striking out 3 while walking 3. He also had two WP. On the bright side, he reached his highest pitch total of the year, stretching out for 96 pitches in his near six innings of work.

And before we leave Georgia, a well-deserved congratulations: Vizcaino, just by the by, will already be Rule 5 draft eligible this winter, which means there s a good chance that his development might end up being affected by the awful service time rules concerning IFA teenagers. Like other DSL graduates before him (Escobar, Flores, Gregorio) if he ends up having a strong campaign the Giants may feel forced to protect him and start his options clock even though he s a long way from developed. I believe that this is not true of Melvin Adon (despite Adon s being two years older), who should still have one more season in 2018 before he needs protecting. DSL Giants lost to DSL Padres, 6-2 DSL Bats Player Pos AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO AVG Anyesber Sivira 3B Martin Doria 3B Andrew Caraballo SS Enoc Watts SS Alexander Canario RF Omar Medina 1B Wascar De Leon 2B Ismael Alcantara LF a- Raiber Gutierrez PH-LF b- Franklin Labour PH-LF Ghordy Santos DH Keyberth Mejias C c- Samuel Jorge PH Jose Patino CF DSL Arms Player IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA Marco Gonzalez (L, 0-2) Oliver Pinto Orleny Quiroz Jorge Labrador year old Venezuelan lefty Marco Gonzalez struck out 8 in four innings of work. He has 12 Ks, 5 BBs in 7.1 IP so far this year. In 2016, he had a 15/15 K/BB ratio going in 14 IP, so he s got a good head start going on improving those peripherals significantly. Jorge Labrador was a pitch away from his second consecutive scoreless outing when he gave up a 9th inning three-run bomb to ruin his line. 17 year old Venezuelan Catcher (the Giants love them some Venezuelan catchers!) Keyberth Mejias had one-third of the team s hits in his second start of the year. The young backstop was signed for $230,000 last year on the J2 market. Today s Scheduled Starters: Sacramento: Tyler Beede vs. Wilfredo Boscan Richmond: Sam Coonrod vs. Glenn Sparkmann

San Jose: Mark Reyes vs. Nick Neidert Augusta: Melvin Adon vs. Joey Wentz (second straight matchup between these two) DSL: Norwith Gudino And finally of course, all of the Bay Area salutes the new champions! River Cats' ninth-inning rally comes up short in 7-5 loss Sacramento sends winning run to the plate, but drops series finale to Aces West Sacramento, CA - The Sacramento River Cats (24-38) rallied in the ninth inning to climb within two runs of the Reno Aces (40-24) Sunday afternoon at Raley Field, but that was as close as they would get, dropping the series finale 7-5. Sacramento scored first for the fourth straight game thanks to an RBI-single by Ali Castillo in the second inning. The two teams traded blows over the next two frames and entered the sixth inning tied 3-3. Dan Slania was on his way to having his best start this year with the River Cats until he unraveled in the sixth, allowing three runs on three hits in his final inning. An inning later, Reno tacked on another run off the newest River Cats reliever Heath Slatton to take a four-run lead. In the ninth, Sacramento loaded the bases before Ryder Jones drove a base hit up the middle, scoring two and making it a 7-5 ballgame. The Aces then brought in closer Jimmie Sherfy, who struck out Mac Williamson and got catcher Tim Federowicz to ground out to end the game. Sacramento will have an off day tomorrow, their fourth of the season, and start a four game series against the Las Vegas 51s on Tuesday. The River Cats' Tyler Beede (3-3, 4.37) will face the 51s' Wilfredo Boscan (2-3, 4.47). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. (PT) and the game can be heard live online at rivercats.com and on the air on ESPN Postgame Notes Can't Stop Castillo: Ali Castillo was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI now has five RBI over his last three games had his first three-hit game of the season and his second two-rbi game six of his seven RBI have come in June. Slania: Dan Slania took the loss, his eighth of the season, allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits while walking four and striking out five surrendered his 14th home run of the season coming into this start, Slania had allowed five earned runs in his previous two June starts. Look Out, Longball: With two home runs allowed, the River Cats have now allowed 60 home runs this season, the 10th most by a pitching staff in the PCL. Triple-A debut: Heath Slatton made his Triple-A debut today with the River Cats the 23-year-old was the Giants' 18th round pick in 2015 out of Middle Tennessee State Slatton threw two innings of one run ball in his debut.

