1 Nebraska at Creighton l Omaha, Neb. l March 26 Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday at Creighton 6 p.m. Practice Day NU Wraps Up Non-Conference Travel at Creighton The Nebraska softball team hits the road for the final time in non-conference play this week, as the Huskers travel to Omaha to face in-state rival Creighton on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Creighton Sports Complex. Nebraska and Creighton will be meeting for the 107th time on Wednesday, as the Huskers lead the all-time series, The Bluejays have won four of the last seven meetings, earning the series win in two of the past three seasons. In the last meeting, Creighton took advantage of several defensive miscues to rally from a 1-0, seventh-inning deficit and eliminate the Huskers from the 2007 NCAA Tournament with a 2-1 victory at Bowlin Stadium. Fans can follow all of the action between the state s two Division I softball programs, as Huskers.com will offer free audio with Nate Rohr handling the play-by-play call. After the visit to Creighton, Nebraska hosts 12th-ranked Oklahoma this weekend in the Huskers first home Big 12 games of the season. After playing 21 of their first 25 games away from Lincoln, the two-game series with the Sooners kicks off a season-ending stretch that has Nebraska playing 16 of its final 21 games at Bowlin Stadium. The Huskers are hoping more home games lead to more victories, as NU is 42-6 at Bowlin Stadium since the start of the 2006 season, including a 42-4 mark in regular-season contests. Nebraska has been just as good against the Big 12 Conference, posting a 15-2 mark the past two seasons, including a 6-1 record against ranked teams, a notable fact since Oklahoma is one of four conference foes traveling to Lincoln this season that have been ranked in the top 25. Nebraska opened Big 12 play last weekend, dropping a pair of games in Austin to the Texas Longhorns. The Huskers were swept in their opening league series for the fourth consecutive year, but Nebraska is hopeful it can once again bounce back from the slow start, as NU rebounded to Did You Know? The 2008 Huskers are without a single senior for the first time in school history. Nebraska s seven true freshmen are also the most in Head Coach Rhonda Revelle s 16 seasons. Creighton has won the first game of the regular-season series in two of the last three seasons, while winning the season series in 2005 and The Bluejays nine-inning win in 2005 snapped a 15-game Husker winning streak. Despite Creighton s success in the recent meetings, Nebraska still leads the alltime series 73-33, as the Huskers 73 wins unofficially rank as the fourth-most victories over one opponent in NCAA history. After Wednesday s short trip to Creighton, Nebraska plays 16 of its final 21 games at home, where the Huskers have won 43 of their last 47 regular-season games. Practice Day vs. Oklahoma 2 p.m. finish with at least a.500 record in conference play in each of the past three seasons they were swept. A.500 finish in the Big 12 Conference would go a long way to securing Nebraska s 14th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Since the tournament field expanded to 64 teams in 2003, every Big 12 team with at least a.500 conference record has made the tournament, while four teams with losing records have been included in the field, including Texas last season. In what will hopefully boost Nebraska s chances for a solid conference finish, Associate Head Coach Lori Sippel will be in the dugout for the first time this season on Wednesday against Creighton. Sippel, who also serves as head coach of Team Canada, missed the first 25 games of the Huskers season while training with the Canadians for the upcoming Olympic Games in Beijing this summer. Sippel returned to Lincoln from Australia on Easter and is with the team for the remainder of the season Softball Contact: Matt Smith msmith@huskers.com Office: (402) Cell: (402) Date Opponent/Tournament Time/Result Record Kajikawa Classic (Tempe, Ariz.) The Bluejays have won four straight games and seven of their last eight, including a doubleheader sweep of Big 12 foe Iowa State and a 2-1 road win at two-time defending national champion Arizona. Overall, Nebraska and Creighton share three common opponents to this point in the season. Against Arizona State, BYU and Northern Colorado, NU posted a 5-2 record, while CU went 3-2. Creighton