HOME WORK HEATING UP--Last night s triumph gave the Royals a 6-1 mark on this homestand that concludes today, starting with a 2-1 weekend against Cleveland to open the stay, followed by a two-game sweep of the Tigers and then wins in the first two games of this set with Baltimore...it marks the first time the Royals have won three straight series this year and dating back to the last stand, KC is 7-1 in the last eight played here...the Royals have posted a home ledger since the All-Star break...with 12 home games left, KC needs at least six more wins to get to 30, which would escape matching the fewest home wins in a non-strike year, a mark in the club s final dozen home games feature visits from these Orioles (today), Chicago (3), Minnesota (4) and Cleveland (4). WHIT ROLLING--Whit Merrifield provided the game-ending heroics last night with his first career walk-off home run, his second hit of the evening...he has now reached base in 21 consecutive game, matching his longest career big league streak set on May 11-June 4, his streak is the second-longest active streak in the Majors, trailing only Houston s Alex Bregman, who homered last night to reach in his 29th straight...whit is batting.366 (30-for-82) with a.430 on-base pct. and.573 slug. with 14 runs, nine extra-base hits and 13 RBI in his last 21 games, but has also now hit safely in six in a row at a.440 clip (11-for-25)...dating back to June 27, Merrifield s.351 average (79-for-225) is tops in the Majors among qualifying players...for the season, Whit is third in the American League in hits (160), ranks fifth in batting average (.311), tied for ninth in on-base pct. (.377) and tied for fifth in multi-hit games (46)...he s the only player in the Majors with at least 60 doubles (68) and 60 steals (63) over the last two seasons. DUPER DOUBLE DIPS--Kansas City s replay guru, Bill Duplissea, had a pair of overturned calls last night, noting that John Andreoli was not hit by a Heath Fillmyer pitch in the fourth inning and then also noticing Jake Newberry s first career big league pickoff when he nabbed Cedric Mullins at first base in the ninth after initially being called safe...the best in the business, Duplissea, has a Major League best 28 overturned calls this year based on numbers released by MLB on Friday, topping Philadelphia (25) by three...duper has overturned 80% of the plays he s asked to be reviewed this year (28-for-35), which leads the Majors, just ahead of second-place San Francisco (75.9 %) as the Giants are 22-for-29...KC is also the only club not to have a challenge come back confirmed this season, with all 35 challenges either overturned or coming back as stands...dupe has made good on 68.3% of his challenges in his career (127-for-186), including a Major League best 72.7% success rate over the last three seasons (80-for-110). NEWBERRY JOINS WIN CLUB--23-year old Jake Newberry, Kansas City s 37th round pick in the 2012 draft, made his fifth big league relief appearance last night and his scoreless ninth rewarded him with his first Major League victory...he is the 314th hurler to earn a victory in a Royals uniform. ROUGH INNING LEADS TO LOSS--Jorge endured a rough fourth inning a week ago today in a 12-5 loss here to Cleveland...he was charged with five runs on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts over 4.0 innings...he retired 10 of the first 13 hitters he faced, before yielding five runs on four hits with two walks and a wild pitch, which happened over a six-batter stretch in the fourth...he did record a season-high four strikeouts, tossing 79 pitches in the shortest start of his career. SECOND TIME A STRUGGLE--López has been successful the first time through the batting order, holding opponents to a.244 average (22-for-90), including 1-for-8 last Sunday vs. Cleveland...however, they re batting.324 (12-for-37) after seeing him once, going 4-for-9 with a pair of doubles in his last start. WITH MILWAUKEE--Jorge was recalled by Milwaukee seven times this season, before being acquired by Kansas City on July 28 he made 10 relief appearances over those big league stints, eight of which were at least 2.0 innings after posting a 5.14 ERA (4 ER in 7.0 IP) in his first three outings, he pitched to a 1.42 ERA (2 ER in 12.2 IP) over his last seven, including 3.0 perfect innings on just 21 pitches in his last appearance with the Brewers on July 25 vs. Washington. WITH OMAHA--After being acquired by Kansas City on July 28, López made a pair starts with Omaha (AAA), before his recall on August 15...his first start with the Storm Chasers, August 1 vs. Las Vegas, was his first since June 17, 2017 (Game 2) with Biloxi (AA) in his Omaha debut, he allowed four runs on five hits and four strikeouts in 3.1 innings, in a no-decision on August 7, he earned a 5-0 win over Salt Lake, tossing 5.2 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one walk, with seven strikeouts he was 3-4 with five saves and a 4.47 ERA (23 ER in 48.1 IP) in 34 relief appearances between Milwaukee and Colorado Springs, before the trade IN REVIEW--Jorge spent a majority of last season with Biloxi, Milwaukee s Double-A affiliate, making 13 of his first 14 appearances as a starter... he was 3-6 with a 4.61 ERA (34 ER in 66.1 IP), before moving to the bullpen, a role in which he went 5-2 with a 3.62 ERA (15 ER in 37.1 IP) he made one appearance for Milwaukee on June 29, recording 2.0 innings of relief in an 11-3 Brewers win in Cincinnati he was named Milwaukee s Minor League Pitcher of the Month for April, going 2-1 with a 1.73 ERA (5 ER in 26.0 IP) in five starts, including a career-high tying 10 strikeouts in 6.0 scoreless innings on April 28 at Pensacola Jorge made two appearances for Puerto Rico at the World Baseball Classic, including a 9-4 win over Mexico on March 11, in which he allowed one run over 4.1 innings, and a no-decision in a 4-3 win over the Netherlands on March 20, in which he allowed two runs in 2.2 innings. HOME WORK--Jorge is making his third start at The K and looking for his first victory...he made seven home appearances with Milwaukee, posting a 2.81 ERA (5 ER in 16.0 IP) and a.228 opponents average (13-for-57) in those outings...he s 0-3 with a 5.76 ERA (19 ER in 29.2 IP) at home in his career.