Squirrels Drop Series Finale; Streak Snapped At Four Altoona, PA - The Altoona Curve (33-28) pulled ahead of the Flying Squirrels with a pair of four-run innings to avoid a series sweep 9-3 on Sunday evening at Peoples Natural Gas Field. The loss snapped Richmond's season-high four game winning streak. Jose Flores suffered the loss for Richmond, despite lasting a season-high 5.1 innings. The Flying Squirrels (27-35) concluded the seven-game road trip with five wins and two losses. Richmond will have an off day on Monday before beginning a three-game homestand on Tuesday. For a full rundown of the upcoming homestand, please click here. The Squirrels got of to a solid start on Sunday against Altoona's Tanner Anderson with a pair of runs over the first two innings. Miguel Gomez launched a two-out double into the gap and Jerry Sands singled him home for a 1-0 advantage. After the Curve tied the game with a run in the bottom of the first inning, Richmond quickly regained the lead in the second. With one out, Brandon Bednar lofted a soft fly ball down the right field line on a ball that should have been caught. Right fielder Jerrick Suiter misread the ball and dove at the last moment, missing the catch, allowing Bednar to streak into third base. Ryan Lollis then lined a single into center field for a 2-1 lead. Richmond's Jose Flores continued his transition from reliever to starter and he managed to go a seasonhigh 5.1 innings in the outing. Flores allowed an RBI double to Edwin Espinal in the first inning after walking Pablo Reyes with one out. Flores issued another walk in the second, but picked up his first two strikeouts to avert trouble. The righty also worked around an error in the third inning. The Flying Squirrels struck for another run off of Anderson in the fourth inning. Sands drilled his sixth double of the season to begin the stanza and came around to score on a pair of groundouts. Flores pitched well through five innings. He retired the side in order in the fourth inning and worked around a base hit in the fifth to keep Richmond up, 3-1. Altoona eventually broke through in the sixth inning to take the lead and force Flores from the game. The Curve loaded the bases off of Flores on three base hits. Elvis Escobar then lined a base hit to score a run and turn Richmond to the bullpen. Carlos Alvarado replaced Flores and allowed all three inherited runners to score, giving Altoona their first lead of the series, 5-3. Flores (1-1) allowed five runs on seven hits and suffered the defeat. Yordy Cabrera entered to pitch the seventh inning and allowed four more runs to fall behind, 9-3. Cabrera walked three batters in the inning and allowed a three-run homer to Jerrick Suiter. Christian Jones entered with the bases loaded and ended the inning without any further damage. Jones tossed a eighth inning as well. Richmond will return to The Diamond for a brief three game series starting on Tuesday against New Hampshire. RHP Sam Coonrod is scheduled to make the start for Richmond agains New Hampshire RHP Glenn Sparkman. 17 Giants Earn 6-4 Victory Over Nuts Four-run second inning, dominant bullpen key San Jose win MODESTO, CA - The San Jose Giants used a four-run top of the second inning to take an early lead on Monday night and then never looked back in a 6-4 victory over the Modesto Nuts at John Thurman Field. Eight players in the San Jose lineup recorded at least one hit as the Giants (28-36) claimed the opener of the three-game series. Ronnie Jebavy (3-for-5, 2B, 3B) doubled and tripled as part of a three-hit game while Ryan Howard (2- for-4, 2 RBI) delivered a two-out, two-run single during the pivotal second inning rally to lead the offensive attack. Matt Pare (1-for-4, HR, RBI) also smacked a solo home run. Mike Connolly (4-5) earned the win after tossing six innings with four runs (all earned) allowed. Connolly surrendered eight hits, walked one and struck out four during his 88-pitch outing. Carlos Diaz (2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO) then kept the Nuts off the scoreboard over the seventh and eighth innings before Dylan Rheault (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO) struck out the side in a perfect bottom of the ninth to collect the save. The trio of hurlers combined to retire 11 out of the last 12 Modesto hitters of the contest. Three straight one-out hits against Connolly in the bottom of the first gave the Nuts an early 1-0 lead, but San Jose immediately responded in the top of the second. Dillon Dobson led off with a single and immediately scored