and Nebraska match up well statistically, as the Huskers score 0.3 more runs per game, while the Bluejays allow 0.4 fewer runs per contest. NU boasts a higher average (.274-to-.249) and more speed (43-to-13 stolen bases), while Creighton has more than tripled Nebraska s home run production (16-to-5). Offensively, TJ Eadus is the only Bluejay hitting better than.300 as the senior catcher is batting.312 on the season and leads the team with six home runs and 16 RBIs. Creighton Record Average Home Runs Stolen Bases Runs Per Game Runs Allowed Per Game ERA Shutouts Strikeouts Per Game Opponent Average Fielding Percentage hitting at least.288, while Lincoln native Bailey Dawson leads the Jays with three triples and has also homered three times while tying Eadus for the team lead with 16 RBIs. In the circle, ace Tara Oltman has picked up where she left off following an all-region freshman campaign last season. Oltman is the only Creighton pitcher with a winning record, as she is 13-4 on the season with a 1.06 ERA. Oltman has thrown of the team s innings, striking out 122 and holding opposing hitters to a.193 average while tossing five of Creighton s six shutouts. Amanda Hess (4-4, 4.20 ERA in 48.1 innings) and Emily Humpal (2-2, 5.97 ERA in 34.0 innings) round out the Bluejay staff. A Look at the Series History Nebraska has dominated the all-time series with Creighton, although recent meetings have been much closer. The Huskers lead the all-time series, 73-33, but the Bluejays have won the season series in two of the past three seasons, including their only season sweep ever in Creighton won last year s series with a 2-1 come-frombehind victory over the Huskers in the NCAA Tournament at Bowlin Stadium. The win marked CU s first postseason victory over Nebraska since Creighton has won four of the last seven meetings overall, but NU s 73 victories over its in-state rival unofficially rank as the fourth-most victories over one team in NCAA history. Last season, Creighton won the regular-season matchup in Lincoln, while the Huskers were victorious in Omaha. In the first game, Creighton scored four runs off NU starter Molly Hill in the first two innings, before Hill was perfect over the final 5.1 innings. Nebraska managed just two hits and one unearned run off CU ace Tara Oltman. Lincoln native Bailey Dawson did most of the damage for Creighton, finishing with three RBIs. Nebraska rebounded with a 7-2 win in Omaha behind the strength of graduated seniors Devin Porter, Jamie Waldecker and Ashley DeBuhr. Porter finished with two RBIs, while Waldecker went 2-for-4 with a home run and a season-high five RBIs. In the circle, DeBuhr outdueled Oltman in a battle of Beatrice, Neb., pitchers. DeBuhr allowed two runs but struck out 11 in a complete-game effort, while Oltman was tagged for a then-career-high seven runs on eight hits. The final meeting last year ended in dramatic fashion, as Creighton scored a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to eliminate Nebraska from the NCAA Tournament. Haley Long gave Nebraska a 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI single and the score remained the same until the bottom of the seventh, when one Creighton hit, an error, a hit batter and two passed balls allowed the tying and winning runs to score Nebraska Cornhuskers Numerical Roster No. Name Pos. 3 Quick Hitters The information below provides a quick glimpse of a few statistics and brief notes of interest to keep in mind as Nebraska travels to Omaha on Wednesday to face Creighton in the first of two meetings this season: The Huskers have scored in the first inning in 10 of their 13 victories this season. Scoring in the first inning has proven to be precursor to success for Nebraska, as they are 10-1 this season when doing so and over the last five years. In an all-too-telling statistic, Nebraska is 13-0 when out-hitting its opponent this season, but is 0-12 when being out-hit or when the hits are even. The Huskers have been successful on 43-of-47 stolen base attempts (91 percent) through the first 25 games of this season. Nebraska has stolen 17 straight bases and 31 of its last 33 overall. NU has nearly matched last year s stolen bases total, when NU swiped 51 bases in 71 tries (72 percent). Nebraska has proven to be a clutch hitting team so far this season, as 39 of Nebraska s 86 RBIs have come with two outs (45 percent). Nebraska played