Royals vs. Yankees Last night s extra-inning loss signaled the loss of the season series to the Yankees, with KC trailing 2-4 entering tonight s finale...the Royals are all-time vs. the Yanks, including a deficit in games contested in Kansas City, in Kauffman Stadium. RUBBER GAME STREAK AT FIVE--Tonight is Kansas City s 17th rubber game of the year and the Royals are riding a five-game series deciding winning streak, the most recent the 10-4 triumph in Boston on Sunday night...all told, Kansas City is 9-7 in rubber games this year, including a 5-2 mark here and 4-5 ledger on the road, winning the last three road tries. AUGUST FINALE--Kansas City s brightest month of the 2016 season comes to an end tonight, with the Royals bringing a 20-8 mark into the August finale...this marks the most wins in August since KC won 21 times in despite last night s loss, since August 6, the Royals have shaved 6 1/2 games off its Wild Card deficit and 4 1/2 games off the A.L. Central deficit, entering tonight three and 6 1/2 out, respectively...the Royals were a season-high seven games below the.500 mark at entering August 6, but with wins in eight of the last 11 games and 18 of 23, the club is back to six over break-even...a win tonight against the Yankees will give the Royals an eight-series winning streak, which would be the longest since winning eight in a row from July 21-August 18, of Kansas City s 30 games remaining, 12 are against clubs currently ahead of the Royals in the Wild Card chase, including nine of the final 12 games of the season. ROSTER MOVE--The Royals today placed right-handed reliever Chien-Ming Wang on the 15-day disabled list with right biceps tendinitis and recalled lefthanded reliever Scott Alexander from Omaha (AAA)...Wang has gone 6-0 in 38 relief appearances this year...the 27-year old Alexander was 2-0 with a save and 3.00 ERA in 22 appearances for the Storm Chasers this year...this will be his second stint with the big league club this year, appearing in nine games from May 12-June 5 with a 4.85 ERA. DIVISIONAL WORK NEXT--Tonight wraps up this series with the Yankees and then the Royals will play 25 of its final 29 games against the A.L. Central, starting this weekend when the Detroit Tigers hit town...kansas City is within the Central Division, highlighted by an 11-2 mark during the last intradivisional stretch of games (August 9-21)...the only non-divisional opponent in the remaining stretch will be a four-game visit from the Oakland A s on September the remaining intradivisional opponents feature Cleveland (6), Detroit (6), Chicago (7) and Minnesota (6). A KENNEDY WINS IN MASSACHUSETTS--If you think you ve heard that before, it wasn t about baseball, as Ian picked up a 6-3 win last Friday at Fenway Park, becoming the first Kennedy to win in Massachusetts in over 70 years...of the seven Major League hurlers named Kennedy, Ian was the first to win in Boston since Vern Kennedy claimed an 8-3 victory for Cincinnati over the Boston Braves on August 16, KC s Kennedy, in winning his third straight, gave up nine hits and two runs with two walks and eight K s over his 5.1 innings, being staked to a 5-0 lead before taking the mound...he faced threats in nearly every inning, however, he limited the damage to single runs in the first on a Mookie Betts RBI single and the sixth after he had departed following Brock Holt s one-out double...he lowered his ERA to 2.83 (17 ER in 54.0 IP) since the All-Star break, allowing two runs or fewer in each of his last six outings...he recorded his ninth victory of the season to even his record for the first time since he was 6-6 after defeating Houston on June 26. ALL ABOUT THE K s--ian fanned eight last Friday in Boston, giving him 79 K s since his June 26 start vs. Houston...his total in that span ranks fifth in the American League...his season strikeout rate of 8.96 (153 K in IP) is ninth in the Junior Circuit and would rank third in club history among qualifying starters, behind only Zack Greinke (9.50 K per 9.0 IP in 2009) and teammate Danny Duffy (9.33 this season)...he has recorded at least one strikeout in each of his 232 career outings, which is the seventh-longest active streak in the big leagues, trailing Justin Verlander (308), Cole Hamels (272), Max Scherzer (257), David Price (246), Clayton Kershaw (238) and Gio Gonzalez (234). CURBING THE LONGBALL--Kennedy has allowed 28 home runs this season fourth most in the Majors but just two in his last seven starts after surrendering at least one in nine-straight outings from June 13-August 16 of the 28 homers he s allowed, 20 have been solo shots and the other eight have been two-run homers he hasn t allowed a home run with more than one man on base since a Buster Posey grand slam on June 24, 2015 with San Diego. VS. YANKEES--Ian has faced his original club twice in his career, going 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA (9 ER in 12.0 IP)...he lost a 7-3 decision in the Bronx on May 12, surrendering three home runs and seven earned over 6.1 innings...his win came in 2013 as a member of the Padres, when he allowed two runs on four hits over 5.2 innings in a 6-3 triumph at Petco Park...Kennedy debuted for the Bombers on September 1, 2007 and made 12 starts and 14 appearances through 2009, before being acquired by Arizona in the trade that sent Max Scherzer to Detroit and Curtis Granderson to the Yankees. HOME SWEET HOME--Kennedy makes his 11th home start of the season, entering at 4-3 with a 3.05 ERA (21 ER in 62.0 IP)...he s held the opposition to the sixth-lowest average (.217) in the American League at home, while his home ERA ranks 10th among A.L. hurlers that have made at least 10 starts...throughout his career, Ian has been a better pitcher in his home parks, going with a 3.70 ERA, compared to a mark and a 4.15 ERA on the road.