the tying run when the next batter, Gio Brusa, lined a double into the right field corner. Jonah Arenado then laced a double into the right center field gap - the third straight hit to open the inning - plating Brusa for a 2-1 Giants lead. After Pare flied out, Jalen Miller singled up the middle to move Arenado to third. Jebavy then struck out, but Miller stole second on the strike three pitch to put a second runner in scoring position. Howard then stepped to the plate and lined a single into left bringing home both Arenado and Miller to make it 4-1. The Nuts got one run back in the bottom of the second as Arturo Nieto hit a solo home run down the right field line to cut the San Jose lead to 4-2. In the top of the fourth, Pare launched a solo home run to left - his first homer of the season - to push the lead to 5-2. Meanwhile, Connolly settled in with back-to-back frames in the bottom of the third and fourth. The right-hander had retired eight straight Modesto hitters until issuing a one-out walk to Jordan Cowan in the fifth. Braden Bishop then stepped to the plate and hammered a double to deep left center scoring Cowan all the way from first. Logan Taylor followed with a single through the hole on the left side as Bishop came home to bring the Nuts to within 5-4. Connolly though prevented further damage in the inning as he struck out Chris Mariscal and retired Joey Curletta on a fly out to keep the Giants ahead. Connolly returned to the mound in the bottom of the sixth and surrendered a one-out single to Willie Argo as Modesto again put the potential tying run on base. Argo then stole second and advanced to third on Rayder Ascanio's groundout, but was stranded there when Nieto grounded out to end the threat. San Jose then stretched their lead to 6-4 with a single run in the top of the seventh. Jebavy led off with a triple to the fence in deep right center before Howard drew a walk. Aramis Garcia followed with a sacrifice fly to center plating Jebavy to give the Giants a two-run cushion.

Diaz entered from the bullpen to begin the bottom of the seventh and promptly struck out two batters in a frame. In the eighth, Gianfranco Wawoe singled with two outs, but Diaz came back with a strikeout of Argo to end the inning. In the bottom of the ninth with San Jose still in front by a 6-4 margin, Rheault dazzled with three straight strikeouts to seal the victory. The bullpen duo of Diaz and Rheault combined for six strikeouts, no walks and just one hit allowed over three scoreless innings. Modesto starter Nathan Bannister (2-4) suffered the loss after yielding five runs (all earned) on 10 hits over six innings. He struck out two and did not issue a walk. Notes * The Giants improved to 3-2 on their road trip. * San Jose is 9-4 in their last 13 road games overall. * Pare is 4-for-8 with a double and a home run over his last two games. * The Giants out-hit the Nuts * Dillon Dobson (2-for-4) also had a multi-hit game on Monday. * San Jose was 4-for-10 with runners in scoring position. * Diaz has thrown 12 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings spanning his last six relief appearances (18 strikeouts). * The Giants are 4-1 at John Thurman Field this season. On Deck The Giants and Nuts continue their three-game series on Tuesday evening with first pitch at John Thurman Field scheduled for 7:05 PM. Mark Reyes (2-8, 6.04 ERA) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose while Modesto is expected to counter with Nick Neidert (5-2, 3.16 ERA). The game can be heard live on sjgiants.com with coverage beginning at 6:45 PM. Errors Cost GreenJackets GreenJackets Commit Two Ninth Inning Errors in Loss Augusta, GA-The Augusta GreenJackets and the Greenville Drive were tied at four going into the top of the ninth inning Monday night. The GreenJackets committed two errors that inning and the Drive ultimately score two runs to defeat the GreenJackets 6-4 at Lake Olmstead Stadium. The inning began with a single by Tucker Tubbs. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and then to third on a pickoff attempt throwing error by relief pitcher Nolan Riggs. With runners on second and third and still one out, Nick Lovullo scored on an RBI groundout by Santiago Espinal to give the Drive a 6-4 lead. The GreenJackets had a 4-2 lead going into the sixth. Chris Madera led off the inning with a solo home run to cut the lead to 4-3. Lovullo and Luis Cedrola hit back to back singles to start the seventh. A fielder's choice groundout by Espinal scored Lovullo from third to tie the game at four.