its first - and only - one-run game of the season in a 2-1 loss to BYU on March 15. The Huskers had not played a one-run game through the first 17 games of the season, the longest season-opening streak without a one-run contest in school history. Each of the Huskers first three games last season were decided by a single run and through the first 25 games last season, NU had played in 13 one-run contests. Not only has NU played just a single one-run game this year, the Huskers have played 16 games decided by four runs or more. Last season, a total of 11 of Nebraska s 57 games were decided by four or more runs. Nebraska is since 2000 when leading after six innings of play. The Huskers had won 106 consecutive games when taking a lead into the seventh inning before losing a 9-6 lead at No. 4 Oklahoma last April. After playing its 600th all-time game in the month of March last Saturday against Texas, Nebraska now boasts an all-time record of (.627) in the month, including a 10-6 mark this year, with all six losses coming to teams that have been ranked or received votes in the poll at some point this season. After opening its home schedule in dominating fashion with a four-game sweep of Northern Colorado, Nebraska has now won 43 of its last 47 regular-season home games dating back to Nebraska hitters went the entire game without striking out in game two of a March 9 doubleheader with Northern Colorado. That marked the first time since April 12, 2006 against South Dakota State that NU had not been struck out in a game, a streak totaling 92 games. The Huskers repeated the feat in the first game of a doubleheader with Southern Utah on March 17. The 2006 squad also had two games where it did not strike out a single time, although one of the games was against Division II foe Missouri Western. Both Haley Long and Darcy Rutherford have already produced enough RBIs this season to equal their career totals entering the year. Long has driven in 13 after also tallying 13 RBIs in her first season in Rutherford, meanwhile, has driven in three this season after totaling three RBIs in her first two seasons combined. Weekly Notes #7 March 25 Page 3 Guile Finding Her Groove The Nebraska coaching staff has high expectations offensively for freshman Ashley Guile, a two-time, first-team NFCA High School All-American. Those expectations are highlighted by the fact that Guile has hit third, fourth or fifth in the lineup every game this season and after a relatively slow start, Guile has emerged of late. Guile has hit safely in a career-best five straight games, while producing four multi-hit efforts in her last seven games after not producing a multi-hit contest through her first 18 career games. After going just 1-for-9 in a four-game series with Northern Colorado, Guile s average was down to a season-low.214. Since then, Guile has hit.458 (11-for-24) to bring her average up to.299. Guile has also produced five RBIs during her recent hot streak, including a career-high three against Southern Utah on March 17. Overall, Guile currently ranks fourth on the team in average, while leading the team with 15 walks and ranking second with a.448 on-base percentage. Mullin s emergence in the No. 2 spot has sparked NU to a 12-6 record, as she has picked up her play the past two weeks despite a hitless two games at Texas in the Huskers opening Big 12 series last weekend. Mullin had 12 hits in the first seven games of Nebraska s recently completed nine-game road trip dating back to March 14. Prior to the road trip, Mullin had recorded only 10 hits through her first 16 games. Mullin has also been able to use her bunting abilities to record more sacrifices, as she has totaled four in the last nine games. Mullin leads the team with seven sacrifices this season, after leading the Big 12 with 18 last season. Below is a breakdown of how Mullin has fared the last two weeks: Category Avg. Darcy Rutherford, LF (25 starts,.395, 0 HR, 3 RBIs) Rutherford was arguably NU s most improved player in 2007 and has continued to take her game to new heights this season. Rutherford leads the team with a.395 average and has hit leadoff the past 18 games. She has also delivered clutch hits, producing three RBIs after entering the season with only three in her career. 2. Meghan Mullin, CF (25 starts,.297, 0 HR, 1 RBI) A speedy slapper with excellent bat control, Mullin led Nebraska in average in 2007, hitting.318 while starting every game. She also led the Huskers with 12 stolen bases and recorded a Big 12-best 18 sacrifices. Mullin was off to a slow start this year before going 12-for-24 in Las Vegas, as her average is up to Amanda Duran, C (22 starts,.313, 0 HR, 18 RBIs) Duran has been impressive thus far following a stellar career at Pima CC. A two-time, first-team All-American and two-time National Catcher of the Year at Pima, Duran is hitting.313 this season. She leads the team with eight doubles and 18 RBIs, while her.433 slugging percentage ranks second. 4. Crystal Carwile, 1B (25 starts,.244, 4 HR, 18 RBIs) A two-time All-Big 12 selection through her first two seasons, Carwile is far and away the Huskers most experienced hitter. She led NU in home runs and RBIs as both a freshman and sophomore and boasts more career home runs (19) than the rest of the Nebraska roster combined, including four of Nebraska s five home runs this season. 5. Ashley Guile, DP (25 starts,.299, 0 HR, 12 RBIs) One of several promising newcomers on the 2008 team, Guile has added a big presence to the NU lineup. A twotime, first-team high school All-American, Guile hit better than.500 her final two years of high school. She has gotten hot of late and is now hitting.299 with 12 RBIs and a team-high 15 walks. 6. Julie Brechtel, 2B (23 starts,.233, 0 HR, 10 RBIs) Another new face on the infield, Brechtel is arguably Nebraska s most complete infielder aside from Crystal Carwile. A natural, smooth fielder, Brechtel is an experienced infielder, as she competed year-round in her hometown of Fullerton, Calif. She has started to emerge offensively, hitting.233 with 10 RBIs and a.387 on-base percentage. 7. Haley Long, RF (25 starts,.323, 1 HR, 13 RBIs) Long earned second-team all-conference honors as a first-year transfer in 2007, when she recorded the Huskers highest batting average during Big 12 play. One of NU s top clutch hitters last season, Long has worked hard to add more power to her game and hit her first career home run at any level against No. 6 Northwestern on Feb Heidi Foland, 3B (24 starts,.229, 0 HR, 6 RBIs) One of the Huskers best athletes, Foland has made an immediate impact on the infield, starting all but one game. Foland, who also drew recruiting interest in basketball, is just beginning to tap her softball potential, but has been solid thus far, hitting.229 with six RBIs, including a career-high five against Northern Colorado on March Whitney Barrett, SS (19 starts,.161, 0 HR, 3 RBIs) Barrett was NU s regular starter at second base as a freshman in 2007 despite battling through several injuries. After undergoing offseason surgery, Barrett was limited to just one game the first two weeks, but returned for the Huskers third tournament. Nearing full health, Barrett has four hits in her last 15 at bats. Molly Hill, RHP (10 starts, 6-4, 1.72 ERA, 53 Ks, 61.0 IP) One of 50 players named to the USA Softball National Player of the Year watch list, Hill has pitched well while recovering from knee surgery in late January, outside of two poor starts. Hill, the reigning Big 12 ERA champion, has a 37-2 career record when she receives more than one run of support. Abby Hughes, INF (6 starts,.143, 0 HR, 0 RBIs) A smart and speedy player, Hughes earned three starts in her first weekend. Defensively, her quickness and range are a huge asset at third, as she is arguably NU s best defensive option at the demanding position. Alex Hupp, RHP (10 starts,.136, 0 HR, 2 RBIs; 6-5, 2.56 ERA, 82 Ks, 76.2 IP) After a rough opening weekend, Hupp has bounced back nicely, going 6-2 in her last eight decisions. She has tossed three shutouts in her last five starts, including her first career no-hitter against Northern Colorado. Sammi Liegl, OF (0 starts,.000, 0 HR, 0 RBIs) A Lincoln native, Liegl expects to see plenty of action this season, primarily in pinch-running situations due to a talented and veteran outfield. She has appeared in 13 games and has scored seven runs. Kelli Linke, DP (3 starts,.250, 0 HR, 1 RBI) Linke has earned three starts as the designated player while pinch-hitting in 15 other contests. A first-team high school All-American her senior year at Lincoln Northeast, Linke is 6-for-24 at the plate with a double and an RBI. Brittany Pascale, DP (3 starts,.071, 0 HR, 0 RBIs) Pascale is still recovering from offseason shoulder surgery and hopes to move closer to full strength as the season progresses. Pascale has earned three starts and is reaching base at a.278 clip after coaxing four walks. Tori Tyson, RHP (0 starts,.000, 0 HR, 0 RBIs; 1-3, 7.22 ERA, 5 Ks, 21.1 IP) Tyson was expected to see her share of innings this season, but she was thrust into a prominent role with an injury to Molly Hill. Tyson has started five games - including two against top-10 foes - posting a 1-3 record. Crystal Gonzalez, OF (23 starts,.214, 0 HR, 0 RBIs in 2007) Gonzalez, who missed the final two months of her freshman season after tearing her ACL, re-injured the knee during the Huskers semester break. The injury required a second surgery that will keep her out for the entire year.

5 s Weekly Notes #7 March 25 Page 5 What a Difference a Year Makes Despite a young offense that is without the presence of two All-Big 12 hitters, more balance throughout the lineup has helped Nebraska post much betters offensive numbers through the first weekend of Big 12 Conference play compared to the same stretch last season. Overall, the Huskers are hitting.035 points better while scoring 34 more runs, despite hitting fewer home runs. In the most important category, this year s team is averaging 1.5 more runs per game. Below is a comparison of the 2007 and 2008 offense s through the season s first 23 games: Category Games Avg. AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SO BB HBP SB SLG% OB% Huskers Already Topping 2007 Offensive Bests A young, but much improved Nebraska offense has already surpassed season highs set from the 2007 campaign. The most glaring improvement has been in hits and runs scored. Nebraska has scored at least 10 runs twice through the first 25 games of the season, after never scoring more than nine runs in a game last season. The Huskers have also produced at least 10 hits in a game eight times, surpassing the 57-game total of six from last year. Below is a look at how quickly NU matched the 2007 season high or total in several offensive categories: Category 2008 High 2007 High Number of Games to Match 2007 High Runs 11 9 (twice) 8 Hits Home Runs Walks RBIs Double-Digit Run Games Doubles 4 (twice) 3 15 Double-Digit Hit Games Hit Me Although no official record is kept for most hit batters in a game, Nebraska surely came close to setting a school record on March 8, as the Huskers were plunked five times in game two of a doubleheader with Northern Colorado. Junior Crystal Carwile was hit twice, as Nebraska was drilled by a total of nine pitches in the first three games of the series. Against BYU six days later, junior Darcy Rutherford was plunked two times as Nebraska was hit by four pitches. Overall, Nebraska has been hit by 27 pitches through the first 25 games of the season. The 27 hit batters already rank fifth in school history. The Huskers have established a new school record in each of the past two seasons and NU is easily on pace to top last year s record total of 39 hit-by-pitches. Revelle Records 600th Career Win & 600 Wins at Nebraska Head Coach Rhonda Revelle earned her 600th career victory when the Huskers run-ruled Tennessee Tech, 11-1, in five innings on Feb. 29, and recorded her 600th win at Nebraska on March 15 when Nebraska defeated Utah Valley State, 5-3. Revelle, who boasts a career record of , including a mark at Nebraska, became the 33rd active Division I coach - and 48th all-time - to reach the milestone. The winningest female coach of any sport in Husker history, Revelle ranks third all-time among all coaches in NU history with her 603 wins at Nebraska. Shutout Streak Snapped Just Shy of School Record A late two-out, two-run home run in a 2-1 loss to BYU on March 15 snapped the Nebraska pitching staff s streak of five consecutive shutouts. Husker hurlers had thrown 37.0 consecutive scoreless innings before the homer, including streaks of 21.0 for sophomore Alex Hupp and 19.0 for junior Molly Hill. The five consecutive shutouts were the most by Nebraska since All-American Peaches James tossed seven consecutive shutouts in James streak marked the longest consecutive shutout streak against Division I opponents in the history of Nebraska softball. The Huskers streak of five shutouts marked their first five shutouts of the season. NU had gone the first 12 games of the season without tossing a shutout, while going a total of 23 consecutive games without a shutout dating back to last season. The season-opening streak of 12 games without a shutout was Nebraska s longest drought since 1993, while the 23 consecutive games without a shutout marked the Huskers longest streak without a shutout since Big 12 Conference Standings (through March 23) Rk. That list also includes fellow junior Haley Long, who earned all-conference honors last year in her first season following one year at Blinn (Texas) College. Long finished with 13 RBIs last season, while Duran currently has 18 RBIs just 25 games into the season. Duran s 18 RBIs are believed to already rank as the third-highest total by a first-year transfer in Nebraska history. Duran is currently on pace to finish with around 40 RBIs this season, a total which would surpass Christie McCoy s believed first-year transfer record of 37 set in Brechtel s Streak Freshman Julie Brechtel got off to a slow start offensively, but found her groove during an incredible stretch in early March. Brechtel began her career just 3-for-27, but in a testament to her terrific approach, she still tallied five RBIs while coaxing six walks. Her hitting luck began to change on the final day of the NFCA Leadoff Classic, where she began an incredible run of recording seven hits in seven straight at bats while reaching base safely in 10 consecutive plate appearances. Brechtel s streak had a chance to stretch even further as her streak ended on a diving snag of a hard-hit grounder at third before she lined out directly to the left fielder in her next at bat. Before the streak began, Brechtel s average was just.111 but by the end of her seven straight hits, her average had risen to.294. Carwile Crossing the Plate Junior Crystal Carwile has scored 12 runs in her last 13 games, including tying her career high by scoring three times in both games of March 8 doubleheader with Northern Colorado. Carwile, a middle-of-the-order hitter known more for her power than her speed, leads the team with 20 runs through the first 25 games of the season. No other Husker has scored more than 16, while four of her runs have come courtesy of her bat, as she has belted four of Nebraska s five home runs. Carwile has scored 87 runs in her career and is on pace to challenge for a spot in the record books before her career is over, as margie Ogrodowicz ranks 10th in NU history with 120 runs scored. Hupp Tosses First Career No-Hitter Alex Hupp tossed her first career no-hitter in game two of Nebraska s doubleheader sweep of Northern Colorado on March 8. Hupp was nearly perfect in the circle, tossing a six-inning no-hitter and facing just one batter over the minimum. Hupp was perfect through 4.1 innings until walking Katelyn Landorf in the top of the fifth. The only other Bear to reach base was Jessie Schopeflin, who reached on an error but was promptly caught stealing with two outs in the top of the sixth. Hupp s no-hitter was the 34th no-hitter in Nebraska softball history, as she became the 16th pitcher to toss a no-hitter for the Huskers. Young Offense Ends Tournament Play on Hot Streak Nebraska s young offense showed its greatest promise over the final three weeks of the Huskers tournament season, after struggling through the first two tournaments. Competing against a tough NFCA Classic field the first weekend of March that included three ranked teams among the Huskers five opponents, Nebraska hit.318 for the weekend while scoring 25 runs. NU then hit.337 in sweeping a four-game series from Northern Colorado March 8 and 9, scoring 28 runs in only 21 innings. In its final tournament of the year, NU batted.306 and scored 31 runs in seven total games in Las Vegas. At the end of tournament play, the Huskers had increased their team batting average from.216 after the first two weekends to.287 after the trip to the desert. Nebraska also averaged more than five runs per game over its final 16 tournament games, totaling 84 runs after scoring just 18 runs through the first seven contests for an average of 2.6 runs per game. Helping the cause has been a healtheir unit, as Nebraska had its full lineup available for the first time against Northern Colorado in the Huskers fourth tournament of the season. Below is a comparison of Nebraska s offensive production from the first two weekends of tournament play compared to the final three weekends, including a breakdown of how NU s eight newcomers improved: Entire Team Category Avg. Games AB R H 2B HR RBI SO BB SB SLG% OB% First Two Weeks Last Three Weeks Newcomers Only Category Avg. Games AB R H 2B HR RBI SO BB SB SLG% OB% First Two Weeks Last Three Weeks Freshmen Showing Great Plate Discipline Nebraska s freshman class has been anything but anxious this season, showing great discipline at the plate. Ashley Guile leads the team with 15 walks, while Julie Brechtel is second with 10. Overall, the four freshmen to have coaxed a walk this season have combined to draw 32 of Nebraska s 67 total walks (48 percent).

7 Weekly Notes #7 s March 25 Page 7 Rutherford Off to Superb Start NU vs. Other Conferences (2008) vs. ACC Junior Darcy Rutherford has shown great improvement from the first day she set foot on campus. After seeing vs. Big 12 (all games) action primarily as a pinch runner as a freshman, Rutherford earned 26 starts last season while hitting.254 with vs. BIG EAST a pair of doubles and three RBIs. vs. Big Ten Rutherford has continued to improve her game and the results are again showing through the first 25 games vs. Conference USA of the 2008 season. Rutherford is hitting a team-best.395 this season, while her 30 hits are eight more than NU s vs. Independents next-highest individual total. Rutherford also leads the team with a.465 on-base percentage and a current sevengame vs. Mountain West hitting streak, while she has hit in the leadoff role for the past 18 games A native of Omaha, Rutherford has also produced three RBIs this season after recording a total of just three through her first two seasons. vs. Ohio Valley vs. Pac vs. SEC vs. Summit League vs. Sun Belt Scoring Explosion The third weekend seems to have been the charm for the Huskers, as Nebraska s offense has come alive since opening its third weekend of play with an 11-run outburst in only five innings against Tennessee Tech. The 11 runs and 13 hits were not only season highs, but they easily topped Nebraska s best efforts from The 11 runs jump-started the offense, as Nebraska has scored at least eight runs six times. NU has also scored at least six runs eight times this season. Last season the Huskers scored at least six runs just eight times while scoring at least eight runs only twice. Carwile Surpasses 2007 Home Run Total Junior Crystal Carwile hit four home runs through the season s first 16 games, surpassing her entire 57-game total from Carwile has led Nebraska in home runs every season, finishing with 12 as a freshman and three as a sophomore. Carwile s power numbers dipped last season partially as a result of a continued recovery from offseason shoulder surgery. Last year, Carwile did not hit her first home run until the 22nd game of the year. Long Earns Spot on NFCA Leadoff Classic All-Tournament Team Junior Haley Long was one of 12 players named to the NFCA Leadoff Classic All-Tournament team for her performance at the event Feb. 29 to March 2. Long started all five games and hit.385 (5-for-13) with four RBIs and a stolen base. In the tournament which featured seven ranked teams, Long was one of only three players on the all-tournament team who was not a member of a ranked squad. Freshmen First The 2008 freshman class is already making a name for itself, as the seven-player class is the largest group of freshmen ever assembled under Head Coach Rhonda Revelle. Not only are they strong in numbers, the freshmen also have had a strong presence in the lineup right from the season s first pitch. Nebraska s lineup has featured at least three freshmen starters in every game this season. Ashley Guile has started all 25 games, while Heidi Foland (24 starts) and Julie Brechtel (23) have nearly been everyday starters. Abby Hughes is next with six starts, while Tori Tyson has made five starts in the circle and Kelli Linke has made three starts. Twice already this season, Nebraska has penciled six freshmen into the starting lineup. Three freshmen (Guile, Brechtel and Foland) were in the opening-day lineup this season, one year after all three members of NU s 2007 freshman class earned a start in the season-opener against No. 24 Auburn. Prior to last season, Nebraska had not started more than two freshmen in a season opener since Carwile Records 100th Career Hit Junior Crystal Carwile singled in her first at bat against Idaho State on Feb. 15 to mark the 100th hit of her career. The only active Husker with 100 career hits, Carwile currently has 118 career hits. She is bidding to become only the eighth player in school history to record 200 career hits and the first since All-American Anne Steffan, who finished with 217 hits from 2002 to Long Goes Long Junior Haley Long hit her first career home run in an 8-6 loss to then-no. 6 Northwestern on Feb. 17. Long s homer, an opposite field shot, broke a 4-4 tie and gave Nebraska a temporary 6-4 lead before the Wildcats rallied with four runs in their half of the inning. Not only was it Long s first career home run at Nebraska, it was the first home run she has ever hit at any level. The homer came in her 158th career at bat at Nebraska. Carwile Provides Powerful Punch to Lineup One of the biggest questions the Huskers sought to answer in non-conference play was which players will emerge as run-producers for a talented, yet inexperienced lineup. Several newcomers have stepped up and delivered key hits as three of the Huskers top five RBI producers are in their first season. As the newcomers continue to adjust to the Division I level, NU does have the added comfort of having at least one proven veteran batting in the middle of the order. That veteran is junior Crystal Carwile, who has earned a pair of All-Big 12 accolades through her first two seasons. As the chart below illustrates, Carwile is far and away the Huskers most prolific returning power hitter. In fact, Carwile hit more home runs in her first seven career games (five) than Nebraska s other hitters have slugged in a combined 605 career games. Category Carwile s Career Total Next Highest Career Total Rest of Team Combined Doubles 27 8 (Long & Duran) 42 Home Runs 19 2 (Hupp & Pascale) 5 RBIs (Long) 131 Run-Rule String Snapped When Nebraska suffered a 9-1 five-inning loss at then-no. 5 and currently top-ranked Arizona State on the second day of the season, it marked the first time since the opening game of the 2004 season that Nebraska had been handed a run-rule defeat. The Huskers went 235 games before being run-ruled, easily the longest streak in the Big 12 Conference and the third-longest streak among all BCS programs. Winning Debuts Freshman right-hander Tori Tyson earned a victory in her first career start against Idaho State on Feb. 15. With the win, Tyson became the fourth straight Husker pitcher to be victorious in her first career decision, joining teammates Molly Hill and Alex Hupp, along with former Husker Jordan Keen. Overall, six of Nebraska s last seven pitchers won their first career decision (and start), with the lone exception being three-time All-Big 12 hurler Ashley DeBuhr, who surrendered four late runs in a 6-4 loss to Notre Dame in Prior to DeBuhr, the last Husker to lose her first career decision (and start) was Penny Cope in 2000, although Cope was a junior college transfer. The last freshman to lose her first career decision prior to DeBuhr was Lori Tschannen in Gonzalez Out With Injury Again After missing the final 22 games of the 2007 season due to a knee injury, sophomore Crystal Gonzalez was hit by the injury bug again this winter when she re-injured the same knee at home in California over the holiday break. Gonzalez is expected to miss the entire 2008 campaign and has a redshirt season available. Hill Named to National Player of the Year Watch List Junior right-hander Molly Hill earned a prestigious preseason honor on Jan. 30, when she was one of 50 players nationally selected to the watch list for the 2008 USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year Award. Hill was one of nine Big 12 players and one of six league pitchers named to the preseason watch list, which also consisted of players from 14 different conferences. Slow Start a Good Sign? Nebraska finished with just a 1-4 record in its first weekend, marking the first time since 2004 that the Huskers finished their first weekend of competition with a losing record. Since the Big 12 Conference was formed in 1996, NU has finished with a.500 or worse record in its first weekend five times, including this season. Each of the four previous seasons, Nebraska rebounded from the slow start and went on to a successful season. In 2004, the Huskers opened 2-3 before sweeping the Big 12 regular-season and tournament titles while falling just short of the Women s College World Series. In 2001, Nebraska began 2-2 before posting a record and winning the regular-season Big 12 championship. The Last Time a Husker... Recorded six or more at bats...
